Just Awful!! We needed a pet friendly hotel NOW, and chose this dump, unfortunately! We were in unit #2 on a Tuesday night and spent $162. The pictures will explain a lot. We are not travelers who need a lot of accommodations or fluff, but clean and good working order, yes. Horrifying. We should have said something when we showed up, but, like what, "Can you help us find another property tonight?" Looking back, we probably should have said we couldn't stay here and demanded our money back? but we had just picked up our food-to-go, 2 dogs, and plans to meet friends in Julian the next morning... The TV (from 1975) only had 2 working channels, the comforter freaked me out and I tried not to let it touch my face. The bed was fine. The bath towels were nice, but we couldn't bear the thought of getting in the shower...see photos. When we left the next morning and I submitted the key, the guy was very friendly...I paused for a minute and wondered where to start (because he never asked me , "How was my stay?" I was momentarily mute...my fault. I cannot believe the City of Julian, BBB, or agency who approves ratings has seen Unit #2. read more

We came up to Julian for the weekend to visit the California Wolf Center/ Conservation. We decided to stay at the Apple tree Inn because it was close to town and everything we wanted to visit. The rooms were very tidy and comfortable. We had a tv that had Netflix and Hulu, so it was perfect for my toddler and I. There is a pizza bar directly across the street which was super convenient. It was nice and quiet and we slept great here. It is quite affordable compared to some of the other inns in the area and had everything we needed. The manager and innkeeper are extremely prompt in responding to your needs. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely return for future stays up in Julian. I've read some rather harsh reviews from other guests, it seems the inn has tried to update and improve upon past issues. read more

The Apple tree Inn in Julian CA. Looks nice with their online Ad. I recently reserved a 2 night stay. I was notified my father was having issues in San Diego and had to cancel my reservations. I cancelled in person to the kid working in the office at the Apple tree Inn. He told me he would cancel on his end but for me to contact expedia to cancel. When I got back to San Diego I got my credit card bill and was charged for both nights. Never will I ever go back to the Apple tree Inn ever again. Thru Expedia I (when making the reservations) purchased the hotel insurance too. Expedia forwarded me to their "Insurance" and the phone rang 3 times...and they hung up on me. I called expedia back and it rings 3 times and hangs up on me. Do not use expedia and do not go to the Apple tree inn. Cost me over $400.00 for a room I never set foot into. read more

My brother went here for a special stay to celebrate with friends he's getting married. Very quite visit they just love the town and wanted to stay close by so they could eat at their best spots. After it was time to unwind they went to the suit they had reserved for the evening. They brought a small speaker for music. Once the manger told them it was too loud they said so sorry we will turn it off. They switched to a lab top! And then received texts from the manger on duty saying they are going to call the cops because of how loud the music was still. The tv they have in the room is louder than a lab top. They asked for the money back because they decided this isn't the place to unwind at. They refused to give back the money even though they have only been in the room for such a short period of time. I hope no one else gets treated like this on such a special weekend and I will be telling people about how rude the staff was and not to give their money to such a place. We loved this place! Sure its just a Motel but its really clean, the beds are great and the heater worked great! Hot water was, well HOT! . One had a little table, the other a Luggage stand. Both had a Fridge. Room was quite too. A 100 foot walk and your at California Mountain Bakery and the Wynola Pizza and Bistro. The Inn is about 3 miles from Julian and 35 from the Ranger station on Hwy 78 in Ocotillo wells or Borrego Springs. We went an Saw the Mud Caves off of S-2 plus a bunch of cool things to see in The Anza Borrego State park. Band was great at the Bistro! read more

Stayed here while my husband did some of his hikes for his 6 pack of peaks. Our room was the upstairs 1 bedroom. It was perfect. Cute little quiet and quaint. Plenty of pace to eat just steps away. And I got to bird watch from the windows. Had the best nights sleep in a long time. The queen bed was absolutely perfect and comfortable. Wish I'd checked the mattress tags so I could sleep this well at home. Will definitely stay again. read more

