I'm a bit surprised by the negative reviews, I've had only positive experiences. Having bought shirts, sweaters, and sport coats from Andover Shop, all are of outstanding quality. Furthermore, I've always received highly knowledgeable, precise service. For example, one shirt I wanted to purchase was full cut and they advised me not to buy the item because the fit wasn't right. Few shops today are so high integrity, most prefer the quick sale. The prices are not that high when you factor in the quality of the items and the expected number of uses: the value proposition shouldn't be compared against fast fashion. read more

I was in the Andover store in August and found the quality of the shirts not up to other high quality outlets such as David Donahue. I expect better cotton shirts to be thicker material and finely trimmed. Also while there I checked out the woolen material for suits - just not quality. It's funny; I've read a few of these reviews about the poor service, condescending looks, and arrogance in this shop . I've been in five or six times over the last 25 years or so, and have never been treated with anything less than complete courtesy... at the most I chatted with some of the staff about men's clothes and accessories, and they waxing verbal for a good 15 to 20 minutes. Let the record show that I'm often dressed in a pretty menacing sort of manner: boots, jeans, shaved head, tattoos in foolish places, etc. I'm also uneducated beyond high school. Never have I been treated with anything less than courtesy at the Andover Shop. I've always had my questions answered politely, i've had good advice about neckwear and shirting, and I've never felt as though I was being watched or looked down upon. The clothes... beautiful ties, shirts; Shetland wool items; incredible outerwear... even though I don't prefer their house cut, their sportcoat and blazers are beautiful(I'm more of a 3-roll-2, patch pocket, and hook vent guy). Gorgeous tweeds and other fabrics make up an incredible selection of off the rail and made to measure garments. I'm sorry for the folks who had a bad experience here. read more

In the modern age where everything can be had online and with no regard to the people who are behind it, it's refreshing and nice to see places like the Andover Shop have a physical presence in the deluge of e-commerce sites. Where fast fashion has become the trend in recent years, the Andover Shop strives to keep craftsmanship, tradition, and heritage alive. A lot of their items command a premium, but don't let that scare you off. If you're interested but not yet ready to make a purchase, you won't be treated any different. Entering in, you're greeted by the staff here who have a wealth of knowledge and experience. If you're into menswear, the list of places where they've been at previously will be sure to excite you. I was looking around for places to get a Brooks Brothers navy blazer tailored, and on my way, thought I would stop in and see what it was like. Seeing the fit and cut of their jackets, I asked if they could accomodate me and it couldn't have been an easier interaction. It does take some time to finish, but all good things come to those that wait. In recent years I've also become quite fond of Alden shoes, and luckily the Andover shop is one of the few stores in the greater Boston area theat carries them. I'll definitely be back to see some of their special make ups in person! Overall, this is one of my favorite stores to have visited in Boston. Great old menswear store in the heart of Cambridge. The front entry is flooded in natural light which complements the nicely organized neck ties to the right, sweaters neatly arranged on the left, and other various accessories encompassing the space. Up the short stair leads the shopper to a carpeted area where he will find the haberdasher holding court. Fine shirtings, suits and sport coats are the delights to be found on the elevated level. Although some claim to have been treated poorly here, my experience was quite different. The gentleman helped me pick out a shirt, "do you like a check or a stripe?", and regaled me with various tidbits of knowledge. If you appreciate well-made clothing in good taste and are willing to part ways with a respectable amount of cash this place will delight you. read more

