This place was sooo cute! We were confused at first where the restaurant was but found it through Yelp photos. The restaurant/speak easy is located in an alley with an unmarked door. We found ourselves inside and it was a small but homey place. We didnt have reservations but they were able to seat us at a sitting area by the window. This place serves cocktails and other drinks. We also decided to try their tapas style food! We got the beef tartare which was absolutely mind blowing! Its prob one of the best ones I've had in awhile. I just wished we got more pieces of bread to pair with the meat. We also got the calamari (balsamic reduction was great) bone marrow with escargot (also very good), smoked pork belly two ways (amazing) and the rabbit (which was our least favorite but still had a lot of flavors). Overall our food and the cocktails we got were excellent! Would def. recommend this place to others for some good food and drinks!

This place is always a 10! We drove 3 hours as a Sunday outing and Alley Light is always our last stop. Service is always perfect and the food is unique. Amazing quality all around.

The best steak tartare I have ever had in my life.

I was surprised by a wonderful dinner at this local restaurant. While there we read the story of the chef and her husband and was completely enthralled with their teamwork and the restaurant itself. The food was nothing short of astonishing. We enjoyed the steak tartare, the bone marrow with escargot, The duck confit, and three other dishes. After the incredible meal we met the chef. She and her husband Chris are absolute delights. I cannot say enough about this wonderful venue, the attentive staff, the ambience, and of course, most importantly the food and drink. If there was a way to award them 10 stars, I would.

The Alley Light popped up on our radar while searching for speakeasy's on our short trip to Charlottesville. We visited the place at around 8:30 on a Saturday and the place was swamped. We got a standing table in 5 mins but since we had to wait 30 mins for a place at the bar. Even though they note down your information for a waitlist on a piece of roughed up paper, their waitlist system was pretty efficient. The drinks selection isn't vast but well curated. They also had a decent selection of mocktails (which isn't usually the case). We ordered the Grapefruit and Guava soda and the 1890 Absinthe Martini. Both hit the spots. The servers were nice and overall the vibe was chill.

Our first time at the Alley Light. The service was wonderful. They provided suggestions for food and drinks and they did not disappoint. The ambience was very comfortable and a great stop to sit and chat with friends.

Huge fans we are now! You actually have to work to find this place. What a hidden gem. The place has charm. Staff are amazing. Make reservations and do not request to sit by the window. Those two tables sit very low to the floor. Not good for this old man. We tried a variety of items. All were good. Service, staff, and the overall experience were excellent and we shall return. Keep up the great work you folks are doing.

My first trip to the alley light just involved cocktails and I was immediately sold on the innovative concept. Had to come back for my favorite garden sour cocktail again and try the food was very enamored with every bite. Started out with marinated mushrooms and the were a delight. I'd definitely recommend the hummus (so good I forgot a photo). Moved on to the scallops which were a hit for both myself and plus one. Finished off with the tartare- delish and decadent. I'd highly recommend trying out this gem of a spot.

Charlottesville, who knew you had such amazing speakeasies! We got the chance to stop by Alley Light on a road trip through Cville and it was such an interesting treat. We went on a Monday and assumed it wouldn't be busy but they were fully booked for reservations so we decided to arrive right when they opened at 5 pm. It's really hard to find but that makes it all the more fun - it's tucked away in an alley with no signage just an old wooden door. We walked in and went to the hostess who mentioned they were fully booked but offered us a table as long as we could get in and out in 1.5 hours - no problem at all and we were super grateful to get the chance to try it! We sat at the bar which had a paired down food menu with all of their delicious cocktails. It was cozy, dimly lit and the ambiance was spot on for what you'd want in a speakeasy. We split the tartare, pork terrine, and artichokes au gratin and two of their cocktail specials. Everything was fatty, creamy, and decadent - great for a cold winter day! Already planning my trip back but this time I'll make reservations!

This is a great place with excellent food. We were visiting Charlottesville for a week and it was the best meal we had the entire stay. The people, service and atmosphere were amazing. Wish I had a place like this close to home. I highly recommend. Look for the light in the alley and make reservations, you won't be disappointed.

A little tricky to find this place, but you literally go into the alley and it's the place with the light on top. Up a stairwell and voila! It's a great date night spot, pretty spacious and doesn't feel cramped. Nice ambiance. We ordered the beef marrow (comes with 4 escargot on top), beef tartare, salmon tartare (yes - we love tartare!), spiced broccolini (surprisingly good!) and the spicy honey glazed duck breast. My favorites were the tartares and the broccolini. The duck breast was just okay. Great customer service and friendly staff.

A great experience, unique flavors that pair well together. The pork belly was also great

Looking for a quiet place to gather with 8 to 10 friends. Wondering if this place might suit?

