What a gem this restaurant is. We enjoyed every dish from the razor clams to the grilled char bellies to the striploin to the potato bread to the champagne. The razor clams were a first for us and were delicious. I appreciate how the chef sources local and in season ingredients. Service was professional, and we never felt rushed which can be a pet peeve of mine when we make the latest reservation in the evening.We got an excellent table where we could see the water. I will return if I ever get lucky enough to go back to St. John's. read more

Terre is a wonderful fine dining restaurant in the Alt Hotel. We really had a lovely meal here. Also many thanks to the staff for accommodating our request for a slightly different chair which made such a difference to our comfort. They really do some innovative things with both the food and cocktails here. It really was a great experience. Definitely a special occasion spot! We probably overdid it on the amount of dishes, but it was seafood season, so we could not help ourselves. We shared everything. The lobster was a particular fave, as was the crab cake. But the halibut and mussel salad were also great. Modern vibe. If you end up in the middle of the restaurant you may end up looking into the kitchen. Wonderful dining experience. I didn't realize this was a hotel restaurant when I booked the reservation, and I'm glad for it because this place was so much better than I expected. We went for the "let the kitchen cook for you" option and had an utterly memorable meal. My favorites were the snow crab (pre-cut impeccably for easy eating), razor clams, lobster salad, NF welks (small sea snails), and the pavlova dessert paired with tart rhubarb and sorbet instead of the usual whipped cream (plus a few AMAZING perfectly ripe strawberries for our off-menu option). But the quail was also perfectly seasoned and the beef tongue was literally melt-in-your-mouth... seriously, I've now listed most of the meal, it was all really delicious. For drinks, I had a mocktail with surprising complexity and then followed up with an alcoholic "something nice" -- you can be as vague or specific as you like and the bar will make you something interesting. I got a delicious floral drink made with lilac syrup that was exactly the vibe I asked for. read more

+.5 for service This was our final meal in Newfoundland after a 7 day trip across the entire province, saving the best for last. Obviously this place has won awards, including the best new hotel restaurant in 2021 by Air Canada. I was able to reserve a table for 3 a couple days before, which was good because the restaurant was completely full when we arrived around 8:30pm. The ambiance is upscale here. I had oysters, tuna tartare, smoked mussels, clams with snow peas, and grilled quail. All were overall very good, the smoked mussels were unique in that it doesn't come with the shells at all. The snow peas surprised me in how big they are. The oysters were the highlight though, a dozen for $48 and they were huge in size. The grilled quail was certainly unique, not for the faint of heart if you don't like gamey meat. I liked it, though I would've liked a bit more meat than what we got. Note the menu here changes frequently. I can tell because when I was writing this review I noticed the menu was different from what I had. Service was excellent here. Certainly pricey, and it's arguable whether I believe the value was worth it or not. I'd say if you stick with the seafood options it's hard to go wrong here. read more

Yes it's attached to a hotel, but it is NOT a hotel restaurant (in the best way possible) the menu is not only top tier, but priced better than most delivery options. I had the pleasure of not only ordering but observing the craft of true cocktail excellence! If you're staying anywhere close to the Alt hotel, you must try terre! Not sure why restaurants located inside hotels get mixed reactions from people. We are staying at the Alt Hotel St. John's and even before the visit, Terre kept coming up as recommendations as a must try restaurants in the area - so it was incredibly convenient as well. Went for brunch today and it was incredible. We tried the Chantrelle Toast with poached egg and the Challah Perdu and both were amazing. The mushrooms were in season and so fresh. We even came away with great recommendation for dinner from our server. She didn't hesitate for a second to recommend where to go for best lobster roll or avoid tourist trap restaurant and try another place etc. for sure this will be on our list of places on every trip here. read more

Terre restaurant is the complete deal. The 14 course "Let our kitchen cook for you" menu option presented us with14 individual, different, beautifully presented and wonderfully delicious dishes. Lots of fish, with some beef and veggies and fruits too, all equally as good as each other. The staff were attentive, happy and helpful - ours directed us with a hand-drawn map to some local bars after our meal was done. The room was open, clean and inviting. A great ambiance. We'd go again in a heartbeat - we just need to get to St. John's more often! read more

The servers were working so hard. Overall our service was slow, and ours apologized twice before taking our drink order. I'm sure it's because they need more staff. We weren't sure what to order and she was very helpful. We had the beer can chicken. Abundant, tasty portions, plenty enough to take home. However, our immediate thought was that it tasted like Swiss Chalet. So it was good but not special. I did enjoy the smoked mussel salad and potato bread. My main comment has to do with ambiance. It was Friday at 6:15 and was very noisy. Maybe great if you're out with a group of friends or family, but for a romantic couple night out, it just wasn't the place or the atmosphere. We kept leaning in to hear each other. I was glad to see the place so busy, and the atmosphere is boisterous, so your enjoyment of it depends on whether you want a quiet night and how deep your wallet is. Maybe pass on the chicken and enjoy a meal at Swiss Chalet for the same quality at a fraction of price, and opt for other dishes instead. We do appreciate how hard the servers worked. This place is not ready for prime time! Don't waste your money here! You will be disappointed! Service was incompetent and extremely slow for a high end restaurant. Took us 4 hours to get out of the there. Lots of cheap vegetarian courses with a little bit of meat and a skeleton of a fish. We were two couples and had the tasting menu ($95) plus 2 wine pairings ($65). The server messed up the wine pairings at the start then knew nothing about the wine from start to finish. You'd think she'd catch on after we asked about the wine and where it was from on bottle number one. She had to read the back of the bottle to figure out the country and she wasn't smart enough to figure out we'd ask every time...so she read us the back of the bottle each time. Great value right there!! The kitchen also screwed up constantly and left big gaps between courses. I think they forgot about us at one point. I expect more when paying $800+ for a meal for 4. If you want a great dinner experience for the money spend it elsewhere in St. John's. read more

It is hard to decide on overall how to rate our meal as things were either really great or somewhat disappointing especially given the prices. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our vegetarian entrees and sides of vegetables prepared specifically for us by the chef - the food was well seasoned and perfectly cooked (and reasonably priced). The bread was tasty as were the mushroom appetizer. However, my other daughter and my husband both said their dinners were rather bland (they ordered beef which came with some vegetables). Both girls ordered and enjoyed the special surprise cocktails (designed by the bartender based on input each of my daughters provided to the waiter - a fun twist!). However, the wine by the glass options and size of the pour were both disappointing. We skipped dessert even though it was my daughter's birthday since the meal had been such a mixed experience (and she was full from her delicious dinner). read more
