Compared to about 10-12 years ago, the 91 freeway is a lot better than what it used to be. I call it the "gateway to OC/beach cities" for people living inland and off the 15 fwy. I used to hate this freeway as it was always under construction in some kind of way. The road work has improved immensely over the years and with FasTrak lanes, you don't really get gridlocked like before. There are still times when you will be rolling at a snail's pace, but that's usually during rush hour traffic. I go to OC occasionally, so this is my thoroughfare to get there. I've taken it on weekends and it hasn't been bad at all. I might be making my way to the beach cities more often now since it's not as terrible a drive as it once was. I guess I've had better experiences on the 91 compared to others. Well, let me explain... I was a new transplant from Florida and I honestly did not know about the Fastrak Passes. And I thought why aren't people using this lane. Long story short, for about 6 months I used this lane without a Fastrak Pass usually flying on the 91 from Beaumont to L.A. with absolutely no issues. I suppose I'm lucky I was never caught. So I guess if you tell yourself it's a nice time to reflect on your life and ponder the fact of why you would choose to spend this much of it in the traffic of what is southern California, perhaps one would see the 91 Freeway differently. Try it and see. I, personally, think it is a nice, smooth and easy route when you need to come and go from Riverside County...but I am a half-full type of gal. :) read more

This stretch of the 91 Freeway sux giant donkey balls. There! It's been said... Sad part is, If the wife and / or I wanna go to Vail Lake, Pechanga, Pala, Harrah's etc., we're pretty much stuck with this $hithole stretch of freeway. Once in a blue moon, you'll get lucky and "ease through" (smh) the stretch of freeway from the end of the express lanes to the 15 Fwy interchange. But 99% of the time you won't. Trust me and the tens of thousands that traverse and commute this craphole daily... (It's not called the Corona Crawl for nuthin'). I can get out and walk that stretch faster most of the time... Hopefully all the construction will ease my pain and make it a tad bit bearable. Either that or make it so I don't have to plan my travel at 3:00am, with the ever so wishful thinking it won't be TOTALLY shut down for construction. read more

This section of the 91 freeway is absolutely atrocious! We drive through here with our fingers crossed, hoping and praying that we one...don't get in an accident and two...aren't sitting in traffic for hours. You have all kinds of punk ass drivers, especially those assholes who have 10 car spaces in front of them and still break, or I should say slam on their brakes when traffic...wayyyyyyyy up ahead of them brakes, or you have folks cutting you off or not using a signal when they jump over at the last minute and they look at you like you're crazy, or my favorite...they jump into or out of carpool as soon as the lane their in stops, either causing an accident or having a near miss. You name it, I've seen it...a lady putting on her eye makeup and talking on the phone while driving, a guy reading the paper and driving, and another guy who was so busy talking to his passenger and couldn't keep his eyes on the road, so he kept swerving while he's also trying to talk with his hands, so he couldn't hold the wheel, then there are the people who sit with their chest on the steering wheel and they're holding on for dear life while driving super slow in the carpool or fast lane, no less. Don't they realize that if that if that airbag comes out, their head will damn near be in the back seat?? You probably say, "How can you notice all that if your driving?" My answer...Because I'm sitting in slow moving TRAFFIC! And don't go on a holiday weekend or something like that...hope you brought snacks and a little porta potty! 91 Freeway, the plan is for major widening and re-construction of all bridges and overpasses from Corona to Riverside. Already going on for years, it is now going from Bad to Worse. This now includes a major artery for so many, Main Street, widening and closures at Main Street in Corona, cleverly named the "Main Street Squeeze". Some dude has a great sense of humor, huh? So, Ready...Set....Stop! As of January 20, 2015, you can forget to use the Main Street to 91 Eastbound on-ramp for the NEXT 15 MONTHS. It has been shut down completely while they do major construction for the long neglected, poorly designed 91 to 15 freeway merges and huge overpasses. It has always been a royal nightmare getting onto the freeway here, a horrid and exceedingly dangerous merge of cars, some trying to merge onto the 15, some just trying to get on at all. And then there are the rude, ME FIRST drivers, you know who you are. And people, learn how to drive through construction zones so I don't have to keep talking to my guardian angels on your behalf. They are demanding overtime pay. This will directly affect me and my entire household, it is the most convenient freeway access from our home. But I will grin and bear it, since the plan is to fix it the right way. Right? Besides, I already have devised several interim Plan B's, including allowing extra time heading toward Riverside, going on side streets ....S~H~U~D~D~E~R! This was the freeway where a barely legal young girl spun out in the rain and crossed all lanes of the freeway as she entered from the 57 and sideswiped my front end of my beloved Nissan crushing it along with my arm and drove away with not even a scratch but left me with a very expensive ride to UCI and no more Nissan. Props though to the off duty fire fighter who was driving behind us and immediately parked his Hummer behind us, threw on this Yellow coat and started lighting flares as we were calling 911. he also tried calming my 220 pound husband who can bench press over 400 pounds who decided to get out of my car in traffic. This freeway has always been busy, night or day. The further towards Corona, the worst it gets. Good luck my friends and be safe. I refuse to drive this freeway at night. Yay For Freeways! The 91 is great for the OC portion. It has four lanes, a carpool lane and is free from graffiti. Weird, as soon as you cross into LA County it sucks nuts. Early hour mornings (4-5am) are just fine. 710 portion has sucky truck traffic in the afternoons. CHP always looking for carpool violations and hand held infractions around the State College off ramp. I got pulled over twice to make sure I had the little one in the back. Waste of time during heavy traffic. Generally, I prefer driving via the 22 even if it's further in distance when I need to head west bound. Overall, AOK. read more

