I love visiting Appleworks - there truly isn't anything else quite like it in Indiana! With lots of activities for families and beautiful grounds that provide a picturesque backdrop for photos, this is a must visit place in the Hoosier state. For my Thanksgiving apple pie, I stopped in to pick up a variety of their apples and I think they grow the best apples for pie making. It was definitely the most popular dessert at my Thanksgiving table, with only one piece leftover. Highly recommend buying your apples here and supporting a locally owned orchard. read more

Well I would love to leave a good review but we were given no choice but to leave upon arrival. After almost an hour drive, we pulled into the gravel lot to see "no pets allowed" signs posted everywhere. I completely understand this policy for indoor buildings, but an orchard? That makes no sense. If they had a working website, we might have known we weren't welcome before the drive. I took my kids here often as kids. One of my kids wanted to bring their kid here too. Great Grandma wanted to come along. First, the handicapped parking was not up by the building but in the grass on a hill. No paths for use with rollators/wheelchairs for the elderly. Then, My grandchild was playing on the slides and everyone was kicked out and the area was locked. We got back to the live animals and discovered the food to feed them is back at the shop, which you have to stand in a long line to pay for. Nobody felt welcomed. Very disappointed. I will not be recommending this to anyone in the future. read more

My family and I have been visiting this orchard for several years, and it has become a tradition we look forward to every fall. Unfortunately, this year's experience was very disappointing. First, there is now a $5 parking fee, which we paid without issue. However, before we even made it to the entrance, a woman approached us very abruptly and told us that pets were not allowed on the property. She did not ask whether our small dog (a 4-lb Shih Tzu, who is our ESA) was a service animal. When I explained that we have always brought our ESA in the past, she stated that the previous owners "weren't operating according to FDA rules." When I asked if we could get our $5 parking refunded since we would not be staying, she would not give a clear answer. Instead, the interaction became argumentative and uncomfortable. She even took photos of our license plate, though at no point were we disrespectful or threatening. We had driven 40 minutes to get there, only to leave feeling attacked and unwelcome. Sadly, this ended a long-standing family tradition. It's unfortunate that the new management seems more focused on being combative than customer-friendly. We will be finding a different orchard to support going forward. read more

Well times have changed and my rating needs to be as well. This used to be our place to go but from what I have read new ownership and changes we did not like. You now have to pay a $2 per person to get into the facility. You no longer go grab pumpkins and by weight pay. You now have to go grab pumpkins and be charged small, medium or large for the pumpkin but you don't have a clue what size it is until the man looks up and down and says yea that is this size. This is why we don't go to a pumpkin patch closer to us and now we will be looking for a different one next year. This place has lost its touch. read more

Apple Works is absolutely beautiful. My kids love the petting zoo, the playground, and being able to run freely. I don't believe you can pick your own apples anymore. As a sidenote, this is a beautiful place to get family photos taken really any type of year! This is one of the places my clients like the best I have noticed that the shop is usually super packed and the lines wrap around the building. Everything is extremely expensive in there. read more

We have buying apples from this orchard for more than 20 years. But a change of ownership has forced us to find a new supply. After buying a bushel of apples this fall, we got home to find about a fourth of the apples were infected with warty bumps or other imperfections. We were told by the manager to bring them back to the orchard and they would be replaced. Once we arrived, the manager said she had overstepped her authority, and an owner wanted to inspect them. The owner was dismissive, rude and arrogant, saying there was nothing wrong with the apples, the bad spots could just be cut out, and they didn't need us as customers. We left the bushel and were issued a refund, and found an Indiana orchard, Huber's, near Starlight, where the apples were delicious and free of bumps and customers were treated with respect. That's like Appleworks used to be, but is no more. read more