If you are reading this after July 15, 2018, ignore all the bad reviews. The renovations seem to be 95% to 98% complete and the Apple Tree Inn is great! My family and I recently stayed in room 19 (a suite) for two nights during a weekend getaway to Julian. The suite was clean and fresh. Everything looked brand-new. The simple, clean decor was comfortable and relaxing. The TVs (both in the living room and bedroom) had an extensive list of cable channels that came in crystal clear. The two queen beds were some of the most comfortable I have ever slept on. The kitchen was definitely nicer than mine at home and it was stocked with all the basic tools you might need to cook for a week. The bathroom, although small, was clean and new and everything worked perfectly. All the windows had nice, new blinds and there was great air conditioning. There was a dryer in the unit, but not a washing machine. I'm not sure why, but that didn't matter us since we were only staying two days. There's only two things that could have been improved. One was the closet in the bedroom. The doors were standing inside the closet, not attached. I think that's a super small thing given how great the rest of the room was. But, they should reattach the doors. Two, the bathroom toiletries, kitchen soap, etc. should have been set out so we could see them. We eventually found them, but it required a bit of a hunt. All-in-all, this is a great place and Alex (at the front desk) was pleasant and helpful. read more

We drove to Julian, for a small getaway! The place is super cute! Very clean! Upgraded. Decorative! The manager, Jamal was very accommodating! We had a very relaxing evening, watching Netflix (even the AC, overhead fan, and light, can be operated by remote control)! The property has very lush trees. You can just open your door and take a fresh forest breath!! They even have many different flavors of Keurig, in addition to the complimentary bottles of water! read more

I purchased a 3-night stay at Farmhouse for my family for Thanksgiving - so we could be together (somewhere besides home) and still cook our meals. The farmhouse is cute, quaint but very old/outdated. The windows rattle in their wooden sills with any slight gust of wind. The one shower that was operable has the standard 1950's layout not comfortable for anyone over 5.5 feet tall. I would have rated this location 4 stars if these were the only issues. The innkeeper was responsive to requests. He answered via text quickly and brought supplies to our front door. However, there is no drinkable water on the property!! I was not informed until my check in was confirmed that this was an issue. Communication is key, especially the week of a major holiday! Imagine for a moment cooking a turkey without clean running water, sanitizing dishes, brushing your teeth, giving your kids a bath! I had to buy paper plates to avoid using water. I had to buy food instead of cooking the food I brought to prepare for the other days we were there. And we all had to share the one shower. I would have chosen NOT to stay at this property had I known, and I believe that it was intentionally kept from me so that I would not have a choice. There was a notice from February 2020 about the water. There are other reviews I'm finding who also experienced no drinking water. This leads me to believe in a chronic problem - and the issue SHOULD have been communicated to all guests prior to their check in. I shared with the innkeeper my strong dissatisfaction with the conditions. While he was empathetic and cordial, the 'Booker' didn't seem to be as they offered me a pretty insignificant refund. Even after some negotiations, the 'Booker' refused to compensate even one night of my stay. Disappointed. read more

The hotel was clean and well cared for. There was a severe need for more vertical spaces. There was no place to put your suitcase. Also no available space in the bathroom to put anything down. Another problem was there were no chairs in the room. You had to sit on the bed or the floor. Most of all, there were no attendants on site. They do everything by text. So, when the people in the next room were yelling at each other one evening, there was no one on site to handle it. read more

It seemed like a great facility online, so we made a reservation using Booking.com for several nights to explore the area around Julian and side trips into nearby desert. The clerk could not find our reservation when we arrived but got us into a room after swiping credit card. Facility is older with outdated bathroom fixtures and no 3-prong plugs, hard to charge phones etc. Room was very large with comfortable bed. No A/C controls, just a board on the floor that said "move for cooling" and it seemed to work after about 3 hours. Woke up freezing at 1am so covered the vent agin. Very odd set up for HVAC. Pool was very nice after long day of adventures, but the filter system was not working and pool really needed cleaning - but it was cool water and counteracted the 89° temps outside! No maid service in the 3 days we stayed, beds never made, trash filled, and we had to go to office to get exchange of room and pool towels. No service and front desk door was locked several times we tried to ask a question and no one around. I asked for a receipt at check out as we never actually saw a bill or rate at check in, and clerk said the company would e-mail it to me. I will have to check and see if advertised rate of $92 is was charged. Funky place, just an average old motel. read more

