The food was absolutely top-notch, and everything came out fresh and flavorful: * Chicken Burger: This came on a ciabatta bread along with coleslaw and the most amazing aioli sauce. It was incredibly juicy, warm, and flavorful. * Clam Chowder & Local Beet Salad: Both of these dishes were outstanding. The clam chowder was rich and comforting. The Local Beet Salad features organic seasonal greens, organic beets, local goat cheese, sunflower seeds, a balsamic reduction, and a citrus vinaigrette--it was top-notch and incredibly fresh. * Kids' Chicken Nuggets: My son got this from the kids' menu, which comes with a side of ranch and a generous portion of crispy fries that he really enjoyed. * Cajun Alfredo Pasta: My daughter ordered the rice pasta version of this dish, which features a creamy Cajun spiced sauce and garden herbs, making it a wonderful, flavorful gluten-free pasta option. * Blackberry Cobbler & Chocolate Ice Cream: For dessert, we shared the cobbler made with Marion blackberries and a sweet cinnamon crumble topping. I stayed here while exploring the Redwood Coast and had a nice time checking out this town. Things that I enjoyed doing here were hiking the Trinidad Head Trail Loop by the Lighthouse, early morning walks on the beach, and checking out some local art galleries. My ravioli was salty due to the amount of capers, but still ok. However, I was very disappointed with our takeout dessert. We ordered crème brûlée to go, and it was packed in small boxes that we didn't open right away. When we arrived at our Airbnb just 8 minutes later, we discovered it was not properly placed in a sealed container (like an aluminum one, as expected). Instead, it was sitting directly inside the box, which was unhygienic and unacceptable. Unfortunately, we had to throw it away. I hope the restaurant takes more care in the future when packaging food to go. This detail really matters and impacts the overall experience.

While it's not the motel's fault that some guests lack basic etiquette, a divider or barrier would go a long way in giving guests a bit more privacy. Top notch hospitality! Legend has it that the Tsu-rai Indians once used this beach as part of their summer camp. One day, a young warrior launched his canoe into the cold waters of the beach (Northern California beaches do not have warm water even in summertime!). He never returned and his grandmother waited so patiently for him on the beach that eventually, the gods took pity on her and turned her into a rock. You really can see her - sitting, huddled up, looking out to sea, and even her hair - in a bun on the back of her head. The "bun" even has some succulent plants growing out of it. You really don't have to use much of your imagination to see this striking image. Definitely worth a trip for some cool, northern California local flavor.

Just a few minutes south of Orick, CA is Stone Lagoon, a protected wetlands area nestled next to…read morethe 101 where the Pacific meets the NorCal redwood forests. A nondescript entrance off the 101 leads down to a beautifully empty sandy beach. Rocky outcroppings create a beautiful view, and beachcombers and driftwood hunters can find all sorts of treasures here. A long natural sand spit protects the lagoon (and the aptly named larger Big Lagoon to the south) and at certain times of the year, this is a great place to see all sorts of wading and shore birds, along with ospreys, pinnipeds, and occasionally otters. We enjoyed a little picnic here on the windswept beach, and walked around a little with the kids. We had the place to ourselves... always surprises me as a SoCal kid.

My family and I have stayed at the View Crest at least three or four times in the past and have…read morealways found it welcoming and pleasant. Our daughter is now grown up, so for the first time in nineteen years my wife and I were able to get away on our own for an anniversary vacation. In the past, we usually ended up in the fourth unit-- which is perfect for families of three-- but this time we stayed in the ninth unit, which has a wonderful jet sauna, a VERY comfortable king bed, a large kitchen area, and a very nice couch for hanging out after a long day beach combing or wandering in the redwoods. Every time we have stayed at the View Crest, the staff has always been friendly and accommodating and this visit continued that trend. I should add that the lodge is located very near to the redwood tree parks (my favorite being Prairie Creek), Su-Meg State Park, and Trinidad State Beach-- all of which makes for many days of enjoyable hiking and wandering. My only complaint about the View Crest is all their units are often completely booked! We look forward to our next stay.