We used to go here every year because it had that down home feeling like you were visiting grandmas house. Unfortunately this year we were sadly disappointed that the homey feeling was gone. The animals were so sad and weren't eating or letting you pet them. The staff wasn't friendly or helpful. They didn't act like they wanted to be there. They no longer allow you to bring your dogs which is sad because they too are part of the family. The manner in which they were handling those with dogs was very unprofessional. We come here at least once yearly to get our apples, pumpkins, and cider! This past weekend we went and were pleasantly surprised at all the new additions and remodels done by the new owner! The shop is bigger and easier to walk through than in the past and more activities for the younger kids to do. One suggestion I have is do not go on the weekends - too busy! Typically, we try and go during the week but were not able to this year. They have food trucks on the weekends though but the lines were really long. I have read some negative reviews on here but unsure if I agree or not. Some are saying that you no longer can bring your dogs but I never did so cannot clarify. Also, we didnt go to the pumpkin patch so unsure if you can pick your own pumpkins or not but know in the past you could so that would be a real bummer if that has changed. I do know that the apples, cider slushies, apple butter, and apple dumplings still have the same great taste as before but they were much more expensive than before. From now on I plan on making my own dumplings. read more

If you need something fun to do, don't sleep on Apple Works in Trafalgar, IN ! I went on Saturday and had such a wonderful time. It was actually my first time at an apple orchard ! When you pull in, you will immediately notice the field of trees. And off to the left there is a lake surrounded by woody area. In the back, there's a "petting zoo" type area. You can feed the goats and alpacas or ride a pony ! They also have a zip line set up and some things to keep the kids interested. Further back from the main area there is a miniature trail to walk on and a butterfly garden. Back at the main area, there is a building where you can buy goods ! They have different produce for sale, especially apples, and other things like pies and jellies. They also sell Amish cheese ! In the front of the building, you can buy ready to eat items. I had an apple slushee, which was to die for, and an extremely delicious apple fritter ! I came home with an apple pie that is so heavy, it has to have 100 apples in it. And an extremely delicious orange bread ! The orange bread is so moist, it falls apart before you can even get it out of the container. It's also packed full of an incredible orange flavor ! We have always gotten our pumpkins here. Last year they were all in boxes very similar to what is in front of Kroger and Walmart. This year they wanted us to pay $2 per person for the honor of buying our pumpkins from them. We are senior citizens from a nearby town, we are not doing the kiddie rides etc. We would be buying pumpkins, apple cider, etc. but they weren't interested in our business. When asked when we could come and not pay we were told next Tuesday and maybe the pumpkin patch will still be open. Oh wow, my original review is 8 years old! It is definitely time for an update. We've continued to come here every year to stock up on apples and apple products. They are the only place we've found that lets you mix different types of apples in one bag. The staff know the apples very well and can recommend the perfect apple for any taste or need. I always get a full peck of a mix of sweet and tart eating apples and enjoy them over a couple of months. I love that they have some heirloom varieties as well as the newer hybrids. They don't have apple picking here, but honestly, isn't it easier to let them pick the apples? Along with the apples I bought Apple butter, apple cider, apple pie, apple doughnuts and some butternut squash for variety. Walking among the trees and out to the pumpkin patch makes a trip here a relaxing outing. The petting zoo and play areas are great for kids, and the new addition of a treehouse is a peaceful spot for adults. We saw a for sale sign out front this year, and learned the owners are retiring. Hopefully whoever buys the property will keep it an orchard! I will be keeping an eye on this over the coming months and hoping to not lose my favorite apple spot! read more

The grounds here are simply gorgeous. Two of my girlfriends and I traveled about an hour from Indy. It was well worth the time. The store has all sorts of goodies (apple butter, popcorn, pies, breads, etc.). One area serves apple cider slushes, apple fritters, apple donuts. The apple fritters and the apple cider were amazing. There is a huge area for kids - face painting, slide, haystacks and more. The alpacas in the animal area are the cutest. There are goats and chickens as well. I would like to point out that I am not the type of person to make reviews, this is my first one ever but this one strikes a spot in me so I need it to be known so it can maybe change. The new owners have completely commercialized this property. I grew up going here every year and they have completely gutted parts of it that I used to love. The area w/ the fudge & pies in those tiny huts inside have been replaced with a shop of tshirts & candles. The food outside is just truck vendors. They pre package your apples, no more apple picking! Pumpkins are definitely not grown there anymore. They charge admission and parking now. Oh yeah and no more pets. Just not the place it used to be. We are going to a new apple orchard this year & it kind of breaks my heart! read more

