I visited for a private function and loved everything about it. It is a cute quaint place for conversation, dancing or just to hangout. Because it was set up for the private event I didn't get many pictures of the venue. I did get one of the bar ;). I had an old fashion cocktail, it was very good. I have waited to write a review, as I I wanted to give this spot another chance and visit again. Now I have been here two times, on different days of the week/end, and both experiences were underwhelming. The space itself is unique and fun to get to, as you walk through the alley and have to give a password for entrance, but the seating was quite uncomfortable and lacked the ability to maneuver your chair to be able to hear the person(s) you are with, and makes it difficult to share conversations over a cocktail. We would have loved to sit at the bar, but were told that they only seat singles there, and never parties of two (bummer!). I have tried a few different cocktails on their menu and nothing has wowed me... there are other speakeasy spots in the city with similar pricing, and in my opinion, much better drinks with a more inviting atmosphere. In response to Kim: yes, I agree being solo at a speakeasy would be lonely, if seated at a table by yourself in the back. I was not criticizing that aspect, just sharing that it would be nice, if there were multiple empty seats, to allow a two-some to sit at the bar... if space allowed (on one visit it most definitely did). If you're planning an intimate gathering with an Art Deco vibe (think Harlem Nights or Great Gatsby), do yourself a favor and book the Thaxton immediately. We visited a couple of locations and they did not compare to the Thaxton. Art Deco artwork, photography, wood and ceramic trim abound. You could literally spend all day taking in the beauty of the Thaxton. Very little additional decor or florals are needed to bring your vision to life. The owner Kim is an absolute joy to work with. No question was a stupid one and she graciously walked me through the layout and how the day would progress. She serves as coordinator/host for your event and was always a step ahead of me to determine what I forgot or possibly needed. The entire event space (including the lower level Speakeasy and Mezzanine) are yours for the four hours. The nostalgic elevator is hand operated and Kim did that too. Many of our guests had never heard of the Thaxton and marveled at the vintage decor, The day of our event, the Cardinals were also in town. To avoid parking issues, I sprang for valet parking (companies offering valet services are noted as vendors on the Thaxtons' website). We loved everything about the Thaxton. We had a blast! I was not sure about this, but my better half had heard about it and wanted to go for our anniversary. It was raining the night we went, parked a block away and went down the alley. It's a legit alley, flooded with rain and dumpsters. Coming to the door, we pushed the button, and we're "greeted" by the doorman, who played his part perfectly. After giving the password, we were let in and soon led downstairs to answering area. Very cool atmosphere, no rush, not blaring music. Clearly meant to sit and relax. We loved the decor of the place. We tried a couple of drinks and our server was great! After closing the tab, it's back upstairs. The doorman let me know to hit the door hard to open it, and I startled the 2 couples standing outside. I looked at the doorman and asked if they were allowed in, to which he said, "no, close that behind you and have a great night." Whether it's a girls night out, date night, or just you wanting to grab some drinks this is the place you MUST try next! Came in on date night for a night out and this place did NOT disappoint! Dress to impress or dress causally- there is no dress requirements although I love how dressed up the door person was. My favorite part was saying the password of the night! (Make sure you look at their Instagram page before coming to the door that is accessed through the alley). Upon arriving you are accompanied by the door person and led down a few flights of stairs and are led to a dim lit lounge area- we came in around 11:30pm on the weekend and Ordered a few drinks before their last call (we ordered the drinks at the bar and then a server came by to hand deliver the drinks to our placement). My overall favorite drink was the "Razzmatazz" it was SENSATIONAL! Don't let the yogurt throw you off like it did for me! It's such a picturesque drink and the floral decoration did it for me! (We also ordered the "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" which was also PHENOMENAL it is not pictured because I finished it before I could get a picture - but it was garnished beautifully with scorched rosemary) The ambiance was very laid back and the music was great- I couldn't stop dancing and singing in my chair! I've been wanting to check this place out for years but never took the time to go since I live in the area and can go any time, but I'm glad I finally did! This place is 100% worth the visit. You enter through the alley behind the building and ring the doorbell. A door person comes out to greet you, and you give that person the secret passcode. I got the secret passcode from Thaxton Speakeasy's Instagram page. Then I was led down flights of stairs to get to the bar and lounge area. The bar and lounge area appeared really classy. I loved the velvety couches, chill ambiance and music, classy decor, and friendly staff. They had a silent film playing on a projector with