After a day on the mountain, this was a nice little spot to get some nourishment. Someone wrote it looks cheap on the outside, but I must disagree. The sign is what actually caught our attention and the fact that it is "modern Mexican" makes it even better. The food is good and we were quickly met with the typical chips, salsa and white sauce. We ordered the elote dip, which was filling. Then we shared some tacos, which was plenty of food for a couple of people that just got done spending the early afternoon snowboarding. We found this place while shopping for a UTV vehicle. I liked that it said modern Mexican. The decor is beautiful ! Super super good! This place has the BEST drinks (I'm serious - their margaritas are very yummy), and a large menu with LOTS of variety. The food menu is about 10 pages long, ranging from burritos and enchiladas to seafoods, steak, and even pasta. The drink menu was about 8 pages full of wonderful options. The inside area is very clean and beautiful, with very vibrant colors and paintings and a wall to take photos in front of as well. I have eaten here quite a few times in the last 6 months, Hburg area is a good half way meeting point for family. It's a child/ family friendly business, I mention this with its close proximity to the college campus! I can't say this for other "local favorite places", because of rather loud inappropriate language and conversations, at nearby tables, where you can't hear your tables conversation, way prior to "evening crowds". Tequila Modern Taco is so much more than you would traditionally expect from a strip center restaurant! The menu is quite extensive, with lots of options available. The ingredients are always very fresh and flavorful, with each of our group preferring a different taste entree than the person beside them. Ranging from basic kids meal, to spicy with heat! The space is always clean, service good, excellent customer service and accommodating. With a most recent visit being for my granddaughter birthday, she felt so special with her fruity pebbles ice cream dessert, and the special birthday candle! Gorgeous establishment - clean, bright, tasteful modern decor, and spacious! When I arrived I was quickly treated and seated. It was during the work week - around 11:30am and wasn't extremely busy. I ordered a Tequila Bowl which by the pictures and ingredients specified in the menu looked pretty good. Unfortunately, it turned out to be mostly lettuce. When I asked if it was possible to add a little bit of more , maybe rice or beans , the answer was no because it was in the section of salads , which meant that it was suppose to be a bed of lettuce with some toppings. Wow. I have been waiting for this culinary experience for a long time. The food was exceptional!! House made mole sauce, which is something of a Heffalump to find. The carnitas are roasty, flavorful, moist. The cocktails are creative- if you like tequila, they have a very nice menu. I asked for my drink, a Paloma, to be replaced with Patron anejo, and it's delicious. I agree with other reviewers that this is not a typical Americanized Mexican restaurant. House made sauces, hot sauces, and the like. The house calls it "Modern Mexican ". They have taco flights, margarita flights, and other menu novelties that elevate the experience. At the end of of dinner we recieved the bill and much to my dismay there was a 4 to 5 percent charge for using your credit card! Tried Tequila for the first time with a group of friends. Entering, we were greeted by the very kind staff. The first thing we all noticed was the decor. The restaurant is full of bright colors, pictures and lights. When we try new places we typically order quite a few dishes to be sure we can really experience what the restaurant has to offer. The first item I ordered was the shrimp guacamole. I wish I would've gotten a picture but I was so excited with how amazing it looked, I couldn't wait to dig in. The guacamole was amazing, super fresh and the shrimp were nicely seasoned. For my entree, I ordered the Taco Flight. The options on the menu did not include shrimp but they were more than happy to make the accommodation. Each sauce that came with the tacos was delicious and added a nice touch in their own way. Nice decor and good service but the quality of ingredients was very poor. Left feeling horrible for hours after.

