Sushiya continues to impress--easily one of my go-to spots in Iowa City for authentic Asian comfort and standout sushi. We tried their snow-aged sake this time (yes, aged in snow for three years!) and it was incredible--smooth, clean, and unlike anything else you'll find around here. As always, the sashimi was fresh, beautifully plated, and melt-in-your-mouth good. We mentioned we were celebrating a special event, and they surprised us with the cutest orange "bear" fruit carving. It's that kind of thoughtful, personal touch that makes this place unforgettable. I can never resist their Taiwanese popcorn chicken--crispy, tender, and packed with flavor--and the Three Cup Chicken tasted incredibly authentic. You can really tell this place is run by owners who care about getting it right, both in taste and presentation. Sushiya serves up some great sushi, especially for Iowa and the Midwest. I only visit this area when I'm seeing my best friend, and she usually takes me to Red Ginger--which I find subpar and overpriced for what you get. Sushiya, on the other hand, is the go-to spot. The flavors here are superior in every way. The seating inside is limited, but you can watch the sushi chefs working on the line, which is fun to see. It's clear they handle a lot of online orders because they were constantly busy. There's also a kitchen in the back for cooked dishes, though it's not visible from the dining area. Everything we tried was delicious, and I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. I especially enjoyed the lunch portion of the Katsu Don--it had a lot of onions, but I didn't mind. I did ask for extra spicy mayo for my two deep-fried sushi rolls, as they were a bit bland on their own. The spicy mayo seemed house-made, with far more spices than I've seen at other sushi restaurants, and it was genuinely spicy, which was a nice surprise. The restaurant itself was quiet, aside from my best friend's child having a little meltdown at the end of the meal when his food wasn't coming fast enough. Not a bad little place. We sat outside, which I didn't even know they had outdoor seating, so that was a nice surprise. And it was a cute little area. Our server was super nice. We should have trusted our noses. Upon entering the restaurant we were hit with a strong (not fresh) seafood odor. Brusquely we were ordered to follow the hostess to a table. Stupidly we sat down. Now the wait... After finally asking to be served after many minutes of being ignored the server arrived. We ordered our lunch. The miso soup had a strong chlorine flavor. Clearly made with bad tap water. The tempura shrimp were not fresh tasting. If you like old seafood tempura maybe it was acceptable. The general tso chicken was so tough my wife could barely eat it without looking like she was in a tug of war competition. My yakisoba was overly sweet and frankly not very good. We were driving from Des Moines to Coralville, and wanted to find a good restaurant in the area. Yelp soon turned up Sushiya in North Liberty, and we're delighted to confirm others' glowing reviews. Spouse had a plum wine, I had green tea. We each had a seaweed Sunomono salad (mine with octopus; spouse's with shrimp), and then split a Futomaki (large, 10 piece vegetarian roll), a Tonkatsu (panko-crusted pork cutlet), Negihama Maki (smaller yellowtail / scallion roll), and for desert, an order of Tamago. The appetisers, sushi and Tonkatsu were produced very quickly, and were among the best we've ever had (and our sushi repertoire includes Tokyo, Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka, as well as many cities in the U.S. and Europe). The flavor of the Sunomono fluid was really delightful. A hint of smoke, and a mild snap. The cucumber in the Sunomono was cut into matchstick shapes, great for picking up the flavor, and was nice and crisp. The pickled ginger was also excellent. Avery was our server. She was incredibly attentive, informative, and pleasant, but not at all intrusive. She mentioned that others had inquired about ramen (they don't have any on the menu, but do have plenty of udon, soba, and tempura dishes on the menu), but we weren't there for ramen. Our dinner, very filling, was $66 after tax. We were happy to tip for the wonderful food and service. We're in the Iowa City area for a conference (we're a day early), and will be delighted to bring colleagues later in the week. read more

Man, North Liberty has really come a long way from the days when it was just a few pizza and BBQ joints, and even more places to buy live bait for fishing nearby. Sushiya is a fine addition to their dining scene. We came here for dinner on a Friday evening, and the place was rather busy so we had a short wait to get seated. There's a sign on the tables indicating that there is a time limit when the restaurant is busy, and while it seems like a bit of a rude thing to impose, the time limit is actually pretty generous and allows for a leisurely meal (assuming that the kitchen doesn't take an inordinate amount of time preparing the food). The atmosphere is casual and the furnishings are basic - this is not an elegant Japanese restaurant by any stretch. There's some tables inside and on their back patio, which overlooks a fake pond and would have been our choice of location if it weren't so cool and windy when we arrived. There's a TV behind the sushi bar, which I'm not a fan of because it is a bit of a distraction. On our table that evening were: Takoyaki - diced octopus in a deep-fried dough. This was very good with big pieces of octopus. I think they overdid it with the sauce, it was a still a tasty start to the meal. Futo maki - pretty standard big vegetarian roll. Very familiar, nothing distinctive about it. Spider roll - deep fried softshell crab roll. The crab was cooked properly - not too dry. Well-executed overall. Spicy tuna roll - very good, but IMO could stand to be a little spicier. Decent amount of tuna inside. Negihama (hamachi) maki - a little disappointing. The amount of fish was meager and the flavor was lacking (probably because of the small quantity of hamachi). Chicken and vegetarian yakisoba - fairly typical; again, nothing particularly special about it. There was a decent amount of meat in the chicken dish, and overall the portions were quite generous. The cost of the meal was very reasonable - less than I'm used to paying back home in California, for certain. Service was friendly and the pace of the meal was relaxed, and we finished well within our allotted two-hour window. read more

