Various craft artists, including textile artists, painters, sculptors, ceramicists, wood workers, etc., rent out offices here where they can work on their current projects, as well as show their work in revolving exhibitions. I think the space in the back, that used to be for groups, is utilized for classes. Even in the middle of this largeish space, there was an aunty--kupuna--teaching a student something, when I went in (fabric? weaving? not sure...). Many of the items I saw for sale in one of the small rooms--taken by a network of ceramicists and metal/wire artists--were relatively affordable (though more expensive than Hawai'i Potter's Guild Xmas season type shows in the parks/craft fairs). I looked rather seriously at some cleverly formed pieces, which are calling my name out to go on my desk next to the ol' laptop. Let's support Hawai'i artists! This place is only around for another month or so, before they gentrify-destroy the whole Ward Warehouse area in favor of some pricey condo that NOBODY LOCAL can afford. So GO NOW.

I recently visited this place a couple of times because I was attending a meeting nearby. They are…read morelocated at the Chinatown Gateway Plaza on the 2nd floor. This is the same building that has the satellite city hall office. Parking is either on the street or in nearby lots. There is a municipal parking lot in the same building which entrance is on Bethel Street. Parking is cheap. Both times I went, it was on a Sunday. I found the DAC to be so interesting with the artwork displays from mostly local artists. There is a different exhibit each month and the best part, it's free to visit. They also hold art classes there. The layout of the center is a decent size, white walls, and spacious walking thru. They also have their own restrooms which were very clean. In January, the monthly exhibit was about the WWII internment camp in Waipahu as part of the Honouliuli National Historic Site's 10th anniversary celebration. It was informative & I learned somethings that I never knew before. In March the Hawaii Watercolor Society had a member's showing, which was also an interesting exhibit seeing the beautiful water color paintings. Overall, nice experience to check out.

Checked out the "Space Age Life, Future…read moreDesign 1957-1974" which was "an exhibition showcasing a portion of Tim Apicella's collection from a period in American and European social culture when industrial designers created with optimism, enthusiasm, and bold innovation, producing consumer goods enabled by new technologies such as brightly colored molded plastics, foam, fiberglass, metallics, and synthetic fabrics". Apologies for posting this late because the exhibit was held late January to early February 2026. For us space-age geeks out there, this was a fun exhibit. Will have to keep an eye out for future fun installations at this venue in the future.

In early March, we went to see a movie at the Consolidated Theaters Complex in Ward Village but…read morewere struck by seeing huge pink snail sculptures with polka dots. We thought we were hallucinating but were luckily brought back to our senses when we saw a banner announcing the artwork of famed Japanese Pop-Artist Yayoi Kusama. If you know the pop-artist name, Andy Warhol, then you should know Yayoi Kusama. Both were highly creative, avant-garde and influential pop-(DOT) artists in the 1960's. Ms. Kusama has always used polka dots to express her art and how she sees the World. This exhibit is called "Footprints of Life" because it showcases Ms. Kusama's "eye" for patterns. She has created this exhibit for especially for Hawai'i as she put her signature polka dots on O'ahu's native Kāhuli tree snails. We are fortunate that Ward Village is co-presenting this artwork with the Honolulu Biennial Foundation. The full exhibit is on display at the Ward Village Courtyard of the historic IBM building. We were told the county didn't like customers parking on the road in front of his place. The website has been hijacked too when I clicked on it. That said the guy was very talented and every time we went to Oahu, we had him do a carving for us as a memento of our travels there. We met Mr Niu and he was very friendly and hospitable Gave is a short tour and history of his craft and wood types. This was in April 2013 and today, we still think of him. We purchased a personalize family large makau (Hawaiian fish hook) , turtle for our daughter and manta ray necklace our son chose. All bringing us pleasure and happy memories and good luck! After years and years of wanting to go, I FINALLY saw the Shangri La Museum up close and personal…read more You need to make reservations online and take the museum's shuttle bus to and from this location. Pay for parking at the Honolulu Museum of Art and check in, then wait for your shuttle in the front of the museum. You'll be shuttled in AC buses. Once you're done, they'll take you back and you have full access to the Honolulu Museum of Art for the same day. That's such a great deal! Two museums for the price of one ticket.

The gallery is well lit with daylight balanced lighting making it easy to see colors and textures of three dimensional works while not creating distracting reflections on flat, reflective surfaces. They are currently one of the Hawaii Triennial galleries. Three artists works are being shown including an installation outside the gallery. Very friendly, informative staff. Tip: Visit on a Saturday (10:00-14:00). Lots of free parking. Weekday visitors, check the gallery website before heading out. Parking through gate one and three in green visitors stall only. Parking is free. A great, but short experience. Art in 45 minutes. Why not?

Even though we saw a sign identifying this place in front of the parking lot, we really couldn't tell where the garden began. By the time we saw Waikahalulu Falls (Photo 10), we finally realized we were in the middle of it. Even though there was an abundance of native plants, none of them were identified as such, so we frankly didn't learn anything. We just made our way to the picnic grounds next to the waterfall and then exited. To be honest, we only stopped here strolling from the original Liliha Bakery in Kalihi to Chinatown, so we didn't have any expectations coming here. I saw a family fishing in one of the ponds, she stated to that there are fish in that dirty pond, I wish that there signs leading you to the waterfall. The highlight for me here was getting some sample from a live paper tree.
