For reasons unbeknownst to me, this place operates as a takeout only in a quiet space that was a bit hard to figure out. When I did pull up to the window, I was skeptical that my takeout would be ready in the short time it took me to drive there, but someone immediately came to offer me my food. The drunken noodles I got extra spicy had an abundance of dried chili on top, and the wide rice noodles were properly springy. The flavor was missing a little depth, but the portion was solid. I was surprised that the ginger-based tofu dish actually tasted better, with a modest amount of spice but plenty of ginger and black bean sauce and of course that aromatic jasmine rice distinctive to the cuisine. A set of potato-filled curry puffs made the whole thing into a solid two meals. It wasn't up there with the best, but there was some legitimate quality and the convenience of this was likely better than other options I was looking at for vegetarian food in Lynchburg. read more

This is a spot where some dishes are ok, and some really aren't. I've had an acceptable curry from here, and ok Grapow. But guys, your Pad Thai is the worst I've ever had. Where are the peanuts? Where are the bean sprouts? Dried shrimp? The preserved radish? My takeout pad thai was a lot of noodles, a smattering of sauce, and a ridiculously small serving of protein, with none of the accoutrements that a proper pad thai should come with. We came as a group of 10 people (3 adults & 7 kids) 30 mins before the place closes! From what I could tell there were only 3 people working, I presume the owner, cook and a waitress. They were very obliging and quickly sat us down, took orders and brought out all the food in 15 mins and never made us feel rushed and did everything they could to make us comfortable. The food was freshly made and extremely delicious, just the way we like it. Needless to say we tipped the waitress generously for going well above the call of duty and staying a few minutes later than expected. We would love to eat there but our home is 20 minutes away and there is nothing worse than cold Asian food... I really miss eating there they were all so nice... Y'all, I was hesitant on this one. The outside is not a place that makes you go "this is gonna be good", but I had read the reviews and was going to stick it out. We walked in an there were only two other tables so I was still hesitant. They told us to sit wherever. We picked a booth and waited a while before getting served. It actually took a while and my husband had to actually go up to the register and tell the waitress (only one) that we wanted to order. This is why the review is only 4 stars. Let's talk about the food though. It's awesome. Some of the best Thai I've had in a while. We both went with the Pad See Yew and it was so good. I got the egg roll appetizer and he got lemongrass soup. Both came out piping hot and beyond fresh. Everything was fresh. Still can't get over how good the food was. The best Thai food in the entire Central VA area!! Owned by the nicest family always giving great service and amazing food!! If you want something fresh I would order Pad Khing (a fresh ginger dish) or Green Curry (fresh basil curry). If you want something sweet but tangy I would order a lemongrass soup or the sweet & sour dish that comes with fresh pineapples. The basil fried rice is my favorite fried rice dish. They will accommodate to any of your health and dietary needs as well! When we moved to Lynchburg 20 years ago, Thai 99 became one of our regular dining locations. We live downtown but that was before downtown was filled with local restaurants. Then we adopted a 3 1/2 year-old and discovered that she was not exactly a copacetic restaurant eater so we took a break from eating out. I. And then Downtown just took off with restaurants so getting in the car to go out to eat disappeared. But Thai 99 has carried on, and the young boy that used to amuse himself at one of the tables, and seem to be part of the family has grown up! And I still live downtown, but just sold my car and have discovered that I can order delivery from some of my old favorite places like Thai 99! I wonder if it's the same people who are running the place 20 years later? And I wonder if 3/4 of their customers order pod Thai? The food that Uber eats brought me today was excellent and I still have a little leftover for later. One of the benefits of getting rid of my car. read more

Oh dear. So what happened here? It's seems that I must've caught them on a good day OR their dinner chef is better than their lunch chef. Ever since my last visit, I've had a Tofu Pad Thai, Tofu Pad Kring and Thai Salad. Hmmm... perhaps I need to revisit Blue Orchid again. The flavors on these two separate occasions were all relatively bland and one note. Very sad. I wasn't impressed by the spice factor, and all the flavors tasted relatively separated, making it an un-cohesive dish. The curries have gotten watery as well. The only spot like it to my knowledge in LYH, Thai 99 has been crushing the Thai food scene in LYH for years. I am a big fan of their curry--it is a feast of umami that draws upon spice and ample filling to fill you up and leave more left over for lunch the next day. Their medium hot sets the bar for me on a curry that packs a small punch yet is still enjoyable. I also love their soup (I think its a lemongrass vegetable soup?); it's incredibly refreshing and satisfying. Also, their dumplings are absolutely HUGE, and theyre pretty good to boot! Not the most flavorful I've ever had, but good nonetheless. The only thing I cant recommend is the rangoons as I just didn't like how small they were nor the flavor. When I lived in L.A., Boston, and NYC, I was spoiled by the number of really good Thai restaurants. Thai 99 is not one of those restaurants. Don't get me wrong -- the Pad Thai is pretty good, and so are some of the other items on the menu. But they don't consistently hit it out of the park on the quality side. Occasionally the food is just sort of 'okay.' Service, in my experience has run the gamut. I've had some friendly, efficient servers, but then I've also had a server who grilled me with personal questions (hello, inappropriate much?) as well as one that was obviously under the weather, blowing his nose where I could see him (but I couldn't see if he then washed his hands -- Purell to the rescue, in case he didn't. Yeah - I DID wipe down the edges of my dishes and glass with it, just in case). So, basically -- maybe ask for another server, if you get Mr. Questions or Mr. Sneezy. And don't expect to have a transcendent Thai Food Experience (okay, I