For the last 8 years I have mistakenly trusted that ProTax would be my advocate against the appraisal district and their astronomical assessment of my property taxes. I have watched as my property appraisal value increased from $194,000 (2015), to $513,000 (2017) to $699,000 (2018). I called them on 2 separate occasions to make sure they were going to protest, and each time I was told that the appraisal districts values were accurate and were supported by recent comps. For that reason, they would not protest. This year I decided to protest for myself and quickly learned by looking at the comps that the $ sq/ft in 2017 and 2018 should have valued my property at $420,000. By Protax NOT protesting on my behalf, I have been unable to use those comps as the county doesn't accept comps older than the preceding calendar year. I have no idea why they did not protest. The fallout of this is that my property will be appraised at $280,000 MORE that what the comps support. My advice, protest your own taxes. Don't assume, like I did, that protax will do it for you. read more

These guys are the absolute worst. They barely communicate and they promised if they didn't lower my tax bill that i would not have to pay anything. Then they come back to me with $55.00 bill because they tried. I fin ally try to pay the bill and no one answers and when i finally do they tack on a 3% surcharge to my credit card. Texas Pro Tax (Austin) has been successful in negotiating my tax appraised value, in a downward direction, for over 5 years in a row now. They keep money in my pocket, and their fees are very reasonable, considering the savings they bring me. read more

I have to say that I am EXTREMELY disappointed with the service provided by ProTax on my behalf. I am a real estate broker and have performed my own protests in the past. This year, the tax value on my property doubled so I thought it would be a good idea to hire the "experts" at ProTax to contest for me because it was such a large increase. These "experts" only were able to achieve a 3% reduction despite completely gutted and remodeled homes on the same street appraised at a similar amount. I find it almost embarrassing that PROTAX actually sent me an invoice for the piddly tax savings they were able to negotiate with their protest. I have recommended this company in the past based on client feedback, but based on my own experience, I would not use them again and WOULD NOT RECOMMEND to my clients in the future. read more

If you're considering protesting your property taxes, I'd highly recommend enlisting Texas Protax. Reason 1: You've probably never formally protested your own taxes before, and they've probably done it eleventy-billion times by now. Reason 2: You [hopefully] have better, more productive/rewarding things to do with your time. Reason 3: You only pay for their services if they're able to save you money (you pay a percentage of the money they save you). They'll get some basic info from you upfront and then get to work, so that you can get back to whatever else it is that you do. Texas Protax did a great job on negotiating my house values with the appraisal district. Roy Cantu was my agent and he was able to get my value lowered significantly. If I had done this on my own I wouldn't have gotten the great results that I did working with a professional like Roy. He walked me through the steps that he was going to take, answered all of my questions, and set me up with the online portal that shows me the progress of my protest. I was recommended to Protax from a trusted co-worker. While I was successful protesting on my own last year, the time it took to build my evidence plus the 1/2 day of work missed on hearing day (TCAD was running 2+ hours behind schedule on my protest day), made me think it might be worth hiring a "professional" this year. Similar to Jens B. and Chris L. I received the same, confusing, e-mail "rejection" from Protax. (1) I called Texas Protax May 2nd to ask a few questions including their sign up process. I stated my property was in Travis County, she told me to complete an online application and a consultant would contact me via e-mail within 3 days, but typically sooner. NO mention that they were NOT accepting new Travis County customers. (2) Protax website (and online application) states nowhere that they are NOT accepting new Travis County customers. So, I completed and submitted my application online and waited for my e-mail response. Nearly 22 hours later, I received the same "boilerplate" rejection e-mail. Why did it take 22 hours to reject my application if they are rejecting all new Travis County customers? Confused, I called Protax hoping to get an explanation. Asking specifically which "...policy and procedure changes at Travis Central Appraisal District, the nature of which may limit the ability for property owners to have the same access for the resolution of market value appeals..." happened this year. With no direct answer to my question from Protax, she did offer they ARE accepting new Travis County customers on a "limited basis"...unfortunately just not mine. Huh? Without satisfactory response from Protax, I decided to call TCAD to ask what possibly changed year to year that would make a protest company NOT accept new customers. I was told it may be due to the fact TCAD no longer allows "walk-in" informal meetings...a property owner's informal meeting is only possible immediately prior to, but same day as, the scheduled formal hearing date. Ah hah...their consultants' schedules are now more difficult to plan. My view...Protax is "cherry-picking" new Travis County customers to minimize their protest time and maximize (potential) profit. If, after analyzing our data at application, Protax determines our property won't earn them enough money, we get rejection letters blamed on TCAD. Shame. While it's understandable and necessary for business' to maximize profits with pressure of limited time & resources, step up and be clear and honest about the situation. Take responsibility and don't blame others. I, for one, would have respected you more. This isn't the kind of company I want to do business with. read more

Texas ProTax saved me money the first year I used them but, in subsequent years, the savings became smaller and smaller. The last year I used them (2020) they saved me a total of $0.55 between two properties but they still charged me $320. I called to politely ask if this was a mistake and was told there were certain minimum amounts they charged regardless of the amount of the "savings". There are other businesses that offer property tax appeals, I recommend you use someone other than Texas Protax. read more

Just want to say that Texas ProTax was wonderful to talk to today. The agent Dave told me what to do in my particular situation to file a protest regarding my property values- without any charge. For Travis County properties, ProTax successfully blunts the trend of overly aggressive county assessors. I'm very satisfied with ProTax results. They are also available by phone, and they provide specific insights to my properties and comps. For fairness, they are less successful in Williamson County, but that's more to say about the County's more credible methodology as compared to Travis County. read more