First off, don't confuse this place with the other Tequila Taco Bar in town. They are a different restaurant entirely. The food here is delicious! We had watermelon margaritas and vegetariano tequila bowl and combo with beef enchilada and chile relleno. The margaritas were very tasty. Chips and salsa and cheese dip were fantastic. Vegetarian bowl was good but extremely small and had too much lettuce and not enough beans. Combo was good, the enchilada was better than the chile relleno. But portions were really small, and the burrito was much smaller than I was expecting based on all of the burrito photos, it was about half of the size I expected and looked more like an enchilada. Maybe the food was just small because I got a combo instead of ordering one of the more specialty dishes. Or maybe the proportions here are just really small and the pictures are deceptive (in retrospect, looking at them, I can definitely see how they make things look bigger in the images). Hard to tell without coming here again and trying something else. I was full with what I ordered but my boyfriend (who got the bowl) was still hungry when we left. The downside is there really isn't a ton for him to order because he is vegetarian and most of the menu is meat. So he'd probably have to order the bowl and maybe a vegetarian combo in order to have enough food to be full, which is kind of a bummer. Especially considering this place is kind of pricey. We would definitely eat here again, but probably not very often just because of the price to portion ratio. We thought the prices made more sense when we were looking at the photos of what appeared to be huge plates, but seeing how small the portions actually were, it makes this place pretty expensive. Great food though! Best sit-down Mexican in town. Wonderful ambiance and good margaritas. So that's a huge plus. Not a regular staple, but a nice place to go out once in a while. It wasn't so much the wait but the unorganized mess that would appear to be seating/reception. As we stood in line to either be placed on a waiting list or given a table several people cut and the young host who tried to manage the crowd seemed frazzled and displaced. well we get to the front and he says we have to put our name on a waiting list. Frantically turning over several papers and receipts scattered on the desk he randomly traps a blank envelope over and sloppily jots down my name & number. No info, no wait time, no instructions just I'll text you. Well I ask. How many in front of us. He takes a deep uncomfortable breath and says well there's 2 parties a head of you. But there are no other names in the makeshift waiting list he so haphazardly jotted my contact information on several minutes earlier. oh ok I said. So myself and my party of 9 walk back outside. Sometime latter my husband calls from inside the restaurant to let us know the table is ready. We get inside and the server is clearing off the table. Next thing I know some rude guy says idk where y'all sitting but this is our table we have been waiting longer Thank you. Excuse me idk what's going on but the young lady here told us to sit at this table. The young host I mentioned earlier comes over and addresses the random gentleman and says yeah you're right and he was here first. Ok but why did she tell us to sit? He says IDK. We then ask for a manager. He comes from the back never greets us or says anything. The young server proceeded to speak in Spanish (mind you I'm fluent in Spanish but I never address this I just listen). 1. He only says these people (we happen to be all black people) are causing an issue 2. He said they want to speak to the manager but this guy has been waiting longer. 3. He shrugs his shoulder and waits for the manager. He shrugs as well. Rude guy repeats himself saying we've been waiting longer. I interject ok I understand that but what is the remedy for the young lady telling us to sit here. SILENCE!!!!!! No order, no professionalism they don't know anything but they are certain of one thing. He was here first and waiting longer. I asked again what is the remedy of one of your employees telling us to sit here? The young host responses with " she doesn't speak English" ... SERIOUSLY!!! What a copout. No apology until I repeated myself. I understand that but she's your employee, what is the remedy, consequence of her telling us to sit here. He apologizes and says there is nothing he can do. He accommodated the other party and literally just stares at us hoping we go away. We leave but we will not go away. Tequila Modern Mexican is anything but... beware and stick with a known town favorite like El Charo or Jaliscos because they have no idea what they are doing. Never again. read more

After having lived in California and Florida, I'd pretty much given up on trying to find a good Mexican restaurant in Virginia. I'm not sure what the heck the creamy salsa is but my husband and I don't like the chips and weak salsa in any of the Mexican restaurants we go to up here. In fact, my husband had completely sworn off Mexican restaurants in Virginia, but I begged him to let us try this one - and we were very pleased! We had heard this place was good, but we were very disappointed. We arrived around 3:40 and our meal arrived at our table one hour later, good thing I questioned where it was at. I ordered veggie fajitas and they were just ok and not much flavor. My husband ordered a California burrito and he didn't care for it. He came home and found the menu online and just as he suspected it came nothing as it was described as in menu. We did have a different server that was not assigned to our able who was very attentive I guess because they were not busy and noticed we had been sitting there forever with no meals. He wore black glasses but did not get his name. I regret not giving him my tip and yes I still tipped not know if it was the kitchens fault or not.
