First off, I want to start by saying that the food here is the best Thai food in Iowa City. Chef is incredible, the store itself is adorable, and I would recommend to anyone looking for great food at a good price. However, the last time I bought from here, I had a bit of a strange experience. I was picking up a to go order at night and nobody was in the lobby except for the young employees and a woman who I assume was the manager. The employees looked extremely distressed, maybe even crying, in that way that didn't make sense for the situation. While food was great and I'll be back again, I'm curious how well management is handling things behind closed doors. read more

This place always hits the mark! We visit friends in Iowa City every year and Thai Spice is always on our plan for one evening. It is a very unassuming restaurant, tucked away in a small strip mall. The interior is modestly decorated with about 15 tables throughout. They also have a room near the back that looks to seat about 10 people. What's terrific about Thai Spice, is the food! We have yet to order an item that didn't thrill. None of our most recent items lasted long enough for a photo (sorry). However, we've enjoyed the Drunken Noodles, Pad Bai Ka Prao, Pad Thai, Pad See-iew, fried rice with pineapple, chicken satay and egg rolls. All were fantastic. Always let your server know how spicy you want your food and they happily accommodate. The spice level is very true to what you ask for, so remember, if you order 'thai spicy' - be prepared for some real heat! If you're craving Thai food in Iowa City, this is your spot. I was visiting Iowa for a week and my friend recommended this place as the best thai place in town. Great recommendation I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. My server, alex was very attentive and gave great recommendations for new things to try while dealing with my numerous questions. He recommended the pad bai ka prao which was a 10/10 the plate was clear in 10 minutes. The chicken satay was also very good especially with the different sauces. I loveee the dressing on the small salad it had alot of flavor. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is the panang curry. That is my go-to thai dish and it was good but it wasnt anything special which was a bit disappointing. That being said the overall experience was amazing would definitely go again to try some more dishes! read more

My husband and I tried this restaurant for the first time but definitely we will come back again (countless time! Lol). I decided to pick this restaurant for our regular lunch date, since we been passing through this restaurants area multiples time and would like to give a try. Does not look much from outside but the interior will welcome you as if you are in Thailand, many ornaments, clean and vibrant color. It was only one server for entire time. Our foods came pretty fast. I ordered beef tom yum since I used to eat this food when I was in my home country, just to set up my expectation bar from this restaurant. But it turned out amazing! As delicious as my expectation. They gave very generous spices which make the soup amazing (galangal, kefir leaves and lemon grass). The foods are fresh and chickens roll are delicious. Spice level 3 is perfect for us. But should go way lower if we bring kids with us next time. Not mentioned the salad which I assumed they use kewpie mayonnaise, that bring memories when I was living in Japan, such a nice flavor! My husband was also happy with his order, which is fried rice with beef. We also ordered rice and duck (forgot exactly the name) to go. On top of that we, surprised that they do not have pork on their menu list! Since we moved to this city, so far we are not happy with many "fancy and famous" restaurants that people referred to online. Either they are overprice or low food quality. Visited tonight for dinner after rave reviews from multiple people. We were promptly seated, given waters, and our order taken. There were 6 other people in the dining area when we were seated. Our appetizer was served within minutes, but we then waited nearly 50 minutes for our entrees. In the 50 minutes we waited, another handful of patrons were seated and served their meals. Some finished their meals while we continued to wait. Countless take out orders were packaged and picked up. After being in the restaurant for an hour without our entrees, we asked for them to be packed to go. In the meanwhile, our check was delivered and card ran for $50+ - we were told it would be another few minutes for our food. I inquired with the lovely wait staff if this was typical - I was assured it was not. The wait staff worked hard the entire time and are the sole asset to this restaurant. We finally received our entrees packed to go and left hangry 70 minutes after we arrived. We got home and were disappointed with the food which was underwhelming in flavor despite being large in size. Safe to say we won't be back, or recommending this place to anyone. read more

