We were aiming for an outdoor…read moreFall wedding, and the property for Red Barn was absolutely beautiful from the accommodations, the scenery of the surrounding forest, to the water, the gardens, and of course, the barn itself. We reached out and scheduled a visit with the coordinator. The day of the visit we arrived, the coordinator had forgotten, but said we could walk around the site. It was no big deal, the day was kind of gray, but we could get a sense of what the property was, so we decided to go forward. We did have another meeting, and signed the contract for September 13th. A couple months later, Covid hit, and we were in limbo about the wedding and evolving government regulations. However, we kept informed of the changes and adapted as needed, they were flexible and we were comfortable moving forward together. So far, pretty good experience, you might be wondering why the low rating, but the turn happened a month leading up to the date. All of our vendors were booked and deposits all made. We had paid Red Barn ~$4500. The first issue was that the in-house catering was no longer available, but we weren't made aware of the fact. We frantically searched for another catering, and were fortunate enough to find Cheryl's on 12th. So, again, no big deal really, just momentary panic. Mon Sept 7th, however, issues started escalating. The huge Riverside fire was choking half the state, and with an outside venue, we were getting extremely concerned that this was becoming an impossibility. Thur Sept 10th, the venue was in level 3 evacuation, our house was in level 2. Family was in the process of arriving from out of state, or traveling from around Oregon. We reach out and they say that maybe we can reschedule, or just see how things turn out. Our vendors started calling. The catering would not travel to Oregon City, nor would the bartender, the florist, the baker, or the DJ. None of the vendors were willing to put their employees' health at risk to fulfill the business, and neither were we. So we changed venues to SE Portland. One indoors with heavy ventilation. We made it work, our vendors could still do business in a nice area, and our guests didn't spend a lot of money and time making it out to our wedding for nothing. We had heard nothing from Red Barn after the text mentioned above. Here's where things soured greatly: My husband reached out to Red Barn a few days after the wedding asking for a refund, and offered to pay ~$540 for their time of the meetings. There was a lot of back and forth. After months of negotiation, they said they would give back 50%, but with small payments over a period of time. That negotiation fell through, and Red Barn said they would only give back the deposit ($500). My husband is a realtor and at the time had a client in Tillamook. He spent over 40 hours working with the client, found them a house, got it under contract, and in the end, the clients backed out. He was entitled to his commission (around $5500), but he didn't want to put his clients in a bad position, understood that it is part of business, and moved on. He relayed this to Red Barn, and they stated they were much like realtors in that they do all this work in preparation for a wedding, so they are entitled to the money. Their communication was often condescending, talking about how lenient they were being with us, how generous they had been with their offers in the negotiation (i.e. "we don't generally offer this, but...") What they were particularly insistent upon, was that the wedding could've been held at their venue. That there was no reason for us to even cancel in the first place (but, as they stated numerous times, "it was your right to make a different decision"), despite the repeated response that literally no vendors were going to be there. We weren't going to put our guests, our vendors, or their employees in that situation. The air quality was at the most hazardous level, and still in evacuation. Over a year later, they responded with, "we even purchased a powerful air filter, the air in the barn was better than our own house." Knowledge we were never offered at any point. However, this is a barn. With wedding traffic, of guests, vendors, employees, no insulation, slim walls, it would be impossible. Our vendors would not be in attendance, and everyone would be subjected to some of the highest levels of air pollutants with its proximity to the fires. In difficult times, we are presented with people's true character. The venue is lovely, the coordinator was nice enough, and we never actually met the owners. The odds of another pandemic and wildfires happening to sabotage your wedding day are indeed nearly zero, but going through it ourselves, we discovered that the owners of Red Barn have one priority above all else, where our vendors' owners did not: Profit over people. And apathy for an incredibly challenging situation.

These were huge must-haves for us and were ultimately the reasons why we decided to choose Baker. The space is a blank canvas with character and charm, making it easy to bring our wedding vision to life. One thing to note, the venue is NOT wheelchair accessible. It is on the second floor and is only accessible via a staircase with narrow steps. Jen and Mark (owners) were incredibly kind and accommodating, making the process easy and smooth. We would absolutely recommend Baker Building to anyone in need of a venue space.

