I asked a number of people I knew from the Baylands Golf Links (where Dan teaches!) and they all said that Dan was the instructor they had selected. That was good enough for me. i have only had one lesson with Dan, and I already have my love for the game back! What I appreciate about Dan is that he likes to keep it simple and help you focus on one thing. That allowed me to get out of my head and focus on my set-up and swing. There will be more to learn, and I plan to take more lessons, but for now I am working on practicing the swing he set me up to have. With Dan you will not get a ton of input on mechanics. He is looking at you and your swing, then helping that swing to improve. His philosophy of everyone having their own swing and learning to embrace that swing within their own body makes a ton of sense to me and is far more motivating and enjoyable when I practice. On his first 9 hole Tournament he hit 60 stokes and end last one. Did not cry -Honesty, Respect, Integrity, Responsibility-, shook the hand of the other golfers -Sportsmanship-, and as soon as he arrived home took the 7 iron and started practicing -Perseverance-. On his second 9 hole Tournament he hit 42 strokes and end 2nd. He was very happy, yet not competitive, and was able to compliment and develop friendships with the other players. We attribute this behavior to the Nine Core Values learned at The First Tee.

I was stationed at the face-painting table and was busy for most of the event. There was food and refreshments available, but I was never offered even a bottle of water or told that food was available to volunteers. By the time I could finally step away, everything had already been packed up. I even saw the remaining ice from the beverage area being thrown onto the lawn. I understand that volunteering means donating your time. I was happy to donate mine. But I also believe volunteers--especially people providing professional services--deserve basic consideration and acknowledgment. I later noticed that the event recognized vendors, caterers, sponsors, and other contributors, but I did not see any recognition for the artists providing face painting. That was disappointing. Artists are professionals too, and our supplies, skills, experience, and time have value even when we choose to donate them. Before leaving, I asked whether there were any photos or video of me working because I was too busy face painting to take any myself. I was also hoping to receive a simple letter acknowledging my volunteer service and providing some feedback about my work. I reached out afterward, but I haven't received a response or even a letter acknowledging my participation. The actual face-painting experience was enjoyable, and the people I interacted with were courteous. The volunteer coordinator was also kind enough to let me take home one of the pink palettes, which I appreciated. I hope FIRST Tee Silicon Valley takes this as constructive feedback. Organizations that depend on volunteers should make sure those volunteers have water, access to food and breaks, appropriate recognition, and some acknowledgment of the time and professional skills they contribute. I would have loved to leave this experience feeling appreciated. Unfortunately, I left feeling more overlooked than valued.

June 2026 I retired…read morein December 2025 and decided to try golf. My wife and I never played before so we wanted to develop good habits before we made an attempt at golf. Coach Kelly was highly recommended by many of my friends. Consistently, they described him as chill, laid back and a great teacher. My wife and I booked a private session with him. We met at his house and he has an indoor golf simulator. On session one, we worked on grip, hip rotation and hinge. On session two (3 weeks later), Coach Kelly worked with our rotation, power shift in the hips and our follow through on the swing. From this point on, we will take individual lessons with him. We've incorporated everything he taught us and are making micro improvements as we continue our golf journey. Scheduling was simple. Prices very reasonable. And that man is Hawaiian! When she first came to him the summer leading up to her junior year, she didn't even know how to properly hold a golf club. Coach Kelly was so patient with her, encouraged her and because of his knowledge and teaching style allowed her to grow so much in such a short time.
