Yesterday morning, we woke up determined to clear out all the demolition wreckage that had been sitting by our driveway for the past month (major bathroom remodel): I'm talking a mound of moldy sheet rock, vinyl, bathtub, toilet, trim, cardboard - it was an ugly sight. (Although, it was a great landmark for my out-of-town friends driving in from the airport who were trying to find the house in the dark - it's the one with the toilet next to mailbox!) Someone mysteriously took our old toilet away (hope you are enjoying many a good flush, whoever you are!), but we still managed to fill every square inch of my boyfriend's 1987 Dodge Ram cab-enclosed truck, even after I stomped up and down on the wet cardboard. After a nerve-wracking drive to the TDSL (the engine was straining due to the heavy load and rear view mirror visibility was limited), we drove up to the front gates to find it CLOSED. Sorry folks - even the garbage men need to take Sunday off. So, if that drive wasn't scary enough, we went back at 6:30 this morning, through the fog, hoping not to get rear ended by an 18-wheeler - but, we made it safely. We emptied the truck in 15 minutes, and the total dumping charge was $17 dollars. A nice, older fellow took the bathtub from us, either to be recycled or stocked in their "dump store": chairs, lawn and gardening equipment, appliances, bicycles, old signs - unfortunately, we didn't have time to check out the goods. Who knew?! p.s. Another feature we didn't have a chance to check out: Garden-Ville, adjacent to the Landfill, is a subsidiary that makes organic gardening products including compost, soil blends, fertilizers and organic pest controls for both horticulture professionals and home gardeners. Now, that's true recycling.

If I could give them ZERO stars I would! We have utilized their shredding service for a while…read morenow. So why one star if we've been doing business for a while? Because they apparently don't use modern technology like calendars and phones. All is great as long as you don't need them to pick up the full bin. If you do, be prepared to get ghosted on the appointed day/time. Not just once but over and over again. This is where a calendar would come in really handy! They NEVER call you to tell you the schedule changed, or the driver is late or give you what ever (likely flimsy) excuse they have for not showing up. They must not have reliable phones! I would recommend this company to no one who needs reliable service. Look elsewhere.

L knows that with my B.A. in Political Science, paired with a keen understanding of politics, and my ability to get things done, I should be going places if I stick with it. What do I do exactly? Basically, I'm L's bitch. It's "The Devil Wears Prada", except instead of being sent to glamorous boutiques and tony restaurants, I'm sent to such exotic locales as the Chuy's off Barton Springs and the downtown post office to buy stamp coils. Here's where Balcones Recycling comes into play. Since everyone's so busy on a day-to-day basis, it appears that the cans of La Croix and bottles of Dublin Dr. Pepper in our kitchen have been accumulating I'd say, in a rough estimate, since April of Way Too Long Ago. Additionally, there was more untouched paper recycling in both the kitchen and the copy room than I believe there was actual paper stock. Apparently, the attorney in our office was about to lose his shiat because of the mess, and I was assigned the task of getting rid of the junk. This is absolutely not a problem. When I get going on deep cleaning and/or organizational kicks, I get on a roll and I won't stop until everything is perfect; my OCD is a powerful force I only unleash to do good. I wanted the crap out ASAP myself. I found a website online that listed nearby recycling centers, and while a tad confusing about who accepted what items, I figured Balcones would be my best shot. I asked L if they paid for cans, and she said she wasn't sure but if they did, I could keep the money as a tip. All 75 cents of it, I was guessing. Score. The drive into East Austin always makes me nervous, and this time was no exception. I found the location with ease, but all the parking spaces were full. Large 18-wheelers are constantly moving and out, and there is no signage about where one would drop off recyclables. I "creatively" parked and popped inside the office, where a friendly girl behind the desk explained there is a white dumpster just across the way that I could toss everything into. I thanked her, even though I was bummed I wouldn't be paid for my monstrous bag of cans. Nervously, I threw everything away as I prayed Kar would not be crushed by those damn trucks driving everywhere. The dumpster said "paper and cardboard only", so I double checked with the nearest guy standing around and he said I could go ahead and toss the cans in, too. Works for me As I left by narrowly escaping another incoming 18-wheeler, I felt proud of myself. I realized that I had just done my part to help maintain a sustainable environment for us, for our children, and for our beloved Planet Earth. Plus, L said I had to. 3 Stars.

That evening I realized that I did not get pics of the recall number written on the ladder. I called first thing in the morning to see if they happened to still have access to it. I spoke to Steve and he not only located the ladder, but sent me pics so I didn't have to go back up there. Everyone I have spoken to there were friendly and helpful. They deserve 10 stars! In March they failed to put out my trash, lied about it and sent me a picture of someone else's trash cans and house claiming it was mine, refused to come empty my cans and refused to give me a refund until I complained today. I have spent lots of time on the phone with these people and sent pictures of my house and trash cans and asked for a refund. No refund was given and they lied and said I had not sent pictures and no one knows who I talked to. I do not know why they would turn into such an awful company just by a name change. I am guessing different management. Avoid these people if you can.

I really wish they would tighten up their business operations and be more organized. I've had the service at two different addresses. At the first one I constantly had problems with my bucket not being picked up because I lived on a back unit and somehow my pedaller would forget or not look out very closely for my bucket or an alternate pedaller was not aware that I was on the back of the lot. It grew frustrating enough that I was even mildly relieved to find out my new apt was outside their coverage area. Fast forward a few years and I've resumed service and my experience has become equally frustrating. One week our whole bucket was taken for no reason. For a weekly service that involves keeping a bunch of food scraps, gaps in service are pretty inconvenient. When I contacted them about the missing bucket they promised to bring a new one the next week and then informed me that my pickup date had actually been moved to a different date about 3 weeks ago (though how my bucket managed to get picked up the previous week on the old day I have no idea). I didn't receive any notification about this date change whatsoever. Finally for the July 4th holiday I didn't receive any notification about whether the holiday affected pick up service and clearly it did because my bucket was not picked up and I have no idea if there was an alternate day. When everything goes smoothly the service is super convenient and wonderful but when the service becomes consistently trouble filled it's becoming more of a headache than it's worth it. I'm sad to have to leave such a negative review because I was ecstatic when I first found out about Compost Pedallers. There is definitely a niche that they fill, but the service had been so dissatisfying. Others small things too like how the list of what's compostable on the website is so inconvenient to read and it's not easy to quickly search for specific items. It's all just a home grown service I get it but I really wish they would polish up and run this business better.

But I have found these guys to be inconsistent and ultimately undependable in regards to pick up. I understand that these are just local folks on bikes, and that they're subject to weather and other unpredictable factors, but essentially, if you are charging people for services, then you're running a business. And if you're running a business, you need to make sure you provide the services your customers are expecting. I've had missed pickups due to bicycle mechanical issues as well as weather (rain). In these cases, I feel CP should make efforts to reschedule an alternate pickup on a different day that week. (I don't live in a home with a yard, and so holding on to a bucket of compost for another week (one time 3!) is not as feasible for me as it might be for others.) They did refund me a week's worth of fees once, however, I'd be much more excited about this company if they could improve their pick up reliability.