We stayed here with our dog and had a wonderful time. The Inn is quiet, peaceful, and perfectly located for the area. It's just a 5 minute drive from the main town and 15 minutes from Lake Cuyamaca. Our room was newly renovated with beautiful amenities. The bed was clean and comfortable, and we enjoyed the fresh mountain air and serene landscape. Check in and check out was really easy. They text you when your room is ready and provide you with the code to the lockbox with your room keys right outside your room. First time I've checked in that way, and it was great. We didn't have to wait in a line in a lobby or anything like that. We'll define back for another relaxing, beautiful weekend getaway! read more

Absolutely loved this stay and wished we could have stayed longer ! Everyone we met as far as the staff was super friendly . The self check in option was really convenient too and they accommodated all our needs . You can tell it's family owned and they care about their guest . I would come back in a heart beat. Location is great and right next to two restaurants plus super close to Julian station with Julian's hard cider . Another plus is that this hotel is dog friendly so it was awesome being able to take our pup with us on a family trip up to Julian . Will definitely be returning ! Geez, so many of the other reviews say "it is great for what it is" then give it 1 or 2 stars?! Stayed one night to see a friend's band play at the restaurant across the street. Read reviews (maybe on TripAdvisor) that the pillows sucked, so we brought out own. Only had to drive up from San Diego, in our own car without luggage, so that was OK (and actually, the room we got had OK pillows, but the guy at the desk said not all rooms had been upgraded.) It was clean, convenient, (relatively) cheap. Yes the furniture is 70s and pink is not my favorite color but this is the back country. If you are expecting luxury then you are in the wrong place! We don't watch TV so not sure about coverage, but all in all this was a nice clean place that perfectly fit our needs. Only reason 4 instead of 5 stars is I do save 5 stars for luxury accomplished! read more

Basic rooms close to Julian that'll do if you don't like camping or spending a lot of money. The front desk staff are great-extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms have a bed, small TV and a small bathroom. Very basic but they get the job done. They're a bit dark though, and honestly a bit creepy. But that could be just because I'm used to city lights. It's right off the 78 (super convenient) and has this quaint old-timey charm to it. Try it out and get some photos next to the sign--this really fits in with an authentic weekend getaway to Julian. read more

This hotel is not a place I would stay at again - EVER. We were in town in June 2015 for a wedding and originally planned to stay for 3 nights, but change to 1 night well before the trip...Best decision ever! From the outside the place looks charming but well worn. Cute rustic sign and pool area. Stepping into the "check in" area found me standing in an unkept living area. The owner was very friendly and helpful. They do love their pets as evidence by the cat eating canned food on the floor next to the check in desk. Our room was a nightmare. Greeted with a stinky musk smell and complete furnishings that are at least 30-40 years old and showing it. We were also greeted by ANTS! They were pretty much everywhere. On our coffee table. In the bathroom. I seriously even had one on my leg when I was in bed. Both my 4 year old son and I were constantly killing them or brushing them off our legs. And this wasn't the only room with them. We had 4 other families staying here for the same wedding that shared the same experience. Like other reviewers said, the walls are paper thin. We got to listen to some trashy couple get drunk and into a fight then after they were done the rest of the night listening to the woman puking her guts out. Don't stay there when it's hot either! It was boiling when we stayed and the owner turns off the complex's AC at night time. Why, I have no idea. We slept in a sauna that night. No fan in our room although others had one but we didn't know until the morning. Basically, we left immediately the next morning and will never return to the Juilian area. This hotel needs major work. And at $120 a night, you are being cheated compared to your standard hotel accommodations. Like another said - Bates Motel comes to mind. Honestly, for my wife and I, we would have preferred the camping option to this hotel as that would have been cleaner - and we have a 1 year old and 4 year old. You've been warned. Didn't realize it was 3 miles off the main drag, old and outdated with no amenities and plumbing awful (waited about a year for hot water.) The girl who checked me in was sweet and the cable TV was nice but yeah perfect place to be murdered and at $162 a night, i was clearly robbed. Stay elsewhere. read more

