Over the years I have bought a few pairs of very expensive shoes here. If you can find shoes that suit your needs/tastes, they last forever. I have several. I was told by my coworkers I should try the trendy Hoka since I'm on my feet for 13 hours. I have bilateral deformities in my feet and finding shoes that don't cause blisters in these areas is very challenging. For $160, I was optimistic.... but after one day if wearing my feet were in agony. I put them back in the box with a plan to return in my next free day. In the interim I lost the receipt. Thankfully since they have a record if all my purchases, I was able to get a full refund without any problems. read more

They have all the coolest, hippest brands here. UGG, Sorrel, Birkenstock's, Dansko, Merrill and Ecco to name a few. The last 3 purchases here were slippers. Alaskan's like hanging out in the house in slippers too! We have tile floors and walking in socks your feet still get cold. Two salespeople at the lower level of this store pulled out every pair of shoes that I could possibly use, held knowledgeable discussions of the merits for long-distance walking, and patiently answered questions for over an hour while I tried on shoes. Before I lived here, I had visited and saw many people around here wearing Hokas so on my first trip I also stopped by here when checking out downtown. I loved them. Fast forward to now, and I had went in for a pair when they went on sale. While I'm there, I also had asked about the Hoka hiking boots. The guy working with me was super helpful and nice. Knew a lot about all the shoes there and was able to explain why the ones I liked were great, etc. He also let me know the boots had the best sale price they've had on them and it was a pretty good deal so I bought a pair too. My normal shoes had an issue with the strings that Hoka wanted me to ship to them to replace a shoe string! I went into the store to ask what the warranty experience would be like and he said that he's just give me a new pair of shoestrings for me. Even laced them for me since I'm too dumb to lace them myself. Superb staff and they honor sale prices from Hokas website. I'll look no further for getting shoes than this place, thanks for being great! read more

Stopped in on a Saturday evening to peruse with my husband a good pair of house slippers for him. He had been needing a good pair for a few years now, and my birthday cash gift to him for the Walking Store gave him incentive. The store in the mall itself was about to close, yet the nice young lady working there, told us the store on the lower level was still open for another hour. So, we ventured on down. We were helped by a young man who attempted to have my husband try on a pair of women's slippers. What? He then provided another pair that was too large, and getting his attention to come on back to us was a bit frightful. Because even though he was just a few feet away, his focus was on just wandering aimlessly. Could he not see the hello? waving! out of the corner of his eye? Another clerk stepped in, who was far more peppy, and offered a 10% discount for the pair that were being used as a display. Fair enough. A sale was made, and upon leaving, I made sure to thank the gentlemen. But the look in their eyes told me that we had already been forgotten. Even though our purpose was fulfilled, there was very little pleasantry about the whole experience. read more

Fantastic store! If you're after Dansko's they carry them at the Northern Lights store. If you're after Sanita's this is your store. They also have a great selection of several other brands. Clarks, Ariats, & SAS to name a few. The staff at this store is very friendly and helpful - patient too! They must have helped me with 10+ different pairs of Sanitas before I found one. I'd never tried them before and didn't know what styles would work for me, and had never tried the European sizes. I finally found one that felt like it was specifically made for me! Even then, I had them hold my pair while I ran downstairs to the basement level clearance store to see what they had there as well. Staff in the clearance place just as friendly and helpful. Ended up making my purchase upstairs at the regular store. Will definitely be going there again and will recommend to others. Would like to try out the Northern Lights store too. read more

I had the best experience at the store today and was incredibly grateful for the service I received from Troy. His name tag said "Troy 12," so I'm not sure if he was a clone, but any store would be lucky to have just one employee like him on their staff. I had a question about the pricing on a purchase I made five months ago, which he was able to lookup in my purchase history. I simply asked a question about a store policy, and he didn't argue the point with me at all and adjusted my purchase history on the spot to make I received credit for a purchase toward free shoes, even though all I really did was ask a question for clarity's sake. I was extremely grateful for his willingness to help me out and for the enthusiasm with which he did so. This is just one more reason why I go to this store rather than their competitors, who may sell similar shoes and brands but just can't compare when it comes to customer service. read more

I have finally decided that I am done with trying to shop at this store. They absolutely never have a size women's 6 in any shoe that I want to try on. They also do not have a good selection of insoles. They young girls that work there are sweet but have no knowledge at all. When I was having foot problems I asked for a zero drop shoe, which is very popular right now... and REI has a whole wall line of them... and the girl had no idea what I was talking about. I went to a specialty shoe store that was 1/3 the size of this one recently in little Hood River, OR and it was incredible. I found so many things to buy in my size... and my husband found some incredible cork insoles. Lastly, this is not a problem anymore, but at their midtown store they allowed a very negative, controlling, grouchy manager stay for years and this is why so many would not shop there, myself included. REI finally figured out that they were missing out on so much business by not carrying small women's shoes that they now carry all of their shoes down to a 6. Ak Walking Shoe should follow suit. read more

I really like this store for the well made shoes I buy for work. A decent pair of danskos will last years with a bit of loving care. In fact, the mary janes I have look brand new and I've had them since 2007, and they were $120. I just bought another pair in a different color and the price was exactly the same! $20/yr is not too shabby. Will come again to browse other styles so I can expand my feet fashion. read more

I really like this store but it can get really crowded. I've bought all types of shoes and boots here over the years. Service is great (as long as they don't get distracted) and shoe/boot quality is the best. They'll also give you a card to keep track of your purchases. Once you've bought six pairs, the next one is free. Great deal! read more

I purchased a pair of Clark shoes. After wearing these for a day, I developed rub marks on the back of the foot. There is a seam behind the inner liner causing the rub. Since the defect was not noticeable (behind the liner), The Walking Store would not exchange the shoe. Shop here for size as the staff is very friendly. Buy at Amazon or Zappos to get customer service. read more

I had the most unfriendliest, rude, and unattentive helper at the Alaska Walking Store in Anchoarge. it was Two Saturdays ago, the store was empty and there were two young girls busy gossipping. Each time I had to chase her down or look for this female helper, each time she bought box of shoes she litterally threw the boxes on the floor and dashed away to finish her stories....and each time I looked for. I have bought shoes and purses from this store before and now, this was and is my last stop to this store, and I will let all my friends know how terrible the service was. read more

I had read some bad reviews that yelp deemed "not recommended" in reference to poor customer service, but I hope this review is heeded by others. The employees are very friendly and helpful. However, if something goes wrong it is not pleasant. They erroneously charged my credit card for $183. I spent 3 1/2 hours in the store trying to resolve this issue with the store and my bank. In the end, they still charged my account. A week later, I am still trying to resolve this issue. I spoke directly with the owner who shifted blame to the bank for the charge that her store processed on my account. She even refused to cover my $20 parking ticket I received as a result of needing to stay in the store for over 3 hours to resolve their error. At first, I was going to just accept paying the ticket, but when I found out they still charged my account for $183 in error a week later, I asked the owner to cover the charge. She was "baffled" and continued to blame my bank. I will not return and recommend others to follow one of the "not recommended" reviews to purchase elsewhere in order to have some security when things go awry. This store is great as long as there is no problems, but for the money we pay for shoes, I expect better service even after the sale...or an erroneous charge. read more
