I feel bad, leaving a negative review for such small business. But I think locals need a fair warning about this place. I ordered a larb salad($16), salad rolls($9) and two Thai iced teas($10). My total is $35. The salad was 50% white onions. The salad rolls were tiny and made with super cheap shrimp. The iced tea was served in a waxy blue paper like cup. Everything from the time you walk in the door till you walk out, the door is as cheap as they come. Pros: the Thai iced tea was delicious. The tiny $16 larb salad had good flavor. And the peanut sauce was good. We eat Thai food all the time and this is the first time I gave this place to try. This is definitely the worst Thai food in Oregon city, with the smallest portions I've ever seen. When did this change happen? They used to be legit. Worst Thai food I've ever been served. Tom Kha came without shrimp, clearly heard the microwave beep before being reserved flavorless shrimp. Bland. Massaman curry was bland and the steak was rancid. Fresh, authentic, delicious! I went here years ago and didn't enjoy it, went there on a whim because the place I normally prefer is down near Clackamette park. They've been getting it right ever since! In fact, my husband always gets some sort of spicy basil fried rice and said this one is his fave by far! Damn good pad thai, salad rolls, peanut sauce, etc. My only gripe is that the potstickers were small and over priced and THATS IT. I really wanted this to be a great place. Food: meh. I just got chicken pad Thai & salad rolls. The pad Thai was ok-ish. Had a bit of a smokey flavor that was weird & the sauce tasted a little too much like ketchup. The salad rolls were good. Not incredible but good. Not quite enough peanut sauce but they gave me more in my to-go bag. I started to get the gtf out vibe about a quarter to 9 (when they close). I had asked when they close when I came in at 8. The food didn't come out very fast; I think I got it about 8:30. I was asked to leave with 8 minutes to 9. That was a little much for me. They were "nice" about it but damn, 20 mins to eat. Staff was out the door & in their cars at 9p on the dot (I was in my car answering a text). The ambiance- like any Thai place in an old strip mall in Oregon. We've been coming here for years and they have never disappointed. For a little "hole in the wall" place, the food is excellent and the staff is always so friendly. Sometimes we will find an extra cookie or biscuit added to our to go order. I have them on speed dial and go here when I have the craving for some good Thai food. read more

We went back and my adventuresome nature bit me in the ass. I tried the BBQ Chicken and even asked for medium spicy. Sadly it was pretty bland, no evidence of the special Thai marinade or sauce. The rest of my party chose much better, also from the specials menu. We started with the ground chicken lettuce wraps as a shared app. The flavors were absolutely incredible. The right blend of spice, heat. The perfect consistency. The wife had the shrimp with asperagus. It was prepared with an amazing garlic sauce and served with vegetables. The girl child had red curry noodles with chicken. She was kind enough to share dive of that with me. It was the flavor, the heat and the incredible noodles that came together in perfect harmony. Service was prompt, friendly. The place is comfortable and clean. Prices went too bad although we did end up at $20/head with the single appetizer and no drinks. I will go back. I will get the curry. Tonight I had the best Pad Thai I have ever had. Do not be put off by the modesty of the location. It is clean, organized, easy to access off Molalla Drive and wonderful. I really wanted to give this spot a chance with it being family owned and a quaint little spot near home. BUT the food is not quality. Lots of obvious short cuts. I'm almost certain that the "Thai BBQ chicken" was Costco's rotisserie chicken with sauce and veggies poured over it. The drunken noodles barely had noodles in it and the curry was extremely watered down. Don't cheat your customers. Make quality food and raise prices as needed to operate. The last few times I've gone in they've skimped on the protein be it chicken or Shrimp. The portions seem quite a bit smaller. I understand the raise in food costs and am willing to pay for good food but not at the expense of them cutting portions back and not putting in but half the chicken or Seafood in dishes that I order. So hopefully they read this advice and pay attention to the quality and seem or they will lose more regular customers. read more

