This place is a great option for grabbing drinks and waters for the beach! In the summers, I often stop here on the way to Carlsbad beach. They have a lovely selection of booch craft and single cans of most anything you could want. Service is always pleasant and quick. Shop is clean and well lit. I always swing by and grab something for her and some kava shots for me. They had greet me by my name. They always take the time to see how I'm doing. It's always organized. WARNNG - Check them when they ring up on the credit card machine. Just went here today and bought a $3.50 ice cream sandwich for my kid. Saw it rung up as $3.50 on the register and then saw the guy run my card for $4.00 quickly. We were in a rush and I didn't feel like dealing with this POS over $.50 - but he tried to be quick about it, didn't offer a receipt, and when we got home I checked to confirm I didn't miss it...and we got charged for the $4.00 price. Unrelated to ice cream - their prices for booze are insane. At least 25% above other stores in the area. The one that caught my eye was Belle Meade for $79.99 ($45 at Ralphs), but other standard bourbons were all (way) overpriced. Decent enough selection - had various Wellers, Bookers, Blantons and other things...but all overpriced by a large amount. Only went here out of convenience and would not go back. read more

All seemed well when I purchased a couple of bottles of wine and a gallon of water for our stay in Carlsbad. Upon opening the Oregon wine blend, I tasted it. It tasted horrible like it was spoiled. I said nothing to my wife and asked her taste the wine. She spit it out, as she said it was terrible. We then walked back to the store to return the wine. The other bottle of white wine was fine. Upon returning to the store, I asked the clerk to please provide me a refund, as the wine was spoiled. I told him I had my receipt. He said They didn't sell that wine. Then he said who'd I buy the wine from. I said in this store would you like to see my receipt. What did the guy look like?, he said. I said he was a tall man with dark hair. When I bought it from him he was watching the Miami vs Florida football game on the tv above the door. The man said no refunds. You have to come back when that guy is here. I honestly have no idea how someone can own a business and treat customers this way. It was an almost $20 bottle of wine. I'll try the credit card company to see if they will get me a refund. After 24 years of living in New York City, spending all of my 6 AM's with tired people taking the subways, getting knocked aside by folks running late to work, and being ushered out by waiters because the line outside wraps around the block, I can, without having a second thought, say that the owner here was most rude person I've ever met. My friends and I were walking around town and noted the funny signage. "Big Pig Liquors." Seemed funny, and plus we needed some liquor! So we went in and asked for vermouth (which is my favorite drink), and he told us "we don't have that." We decided to take a look around for other things, and immediately saw 3 different kinds of vermouth, in 2 different sizes. Clearly, this guy had no clue what was in his store, and didn't seem interested in helping us search his own store, for his own inventory. No matters. We started looking at the vermouth, and I noticed one of them was an orange one, so I flipped it around and started googling what it was and what it tasted like. All of a sudden, he turns to us and says "you better be careful, don't break those glasses." I thought it was a joke, and responded back "Okay I'll try!" (Because what a stupid ass thing to say. No shit, Sherlock, it's a liquor store, everything is glass). To which he responds "don't try, just do it." At this point, my other friend who was already checking out on line tries to continue the niceties and says "don't worry, they won't break anything!" And he says back to her "oh yeah? Why are you answering for them? You a mind reader? You can read their minds?" And despite all this, we thought: let's just get our alcohol and get out of here. But as we waited on line, he continued to spout things at us, seemingly unprompted. We put our alcohol down and left. Don't be fooled by the signage. "Big Pig Liquors" is not a name to signal fun alcohol at a beach town. It's to signal the absolute swine running the place. read more