I left my sunglasses at the doc's house when I went for Thanksgiving, so this Sunday afternoon I took the time to retrieve them from the IE. The drive to Loma Linda was not bad at all, it took me an hour to clear the distance as there was no traffic. However, the ride was wasn't as great. Traffic started to pile up heading westbound. As a lifelong Los Angeleno, I'm used to sitting in traffic for prolonged periods of time. It's the bad air along the way that made this drive suck. I don't know where it came from, but it smelled like a chemical spill in the area twenty miles west of Loma Linda. It smelled almost as bad as the 710 freeway. Fortunately the drivers around me were pretty reasonable. No crazies cutting people off or playing fast and furious. The next time I make the drive from the IE, I will wait until nighttime. read more

I would advise you if you purchase a fast track. It will allow you to bypass all the traffic. I do recommend this freeway. read more

91 Freeway.....I hate you. I hate the super slow morning and afternoon commute. I love the Fastrak lanes, but hate that it's only available on a small section of this hellish highway. I hate the construction lane closures that make it 1000000x worse. I hate that you should be 3 more lanes wider on both sides of the freeway and even after construction is completed, it will still be the Devil's freeway. Caltrans - I hate that your website is so f-ing difficult to understand and figure out lane closures and planned construction, making navigating the 91 even more difficult. I hate the assholes who cut in/out of the HOV lanes when they're driving solo. I hate the motorcycles who zoom in between lanes, not only in bumper to bumper traffic, but cutting you off when you're going 75 mph almost causing the cars they're splitting to crash. Sitting in the car and listening to music, I see the day break into a new day by viewing the beautiful Southern California sky. I am lucky to be commuting eastbound on the 91 to Orange County. I get to see the sunrise every weekday morning and see the sunset on way back home. Commuting on the 91 might not be so smooth every morning but this freeway certainly gets me from point A to point B. It beats going inner roads and having to stop at every mile. The lanes are fairly smooth, no potholes (none that I have driven over), wider lanes than the ones in Los Angeles, a carpool lane, and shoulders to pullover in case of an emergency. As an added perk, a service patrol truck travels on the slowest lane scouting for any stranded motorist during peak traffic. I know this service exist because I was once a stranded motorist with a flat tire. I was able to pull over on the shoulder and the service patrol truck was already parked behind me before I could even call AAA. They changed my tire to my spare for free. People take for granted the infrastructure that this freeway offers. Compare the commute to Downtown Los Angeles and you will see and feel the difference. Look how close you are to the car next to you and think where would you pull over in case of a flat. Hope you will wish that you were back on the 91 freeway. read more

Did not know you could review a freeway!!! Lol Well... The 91 frwy is probably one of the worst for traffic. Always seems to be traffic, and lots of accidents on this frwy. The 15 to the 91 intercharge going towards OC irritates me because people merge after the bridge and then stay on the far right, which is an exit lane (exit for main street)... It never fails, everyyyy morning some dooshbag decides that they are gona drive in the exit lane just to get ahead of some of the traffic- then they cut everyone off last minute to get over! This is my first review of a freeway... Alas. There usually is very few good things to say about a freeway in California, and this is no different. The only plus for this is the places that it brings me. I find it is convenient for that, if a bit slow and aggravating at times. That said, it does bring me to the GF, some awesome restaurants (and Happy Hours), and some of my favorite breweries. And, its not miserable ALL the time. Just have to deal with it. And watch out for the chronic brakers or texters or otherwise distracted individuals. read more