My family and I have been going to Apple Works for over 10 years...maybe 11...not sure...I've lost count. Its been our favorite despite the drive from north Indy. Its been bittersweet this year because my girls are now 13 and 16 and they've outgrown most of the activities. My oldest still love the petting zoo and the goats. Apple Works has gotten busier over the years. They have added attractions slightly. The Zipline is like a year or two old and the tractor ride is fun and is only about 3 or 4 years old. The big hay hill is and slides are fun for the younger kids. The bamboo garden is great for hide and seek. The petting zoo is always fun for the kids. The goats are expressive and they sometimes have peacocks which is always fun! The day we went we got to try some homemade amish apple butter and fried biscuits...It was a bit expensive at $4.50 a serving and the bisuits were small bite sized drops...but it was soo tasty. The grounds are beautiful and great for amazing fall photoshoots. The only major downfall is that it does get SUPER SUPER busy. Lines for food is long and slow. I think I stood in line for about 45 minutes for apple dumplings with ice cream. The apple dumpling was amazing and the only time I eat it...but that line was soo slow. The line in the building was longer...so we opted for the trailer. The other half of the family visited the petting zoo and purchased apples and I was STILL in line for the dumpling. All in all, Apple Works is a family tradition. We love the place, even as the kids get too old to ride the train or slide down the bumpy slide. read more

It had been a long time since I had been to this orchard considering there is one just ten minutes from my house. But I knew I was going to be in the area and headed on down the country road to this spot. First, it is an orchard with a pumpkin patch, but it also has a lot to do for visitors. No, you don't get to pick your own which is extremely inefficient because families frankly don't do very well telling what is ripe, or only pick the pretty ones. (It is also a liability for the orchard if you fall while climbing which means higher insurance costs.) But they do have a lot of varieties of apples that you simply cannot find at grocery stores because many are heirloom. And you also get to sample the varieties before you buy. Second, it has a free petting zoo. They do sell some animal feed from dispensers with instructions on how to do it to avoid fingers getting nibbled. There were goats of different sizes, alpacas, a mini horse and mini donkey, and chickens (no petting). One of the cooler things is that there is an elevated walkway for the little goats to climb (it has railings to keep them in) and walk above you. It's called the "Goatway to Heaven". Third, if you go when it isn't peak season, like August, you can easily find parking near the retail building and shelter area. By the shelter, there are lots of landscaped features that make for some beautiful photos. There is Lorene's Lake, a mini Japanese waterfall, a Gazebo, and lots of flowers and shrubs that make the place really great for posing. During the busy season in the fall, they have food trucks open, pumpkin patch rides, "train" rides, and a playground. There is a bamboo "maze" which is pretty open by the giant slide (kids only). These aren't open the rest of the year. Inside the retail building, there are lots of local items to choose from. Not only are there fresh (many picked that day) fruits and veggies, but there are jams/sauces, fudge, caramel apples, and ice cream. Although there are separate rooms in the building, you can get it all and pay at the counter when you are done collecting your choices. I picked up some large Zestar apples which run a bit tart for a tasting apple. I also got some Grand Gala (one of three varieties of Gala) that have a bit more sweetness than tart. You can also mix varieties in your bag without worrying about individual pricing. You can't do that at a grocery! Unless you are a fan of large crowds or are going just for the rides, I highly recommend coming before the rush to be able to take your time and enjoy zoo and scenery. Large beautiful grounds with apple orchards, pumpkin patches, petting zoo, and water views. Midsize group of family and friends held a private event Saturday evening after hours which included a bonfire and hayride. They have shelters available to rent as well, but we all sat around the fire that they started for us while we enjoyed our hayride around the site. We got to see the patch and orchard against the gorgeous backdrop of colorful trees in autumn. During regular business hours they're serving ice cream and slushies in their store. Im so upset with myself I didn't get the ladies name. I went down into trafalgar with my girlfriend to get some slushiest and an apple pie and have a nice day out. The first day we went we ended up walking around and looking at the animals just enjoying the view because most was sold out! That's a good thing. This place is awesome. I was told to not come on a Monday because after the weekend is the least amount of product on shelves considering everyone comes in on the weekends. So just a heads up. The second day I went they had slushies so we were satisfied but the apple pies were sold out again. I happened to mention I was their the day before and they didn't have apple pies. This wonderful lady went out of her way to check to see if the pies were ready. This is when they were very busy and she was checking people out. She made my day and made my perspective of apple works in terms of customer service just awesome. I thank you again and if you read this you know who you are. If you like apple pie. I have never written a review of any business but I can't let other people experience this. We have gone here every year for the last 9 years but it recently has gone downhill since it changed owners. We planned to drive from Indy which is an hour away so we left at 9 to get there at 10 when it opened. About a half mile away we were stopped in dead traffic. We weren't sure what was going on but 40 minutes later we finally made it to the one single person who was taking admission money from the car. We get to our parking spot only to realize that the person didn't give us a bracelet for our 4 year old to get to do activities. So at this point we've been in the car for an hour and 40 minutes and the kids are over it. I go to the cashier and explain that we weren't given a bracelet or receipt but we did pay. Mind you, the bracelet is $5. She makes a big deal of the fact that she will have to call a manager over. So more waiting. Over a $5 bracelet. So the manager storms over and is already very aggressive acting and just starts putting a bracelet on my 4 year old. No apology for the inconvenience. So I tell her that we won't be coming back after waiting in the line that we had to wait in in the car and she then says that we are being "hateful" to our staff and begins making a huge scene. She also points to the exit and says loudly "THERE'S THE GATE!" After treating us this way she then attempts to take my 18 month olds hand and says "here sweetie let me put this on." I take the bracelet from her hand because no way this maniac is touching my child. She yells "WOW" and storms over to the police officer that was there, pointing at us and yelling. At this point my four year old is sobbing hysterically asking why that lady was being so mean. We try to calm her down while the police officer proceeds to follow us around, even going all the way to the petting zoo. My four year old was terrified and still crying asking why "the mean lady called the police." It wasn't until I calmly approached the cop and said "sir I never raised my voice, I didn't cuss, I didn't threaten anyone, but you following us around is scaring my kid" that he finally walked away. We tried to make the best of it but it was as such a horrible experience. The play area was a couple slides and some hay bales. There was a small train that was another wait. The clientele was smoking so much that you smelled cigarettes everywhere you went. My kid kept looking around worried that the "mean lady" was going to show up. When we left the line of cars was at least two miles down the road so those people were probably in line for upwards of two hours. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. There are so many other lovely places to visit for fall fun in the Indianapolis area. read more