We loved this place!!! I was skeptical because of previous reviews, but it was completely updated and we were very pleased!! It was so quaint and our room was exceptionally comfortable. I love that their was a ceiling fan in the room and it was a very clean environment. I felt like I was staying at a friends house in the country. The bed was amazingly comfortable as well. We stayed in room 15. We ate at the restaurant next door which had amazing food!! We also had our golden retriever with us and she was comfy too!! I stayed in the recently renovated Apple Tree Inn for one night the weekend of 8/25/18. The room was bright and clean. The bed was comfortable. The shower was clean and had good water pressure. So, why only four stars? 1) No hair dryer. 2) No conditioner with the toiletries supplied. 3) The curtains are not light blocking so a LOT of light came in during sunrise in the morning. When I went to the front desk to see whether I was just missing a hair dryer, there was a sign on the door and a number to call. This makes sense as I assume it is a small staff, and it was somewhat early on a Sunday morning. However, no one answered the number when I called it. So, I wasn't happy about having to leave with wet hair. I'd be happy to lay my head here again, but I'd bring the hair dryer and conditioner from home! read more

Okay so first of all I want to acknowledge the young guy working at the front desk was very nice. And very apologetic. What was he apologizing about you ask? Well here ya go... we live in ramona. Just wanted a little getaway for the night. The location was great. In the heart of Julian, close to everything. BUT we gotthere at 4:30 with our dogs in the car with us. Check in was supposed to be 3, we got there and waited another hour for the room to be ready and cleaned. Which in itself is kinda gross. But the room did end up pretty clean for our stay. The other couple that was in the office waiting with me said they came from far away and paid for early check in that morning and that their whole family was there and had to wait since 12!!! For their room, it was 5:20pm at the time she told me this! I was saddened for them. We almost just left and went home, we were sitting in our car for over an hour waiting for our room with our dogs in the car as well. When we finally got our room it was not impressive. Unfinished decor and door frames. The cleaner ended up leaving their cleaning cart a foot away from our door for our entire stay. We had to walk around boxes and other furniture out in the walk way outside to stay out of the rain. It was ridiculous. Once it came time to go to bed there was paper curtains so the light from the porch light that we couldn't turn off was shining through all night. We did not sleep good AT ALL!! By 6:30 am we were up and couldn't sleep due to the light shining in. Everything about the experience was bad, so much for a relaxing get away. Do not book here, you will be disappointed read more

Perfect place to stay for the winter if you're seeking snow in Julian or neighboring snow covered areas. Bed sheets were clean, the heater worked fine, and though not a modernized tv, premium channels were available. The place is old, and the old smell of the wood does come out. No creepy eerie vibe as others have said, maybe my room was not haunted or something. Odd things to note are: the land line in the room was disconnected, the alarm clock in the room was also disconnected, and though an "Apple Tree Inn" wifi hub was within range of the room, there is no wifi available to the tenants. All in all a great option for local snow seekers looking for a warm home base. My advice is to deal with them directly, unfortunately, I dealt with them through hotels.com, and it was a horrible experience, due to the website's inflexibility. read more

Bathroom had excellent hot water, heater lamp, great lighting. This is a cute place that feels very rustic and great for a short stay for a rest stop perhaps. Such cute decor! Loved that the rooms were not carpeted and the style and design was clean modern and what we called country chic. The pool was also clean and fun and the kids enjoyed playing in the backyard of the property too. Beds and pillows were comfy and clean. Nice coffee maker. Loved the no contact check-in and innkeeper was super quick to respond to my late night text request for a new smoke alarm battery and morning request for more coffee cups. The cleaning in the room could have been a little better. Floors were swept but not mopped (my daughter spilled some water within 5 minutes of being there and when I wiped it up the rag was black and behind bathroom door was yucky. The biggest issue here and I acknowledge that it is somewhat beyond their control is the non-potable water. They've not had potable water since February and this fact was not disclosed upon renting. I would not have stayed here if I had known. It grosses me out to shower in brown water and not even knowing why it was not potable was distressing. Plus I had to tell my daughter be careful don't get any water in your mouth when you shower. The notice said don't use for water for dishes so I was worried about whether the dishes were clean and also had no water to clean them. I think they should have provided disposable paper plates and flatware in this situation. They gave you 6 small bottles of water but with everything you need water for they should have given a gallon or two. They did bring me more water when I asked for more for our second night though. read more

