The prices might be on the high side, but it's a small price to pay if you don't want to try and find BevMo or a Total Wine and More. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR RECEIPT HERE!!! Can't emphasize this enough. I've been to this place a bunch of times. I never usually check the receipts when I go to places, I usually do quick math in my head and if it feels right I move on. But this place has tried to pull a fast one on me twice now and I'm done. Today they never gave me a receipt after I used Apple Pay and while walking to my car I did my quick math and it felt off. I went back in and asked for a receipt. Turns out they charged me for a cigar I never bought and overcharged me by $10 on a bottle of wine. Talk about customer service. I was doing a friend a favor and buying him a couple bottles of Bourbon he couldn't find around his way. When I was being rung up, the price was double what I expected. I said that that wasn't the right price for that brand, but was told that I was mistaken because this was a different version that was much more. Taking the cashier at his word, I bought it. Shame on me. After sending my friend a photo and telling him that this was some special version I'd gotten him, he told I'd been had. I returned and politely asked to return the bottles but was told the state of CA doesn't allow that. I asked if they could offer me credit, to which they said no as well. First and last time I'll ever shop at this store. I'm angry at myself for believing them and assuming they weren't out to get me. Prices are astronomical, the staff is misleading. This place probably has the best selection of booze in the Carlsbad Village area. That being said, the competition isn't exactly stellar. There's a few other smaller liquor stores and perhaps the worst Smart & Final I've ever been to, so Texas Wine & Spirits kinda wins the award by default. They didn't blow me away with any cool beer or wine offerings, but the one major plus is the box of booze they usually have at the front where you can mix and match labels at a discount. I got a couple of flavors flavors for a fraction of the price which was awesome. Guys at the register we're nice enough and the sketchy drunkard waiting outside factor was at a minimum which is usually not the case at a little shop like this. Glad we found this place! It satisfied our beer hunt for the night. The shop is kind of small but its jam packed with tons of alcohol! There is a huge selection of craft beers and wines which makes it even harder to choose from. We took our time and browsed around all the shelves and ailes until we found a honey blond ale from Me so Honey and a dark chocolate stout from Rouge. Both were very good and a decent price around $6 each bottle and the bottles were a decent size, just enough to share. This place made our night. read more

This review has been a long time coming as I've been a regular of Texas Wine and Spirits since moving to Carlsbad six months ago. This is THE place to buy craft beer in Carlsbad, and here's why: 1. They get Pliny on the regular. Don't believe it? Check their Instagram. In fact, any rare, new, or otherwise interesting beer goes up on their IG page, and I can't tell you how many different types of beer I've been exposed to by this. 2. They stock tons of local beer. 3. If they don't have something you're looking for, they will order it for you. 4. Random and frequent tastings in the store. I had some Aztec samplers the other day, and there was even a lady in there doing vodka tastings the same day. 5. Selection. For such a small place, Texas Wine & Spirits has it all. Sours, IPA's, Belgians, Saisons, Barley Wines, Stouts, Porters, Pale Ales, you get the picture. Massive selection. 6. Location. Easy to get to off of the 5 and Carlsbad VIllage Drive. 7. Service. Ryan and his team are super cool guys. 8. Oh yeah, they also have a massive Wine and Spirits selection as well. At the time of this writing, they had 3 different bottles of Pappy Van Winkle in the case. 9. Price. A lot of people have complained about some of the pricing at Texas Wine & Spirits, but it's in line with most places in town. Nice liquor store. The employees are all really friendly. They always help out and answer any questions and make suggestions. Very kind people here. They have a pretty large selection of wine, beer, hard liquor. I wish they had a larger sake collection but one of the employees did tell us that they are working on it so I am very excited! Selection is great. Guys are pretty cool. My issue is this: you really have to be aware of the fact that these guys do not have the time to make sure their beers are fresh. I have made the mistake of just grabbing beer without checking the date of which it was brewed, which is a huge mistake on my part. Apparently my brother, who also lives here in town has been doing the same. IPAs typically start to change their flavor after four months. Some are still good at five months, maybe six but after that they really hard to right. These guys are cool about giving you a credit if you make this mistake but between my brother and myself we've made it half a dozen times at Texas. Moral to the story: Drink fresh Beer read more

