If I were to whittle it down to one souvenir shop on the PLZ, I would recommend Alamo Drugs. They have both what you would be looking for (a countless collection of souvenirs) along with a -- shocker -- actual drug store in the back. If you need anything for that which ails you (pain killers, cold relievers, stomach issues) or toiletries are in the back. Up front is the souvenir shop. From crucifixes to Davy Crockett coonskin caps to Texas-themed ornaments to Alamo beer to t-shirts and cowboy hats to toys .. let's just say there's a little something for everyone. I went in to Dos Carolinas a month before Father's Day thinking I would find something unique for…read moremy dad. When I enter, I was not greeted and actually stood at the front desk staring at the attendant for a while before I finally said "I could use some help". Yes, she was busy with another customer but she could have at least acknowledged me. Having a personal history working in retail, that's what you do, especially when you walk into a high end custom shop. I end up picking a shirt off the rack because I didn't have my dad's measurements to make a custom guayaberas and all I wanted was my dad's name embroidered on it. I pay for the shirt and the embroidering which cost over $200 (whatever, my dad is worth it and the material was nice) and the lady (same lady that ignored me) said it would take 2-3 weeks for the embroidering and they would call when it was ready. 3 weeks pass and no call! I take time out of my schedule to go to the store to see what's up. No shirt. I tell the girl (new girl) I was concern d that my ordered wasn't entered because the original attendant didn't seem to really attend to me (no pun). She types some keys on my key board and says "yup you order is here, I'm sure it will be in by Monday, Wednesday at the latest". Thursday before Father's Day. Thursday, and no call. I go in yet again. Finally the manager is here to attend me. I explained my situation. She looks up my order and it's not in the system?!?!? Why would the previous girl from a week ago lie to me and tell me it was there? How was this over looked in the first place?? The manager assured me it will be ready by the next day and even offers to drive it to me the next day. I did finally end up with the guayabera but Dos Carolinas will never have my business again especially for something that's time sensitive such as holiday/birthday gifts, weddings or events. I gave them 2 stars because the quality of the shirt is nice and the manager did fix their wrongs and even offered to drop off the item with me, but not worth my stress or money really.

Especially love the sculptures that can be part of your ofrenda. An ofrenda honors those family members that have died. They are to welcome the dead to the alter and include meaningful items to the deceased. The store displays are also filled with Mexican blankets, jewelry, blown glass items and typical souvenir trinkets like key chains, T-shirts and sweatshirts.

I fell in love with these hand painted portraits that they had . Unfortunately they didn't have one that was for my job but amazingly the owner took down my name and number after asking me what I had wanted and even offered if I wanted certain colors on it. Not even a full week passed by and they called to tell me my portrait was in. I was very impressed with the timely manner they got it to me and overall the service the provided . After coming to pick it up I also bought a very nice and cute nativity scene. I made sure to tell them I'd be back very soon maybe to even order 1 or 2 more portraits for my favorite coworkers haha! I took the ring back and the owner called me a few days later to say they had two other rings just like it and we could do an exchange. I was surprised because the gal who sold it to me said they were all unique, hand made & one of a kind. So that's why I initially bought one that was 2 sizes too large. I left a 2nd time from this shop, very happy with an appropriately fitting ring! Again I wore it home. Then took it out that weekend for another road trip to Austin, so excited to wear it for my best friend to see in person! Before I arrived, I looked down and noticed a stone had fallen out....again! The gal working at the shop insinuated that without the stone, there was no proof I hadn't done something to damage the ring causing it to fall out. The namesake of the park is William B. Travis, a 19th-century American lawyer-soldier, who at age 26, was a Lt. Colonel in the Texas Army. He died during the Battle of the Alamo. Interestingly enough, this park also once served as a camp for Confederate soldiers, which leads into an interesting segue into the next topic... STATUE CONTROVERSY That statue obelisk at the park's center is actually in honor of war veterans who fought for the South during the Civil War. Former San Antonio City Council member Mario Salas said "It is time to remove the tribute to the southern rebellion." So the soldier's long-term future may be uncertain. MAYORAL RESPONSE However, Democrat Mayor Ivy Taylor, San Antonio's first black AND female mayor, has a different impression of the importance of a clear landscape of history. While other liberal politicians in this bastion of Texas liberty pushing to eradicate Confederate historical sites and symbols from the Lone Star State's past, Ms. Taylor retains a more sober, thoughtful, less reactionary perspective. And interestingly enough, even as another San Antonio councilman, Alan Warrick, had communicated to Ms. Taylor recently to inventory all of the city's Confederate flags & monuments, and then decide if they should be removed, she responded back with thoughtful introspection: "Slavery and the Civil War are part of the American legacy. For more than 200 years we've been trying to fully realize the revolutionary premise of democracy: all men are created equal," she stated. Selectively erasing pieces of our past may make it more comfortable for us but it also makes it easier for many to ignore the historic struggles of Blacks and other minorities in this country, a struggle for equality that continues today." "It is offensive to use the rebel battle flag as a symbol of a city or state but it is also offensive to pretend that Texas was never a slave state or that racism has played no role in our history for the past 150 years." TODAY Notwithstanding the above controversy, the City of San Antonio's Center City Development & Operations Department (CCDO), still hosts the annual "Dinner in Travis Park" which raises funds that philanthropically further the productive development of the park. Since it reopened in 2014, Travis Park continues to be a vibrant gathering place for residents and tourists and is award-winning urban space hosting almost 500 events a year.
