Thai Cafe has great food and service. Could possibly dock it a star for the ambience but it is clean, just dated on the inside. Can see/hear/smell the kitchen which is right next to the dining area. I like this. Some might not like the sounds. Did I mention the food is awesome? Pretty much anything on the menu is good. I like Pad Ka Na (not on the menu but they made it), Pad See-U, their yellow potato curry, House fried rice is great also. Be careful because as with any Thai food cooked by a Thai chef, it is HOT. I generally order mild+ when most Thai places I will order medium. If you order Thai hot expect to pay the price... twice... Lol. Also, ALL the bad reviews are from more than 4 years ago. The food is wonderful. I was looking for Penang Curry and found something similar. I think the chef might be from a particular region and so what entrees we might think are "standard fare" are not in that region. At any rate I would definitely return. From the menu I get the impression they'll make whatever you like. How nice. The wait staff was really friendly. The place is a bit run down but the food makes up for the lack of decorum. The seating was dated but functional. Our waiter was good at getting our food out but the interaction was minimal. Not unpleasant but just very business wise. The food was good and was enough to make you full, so I don't know how much more you could ask. I asked for no green pepper with my chicken and peanut curry dish and they graciously added green beans to the plate. The flavor was good and the chicken was tender and plentiful. I ordered the pork spring roll and kind of regretted not getting the vegetable spring roll. I am not sure I would go back but it's worth a try if you're craving some Thai while in the area. read more

I was really craving Massaman and they didn't have it on their menu, but I asked the waitstaff and he said they make it if we ask about it. I was SO HAPPY that they were able to make it for me, and they made me Thai tea. 10/10 I will definitely be back! Note: both items are absolutely phenomenal! read more

Pad Thai is one of my favorite dishes. Their Pad Thai with chicken is pretty good. Not the best I've had but would get it again. My biggest complaint with almost all Asian restaurants is that they try to "Americanize" their dishes to suit American diners. I've found that some even have two different menus - an American version of their dishes and a traditional version. For me, the authentic Asian menu is always far superior. read more

I ordered my usual thai order here and wasn't that impressed. Drunken Noodles with Chicken and a Thai Tea. The Thai tea wasnt made fresh, and I had a feeling the chicken wasnt either. The chicken had a weird taste to it, and the thai tea came in a can. The noodles and veggies were good though, so I just steered clear of the chicken. We ordered the dumplings, which were freshly fried. They brought us out complimentary veggie soup, which was nice. The service was good, but it seems like they cut quality to save money to their detriment. read more

Came in with my coworkers for lunch on Friday for the first time. Located in downtown howell, this place is a gem! Service was quick and friendly. And they offered complimentary soup for everyone. It has chicken tho, I wish they had vegetarian options but that's okay. When ordering, our waiter told us that they use fresh chili's to cook with their food so the level of spice is hotter than usual. I usually order hot so I decided to go with medium. I ordered the pineapple fried rice with no peas and carrots. It actually had curry in it which was a nice kick. From a spice level perspective, it was spicy but I could have gotten hot and still been okay. I really love spice. Next time I want to try the drunken noodles. Can't wait to be back. read more

After three prior failed attempts to dine here, my wife and I finally succeeded at having dinner at the Thai Cafe, last night. Be advised: Being a family owned and operated business this place is closed on holidays and for a week or two during the Summer vacation season. Call ahead if not local. After reading recent reviews I had my doubts about going here in fear that the food and service would be subpar. However this was NOT the case as the wait staff and food was wonderful. I'm a 52 year old professional who's eaten thousands of Thai meals at various restaurants through metropolitan Detroit and I'm going to make a lofty claim. "Best Thai food ever!" My wife had chicken fried rice and I opted for the Chicken Pad Thai. It was so freaking delicious that just thinking about it makes me want to go back right now. Heat Warning - Heed this advice! Both me and my wife order our Thai food either medium-plus or hot depending on the place. Here, the waitress strongly cautioned us against this saying it would be too hot. My pride wanted to disregard her warning but we gave in and opted for Mild-plus, and when the food came, we were thankful for her words of caution. HOT, damn hot! Definitely at the "hot" level served at other local Thai kitchens. I'm not sure they understand the definition of "mild", because this food was anything but that. Being that we enjoy a standard hot-level spice we were okay, but please listen to your server or you'll be unable to eat your food. The only reason for deducing a star is because the place needs a good cleaning. The eating area is fine but the front and rear entrances are filthy and I don't think the walls or doors have been wiped down in years. Consider bringing some hand sanitizer if this bothers you. read more