4 Stars for beer selection alone (and they have liquor too). It's a smaller sized place with a giant sized inventory. They carried all my favorites and some that I couldn't find in other places. Brew Dog, Abita, Bootleggers and all the local beers you could want. Pretty good selection of imports as well (if you like those). The cashier we dealt with was friendly enough and treated us fine. This place has really gone downhill in the last year or so. I used to be a frequent customer because they have a large beer selection and were often the only store in town that carried some limited releases. They also had decent prices on everything. However, lately they seem to have just gotten very greedy. They charge a mark up on any beer that is remotely popular (Pliny for $15 for example), and often their stock is months old. I feel like I have to search through 5 or 6 different beers to find an IPA that was brewed in the last month or two. The most egregious example of their greed is in their spirit prices though. Nearly everything is marked up $10 to $20, with some of the less common stuff marked up even more. Their mark up on bourbon is so high in fact, that it is cheaper for me to buy half a tank of gas, drive to Total Wine or Hi-Time Wine in Orange County, and buy my spirits there rather than at Texas. If you are looking for beer in North County, I'd recommend going to one of the local BevMos, or Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido. Texas is now a last resort place for me if I can't find something at another store. read more

This truly is a hidden gem in Carlsbad. From the outside, it appears to be your average, everyday liquor store that just happens to have an affinity for Texas. Odd? Yes, but dust off the old boots and step inside and you will see why. Being a Texan by marriage, I have learned the age old adage "everything's bigger in Texas" is true. Well, in this case, everything's bigger in Texas Liquor. They have one of the biggest selections of beers I have seen. So many tasty microbrews, it really is a chore to try and pick just one or two. The wine and liquor selection looks Texas-sized as well, but I have not even ventured into that territory yet. Waiting for the owner to call me after a complete fiasco . I will update my review after the owner calls to make it right. I purchased a bottle and agreed to pick it up later in the afternoon. First off, it's a $95 bottle of beer (Approx. 350% markup) that me and some friends were going to split the cost of. Tough to find, but figured if we split the cost, not as bad. I show up, AFTER MY CARD HAS ALREADY BEEN RAN AND THE MONEY TAKEN OUT OF MY BANK ACCOUNT.. Only for them to tell me "here is what happened, we sold too many". So after I paid you $95+, you didn't remove the item and put it behind the counter? Actually, I am sure they did.. Knowing the reputation of these guys, someone came in and offered a few dollars more for the bottle that was already purchased, and they took his money and figured they would smooth talk me into something when I came in. So they tell me the bad news, and try to offer me a COMPLETELY different bottle that is NOWHERE NEAR the price of what I paid, for the same price. After I kindly said no thank you to their poor attempt to keep my $95, they then started saying that they would give me a $115 store credit for anything in the building. So... you want to give me $20 store credit so I you can keep my $95 and spend it on already incredibly high marked up beer prices. UPDATE: No call from the owner, as expected. Will not be stepping back into this place. I always heard people tell me they stopped going here because "man they over price their bottles like crazy", or "I always feel like I am getting taken every time I am in there". Well, I kept going back because I never had anything happen to me. Well here it is, the shadiness got me. It's San Diego, plenty of other bottle shops to go instead of dealing with shady businesses. I have only stopped by if I was heading back home from the beach and needed a 6-er. This weekend was the first time I actually took time to take a look around this place. Damn, they seem to have every local micro brew in here. While I didn't check out the wine selection, it covers the whole opposite side of the beer wall. I was seriously impressed at their selection, and I even took about 10 minutes to pick out a beer. While their selection is huge, they are a $1-2 (6pk) more than what you would pay at say a BevMo or supermarket. My favorite craft beer bottle shop in Carlsbad. The guy who stocks their beer also works at Belching Beaver, so he's truly in-the-know when it comes to craft beer. I usually see him when I stop in on Saturday's and we chop it up about what's new in stock, what we've each tried and were impressed/disappointed in. In an area of the country where access to world class beer is plentiful, it takes a lot of rare, unique or very-hyped beer to get me excited.