I'm sorry if this is long but PLEASE follow along and read. Our stay was Friday Night April 6th, 2018. Hubby booked this place without looking at any reviews from any site. We wanted a family weekend to end spring break in a new place so we picked Julian. We knew that check in time was 3pm so we arrived about 320pm. The sign on the lobby door said to please return at 4pm. So we went to explore our surroundings. When we returned about 430pm the sign said please return at 5pm. There were hikers trying to check in as well. My husband called the number on the sign as we had waited long enough. A young man who we later found out was named Alex came to open the office and give each of us our keys. He stated that our room #19 had just finished getting clean. We walked in and it smelled of strong Pine Sol. We settled in and started taking pictures of everything like we always do. This room has potential but a LOT needs to be done to get it to an acceptable standard IMO. I used the bathroom almost immediately and noticed my toilet paper didn't flush with the water. I informed my husband who used the bathroom and flushed again to only have my paper still not flush. He called the number on the office door. Alex showed up about 15 or so min later. He went and plunged the toilet for a few minutes and came out to tell us it was clogged. But remember the room had just been cleaned! He left and then returned with a box of rid x. He plunged more then came out to tell us that we couldn't flush the paper AT ALL!! He said that they were on a "country septic system" that they shared with the attached restaurant (who by the way can flush paper) and that we needed to put our paper in the tall black can that was in front of the toilet. My husband said even when we go #2? He replied yes. While we were waiting on him to finish with the toilet we tried to watch some tv. Barely any channels worked (maybe 5). Alex said that they pay for channels but don't receive them and that we had to deal with what we had. After Alex left we decided that for the money we were paying for the weekend ($209.52 Fri/$317.52 Sat...Yes for the same room!!) that it wasn't worth that and that we would leave the next morning. On our way to dinner we found Alex in an unfinished room (looks as though most of the property is under renovation) and told him we wanted a refund and that we would check out Saturday. He replied that he wasn't sure he could make that happen as the owners weren't always around or in contact. Saturday morning we woke up and gathered our things and made our way to the office. Which of course was empty just like every other time. My husband found someone who found Alex. When my husband asked for a receipt showing that we would be refunded Alex replied that he had no ink for the printer. So my husband asked to take a picture of the computer showing that we were being refunded. Alex also mentioned that since they knew were leaving they had already relisted the room and it was rented out. REALLY????? When I took my dog for a walk Friday afternoon shortly after our arrival I saw the farmhouse on the back side of the property. I noticed it looks in tip top shape. Upon leaving Saturday and looking for another place to check into, I found the farmhouse was available for $209 a night!! WHAT??? Why was I paying $209 for a suite on Friday and $317 for the same thing on Saturday when the 3 room house is $209???? When reading back thru reviews here and other places, I saw that someone named JM replied that the renovation should be complete by March 30th. I understand sometimes you fall behind a deadline but this place should not be operating while still under renovation. Still not sure why we were even charged $209 for Friday. We don't even feel that it was worth $100 with all of the issues. The view from the front door is of the propane tank and the storage shed. The view from the bedroom window is a pile of stuff under a blue tarp and a refrigerator. There is an extra chair in the room that looks like its been in the yard for a few years but it apparently is the extra towel holder. The walkway down to the room is sketchy and dirty with broken concrete. There is a dryer in the room but no washer. The closet doors werent in hung and inside the closet. The trash in the bedroom had not been emptied though our room had "just been cleaned". There is a pile of boxes and furnishings at the lobby and another one at the opposite end of the front side of the property. The shower is extremely small. The only pros about this place was that its Dog friendly and that it has a Keurig. EVERYTHING else is a con. I think this place has potential but don't let the rustic feeling sign lure you in right now!! We were so disappointed that this was the end of spring break for our son. read more

We originally wanted to camp near Julian, but there wasn't anything available. So, we weren't looking for fancy -- really just a step up from camping. This was really what it was. The room was a good size. We had two double beds. It was HOT and the air conditioning worked well. The rooms are very dated. Old bedspreads. No refrig in room, which was a bummer. The TV got 3 channels. There was a huge nail coming through the ceiling. We told the owner and he was already aware-- said it was from his roofing job. Beware- don't jump on the beds. Ouch!! The pool is right on the street and wasn't heated. If you are only looking for a place to lay your head this might fit the bill. It's not the kind of place you'd want to hang out and relax. read more