When you are craving both sushi and pad Thai, Sushiya is here with both! Sushiya not only offers a wide selection of sushi but several entree options like pad Thai and noodles as well. It had been awhile since I had sushi, and I recently saw several reviews noting Sushiya's crab rangoon as the best. So, I definitely had to add that to my order. It's delicious and also reheats well, which isn't usually the case with crab rangoon. I also ordered the Spicy Salmon Crunch Roll and Chicken Pad Thai. Both were wonderful, and the pad Thai was a huge portion! It's a must if you are looking for leftovers. Sushiya also has a great outdoor area near the pond, so it's a perfect dinner venue in the summer. read more

Sushiya is amazing! We've looked everywhere for good sushi and we come from the coast, so for us to give this place a 5 star is a big deal. While it's a super small restaurant, the service is absolutely amazing and everyone is very attentive. The menu is vast and there's even different oriental teas and sakes. They always go above and beyond on presentation as well. Everything is very reasonably priced and if we're getting sushi, we don't even think about going anywhere else. read more

This is the sister restaurant to Sushi House Family Restaurant in Cedar Rapids... which has been a local favorite for the past two decades or so. It is pretty mind blowing that this NL gem lives in what used to be a Quiznos? It does not, I repeat DOES NOT at all give sandwich slinging vibes. You walk in and it is minimal but charming with booths and sushi chefs front and center, doing their thang. We came in on a Wednesday, to celebrate a birthday. We ordered a handful of sushi (shrimp tempura, rainbow roll, yellowtail, spicy salmon and spicy crunch tuna), vegetable rolls, crab rangoons, edamame and a chicken teriyaki dish. Of course some sparkling sake and Sapporo, too. Pricing was on point, staff was knowledgable, service was fast and overall it was a stellar, tasty outing. There is plenty of parking, it is conveniently located just off Penn Street. When we left, the place was full! So be warned, it is a local favorite and with it being such a small spot-- plan accordingly. I am ashamed to say it took me darn near eight years to get to this spot. It serves up the best sushi in NL, perhaps even the area-- stop in today! read more

How is it possible for a small place in IA to have this incredible sushi? Food: Excellent, presentation excellent, fresh great tasting fish. Even the jasmine tea was great. I could go on and on, but seems they go out of their way to put out great food. Had the spicy scallop nigiri, which I have ordered many times trying to recreate the magic of Irori (Marina Del Rey), these guys have come the closest. Service: Excellent job by the waitress on our tea refill, as well as checking on us during the meal. Overall: I love this place. Love at first taste! After a recent major disappointment in KS, I was floored to have a 180 experience here. Everything was so good, we considered coming back the following night for dinner again. (Repost from my FB Review) I haven't been to Sushiya since the Derecho and throughout the pandemic but it has always been my favorite Sushi place and the best in the corridor area/lowa. EVERYTHING from Sushi chefs (MJ and Ray) trained by Vincent, front of house and kitchen staff still provide the highest quality and service. Vincent was able to adapt and thrive through these harsh times and I'm very glad Sushiya is still here to stay. Looking forward to my next visit for some Omakase! I highly recommend sitting at the bar or their dog friendly patio! There's also a small lake in the back you can take on walk on. read more

One of the best chinese and sushi in this area! Every time we have Sushiya it is fresh, perfectly prepared and delicious. This last order included crab rangoon, egg rolls, chicken fried rice and General Tao's chicken. The Crab Rangoon has a sweeter base, but was perfectly fried. The General Tao's was fresh and crispy. They have the extra special rolls with lots of ingredients that are great but what I really enjoy is that the more basic rolls are great quality and a good price! Everyone is always very friendly. From sushi to some of the other entrees, this is one of the best in the area. The Generals chicken is the best, not sickly sweet but a good more like umami flavor, there is a micro thin shell finish on the chicken and it's really good. The Singapore Noodles are out of this world. Delightfully spicy with that curry flavoring but Not so much that the feint of heart can't take it. Noodles really thin makes maximum surface to soak up the flavors. This is a regular return place for us. read more

I got the sashimi & sushi dinner, which is a fantastic deal for $19.50 as it includes miso soup, salad, a roll, 7 pieces of sashimi, 4 pieces of the nigiri, and ice cream. I got the Alaska roll which was interesting since it had both salmon and crabstick in it, but was quite tasty. All of the sashimi/nigiri were very fresh, with the exception of the tuna which was just okay (seemed like frozen and then thawed). The presentation was also beautiful and service was excellent. Small on the inside, but they make some fabulous sushi! We were seated across from the chefs making the sushi - helped pass the time waiting for our own rolls. It's amazing how many rolls they were making so quickly! Obviously this place is popular for takeout as the takeout orders were piling up! Our service was great - the waitress checked on us frequently and apologized for the long wait. We started with dumpling (scrumptious!) and then had the orange roll, spicy tuna, and the rainbow roll. I have had way better. The beer was really good (too expensive for a beer $21). It was a fancy bottle, that's it. We also tried their hot sake with bud and created our own sake bombs. Which was good. But I didn't get happy high. I think my capacity has increased or the sake was super diluted. Then I ordered Taiwanese crispy chicken and then tempura chicken. Felt like all similar taste. my wife and others ordered stirred fried tofu with veggies and some yaki soba or something everything was below average.