I only gave them 4 stars because I was so used to most of the Thai restaurants' big servings, Thai Chef's servings was a bit small. (Or maybe I'm just whiny) I ordered Pad Kee Mao Combination meat and you can choose up to 3 meat. The shrimp was a bit over cooked but wasn't that bad. Building looks like it might be condemned at any moment. The space is limtied. It is not easy to find. However the food here is solidly some of the best Thai I have found yet. Best Friend and I were having a short guys evening out and decided to try a new place for both of us. A quick trip through Yelpdom yielded us this little nugget, Thai Chef. We walked in to see two other tables in use and the food on those tables looked pretty darn inviting. We started with a pork spring roll appetizer which had a wonderful flavor, kind of savory and a little salty. From there best friend had the Drunken Noodles on the hot side and I decided to have the Pad Thai on the mild side. The service was nice and quick, very friendly and best of all she didn't hover. Sometimes in smallish places the wait staff can be a little... close. Respect my personal space people! I have to say that the Pad Thai had a wonderful flavor, lots of peanut and bean sprouts, maybe a little heavy on the cabbage but it was easily pushed off to the side. Best friend hoovered the Drunken Noodles so I am assuming they were pretty good as well. Yup, I'm enjoying my Thai kick I am on right now and I hope the ride doesn't end too soon. Thai Chef restaurant is really a hidden gem on the "Top of the Hill" in Oregon City. In fact, residents of Oregon City just know this place as, "The Thai restaurant is conveniently located so that you'll always see a mix of college students, government workers, and police office (OCPD is right around the corner). What they all have in common is that the great food makes anyone who here once become a fan. They are like the Dutch Bros of Thai food in Clackamas County. I usually have the Pad Kee Mao and the salad rolls. The curries are fantastic as well. The décor of the restaurant adds to the ambiance. This isn't a high-end 5-star Chart House experience, but it is authentically Thai and I always feel like I've eaten good food, prepared by good people. This is a small restaurant, hole in the wall, but well worth the effort to seek out and dine. Thai chef was recommended to us by a local associate at a business and since we do like Thai food we decided to try it out for an early dinner. I ordered the number 30 which was my choice of meat, chicken, and vegetable with peanut sauce. My dining companion ordered the drunken noodles, an favorite of hers. As an appetizer we tried the shrimp fresh salad rolls which is also a favorite of ours that other Thai restaurants. The appetizer was excellent, very fresh and they were quite large shrimp salad rolls, highly recommended. My dining companions said the drunken noodles were excellent. I didn't try a small bite and it did taste good but honestly was too spicy for my taste. My chicken and vegetable in peanut sauce was excellent. I was a little surprised that they used white meat and was a little concerned it might be dry, but it turned out not to be dry at all. We were both impressed with the freshness the food placed in front of us as well as the crispness of the cooked vegetables done just right. Everything must be cooked when ordered. Service was friendly, helpful and quick. There was a fair amount foot traffic in and out, so obviously the locals know how wonderful this restaurant is. Thai chef has the advantage of being the only Thai place on top of the hill. They are able to hold crazy hours because of it. It's a known fact that if you are ordering take out it will take less time if you go and order takeout rather than call. Common theme: they have to see your face. I went in yesterday to get some soup and chicken and found out that they raised their prices! They are different than what is represented online so I was surprised when my total came to $20 for a soup and an appetizer. No more Thai chef for me. Totally perplexed by some of the negative reviews on here. We go to Thai Chef more than I'd like to admit - let's say we've been here dozens of times. The food is always delicious, service is prompt, and staff is friendly. In fact, we just moved out to this area from North Portland about a year ago and we feel that this restaurant is FAR better than any of the restaurants we had up there - and we've been to Thailand, so we know good Thai food! We ordered take out from this restaurant and we're very disappointed. I ordered the fried rice and friends of mine ordered pad Thai and curry items. We all had the same complaint, and that was that there was an odd flavor in all of our meals...I'm assuming they are using some sort of an oil maybe which just doesn't taste very good..I'm not really sure. The facility didn't seem overly clean when we entered to pick up our food either, but I can't judge them on that a whole lot because we didn't spend much time there. I wouldn't recommend. read more

This was our favorite Thai place in Oregon city and would go there regularly until tonight. We went in and sat down for dinner and their was only 1 other person in there eating, after about 10 minutes of waiting to place our order we finally ordered our food and then proceeded to wait for another 35-40 minutes for our food to be served. Meanwhile the crab puffs (an appetizer) was sitting at the front counter until we asked for them because we had already been waiting an we're hungry. I can be stubborn. Despite the fact that many of my friends who work in Oregon City have told me to check this place out, I've driven by it for the longest time with hardly a glance. Maybe I was put off by the overly humble storefront where Thai Chef makes its home, stuck between a Subway and a meat emporium. But of course the notorious "hole in the wall" is where you're going to find the next amazing meal, right? Word was that their Pad Thai is the bomb so I decided to start there. The lunch special Pad Thai costs just $6.95 although there is an extra charge for to-go. If I hadn't already decided to head back to the office I might have stuck around as the place was quiet, the hosts were very pleasant and the complimentary stack of Asian Reporter newspapers made for interesting reading. The Pad Thai was delicious as promised, not too huge a portion and also not greasy or overly salty. The chicken in particular was grilled and not just sauteed, which gave it more flavor and texture than one might expect. I wanted a few more bean sprouts but that didn't slow me from hoovering up the whole entree. I'm going back to check out the Massaman Curry next time around and that won't be long. read more

And after testing a lot of Thai food, this is definitely a safe bet, especially for Oregon City. Portland has more options of course. The Masamun was delicious, and I've had it a lot of places, so I'm not sure what the other reviewer was mentioning... It didn't taste or look anything like tomato soup... It tasted like it should... The Tom Yum soup was actually good, and it's hard to find a decent tom yum soup, since my favorite Eagle Thai closed =( The green curry was also good. They have $6.95 lunch specials that you can call in and expect to be ready when you arrive from work, and should provide enough to give you lunch the next day too.