Out of the eight or more times my boyfriend and I have order food from Thai Spice every single time the food has been delicious. My favorite is their Pad Thai. The Fried Rice with Pineapple and the Pad See-iew are both just as good if not better. I probably could eat at this place once a week. Even though I might spend a little more than I would like to on a dinner it really isn't that expensive and I am never disappointed. Plus I always have leftovers the next day. I had some pad thai from here today, which was quite pleasant. It was appropriately tangy, but was missing the pressed tofu and shrimps that I am used to (in my experience pad thai has both chicken and shrimp, not just chicken.) It was also light on egg and peanut. But the sauce was appropriate! And came with lime wedges for extra tang! Takeout was intelligently packaged in a Styrofoam container lined with aluminum. Between the four of us in our party, we tested out a wide array of flavors including the Pad Thai with beef, Pa-Nang (red curry) with chicken, Kai tod Kra-tiam prik tai (yellow curry) with beef, and Tom yum kung with shrimp. The curry dishes were outstanding. The Pa-nang can pack a punch not only in heat (choose your heat level wisely), but in well-rounded, full-bodied spices. It was delicious to the last drop and paired nicely with the iced mango smoothie. The Kai tod Kra-tiam prik tai was my second favorite dish, making my mouth feel like it was taking in all of the delicious flavors of the aromas you find in asian spice markets. No need to wreck the flow, especially since the place is so solid. And before I forget, they have a DELICIOUS salad dressing that they put on their salads and bottle up for sale! So there's two locations of this restaurant - The one on Gilbert, close to downtown Iowa City is my runner up - Gilbert and Mormon Trek. The place itself is nothing to write home about. Bathroom if I remember correctly is ok. Service is decent. Pretty extensive menu, with all the traditional choices and some. Decent prices & portion size. Overall solid place. Pretty good Chicken Pad Thai. The place was clean and they are now seating people inside. The reason for 4 stars was I had to wait 42 minutes for my food. Now, I am well aware that there was a lot of take-out going on, but perhaps you either would A: press my order ahead a bit because they knew I was dine in or B: the server could have approached me around the 15-20 minute mark and communicated with me why the wait was taking place and it would be about 25 more minutes!! Also, I might not have thought too much about it if the folks that came in after me hadn't have gotten their meal in less than 15 of ordering. It just would have gone a long way to me had the server said something and maybe allowed me to adjust my life around waiting for this food. Honestly won't go back, but I am glad I tried it! Absolutely love this place! I have looked all over to find a better Chicken Pad Thai (it is BY far my favorite Thai dish), but have never had a better one than the one at Thai Spice. While, the Pad Thai is absolutely incredible, the Green Curry is also awesome. I myself am not much of a curry spice fan, but I have learned to love spice in just the right amount after being so afraid to try it in my younger years. I have been to this amazing restaurant ever since I was 8 years old, and it has never disappointed. We came from Seattle where the Thai was abundant and were very excited to find this place. As mentioned elsewhere, we haven't found a reason to do much more exploring. The place is located off Gilbert St. in what I thought was a converted warehouse, but within was a symphony of flavor that has since become a favorite spot! We've found the ambiance to be great for an evening where we've got a little more time to sit and chat. The selection is ample and ranges from the familiar to the "that's an interesting sounding dish". The pad Thai is excellent, especially with a little extra egg! The portions are very large and the flavors excellent! Our other go to has become the Pad see-iew - it's fantastic. The noodles, we found out, are delivered from Chicago and made fresh every few days. They're delightful! The highlight of each visit however is the Tom kha kai (coconut soup). Straight up, the Trix rabbit would give it up for this action if he ever had the pleasure of tasting it. The creaminess of the coconut milk meshes with galangal (a ginger relative we've found) and is something you'll consider bathing in after trying. Additionally, the prices are very reasonable and there is always enough for lunch the next day! This very quickly became our Thai spot in Iowa City and is a spot we've starting bringing friends to when they're in the mood for something a little different from what's normally available in the area. read more

Coming from the west coast where Thai food is a very competitive market, I thought I was going to have to moderate my expectations here in the midwest. I'm happy to say that I was wrong - the food was very tasty. My relatives have yet to develop a taste for curry but they do like spicey. Iowa city does not have many good options for Thai food compared to average college town. Thai spice is certainly is off the campus a slightly better compared to typical on campus cheap food places. Ambiance is nice and spacious, does not give you a feeling of eating at a typical ethnic place. The server had a very good knowledge of the menu and she was able to help out with selection. They don't have spice level selection which makes it easier for patrons. I had tofu dish with cashews and basil and it was delicious. The portion sizes are good for one person. We also had some very spicy beef salad which was nice. This place certainly nice for someone looking for a slightly upscale Thai food in Iowa City. read more

Four happy diners! Had early dinner on Saturday night. Waitress was efficient, the place was pleasant and about half full. I loved #35, sliver noodles, egg, shrimp, scallions baked in a clay pot. Very tasty and light. Ordering delivery from Thai Spice was incredibly easy. To start, I ordered the 6 dim sum shrimp. They had great flavor and were the perfect size for an appetizer. For my main meal I went with the beef pad thai. My lord, was I underestimating how much food that would be. My to go box was jam packed with noodles, wonderfully cooked beef, and assorted veggies. It took me three days to eat every last bit, and yet I enjoyed eating all of it even after reheating. I cannot wait to branch out and try one of their many other options the next time I crave thai food. read more
