River City Futbol Club is the newest amateur, travel soccer team in the San Antonio area. The club…read moreis new but already off to an amazing start, run by the young, energetic director and coach, Demingo Lopes. The club has plans to expand to at least four teams and is holding tryouts for players born between '97 and '01 throughout May '12. Check out their site -- http://www.rivercityfc.com -- for all the details. My son is now in his second season with Demingo (first season with River City FC). He and we, his parents, have nothing but positive to say about the experience. We were a struggling team suffering from inconstant coaching for years. In one season, Demingo took us from mid-table to winning our division. Now we are playing up and enjoying the challenge of it. As far as fees, compare them to any other pay club in the San Antonio -- and Austin, for that matter -- club and you'll be surprised that RCFC is the least expensive of the lot, which came as a complete surprise. A real value. The kids learn quickly and grow as people along the way. We've had mixed experience with other clubs along the way -- literally being taught to cheat to win or being yelled at in an utterly non-helpful manner -- but again, it's all been positive since our switch to RCFC.

We spent two years with this club and it was nothing but frustration. The owner repeatedly asks for money from the parents, despite them having already paid a full years' dues, only to pocket almost every penny. Hence the reason he was constantly needing more money from the parents. How he is still in business is a mystery. This club is a farce.

I appreciate any form of entertainment that in a serious way doesn't take itself seriously. And in…read morea roundabout way basks in its own campiness. I must admit I'm a latecomer to the whole roller derby sport(It is a sport by the way). My point of reference has always been the Raquel Welch film, " Kansas City Bombers" of yesterday. The perception by it that the roller girl is eye candy first and athlete thereafter is how most of us (mainly men)have been informed. But entertainment changes with the mores of any given generation. So now the fingerless gloves, decorated helmets, kneepads, skates that spit fire, the catchy as hell names: "Meri-Death", "Violet Protest" "Sock er' Mom" take on a much bigger significance. Girl Power is in full bloom here. And these ladies kick a$$ then take names. Which makes it all the more powerful. When a derby girl falls to the floor, you feel its impact. A quick overview of what to expect: There is parking away from the sports complex. Which means you will be walking in the dark after the event. I suggest you pay the $5 fee to park closer. It's also cheaper to buy tickets online. In addition they host events to promote their games at various local breweries; a perfect opportunity to buy tickets on the cheap. Otherwise it's $13 bucks at the door, well worth the price. As for seating you can choose any spot on a bleacher. The only thing is that the two periods stretch and after awhile you will feel it on your bum. As an ACRG newbie I didn't quite know what to expect. I also wondered why some people weren't sitting up front. Big Mistake. At any given moment a derby girl might fly right into your lap, leaving me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Girls zip by you. Smashing. Crashing. Colliding. Elbowing. Punctuated by more physical contact. Make no bones about it these ladies are ready to risk certain injury to entertain but above all to win. If in reading this you do not know what the object of the game is don't worry neither do I. By the second half you will understand it better. And as you see derby girls dashing through lanes there is a "heart" peeking out, a sense of community. For example I saw a girl with her mom in a makeshift derby outfit. I could sense that she was fan-girling throughout the game. At half time they made her an honorary team member, handing her a specially created shirt. You can tell it made her night. When she becomes a derby girl I'm sure she'll remember that gesture. The Alamo City Roller Girls is campy, good fun. The elbows are delivered with a "Kapow!" And the crowd does a mini wave as a jammer parts a moshpit of skaters. If you're looking for an experience somewhere between a Joan Jett's concert and a Texas Death Match this will be for you. Just mind your nachos if you choose to sit up front.

You guys more than definitely deserved the win and I'm happy to say that I was there to see it happen. The crowd was revved, the music was loud and the game was great! For those of you not familiar with roller derby or have only watched on tv, I encourage you to make it a point to come to a LIVE game. Especially where the ACRG is concerned - they rock!

We thought the coach was overly critical, punitive, and only worked with a handful of kids. However, the assistant coach was great and took an interest in the girls and was a good teacher. I believe she actually played college VB. Practice days and times changed regularly and last minute tournaments were added. Even with constant practice and tournaments, the team never really came together. We feel we were promised things at the beginning, but after we paid, reality was much different. Our daughter basically lost a year of development because of this club and the coach. We'll have to double up on privates in order to make up for what was lost. That's if she even wants to play anymore. It was that bad. We left a great coach and good club for what we thought was an "elite" club. We were sadly mistaken. We were warned about this club before we signed with them, but we ignored the warnings. Lesson learned.

I called as soon as I realized this, I called and left a message so they can get the stamp time and date on the message. We needed to reschedule for the correct Sunday. I am not requesting a refund, I'm requesting to adjust. If they require to cancel 24 hours for staffing, I don't think adding my daughter as a mistake would affect how many coaches are there within minutes.