On the day of, she was there to manage deliveries, the timeline, and make sure it all went on without a hitch. Without her, I have no idea how we would have made this day possible! On the day of, we felt completely relaxed and pampered! Our Catering Captain, Kirk, was there at every turn, making sure we were satisfied and had everything we needed. We got married here September 8, 2018, and I am so glad that we chose this venue. Originally, I had…read moremy eye on a few other venues that were more expensive and didn't have any amenities included. We chose this venue due to the beautiful backyard, indoor option for food prep, bathrooms, and a rain plan B, and the included perks (DIY flexibility, tables, chairs, dishes, glasses, AND they wash the dishes for you after the event!) I wanted a low-stress, low-cost, beautiful and intimate wedding, and we had that. Our wedding had 60 people, and we held the ceremony and reception in the backyard. I rented chairs and a pallet bar because they chairs that they have, while free, look a bit like cafeteria chairs. The chair rental was my one splurge. The venue needed minimal decorations to make the space beautiful- the landscaping and arbor make for a beautiful backdrop. We used vendors/friends with businesses for: flowers, video, photo, chairs, ceremony musicians, and sound equipment. We went the DIY route for decorations, food (a friend coordinated cheese/meat trays), drinks (had a friend who has an OLCC license), and everything else. We were nervous about the trains down below, and while we heard them a few times, it was not a big deal at all. There is plenty of street parking and we walked over to the park for bridal party photos, which was nice. The couple who manage the venue are kind, quick to respond, and volunteers, so not available at all times of the day, like at other venues. That wasn't a problem for us. We emailed when we had questions, drove by when we needed a refresher, and visited during open house hours on Thursday evenings when we needed to visualize things. The venue rental is for 6 hours, with a fee for each additional hour, but that is my only complaint. I think if it's booked for the day, it would be nice to not have to worry about timing as much. A 7-8 hour rental feels reasonable to me, and would avoid stress of spending more money to ensure enough time to set/clean up. We were able to have a beautiful wedding that we could afford. I think their materials and website could be updated to reflect how great of a venue it is, but then it would probably get more competitive, and I was grateful to not have to worry about that.

So just know that you may have to look a little bit harder to find a spot when it's busier. It's nice though since parking is free in this area. The overall staff this venue were really nice and helpful. There is food and drinks available and prices are typical of theaters. The theater itself is quite large inside. The seats are roomy with legroom available.

I was assaulted during a show at the Alberta Rose, and the staff did nothing to insure my safety…read moreand let my assaulter continue to watch the show in peace and even kept her from speaking with the police, who wanted to question her. This was a show that I'd been looking forward to for 4.5 months, since I'd bought the tickets then, and spent over $100 on them. The assaulter/woman, was seated at least two feet behind me said clearly "this woman's hair is all over in my space". Then I heard a rip and sharp pain, and my hair had been torn out. A big huge part of it, to where I was bleeding and bald in a patch. I told her she ripped out my hair, and she said "your hair was in my space; it was an accident". My husband heard this too. The staff at Alberta Rose knowing I was bleeding and hurt, gave me an ice pack and moved my husband and I outside the theater area to stools in the bar, which is outside the theater area. That's all they were willing to do. The woman who assaulted me was free to watch the show in peace. I called the police, but the staff of Alberta Rose kept reinforcing to them that the woman who assaulted me and her friends had a different story. The friends and my assaulter said my hair got caught in my seat; there was no assault. Hearing this, as well as there are no cameras in the theater, the police didn't even bother to speak with the women, or her friends. If the Alberta Rose Theater staff had brought out the assaulter, as the police had initially asked, before the staff was so dismissive, everyone would've clearly seen that the area of my hair that was pulled out, is a layered area, and it's only about a foot-long. It is impossible for it to have gotten caught in my seat. I was too upset to realize and point this out at the time. The police did get a picture of my bloody head, and were taking this situation and assault seriously prior to the staff being so dismissive. Besides the shock and pain, another reason I was so upset is that the woman who attacked me was still in the theater, behind my family, who I was no longer able to sit or be with. Even worse the staff wouldn't even let me back in to see my family after the show was done. I didn't even see the show, and the artist I hold so dearly in my heart, at all after the assault. She's literally of my favorite artists. This was my fourth show at The Alberta Rose, in so many months. I'm still in a lot of pain nearly 2 hours later. And my assaulter was just allowed to walk away. Alberta rose has been one of my favorite places in Portland. Now I'm sitting in my driveway at home in tears over what happened to me, without their keeping me safe, or defending me in any kind of way.