hate the word 'transcendent' paired with food, so I'm saying that tongue in cheek), but you'll probably reasonably enjoy your meal, and it won't break the bank. Thai We were looking for new dinner place along the lines of Thai and with such limited options in the area, I found this place on Yelp. We headed over and found the place in no time, we grabbed a seat and the waitress got us on our way. Menu is pretty extensive for a Thai place; they had all the usual offerings that you would expect to see. We started out with some soup Tom Yum for me and coconut something for my girl. Both were fine and you can get them spiced any way you want. The mains all come in various degrees of hot, from let's call it American hot through what they call Thai hot. We tried the Thai hot on one of the dishes and even though it was hot I don't believe it was "Thai" hot... Portions we're good sized, and we couldn't finish all of the food we ordered. prices were average I would say for this area although I'm no expert on the quests for Thai in the Lynchburg area. Beverages are limited to soft drinks at this time, even though they do show some beers on the menu, they do not have a current license to sell beer apparently. There may be hit and miss selections--I'm not aware of the specific selections that may be off since I don't have the afore mentioned credentials--but the Pad Thai tastes mighty fine, the service is fast, and there are other dinner (I'm sorry--I meant "supper" with a Southern drawl) options that are as equally acceptable vittles. Thai food has always been one of my favorites. Thai food in a small town... not so much. However, Thai '99 will conquer all of your fears with their easy dining experience and wonderful food! The owners of the restaurant are always friendly and handy with a smile. The staff they employ know the menu very well and are always eager to give their opinions. I'm usually hesitant to have tofu at a lot of dining places due to texture and cutting, but Thai '99 never disappoints. The rice that comes with all curry dishes is a small portion. This is probably the best Thai food in Lynchburg. Coming from New York and experiencing Thai food on the east and west coast, Thai '99 is a pretty good contender for being tucked away in Lynchburg. One of my favorite Thai places! I love coming for lunch. You get soup, entree, and tapioca dessert all for ~8. Great price for a good amount of food. I'm currently passing through from out of town and thought I'd try this place, based on the positive reviews here on Yelp. I'm sorry to say I was gravely disapointed! I ordered the pad-see-ew, a favorite dish of mine. It was just plain bad! I've never had a dish prepaired so off from tradition. The noodles were clearly from a box, and cooked very al dente, rather than nice and soft. Every other time I've ordered this dish from any other Thai restaruarnt, the noodles were very broad and soft. No so at Thai '99! Also, the brown "gravy" was more like a light brown liquid, and with none to spare. The dish was very dry, and the flavorings were all wrong too. Pad-see-ew is a pretty typical stand by at most Thai restaurants. Before walking in here I thought, "how can you mess up Thai?" Ah, well they did! It's unfortunate because the people working here are very nice, and some of the other dishes I saw looked good. My meal, however, was not good at all. Also, the prices seemed high from what I'm used to at Thai restaurants I frequent at home in NYC. I can only speak for the meal I had. I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand, the owner is super accommodating and nice. She has a great service minded business which is what has kept me going back. The servers added mostly good, tho some could be forgetful at times. The lunch deal and price is pretty good. I really like the lettuce soup they serve. But, the food is mostly a miss. I've only had a couple spicier dishes that were OK. I think the spice helped. The problem is the parboiled meat used. It is flavorless. Even if the sauce is good, one bite into an unseasoned piece of chicken or shrimp is not appetizing. So this place gets 3 stars from me. It seemed a little overpriced at 10.99 for a bowl of white rice and a separate bowl of Red Curry Chicken, but it was actually rather good and I got it hot (not thai hot). I should have gotten Thai hot, as it was not hot enough IMHO, but the dish was tasty and I even drank the leftover juice after I was finished eating the meat, veggies, and rice. Ate here on a lunch date with the missus. It was the first time for each of us. In the past we ate at another local Thai place, where we both usually got the Panang Curry Chicken. I wanted to try something different, but my wife wanted to go with the tried an true. I ended up getting the Pad Gra-Tiem, which is supposed to be a Garlic and Pepper Chicken. I ordered it "hot" and this dish came out completely bland. There was no spice at all. On top of that, there was no flavor. I could not taste any garlic or black pepper. It was basically un-marinated chicken, stir-fry carrots and onions with some indecipherable liquid. I told the waitress about the lack of spice and flavor, and she brought me red pepper flakes and said "this is what they would have put on it to make it hot." There was no attempt to fix it, or offer to get something else. So why the three star review? My wife's food was decent, not exceptional, but decent. If I had ordered it, I would have given a three star review, because it was alright. I make a good Panang Curry Chicken at home, and this was equal to what I can make. I am not a Thai person, so I expect eating out at a Thai place that it would be much better than I can make at home. Hands down the worst Thai food I have ever had and that's pretty bad considering I've had Thai food ranging from CA to the Asia's. Service was good but the food is awful. I ordered yellow curry and it came out this sad green gray colour and was watery (real Thai curry is suppose to be a little thicker). The potatoes in my curry were sour as though they were soaked in vinegar and the 3 shrimps in my curry were over cooked giving it a rubber texture. The only decent part was the rice and the Thai tea and even then the tea was over milked. My friend's pineapple fried rice was more of a strange Spanish rice with some cashews and 4 pieces of canned pineapple. Also there was hardly any chicken in it. This is NOT representative of good Thai food. I believe the good reviews on here are locals that haven't tried other Thai food because their reviews are very counter to my experience and my friend's experience. read more