Second time here so I thought it worthy of a review. These people are very attentive and the service was great. The spice levels quoted are definitely more on the original Thai side so be warned. We like hot so we were very pleased. The Basil fried rice and the pad Thai curry were our favorites. For Thai food in SE Michigan, this place rates pretty high! read more

This place used to be soooo good. But, seems over the past few years that they are on the decline. I do love they they finally corrected their spice level over the previous owners. But, they are starting to skimp on the curry sauce that used to be prevalent in their Pad Thai Curry. Now, it seems very dry. Also, it would be nice if they had Pha Nang on the menu!! read more

Unfortunately this type food restaurant used to be one of the best around until the new owners took over as the worst thing is there's spice chart is so sporadic sometimes a medium doesn't even appear to be hot other times you cannot even eat it I do not believe that the new owners care about customer satisfaction and more about money the quality of all their meats and their vegetables have gone downhill drastically all to probably save a few nickels I would not recommend this place unless you are in a pinch for Thai food Thai food in Brighton is 10 times better!! Ordered the spicy drunken noodles and green curry chicken during stay at home orders version 2.0. Highly recommend the drunken noodles! Try Thai Cafe in Downtown Howell. The food here is excellent! I thought the spring rolls were great with the plum sauce. The Pad Thai Curry is great! I ordered it with chicken. Start with mild heat for that dish as there is already heat to it, and go from there. The carry out containers can keep your food HOT for up to an hour, so when I hear people asking or pestering staff about it, I want to roll my eyes. They could also be short staffed during this time, which should be understandable. 5 stars because the food is authentic and great. Will be back!! read more

The food from Thai Cafe is outstanding. We are regulars there ordering at least once a week. The tom yum soup with chicken and crab ragoons are flavorful and delicious. The spring rolls are crispy and flaky with just the perfect balance of shrimp and other ingredients. I always get the Gang Gai Chicken which comes in a coconut curry sauce, absolutely delicious. There is something important to know, they have 4 different spice levels: no spice, mild, medium and hot. I'm usually one to enjoy hot and spicy but the mild is just about perfect for me. I got the medium once and it was much too hot for me. Great family owned business and yummy food. Definitely a must try. read more

Thy have a option where you can order your protein vegetable and sauce the way you want it Also be aware they use real hot peppers. Crab ragoons had zero crab in them. All cream cheese. Pork egg rolls were good. Mild is the equivalent of medium plus at any normal Thai restaurant. Main dish, Three's company, was good. Lost a star for charging to share a meal (wtf is that?!?). read more

I'm very disappointed. I'm wondering if there has been a change in ownership. I asked 2 separate people there and neither knew. I used to get take out there all the time around 2015 (when I lived close) and everything I ordered was delicious and large portions. This time I ordered the house Special Noodles. Ugh. I wanted to like this place. I ordered the Pad Thai and a spring roll. The spring roll seemed almost over cooked or perhaps it was old fryer oil. The pad thai was different than any I have ever eaten and not in a great way. The noodles were sitting in liquid and the taste and look was different. I have eaten Thai food all over the country and pad thai is something that is usually reliable and consistent (not to mention fresh) so I am not sure why it is so different at this restaurant. Don't let the exterior fool you. The food here is amazing and the different levels of spicy are pretty spot on! I like a comfortable heat with my crazy noodles and pad Thai and they definitely did not disappoint! I was so excited to find a good, reliable carry out for a night that we don't feel like cooking.