This was one of the worst shopping experiences I have ever had. I went in with my father looking for some nice mens clothing and we were treated as though we might shoplift at any moment. They would not stop staring at us. The employee offered up one piece of clothing, which my father politely declined. Later, my father asked for a recommendation of what to wear to an upcoming event and the employee barked "the blue blazer I just tried to sell you" As we left, I said "have a nice evening" and he did not even answer me. First of all, this is a really cool store--really small space crammed with beautiful clothes. But the service was incredibly bad, to the point where my friend and I walked out, looked at each other, and said "What the fuck was that?" I've never experienced anything like it. My friend wanted to drop by since he was looking for a particular shirt, and the staff was incredibly unhelpful. There were a few people standing around sullenly when we entered, but no one offered to help. My friend talked to an employee, said he was looking for a particular shirt in a certain size. The employee said he'd help look for it and just... didn't. Instead, he stood around, not saying anything, staring intently at us. It was really, really uncomfortable. I'll mention at this point that both my friend and I are attractive, nicely-dressed young adults--we don't exactly give off an "I'm about to grab a bunch of clothing and sprint out the door" vibe, but the employee seemed like he expected us to shoplift at any moment. It was bizarre. We both felt so weird that my friend left quickly without buying anything, despite going out of his way to visit the store. I should mention that my friend said he'd been here before, and had a really great experience. I don't know what happened this time, but I've never encountered such a rude employee--I was kind of tempted to walk back in and ask him what his problem was. It was a one star experience, but I'm adding another because the store itself was lovely. read more

Unhelpful, arrogant, condescending, bad business skills. I made it clear that I'd be a repeat customer if he offered to simply take my measurements. He made up an excuse the measurements are not universal, which is ridiculous. He didn't want my business so he won't have it. Moreover, I'm a student at Harvard. Whether we like it or not, my classmates and I have high-end fashion needs & often talk about where to go. Going out of my way to tell all my friends not to go there. read more

Okay, so I'm a girl writing a review for a place that is just for boys. Fair enough. I came in with a boy whose thighs are to big from biking everywhere while having a tiny waist any girl would be jealous of. These characteristics make pants-shopping very painfully long and for the most part impossible. So the decision was made to get custom dress pants. We walk in. There are three older guys there. We explain the issue, one of them offers a pair of ready made pants to try on. Boy tries them on and I start discussing with one of the guys what are the general problems and how he wants to have his pants fit. He notes the measurements, how the fit should look like, and then we pick out the color. The advice there is great, they ask what color/style of shoes said boy usually wears and what tops he prefers. Based on the responses they recommend which colors look good and which ones are very finicky. While the boy is changing I strike up a conversation about inseams and pleats. Very impressed with what I hear, these guys know about inseams, the front and the back one. As I asked about corduroy, not having seen any in the store, suddenly I see three packs of swatches of the most fabulous corduroy I've ever felt up. Just then, the boy walks out of the changing room, sees the corduroy, and suddenly there are two perverts feeling up the angelic fabric. Speaking of fabric, beside the inappropriate corduroy, they have every other kind of pant fabric you could want. From tropical wool, to heavy check wool, to seersucker, and yes they even have part cashmere part cotton corduroy in bright red. They also carry a pretty wide selection of ready made pants, colorful socks, ties and bow ties. There are button down shirts (mainly stripes and checks on white) and polos (variety of colors). The sweaters are VERY nice, bright and subdued colors with content ranging from merino to cashmere, to the fabulous silk cashmere blend. Pricing wise: Ready made pants are ~$125ish and up, custom are $250 (it takes them about four weeks to make them, but in the end the boy looked very good, and you can never put a price on that). Not sure about everything else, but I assume $125+ based on the quality, color, and fabric content. My only quarrel with them is that they don't make women's suits. Otherwise they are perfect if you're want to create a particular look or if you are a boy/man with a body that does not look good in ready made pants or both. Agree with the others who said the service sucked. When I'm not at work, I tend to dress like a "regular dude", which the floor sales guy took as an invitation to eyeball me like I was an imminent shoplifting threat, or at the very least like I was someone who had no intention of buying anything. (Spoiler alert: I had every intention of buying a bunch of stuff.) Anyway, after he spent a good 10 minutes verbally fellating some Harvard professor type, he was nice enough to curtly answer a couple of my questions, with the subtext to his answers being "Get the f out of my store." So if you're not some overtly preppy Skull and Bones finals club douche or tweedy professor type, don't bother with this place. They don't want your kind in there. Besides, Drinkwater's in Porter Sq. is one T stop away and has the same stuff (plus more), and their staff is actually friendly and helpful no matter what you look like. read more