The one way loop is a great idea for traffic flow but they need better signage where you choose to go to the shop or pumpkin patch. An 8.5"x11" sign 12' after the intersection doesn't cut it. The pumpkin patch is pretty disappointing. 90% of the pumpkins are already cut off the vine so it is like a produce stand scattered in a field. I wish that they would leave them on the vines like most pumpkin patches do. However, with about 30 minutes of searching, we did eventually find some suitable pumpkins. The shop part is great and their baked goods are excellent. Again, some organization would go a long way here. The registers are outside but you have to go out of the building and then turn to face back towards the building to check out. Overall, it was OK but we will probably head back to The Lark next year for a more traditional patch. read more

I came here with my 2 kids, and nieces and nephews. Ages ranging from 3-17 years old. We came on a Sunday which was super busy. The front parking lot got super full so they sent us to park back by the pumpkin patch. I was 8 months pregnant and ended up having to walk quite a ways to get to the "fun stuff" in the main area. Apparently you cannot pick your own apples even though they have an orchard? I think this is a major loss financially for them. Lots of people like the idea of a one stop. Shop for pumpkins, apple picking, and fall fun. This place COULD have it all but they choose not to. They do however have lots of activities for younger kids. A "playground" which includes a zip line and few other small obstacle courses. I wouldn't really call it a playground though. They have a Petting farm area, music, food, gift shop, and mini train ride. The older kids were bored. The younger kids loved it despite the chilly weather. The downfall is you have to pay for literally everything. Even a hayride to the parking lot or pumpkin section, to play on the playground, etc. Overall it was a good place to go for some fall fun but need improvements in a few areas for sure. read more

