Loved the art, and I thought at first that the woman working the gallery was kind, helpful, and passionate about the art. However, in the middle of a sale, she dropped the "news" to us about Charlie Kirk having been shot and made it a point, unprovoked and after I expressed concern, to make a classless statement that shocked us. I am sick with regret for going thru with the sale, but I vehemently feel that this experience should be made known. read more

Made a last minute decision to visit the Termesphere Gallery when I had a little bit of unexpected time to explore. So happy I did! The staff is kind and knowledgeable, the art is absolutely incredible and unlike any other, and the mapping and designing of the art is incredible to see! Highly recommend a stop! My husband and I were recently in the Spearfish area. Someone at the High Plains Heritage Center recommended we visit the Termesphere Gallery. Neither of us are interested in visiting art galleries, but we thought, why not, we're close by. We were pleasantly surprised the moment we opened the door! Although not large, the amount of art work and the quality was amazing. We were mesmerized by the work of Mr. Termes. We don't often buy art, but we walked out with a small print. Looking forward to framing and displaying his work in our house in Tucson. read more

If you're a fan of MC Escher, Trompe d'Oeil or cool art, it's worth the jaunt outside of Spearfish to visit the Termesphere Gallery. Home and studio of Dick Termes, the gallery is housed on the second floor of a round house (which the artist built himself) and is open Saturdays and Sundays. What is a Termesphere? (www.termespheres.com) Termespheres are a representation of the physical world, transferred onto a spherical medium. In order to keep the painting in perspective, a 6-point system is used. The painted spheres show a 360* view of the scene as it rotates. The spheres with an internal view give the "other side" view, which means one sees what would/should be on the back of a two-dimensional painting. If you look at them online, you'll see it. If you go to the gallery, you'll understand them. The gallery curator was able to give us an informative rundown of many of the pieces, the methods Mr. Termes uses, and the evolution of this art form. Extremely engaging and interesting, and we ended up enjoying the pieces even more for knowing the background and history of both the art form and the artist. Pieces are for sale, and commissioned pieces are displayed as well. (Nice to know: you can pay as you go on commissioned pieces.) Books about technique, other artists, etc. are for sale, along with paper and smaller works. While Mr. Termes was out of town when we visited, if he is in residence, he does like to talk to visitors. If I could give this more stars I would. Just so worth the short drive off the beaten path. If you are not familiar with Dick Termes work, make a point of doing so. I saw his sphere hanging in the saloon in Deadwood, and immediately became entranced by his work. He brings to life in a 3D way the 6 point perspective. Obvious influences from MC Escher and Daly. He's amazing. This geodome gallery is filled with spinning spheres of work and brings such inspiration. read more

The Black Hills of South Dakota... not just about motorcycles and Mt. Rushmore. Tucked away in a small canyon-like drive in Spearfish, SD lives one of South Dakota's own world renowned artists: Dick Termes. His gallery is in a dome as is his home... so right from the start the environment is enticing. How many of us have actually gotten to explore in a dome? The big bang, so to speak, is walking through the door into this gallery and immersing yourself in a world of spheres, at least 50 suspended from the ceiling, seated on rotating table stands or polyhedrons sitting on the floor ranging in size from 6" to 30" WOW! The artwork on the spheres is phenomenal but the concept BEHIND the artwork is what is truly intriguing. His 'sketchbook' is comprised of small ornament size spheres, where ideas are worked out... and can be purchased! Throughout the space are published articles about his work, his workshops, his philosophy, his WHIMSY. He has books that feature his art, videos show his artwork with comments by himself, and pieces that can be cut out and assembled into all kinds of polyhedrons. The atmosphere at the gallery is so relaxed and friendly, and one never knows when Dick might just happen to be in the gallery, having emerged from his studio (another dome located on the property). He takes the time to visit and explain his work. Also on board is a BONUS: His wife Markie has a puppet theater named DRAGONS ARE TOO SELDOM, which she travels the countryside producing puppet shows for children of all ages. some of her work can be seen and purchased at the gallery also. I visited this place on a whim, since I was not expecting to be in Spearfish and wanted to see some cool local stuff. I found them by picking up a pamphlet in my hotel. When I got there, by way of a short but lovely drive through the countryside, I immediately saw the geo-dome that the gallery lives in. I went in and was greeted by the lovely gallery director Lynn, who told me all about the history of the artwork, and the artist, Dick Termes, who works in 6-point perspective. The spheres were amazing... I could gaze at them for hours. His style is a bit like Escher, a bit psychedelic, and very colorful... my eyes were being filled with aesthetic joy! I really enjoyed my visit, and Lynn was a delight to talk to. I recommend checking this place out! read more