They may have nice clothes, but their service was absolutely terrible. I am a 20-something female, and just needed to get measured for a few items, a men's kilt (I play in a bagpipe band) and a dress. I tried every other store first, but all the tailors near Harvard square apparently scheduled their vacations together. As a last resort I went in to the Andover Shop. There were several tailors standing there, and so I approached and asked if anyone could measure me. I was immediately berated by all of them, saying no of course they wouldn't measure me and they wouldn't even have the slightest idea where to begin. Fine, I get that you don't measure for dresses. But I need a men's kilt, so I need measurements as though I was a man. I asked if they would be willing to at least do that. This request they again refused in an unnecessarily rude manor. I conceded to the fact that they would not help me, so I politely asked for a recommendation for where I could go that would have a women's tailor that could help me. All I got was more rude comments from all of them, and a refusal to help me or make a suggestion. I am not used to being berated my a group of men, so they really got to me. I left the store in tears. It was truly a horrible experience. I can not say strongly enough, do not go in to this shop! The clothes are not worth dealing with the horrible people. read more

This is a great store. You could buy almost anything here and look good, and on the off chance you erred in something you pick up, the tactful staff is low key but extremely knowledgable and will set you right. They have a wide selection in such a small space. The front of the store is worth an ogle next time you pass by--more affordable items like ties, scarves, and some very irreverent socks are stacked up front with the accessories and sweaters you can browse, often in colorful and luxuriant piles. Up the stairs and further back, fabrics for made to measure items lined the left wall, with suits, jackets, and outerwear on the right. The range allows you to either pick up a striking and reasonably priced gift ($25-100) to sharpen a man's wardrobe or splurge on a big ticket item for yourself ($1000 and up). If you're at a loss, ask for help, the guys there are very helpful. read more

I saw this place on Tomboy Style so I wanted to check it out during a work trip. It is a menswear store that sells ready-made professional attire e.g. shirts, pants, and suits, but also creates custom-made items. They also sell more affordable ties, cufflinks, suspenders, and belts. You can get a preppy woven belt with lobster print or some other New England-y decor. The clientele was mostly older white males, but it'd be great for more young men to dress up, take pride in their appearance, and buy quality over quantity. It won't be cheap, but I bet it'll last a lot longer than that thing you found at the Gap. Get your crispy, natty style here! read more

I totally agree with Steve W., David D., Katie F. and Ava H.. I have been a customer at the Andover location for about 30 years; however, their total disregard of solid, longstanding relationships and arrogance, will definitely be their downfall! The problem that I had with them could have been easily solved; nevertheless, they prefer to look only at short term profits. I have owned my own business for 25 years, and always go out of my way to keep customers satisfied, but they don't give a crap. They should remember the old adage: "Bulls and bears survive, and PIGS get slaughtered". Beware! read more

The Andover Shop is a wonderful men's clothing store with locations in Cambridge and Andover, Massachusetts. The Cambridge branch is a very small shop. If you like J. Press, Cable Car Clothiers, the old Brooks Brothers or the shops along Jermyn Street in London, you probably will like the Andover Shop. I have been buying my clothes from them for thirty years. Their house style is an upscale east coast Ivy League flavor with a bit of English flair. The Andover Shop sells and makes clothes that will look right in finance, law, academia or business. Their shirts, ties, bow ties, sweaters, ready-made trousers, sport coats and suits cannot be found elsewhere. They also offer a made-to-measure clothing and their fabrics are spectacular, especially the tweeds. While not inexpensive, their clothes last--I have shirts, ties, and jackets from them that are 10-15 years old and still look great. I would add that some of the very negative Yelp reviews strike me as unfair and insecure. I have always found the staff to be approachable, helpful and knowledgeable. I stopped by the Cambridge store with my wife and our twin nine-year-old boys, and Larry and the other member of the staff could not have been nicer to my family. read more