Apple works is one of the seven wonders of Indiana. Nestled in the southern corner of Johnson County just south of Trafalgar is an amazing orchard that has mastered Apple tourism. During peak season (September-October) hundreds of filled minivans descend on the orchard. Visitors are greeted by live folk music, artisans and anything that can be made from apples including pies dumplings, breads, apple butter, ice cream, donuts, fritters, etc. About twenty varieties of freshly harvested apples are available for tasting and purchase. Today we purchased an apple pie and icee cream cone. We also ventured back to their pumpkin patch to select a number of assorted pumpkins and gourds from the field (35 cents/pound). About 500 other families had the same idea. But there were plenty of pumpkins on the 20 plus acres of orange speckled terrain. Along the way there were strategically placed photo opps. What a great family fun activity. This was our first time to pick pumpkins but this will be an annual event for us in the future. There were also a number of food trucks if you get hungry offering barbecue and hot dogs. The kids enjoyed the playground complete with zip line ($3/child). There were lots of portable restrooms and hand washing stations set up throughout the grounds. But back to the pie ($14.95) OMG! Thick crust, homemade almost cake-like, generously filled with apples that were a perfect blend of sweet and tart. The pie was gently flavored with cinnamon. This is among the best pies I have ever eaten. One of these pies would made a great gift. I highly recommend a visit. Bring a wagon because you want more pumpkins than you can carry. Come early or go on a weekday because it gets very crowded on the weekend. read more

This site is NOT ADA or handicap complaint they have no intent to help blind vision em-pared or mobility challenged customers, this site is rough, uneven, poorly lit, multi graded surfaces with loose gravel and NO reserved handicap parking or ramps. The walking paths are UN-level rough dirt, routed Expect nothing from this company, unless you are in fit condition to walk from their 1/4 mile back parking lot to the main buildings this site is only set up to handle about 100 people at a given time. If their front lot is full you might reconsider visiting. Port-o-potties with no wash stations. Waste of a trip to try to enjoy a day. read more

My family and I have been visiting Apple Works for years. They have started to get more and more crowded every year but they have done an amazing job handling the large crowds. From the animals to the pumpkins to the play ground, there is SO much for the family to do. There are many free things but a majority of the attractions cost money. The pumpkins are definitely overpriced but I feel you are paying for the pumpkin patch experience! I also think they should charge less for the attractions. When we arrived, the first thing we asked the person directing traffic was, "Where do we go to pick apples?" He said "park in the back and then come back up front to pick apples". What he meant was, "park way in the back, walk all the way back up front, and choose which already picked apples you want to buy." This answer is like the "Depends on what is is" answer - "it depends on what 'pick' means". No, mofos - in the context of apples and orchards, "pick" means my kids and the other family's kids we came with get to pick apples from the apple tree, not choose which apples you have already picked off of the apple tree. They can do the latter at Walmart. You *know* that's what "pick" means - don't waste our time by pretending that "pick" has another meaning. If you come here knowing that you cannot pick apples, you may be ok. But why would you want to go to a place where you cannot pick your own apples when there are places where you can? You know where else you can go to buy apples that you don't pick? Walmart, Meijer, Kroger, Marsh, etc. After wasting a couple of hours here, we finally asked, "Where are the bags so we can go pick our own apples?" The person we asked gave the same catatonic reaction she would have given if we had asked, "Where is the Necronomicon?" All of us were absolutely stunned by her answer. The kids were so disappointed we had to drive 45 minutes to Anderson Orchard for a real apple orchard experience. We usually go there every year but someone recommended The Apple Works. Finally writing a review about this great place. I have been taking my kids here for many years and every year it gets better. It has a wonderful petting zoo, trails, store with fresh produce, baked goods and of course, fresh apples that are so good. So much to do here that doesn't cost anything. The bamboo maze. The barn with the giant tube slide and rope swings. Petting zoo. All free! The play area with zipline is only $3 and adults are free. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Can get really busy during the peak Fall weekends especially at pumpkin time. Crowds usually pickup later in the day so arrive early to beat them. A real inexpensive gem that you and the kids will really enjoy. read more

I've watched this farm grow since the inception. It never disappoints! This is a great family establishment or a nice date spot. Our kids fed goats, ducks, and chickens and played in the bamboo maze. The autumn season can be a very busy time to go. The landscape is gorgeous, and it is completely worth your drive. Apples, peaches, and pumpkins are staples throughout the year. read more