I've used Protax for a couple years and their level of service has steadily declined while their fee percentage has increased. They are very hard to get ahold of (if at all), and they take a very long time to respond via email to questions about your appraisal protest process. This year they saved me zero $. It's hard to put into words just how disappointing Texas Protax has been but I'm willing to give it a shot. It's Friday July 10th and my wife has called three times since Tuesday June 30th, leaving messages each time in the hopes that we could enlist the services of Texas Protax. No response. The lady who answers the phone is extremely pleasant and does her best to be helpful so she gets kudos. Since my wife is now out of the country I called this morning at 9am, explained the situation to the nice lady who answered the phone and then left a voicemail for the agent to call me back. Still nothing. Four calls in a week and a half and no response. No quick, "We're swamped right now and we'll get back to you" or "We're swamped right now and unable to take on new clients." Nothing. If you're looking for a company to handle your tax protest this is definitely not the one. read more

So I've asked Protax to protest appraisal of a new home bought from developer. They didn't put any extra effort other than sending the settlement with real house price. It's hard to find the information on what's the actual % they are taking off the savings. Turns out it's 40% which is a steal for the amount of effort they've put into this. If I could rate TCAD, I would give them zero stars. I went in for my informal protest hearing armed with with a 4-month old HUD-1 and certified state appraisal and the TCAD agent just blew a bunch of smoke in my direction. Then I went next door to Pro-tax and within a month and zero work from my end, they had my property reduced from 239k to 150k - just like that. Its amazing that an industry can exist solely on the inability for our county appraisal district to do their job. But I'm glad Protax is here to fill the gap! I would avoid using this company Texas Protax, not good experience in representing my house in Wilco county. They can offer up any excuses they want, but the bottom line is they were ineffective. They were unsuccessful in representation on my property for 3+ years. I'm still paying maximum tax rates per appraisal district. Even worse, they entered into an agreement on final value of my property without the district even rendering an Order of determination (worst part) and waived all of my legal rights in the process. They essentially just gave up without much fight in a proper hearing, rendering their representation service useless, in my experience. Bottom line is if you want something done right you've got to do it yourself. read more

BEWARE: I filled out the new customer form on Texas Protax' website, and immediately got a Docusign link to a formal contract. The contract created a strong impression that all tax-related information would be circulated between Texas Protax and the taxing authority, and gave me no sense of security that I'd have visibility into the process. So I didn't sign the contract-- but I sent email in response (to the authorization@texasprotax.com address), asking for clarification on this. EVERY DAY for the next WEEK, I got obnoxious "reminder" emails with the Docusign link, imploring me to sign the contract, but ZERO response to my questions. On day FOUR, after it became clear that my question was going to go unanswered, I responded "STOP SENDING THIS TO ME". The obnoxious reminder emails kept coming! On day EIGHT, I sent another email, this time to info@texasprotax.com, asking again to STOP SENDING THE EMAILS, and to REMOVE MY CONTACT INFO from their database. I made it clear that I was NO LONGER INTERESTED IN THIS SERVICE. Well, guess what? *THAT* email got a response -- but the person who responded COMPLETELY IGNORED MY REQUEST to stop sending me the authorization nags and remove my email from their list! Instead, they made an attempt to answer my ORIGINAL question (from the first question I had sent over a WEEK before). And have the reminder emails stopped? NO! I'm STILL getting them! If this behavior doesn't raise your antenna to "high alert" mode, then you are not paying attention. No reputable service would treat prospective customers this way, by shoving a contract in their face first thing (their website gives PRECIOUS little detail about the process), and then **HARASS** you to sign the contract, and **IGNORE** your clear indications that you are no longer interested in their services. Only a shady, money-hungry company that doesn't care a WHIT about you would treat you in this manner. BEWARE. In fact... ***RUN***!! read more

I have used Texas Protax for several years to help control the tax costs on my home. I had successfully protested on my own for a few years, then unsuccessfully for a couple of years more. I looked at a similar service based out of Houston, but could never speak with someone who worked there. I dropped that company and went with Protax. They know what they are doing and are good at their jobs. I highly recommend them. The staff at TCAD are not impartial and have no incentive to work with individuals. The only way to slow the out of control appraisals and sky rocketing tax bill is to use a competent service like Protax. They may not drop the value every year, but if they keep it steady, then they are worth their weight in gold. read more

Don't every use this service. It has to be the biggest scam going for people who are too busy to take off work and protest their taxes. Like several other reviews, I gave them notice that I no longer wanted to use their service over the phone and via email since we were selling ours house. After 2-years I started getting collection notices ... What ???. I called and they told me they had no record of me wanting to stop using them. I sent them the email again but they keep denying they received it and kept sending collection notices. We did not live in the house when they say they protested our taxes. YOU HAVE BEEN WARDED !!!! Mr. Bullard came on my case only one day before my hearing and was extremely helpful in this last-minute crisis. Another client and I had the same situation so he was able to convince the panel to take us together gave everyone involved a little break. We won our appeal, thanks in part to sheer luck, but I think Mr. Bullard's personality and long relationship with the parties at TCAD was a huge help. Some people have good luck protesting their own taxes, but I had limited success. The resulting reduction was always near the capped value anyway -- and I went in with comps of the EXACT SAME David Weekley model houses within 15 miles, all valued significantly less (50k-120k less) than my house (I had great documentation, too: maps, photos, addresses, values). They did a good job, lowered the taxes on one of my duplexes, but BUYER BEWARE they charge a 40% fee on the taxes that they lower. That's a big chunk of change. Also the were unable to lower the taxes on another one of my duplexes, but at no fault of their own efforts. read more