various large playing cards displayed on the walls. The bartender had an approachable personality, and the server Kaleigh was also very friendly. I tried two different drinks and they were both phenomenal. My favorite was the El Zarco cocktail. I love sweet, tropical cocktails but not overly sweet, and that's exactly what it was. I also tried the Beyond the Pleasure Principal cocktail and the flavor was good and the froth was enjoyable. While I was glad I got to try it, I will plan to go to other speak-easies before I come back here. The entrance to the speakeasy was in the back alley behind the building, but the alley was dark, dirty and felt unsafe. There was trash everywhere, old dirty furniture lining it and felt very questionable. While I understand the concept of a speakeasy is meant to be secretive, this just felt like I was going to get mugged on my way there. At the entrance the bouncer took our name and phone number and told us the wait would be at least 15mins, but there was another tea/coffee place around the corner at which we could wait until we were called. Since it was cold and windy we decided to trek the 1.5blocks to "Odditeas" coffee/tea shop. We waited, and eventually called over after 20-30mins. When entering the back door we were escorted down a flight of stairs and entered the bar. The drinks menu was small, but I enjoyed what I had. The environment was chill, but the music was a bit loud, so hard to hear my BF when conversing. There were no tables, just small side tables between sets of chairs. We each had a drink , but didn't feel the need for a second. Staff were friendly. No food available. Overall 3.5 stars. read more

What a wonderful idea to have a speakeasy in downtown St. Louis. They have everything from the secret entrance to the password at the door then down the stairs and to the right dim lights terrific drinks and add a yelp gathering with Kelse and it was everything. The charcuterie trays did not disappoint with delectable delicacies luv prosciutto, and Brie fresh fruit salami wild honey and the best snack crackers. I had a white wine spritzer with a generous pour, the bartender was polite and courteous. A nice crowd but the line was steady. This speakeasy a few blocks away from the famed gateway arch is a self proclaimed chic underground hangout. They do not disappoint with the speakeasy experience. They did have a password that does custom to each day - check their IG for 'clues'. They are however not hidden or tucked away in anyway. A large sign calls out the speakeasy name and another sign indicates speakeasy right up front . Their entrance is through the back alley as the sign on the entrance says so it did throw us off a bit to walkthrough a dimly lit alley not knowing what to expect. The entrance through the back alley was fortunately well indicated and you did ring a bell for someone to greet you. The greeter asked the reason for your visit at which point we blurted out the password and we're led into the speakeasy. The entrance did involve multiple stories of stairs before we were led to this multi room speakeasy. The lighting was dim and the seating was well spaced out with multiple couples canoodling in provosts spaces. The bar was definitely the main draw in this space- tastefully designed and decorated. The menus are QR only and you do have to order at the bar. The space is booked on a lot of days for private events so please refer to their website before visiting. The drinks were great with a good concoction of spirit forward and lighter/ bubbly cocktails the taisho and the Sunday kind of love were my favorites. Service at the tables by waiters might be the only adjustment I make to this great spot. A must do in STL! read more

Love the atmosphere here! Perfect place for a chill night out. They have the 1920s theme down pat with excellent decorations and the "hidden" prohibition era basement. Our waitress was great and provided good drink recommendations. My GF and I finally made it in and the place is really neat looking and being a Speakeasy, it was located in a basement. Also, they list a codeword on their social media so you can get in free in the back door in the alley. The drinks weren't cheap ($8+ I think) but they were very good. I didn't want to leave actually. This review is far overdue. My husband and I had our wedding here in March and I was more than impressed! The day went so smoothly thanks to Mad Dog, Kim, and Peter! Everyone was raving about how beautiful the venue was. I planned my entire wedding from Las Vegas and Kim was there every step of the way. It didn't work out that time around, but I couldn't shake it so I held my 10 Year High School Reunion here in 2015! Top four points: 1) Peter was a pleasure to plan with even from out of state while living in Denver. Additionally, Mad Dog (Terry) was great to have onsite the night of the event too! They're both STL legends! 2) The Thaxton is a "one-stop-shop" from ambiance to food/beverage to setup to DJ. And on that note, The Thaxton's house DJ is encouraged... as he should be! DJ Uptown listened to every request I made (i.e. stayed with my playlist) and kept the music loud the entire night! 3) The menu was perfect! Chef Pierre executed to my vision entirely... cheeses & cured meats, hummus & olives, bbq grits & cheddar shrimp, pretzels & beer cheese, toasted ravioli & red peppers, and pulled chicken & hawaiian rolls! Hell yeah! 4) And, must we not forget about the Art Deco decor!!! NOTHING is required to bring this space to life! Totally turnkey and simply stunning.
