My wife and I drove down to Amboy on an adventure date and had been told by a friend that this was a place we needed to visit. First off make a reservation. We drove from Mankato, it is a quaint place and doesn't have a lot of extra space but it is adorable. We called when we got there and they snuck us in. Very friendly people and loved the wood stove inside. We had chicken nachos and little best chicken on nachos I've ever had. I had a bleu cheese and cheddar bison burger my wife had a cheeseburger and cottage fries. Portion sizes looked small but were deceiving they were filling and delicious! They have many other options, we plan to go for breakfast sometime in the future. Definitely will be back. read more

We found this place to be a quaint little stop while driving through southern Minnesota. The staff was friendly and the food was excellent. My wife and daughter loved the Swedish pancakes with fruit. I read about this in a Mankato magazine and we drove the half hour south cause we love these places. It is unusual in some ways. We got to sit at an actual 60's type kitchen table. I got the basic breakfast. Eggs OE were unusually folded, yet perfectly OE. Sausage patty was delicious. You get a bowl of fresh fruit first. Some potato wedges replaced homefries/hashbrowns that they were out of. Basil ordered a ham and swiss quiche. This led to a mystery that could be in one of my books. We got there at 9:30, a party of 3 followed 2 or all 3 got quiche. I ordered a piece as soon as I tasted it. They open at 9. I didn't get a piece cause they were out. Either they used yesterdays up or didn't make an extra for today. The only reason I'm bringing this up is because it's the best damn one I've had in a restaurant in MN. It comes with an unusual piece of toast, thick and full of dried fruit. In a place that serves scratch ingredients, I'm surprised that they don't carry pure maple syrup. A place like this, that takes you back in time, makes you believe the town actually lives in the past. I can't wait to go back next year. read more

Had dinner here Tuesday night, thanks to my Mankato friends....I've NEVER even heard of Amboy!! We had the vegetarian burger, Smothered Butternut Squash (looked AMAZING!), I had a Red Cow Burger, California style and we also ordered a bread plate. All was wonderful!! Just a small cottage and there was only two other tables, so it was quiet. I like the atmosphere, they didn't go with a "theme" it's just randomness on the walls. :) The bathroom they have random crafts & such for sale. I really liked the food, atmosphere & service. I sure hope this is the same place I remember. I was a campaign staffer for the DFL in 2002, and I would structure my weeks around getting to the Cottage Cafe. There sure weren't many votes to drum up in Amboy, but it was always worth the trip. The Red Cow burgers were delicious, the coffee ample, and the soups... oh, the soups. Honestly, I had the best split pea and ham soup of my life there. The woman who started the place had this great little trick: she sold hand-potted ceramic mugs, personalized, to anybody who would invest something like $150 in the restaurant in the beginning, and then they would get free coffee out of their mug for life. The Olive Chicken with raisins over linguine was a surprising combination of flavors. Save room for the homemade bread puddings (raspberry was scrumptious!) Be sure to bring your own beer or wine! I'm so glad I found this place... it's easily worth the 30-min drive from Mankato. I've only been there for breakfast, but the lunch and dinner menu looks great too. All kinds of fresh-baked breads, rolls and pastries, and great cooked food too. One cool little aside: for kids during breakfast, they'll make a pancake in the shape of animals or whatever else you want... and the design is a lot more intricate than you'd think. The only downside: the place is small. We've been lucky, and haven't had to wait, but they're willing to take reservations if you call ahead. read more

They make everything homemade- breads are all from scratch and they use ingredients that are uber fresh and local. I was so surprised to find this here in Amboy. A place like this cooks up food that you expect in a 5 star restaurant in Europe. This place was recommended to me by a co-worker. The drive was more than worth it. The ambiance makes you feel like someone invited you into their home. The food was nothing short of spectacular. The german smoked pork chop (german style) was one of the best pork dishes I've ever had. You can tell they really take pride in the food they are serving. They don't serve alcohol but they will let you bring your own alcohol with no corkage fee. read more