We had 5:30pm reservations and were seated immediately. The host was warm, acknowledged the occasion, and honored my request for a quieter table by placing us in a bay-window nook. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The space echoed so badly we could barely hear each other, and the setting sun combined with the AC being accidentally turned off made the area feel like a sauna. Our water glasses were filled within minutes, so we thought service would be smooth. Instead, we sat for another 15 minutes before anyone greeted us--while a table seated after us was helped promptly and served at a noticeably faster pace. I understand large parties require attention (there was a group of 10-12 nearby), but as a former server myself, I've never allowed smaller tables to feel forgotten. When our server, Lucian (sp?), finally arrived, we immediately placed drink and appetizer orders because we were already starving. The appetizers came out about 20 minutes later--still before our drinks. The brussels sprouts were excellent and worth the wait. The biscuit basket was good, though the butter-to-biscuit ratio felt off, and the apple butter was surprisingly delicious. Our entrées didn't arrive until at least 45 minutes after that. The pacing was simply poor, and we consistently felt like an afterthought. While our server was polite, he didn't initiate conversation, offer suggestions, mention happy hour, or acknowledge our daughter's birthday. He didn't even suggest dessert. Meanwhile, the six-top behind us--seated well after we were--was wrapping up their meal as ours was just being served. The food presentation was beautiful. The pot roast, however, was underwhelming. It lacked seasoning and sauce, and the vegetables were forgettable--very few potatoes, no carrots. "Not your normal pot roast" was accurate, but not in a good way. The shrimp and grits were excellent, with great seasoning and a flavorful sauce. The salmon was moist and well-prepared, though it still had a few scales on the end of the filet. Once we finished eating, we again waited for our server to return. We eventually had to wave him down for boxes and again to request the check. Parking in the back was convenient early in the evening, though I imagine it becomes difficult later. Would we return? Unfortunately, probably not. We've been treated better, served more efficiently, and appreciated more fully at other restaurants--including one almost directly across the street. What we hoped would be a memorable celebration ended up feeling ho-hum at a high price--too high for the experience we received.

They neither responded to my email nor the review with any sort of explanation or apology which suggests that they don't really care. So I'll share this on Yelp too so others are aware of their poor customer service. We visited this restaurant with a group of seven and were excited to try it, especially because the outdoor seating area looked like a great spot for dinner. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being very disappointing. Service was extremely slow and disorganized from the start. About 15 minutes after ordering, a different waitress brought food to our table that we hadn't ordered, then quickly took it away without much explanation. From there, things only got worse. Our meals came out slowly over the course of 30-45 minutes, just one or two plates at a time, with no communication about the delays. Our four-year-old waited nearly 45 minutes for a simple order of fish sticks. Even basic service was lacking. We had to ask multiple times for something as simple as an apple juice refill, and it still took far too long to arrive. Toward the end of the meal, our waitress stopped checking on our table altogether, which made it difficult to order dessert. The food itself was pretty good, which is the only reason this isn't a one-star review. However, the poor service and lack of attentiveness completely overshadowed the experience. Overall, it was frustrating and disappointing, and we don't plan to return.

We began with very well crafted cocktails and I had the most delightful mocktail, an Unlit Gimlet; so bright and fresh and the pink peppercorn garnish was the perfect counter to the sweet. So enjoyed our pastas from the Bolognese, the Carbonara, the Raucci, and the Primaverili (a perfect bite of spring green). Of the four, our table's favorite was the capellini gamberi Raucci but I wouldn't hesitate to order any of our selections. Sides of roasted fennel with oranges (the best fennel I've had) and the cauliflower were beautifully done. Appetizers enjoyed were the Roman artichokes, bread and olive oil, and olives. When dining here, I enjoy the superbly prepared food, a very high level of attention and a cozy, classy and quaint atmosphere. The restaurant is small but the food taste is large. Before I describe my courses, there were many bonus bites, starting with an amuse bouche and then other small and wonderful taste surprises between the courses. Had the small, bite-size food gifts been a full course, I would have been quite content. For example, one plate of small tasty delights had 5 items to enjoy. That little dishes included quail egg, beet, steak tartar, stuffed corn cakes, avocado mousse and corn jam and some creamy pistachio. There was also the delicate and frothy egg yolk with a ginger and carrot salad. I was also given a surprise small portion of delectable soup, which was root vegetable-based with a truffle cream dollop on top. I enjoyed the carrot and rich parsnip flavors in that soup. Of course, there was some fresh warm bread with a yummy, garlicky butter. i had a glass of champagne whcih had a light, clean grassy taste with an nice acidic bitterness. My three courses on the Prix Fixe menu started with the Tagliatelle aux fruits de mer parfumee a la truffle. This seafood pasta dish, with a truffle accent, was a wonderful balance between the earthy flavor and the slightly sweet and perfectly-seared scallops. The next course was a Bourride de fruits de mer. This dish is a seafood stew in a tomato soup. As usual, the flavor combination is so sublime and so interesting on the tongue. The soup arrived with a slice of flavorful garlic bread, perched above the bowl which was holding fresh seafood on the surface. The final course was La bombe au chocolat. This is a rich dark chocolate and raspberry mousse in a deep hot chocolate sauce. Of course, the chef was so kind in sending out another bonus dish with a type of of kouign-amann, a wonderfully tasty lime tart and yummy chocolate truffles in the center.
