When you pull up to this house, there is a neighborhood that is built around it. Everything preserved though that is on the property, so no need to worry. Sadly, it was raining when we went, but we still were able to have a great experience. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went quite in depth for each part of the house. I think the tour was about an hour or so. These types of houses are very interesting because while you are being told about how the room was built, how it was used or something else related to Frank or the house, you can truly picture yourself as a member of the family that lived in the house. It was unexpected that I had a phenomenal private tour of the lighthouse by the Lighthouse Keeper…read more The keeper was personable, passionate about her work, friendly, and patience with all the questions I had. We started the tour with an explanation of the lightbulbs; usage, changes, etc. Then we talked about the different Lighthouse Keepers - their histories and experiences. We then visited different houses to see how life was to be a Lighthouse Keeper. I enjoyed the Lighthouse Keeper's house the best. I was able to touch things, see old appliances and got to see all the rooms in the house. Lastly, it was the tour of the lighthouse. I wasn't going to walk the narrow spiral staircase but the Keeper insisted that I can take my time walking (I use a cane to walk) up. When we reached the top, fog was rolling in. However, I still had beautiful views. I was able to walk around the top and the walk gave me a sense what life was like for the Lighthouse Keeper. This is an experience I won't forget to actually be at the top of the lighthouse.

I was excited to see it as I'm a fan of comic books and wrote both my M.A. thesis and PhD dissertation about comic book history. It's a private residence, so we only read the signage and took some photos near the signs, but the owners clearly enjoy their historical legacy and care for it well. They have Superman statues visible in their garden and cardboard cutouts of Superman in the upstairs windows. Just know that it's a one-way street and be respectful if you want to read the signage.

It history and beauty makes it so much more than "office building". We lucked out and found street parking but would have paid for a garage. It is absolutely worth stepping inside to look around. As a novice of woodworking, I was blown-away by the intricate woodwork and finishings throughout the home. The three ladies that lead our tour of the home shared many interesting details about the property, its restoration, and details of Clara and Henry's years at the estate. Many of the restoration stories, like finding a tub for Henry's bathroom or how Clara had a section repainted white were intriguing. Even though much of the home, especially the second floor, is still being restored it was a fascinating experience.

The signage was bilingual-in English and Arabic-and what appeared to be a Yemeni wedding seemed to be taking place. The juxtaposition of the estate of an industrialist (or robber baron, or visionary, or racist, depending on your point of view) with a distinctive immigrant community makes for a striking reflection on Americana. The grounds include some gardens, and a lake with a path around it. Access to the river is limited, but it didn't look like that impressive of a river. The greenery is more worthwhile.