This was originally to be a 2 star review cause of the horrible, horrible traffic I experienced last Friday, but I after I cooled off things became clearer and in focus. Yeah the 91 is Aokay if you get on it at the right time. Ive taken it many times to Disneyland and back without a problem. On the day I was able to "check in", I did so cause we had not moved in minutes. Rarely do I ever go eastbound beyond the 5 freeway...but last Friday we headed to reach the 15 freeway. BIG MISTAKE. That whole commute was a lesson learned and my sympathy to anyone who doesn't have commuter fast pass thats good to the 15 connector (I think)..its pretty bad. Hi 91 freeway. it's been a love-hate relationship with you. when i was younger, before the express lane was built on the 91 fwy, i would love riding in my parent's car down the 91 W to get to our destinations. I didn't mind traffic cuz i wasn't the one driving. As i grew older and finally obtained my own car, i started to dread going on the 91. especially around the imperial hwy/weir canyon area. This freeway is trying to act like a hot shot. wtf are you think... you ain't no 5 freeway. the 91 freeway needs to get off its high horse and not be as congested as it normally is. I swear to god, i have never seen a clear lane on the 91W (with the exception of the fast track lane) in the morning time. and i have not seen a clear lane on the 91E during rush hour @ 5pm. i guess the only benefit of going on the 91 freeway, is if i want a free hair cut. Cuz you will rip out every strand of your hair driving on the 91 during rush hour. trust. read more

No, I do not like this freeway. At all. Always bad traffic, lots of crazy drivers, and a hassle. In the summertime, you'll get lot of people heading westbound to the beach (ugh), and then you get people heading east on their way to Vegas. Always bad traffic. Lots of newer communities in the Inland Empire are making the traffic even worse. Can't imagine how terrible it will be in a few years. If you only have a few hrs left in your life, get on the 91 to experience a never ending trip. Literally your time on this freeway will last forever. There is always traffic bumper to bumper. Holidays are especially fun- expect to crawl about 3 mins per mile. The only saving grace is that Californians with spare cash can get fast trak and take the express lanes. I reviewed the 105 freeway earlier, now it's time for the 91. Freeway reviews are fun. : ) Compared to the 105, 91 freeway is horrible.... it's....like.. pretty bad.... especially during rush hour. 4 pet peeves: 1. potholes!!... Pretty bad ones too.... and cracks...... 2. Merging onto this freeway... (You know how most freeways have you merge into the right lane?... Well for some reason, the 91 freeway, once you floor it on the on ramp, the lane you are in will exit so you have to put on your blinker and cut into the left lane within like.. 50 feet or else you'll be forced to exit.... which is dangerous to do if there is traffic since no one lets you cut. Basically, I floor it at the light, immediately put on my left blinker and try to cut in front of someone and hope I don't get rear ended) 3. TRUCKS.... and the instances of them trying to merge and cut in front of you. They are slow and block your view. 4. Accidents or stalled car..... I think the other day, Sigalert showed 3 within a 3 mile radius. Welp, enjoy your drive :) read more

91 East toward IE will always be horrific especially rush hour times. Rush hour times for 91 is a pretty broad in terms it can start as early as 3pm through 8pm at night. Anybody who drives on a normal basis to and from IE or OC the stretch Imperial Hwy up to the I-15 could be in agreement that it's the worse. They ought to put a similar concept of dual-level road like the I-110 near downtown LA but from I-55 to I-15. They attempted to widen eastbound by adding an additional lane from the 241/91 interchange but still doesn't help much. I'd say its more of a hate than love relationship with 91 fwy comes to mind. read more

Construction is complete but I still see cones and some evidence of work continuing. Even with the transponder the traffic is often bad....a mess really. I don't have to drive on this freeway often, really ever - I'm usually a passenger when he has business in Riverside, I go for the ride. Good thing we're terrific at conversation because we can get lost in dialogue and before we know it we're at our destination. Truth is, there's too many people here and too many people driving. It's not likely any of this is going to get better - even with mass transit, I believe it's a bit too late for that. I understand the world population increases every year equivalent to 7 Los Angeles'. At that rate, we're doomed. I hate the 91 EAST!!! I think this freeway has the worst rush hour & the most unexpected accidents!! I take the 91E to go visit my parents in the IE and I usually dread it. The worst was when they was an accident and it took me 3 hours to get to the 15 freeway. Also, on Thanksgiving even if you leave a 9 am, it will take you 3 hours to get to the 15. Although I must say that the carpool lane does work on this freeway. Definitely comes in handy when you want to go to Disneyland. Looks like it's not so bad in the morning.