I had the pleasure of staying at the Apple Tree Inn. It was a sisters get away. This is a gem of a motel. The rooms have just recently been renovated and let me tell you our room was wonderful. Neat, clean and all the amenities of home. Alex was there when we checked in and made us feel right at home. The property was still being renovated and Nick was so wonderful to show us some of the newly renovated rooms. They are awesome. Nick and Alex were the best. So very excited for our next visit. Nick and Alex were very friendly and accommodating. The swimming pool was an added bonus and was very relaxing to sit by and have coffee in the morning. We needed a large double room with close/easy private access to the parking lot so we could load and unload heavy equipment into our room with no stairs and no lobby to have to drag our equipment through. This motel was perfect for that. Also, the two large beds were really comfortable and clean, which we really appreciated. The mattresses were actually top end Beautyrest brand, almost two feet thick & crazy comfy. Comforter was clean, comfy and super warm. Two pillows per bed. The room was recently remodeled, quite clean and warm but don't expect the Four Seasons. Also, Alex and Jamal are easy to reach by text (and very responsive) and al of the staff was wearing face masks all the time. Don't expect the old fashioned motel manager that's sitting behind the front desk all day and night, though. The best way to get what you want is by text. Check-in is at 4:00 pm and early check in was not available when we went this weekend, which was fine with us. They will text you your room number and a code to the lock box just outside each room to get your key. Check-out is 11:00 am and you just drop off the room key in a mailbox just outside the front office door. The few negatives were that the water is not potable due to coliform bacteria. That means you cannot drink it and should not allow it to touch your mouth. In fact, we did not bathe all weekend long but we were actually too busy working hard to do so. The motel provides plenty of bottled water though and you can get more if you need it. The water looks clean, though, it's not brown, rusty or smelly. We only used the water in the sink to wash our hands. We had plenty of toilet paper, soap, clean towels, etc. Also, the walls are not well insulated between rooms, we could hear our neighbors very easily. There was also an unpleasant odor outdoors at times, maybe the septic system combined with the warm weather? Probably the best part of this motel is the CA Mtn Bakery accross the street. Open Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 am, this place had the best biscuit, egg, cheese and bacon (or ham or sausage) breakfast sandwiches, awesome cookies, huge scones, muffins, bear claws, croissants, turnovers, brownies, fresh hot coffee and the perfect apple pie, not too sweet like most of the others. this hotel is so run down. i wish i would have paid the extra 50$ to stay in the nicer hotels in town. when we arrived the room was fine but the floors were so dirty it turned our white socks nearly black. when we pulled down the bed we noticed a bunch of black hairs inside of the bed. the sheets were obviously not changed before we arrived which is so disgusting. when i contacted management he said someone would come change them and then 20 minutes later texted me to say they could either leave them outside the door for us to change ourselves because of their covid restrictions or we could change rooms. so they can't come into the room because of covid but they can leave dirty sheets on the bed. we chose to move rooms at about 9pm and the room we got was freezing. and the heater wouldn't work. i contacted management again and got no response until we were already sleeping. it was freezing in there all night. when we got up in the morning the shower water was literally coming out brown. so no showers for us! we ended up checking out at 8am so we paid nearly 200$ for 16 hours in an avail dump. would not recommend to anyone. read more

This place is the worst place I have ever been to in my life first I paid for a sweet for my bachelors party the pool was broke the amenities were not there I listen to music on my laptop and was Threaten by the hotel mgr to turn it down when it's quieter then there tv there so I turn if off and I still receive threats saying he would call the sheriffs and that we need to leave he then continue to harass us to the point we left we did not stay the night due to Being harass by the management the cost was 350$ a night he kept the money and refuse a refund and even though I complied he left us outside in the cold and took are money like a bunch of thieves this is not how you treat guess at all it is highly disrespectful and very poor aspect of how to treat your guest I will not ever come back to this place I want all of u to know don't stay here it's not worth it your better off in a motel 6 compared to here read more
