NOTE: I hope this review doesn't get merged with the public art business page. This is a separate and NEW business page. The other evening, we walked into the Pow!Wow! Hawaii "Headquarters" looking for the relocation of Amy Wong's street wear and street art store formerly known as "Big Bad Wolf". When we found it, we found this new store named "POW! WOW! Hawai'i General Store" and peered in through the glass door to see Street Artist Jasper Wong working on completing the set up the store. The sign on the door stated it was closed at the time so I waited until daylight to call as the set up looked quite complete. When I called this afternoon to verify if this was the former Big Bad Wolf store and when this store would open to the public, Jasper Wong answered the phone. He confirmed their plan on opening this store on Monday and was nice enough to confirm business hours. I appreciated that he took the time to answer my questions as I expressed my excitement about the addition of this store to this neighborhood. I can't wait to check out this store for street wear apparel and accessories or greeting cards and artwork from fabulous artists who have participate in the public art in Our Kaka'ako. read more

Art is therapy. There's something peaceful about painting. Every stroke, no matter which media, captures a feeling that cannot be described with words. When you put every ounce of energy and emotion on canvas.....oh, it's such a release. I'm sure that everyone at Pow! Wow! Hawai'i has a similar story....passionate about creativity and expressing imagination. I love that this place supports art on a grand scale. During the opening reception of this year's festival, we walked around to see artists in action. Some viewers interrupted artists to take their photo with murals in progress. I love that Honolulu has Pow! Wow! Hawaii! It honestly fills an empty place in my heart. I'm from Long Island City in New York City, Home of 5 Pointz considered the Graffiti Mecca, it was white washed and destroyed in the face of greedy developers and gentrification in 2013. Actually today (2/12/18) 21 aerosol Artist won a $6.7 million lawsuit against the developer. So being someone who grew up around the birthplace of hip hop and modern graffiti culture This event made me especially feel at home in Hawaii. I love that a culture that a grew up with, spread around the world and is celebrated as it is now here in Hawaii. The artists are amazing and the event is too. You not only see the work for the event but all over the city in retail shops, hotels, and restaurants. Especially prominent are the founders Jasper Wong and Kamea Hadar with just awesome work but there's so many artist local and abroad features. OG Slick, It's odd my photos keep getting removed. Review #200! Every February is Pow Wow! The streets of kakaako (Auahi Street, Cooke Street, Keawe Street and more streets) and salt area are updated for different murals. 2020 was the 10th annual event in Hawaii. Artists local and from all over the world have a "wall" on many different businesses to create their art piece. I went on Saturday, Feb. 15 for the finale block party, endless summer jam night two, and paradise soccer club and kicks to the pitch tournament. All these events occurred 6-10pm ... I parked around 5:30 pm near Longs Drugs in Kakaako and walked the two blocks. Some people are there early to look at the artists, take photos with the artists and more. Look online http://www.powwowworldwide.com for the schedule at different cities and what they have for the two weeks usually scheduled. The finale block party had live concert, food trucks, live art, artist signing autographs in books or tote bags. They gave a tote bag by the tokidoki artist but the line was really long so I avoided that. The vendors sold shirts, food, stickers, art and many more. I got food from Banan. The monster tent was giving away free cans of monster and Heineken was passing out free beer cans with ID at one location. The endless summer jam night two was in SALT that had a stage for rappers, break dancers which they had a battle and music shows. The location at SALT is referred to as "The Barn" right by Orange Theory and Moku restaurant. The paradise soccer club and kicks to pitch tournament had indoor soccer tournament in "the barn." They had netting so the soccer ball wouldn't fly all over and it was like 3 vs 3 with a small goal net. Such a fun experience to watch artists, talk to artist, hear live music and DJ with breakdancing. Look forward to this event every year. read more

Street Artists UNITE!!! As explained by Jasper Wong himself: "The name comes from Comic Book Culture." POW!-"Represents the immense impact a piece of art can have on a viewer" WOW!-"Signifies a person's reaction to that art." Entering its fifth year, POW! WOW! Hawaii is a massive gathering of contemporary artists form all over the world that helps bring the community together through the expression and creation of art. The first one was in Hong Kong in 2010, But he decided to take it back to his hometown. Awesome move!!! Founder and Lead Director Jasper Wong and Co-Lead Director Kamea Hadar are the driving forces of the Pow! Wow! movement, and every year, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Since 2011, street artists from all around the globe have been gathering every beginning of February in Kaka'ako, transforming plain walls into masterpieces of art. This two week gathering of exhibitions, panel discussions, and shows on art, media, music, and culture culminates in a massive block party and a "Secret Walls" showdown at nearby Lana Lane Studios, another one of Mr. Wong's most recent ventures. Pow Wow's grand opening was perfect! Collaborating with Asato Family, they had their own sherbet flavor: Pow Wow Punch! I was lucky to have been one of 20 people that were able to get a pint! This place is so cool, I can totally see this place being a cool event spot. I also loved the gift shop, lots of cool swag and hopefully more to come. I randomly discovered Kaka'ako and Pow!Wow! as I was driving from the airport into Waikiki. I was gazing out the window and saw a really cool mural in between two buildings and quickly took a picture (I later learned this was a mural by the super talented Kamea Hadar, co-director of Pow!Wow!, who also has several more murals around Honolulu). Driving along the main road, I also caught sight of the "Aloha" hands by OG Slick and Shepard Fairey's "Golden Future." I wanted to see more! A couple of days later, I ventured back over to Kaka'ako and walked along the streets and alley ways and was impressed by the street art and culture in this community. The vibrant colors, textures, and messages that each of these artists and pieces represents is playful at times but powerful by nature. The conceptual thinking and execution amazes me. I've been a fan of street art for years and this worldwide organization is awesome. I hope it continues to bring creatives and the community together! read more

I too am a lover of the arts. I think it is wonderful for street artists and artists in general that love art to be able to display their art in public so that the masses are able to enjoy the art. There are a few community groups and police groups that believe that buildings that show graffiti are more likely then to be vandalized and then having windows broken and then the buildings themselves being broken into so they try to promote painting and repainting the walls so that it looks better. I think that this is an even better idea- to have art on the walls of buildings to promote a sense of place even in our urbanization of Kaka'ako. I was down there Thursday night before hand and Friday before hand with little keiki. They loved watching the artists who were very respectful and friendly sharing about their art with our little ones. I love how there is the local flavor mixed so well with Asian anime, mixed with historical place, mixed with humor mixed with music, mixed with fun. Wonderful to see so much life in the urban jungle. read more

Great spot for taking photos! I have visited on late Friday night afternoon and also on Sunday afternoon. I recommend Sunday for getting the best pics and less parked cars to get in your way of great photos. Only thing to watch out for is meter parking cops. Sundays is free but on Friday and during the week they do not play. So make sure you bring enough change for parking. If you want murals in Hawaii I recommend here and they change it every year which is pretty awesome also! read more
