Classic brunch spot with classic brunch food. Loved it! Was great service and reasonably quick and inexpensive :D

Although I had heard quite a bit about 'The Armview' over the years, my car-less-ness had kept me away until this past Monday. This place is basically a great modern take on a diner. Lots of unique menu options with choices like: The Montreal smoked meat sandwich (reuben or plain with Dijon), the Highland burger with chorizo sausage and smoked gouda, as well as the grilled shrimp salad which comes with avocado, papaya, mesculin greens, shrimp and spiced cashews. Mmmm... Lots of lamb and seafood choices~ certainly made me happy! For lunch I tried the lamb burger with horiatiki salad (essentially a greek). The burger was served on a delicious ciabatta bun. My enjoyment of the meal would have improved greatly if: 1) The lemon oregano dressing had been used more sparingly. The bottom half of my ciabatta bun was soaked through with the excess dressing on the salad that had seeped off. 2) The burger needed more tzatziki. There was hardly any. Tzatziki and lamb are a winning combo, load it on! My friend tried the Mumford multigrain with mashed potato and enjoyed it. She subbed most of the ingredients off in favor of the 'personalize' menu options though so I can only really vouch for the sandwich in its altered state. Great ambience in this little restaurant! Pleasant service as well. The booths could have used with a wipe down although we were in at 1:30pm after the lunch rush so I'll give the servers a break and assume they were too busy over the rush to clean. Try this spot out! I hear good things about the brunches too.

Retro diner meets hip DJ lounge? Yeah, I can dig it. It's like taking an authentic journey back to the good ole days if those good ole days were far cooler than they actually were. You just kinda want to run up to people's tables and start awkward PSA videos about puberty and the economy of working for a factory. No? Just me? I've been here multiple times for brunches and breakfasts that have all been really nice. The menu has a great selection and plenty of twists on old favourites. Plus they have Hollandaise sauce, so who really cares what they want to put it on so long as it gets it into your face, right? But food aside, the reason The Armview gets a five-star from me is because of the vibe. They've taken a really interesting concept and made it work with the addition of great cocktails, incredible music nights, theme parties, and more awesome than you could ever expect that close to the rotary. One of my resolutions for 2011 is to be less afraid of that traffic mess so I can be here more often.

A little out of the way from my everyday wanderings, The Armview was a special trip with friends. The idea of shaking things up with a new venue was the perfect midweek remedy, and as it turns out, a tasty pub-style time. It was early evening, and this place was bustling. Although it was not a long wait for a spot, there was a bit of a kerfuffle getting situated. An initial confusion of table openings caused for a slight bend in first impressions, but the service staff quickly recovered by getting us a great booth in all efficiency. Phew- time to enjoy. This is a modern take on the old time diner. Art Deco meets traditional 50's booth seating and small town flavour. Bold patterns paint the walls, floors and fabrics, and service is approached with a well mixed, friendly attitude. The menu here is extensive, offering a full selection of pub-style variety. They mainly stick to classic selections of nacho appetizers and burgers, sandwiches and pasta main dishes, but from the plates I saw, it all appeared as yummy goodness. I ordered the local haddock, and it proved itself well. And for pub-fare, there were a few items I was curious to try. (Eg. Haddock burger, Grilled Shrimp Salad) Impressed by the seafood opportunity here. There is also a great breakfast menu here, for those who make the first meal their best meal. The Armview can certainly accommodate that. I tried a sip of a friend's milkshake, which was also something I'd like to have for myself sometime. All in all, this place seems like a nice, wholesome spot to dine and get some hearty grub. Enjoy great service, a fresh esthetic and good quality in its offerings.

Brought some friends here tonight, and I had recommended the Armview because of its diverse menu options; the five of us all like different kinds of meals. It was a success! We all found something absolutely delicious and to our liking and to dietary needs. The waiter was also very polite and attentive to my allergy concerns, and had answers to my questions which helped ease my anxiety greatly. Overall this is still one of my favourite restaurants in Halifax; perfect for a night out that doesn't completely empty the wallet!

This place takes me back years from when I used to go after youth club for French fries and gravy with the boys. Now when I walk in I almost do not recognize it. WOW nicely decorated with wide booths fresh atmosphere. Being a chicken lover I had the sesame chicken stir fry, YUM that is all I can say. It had like a peanut taste to which was different but I like it. Portions were hearty so much that I was not able to have desert. Maybe I can save that for the next time.

Small portions and high prices. The food was acceptable but nothing special. There are better diners in Halifax.

For our first of two breakfasts, we went down to the restaurant itself. We'd been for brunch once before a few years ago, and it's still as subtly elegant as ever, with the warm, light-toned wooden ceiling and accents, mid-century modern furniture and airy views of the Queen's Marque courtyard. I was eyeing up both their version of the Monte Cristo and the banger and hash, and decided to split them up over our two visits. Drift being Drift, this wasn't your standard Monte Cristo, loaded up as it was with quality ingredients like house-smoked turkey, confit pork belly, local gouda and brown bread French toast. The meats were wonderfully tender and flavourful, and the melted gouda brought its lightly salty sharpness. I was impressed by the thick, brown bread as it held up extremely well to the French toast treatment, and its notes of molasses doubled down on the sweetness of the maple syrup drizzle and dusting of confectioner's sugar. All told, it was a delicious mix of sweet and savoury. The sandwich also came with some cursory fresh fruit, a roasted tomato, and some criminally under-billed potatoes. Denoted simply as "grilled potatoes", I was just expecting some chunky home fries, but it was much fancier than that, more along the lines of a potato pavé, with delicately laminated layers of potato in a crisp rectangle of potato-y goodness. For our second breakfast (from Drift, the following day, not the hobbit-style second breakfast), we splurged a little more to get room service and make our check-out process a little easier. With just a half hour lead time, we had a rolling table brought to our room and unfurled in front of our window which overlooked the boardwalk and harbour. The banger and hash was a delicious mash-up of British and Nova Scotian food. The aforementioned grilled potatoes took the place of the "mash", while two, house-made sausages filled the other titular roll. The sausages had crisp casings, and the juicy interiors which had a pleasant , rustic grain to them. As much as I love a basic breakfast sausage, these were definitely next level! The dish didn't stop there though, as it had two, perfectly poached eggs, a hefty dollop of sweet and savoury baked beans, and for that Nova Scotian component, some green tomato chow to help cut through a very rich breakfast. We were also given two complimentary canelés, topped with groundcherries. Kudos to Drift's baker, as this was probably the best canelé I've ever had. The exterior was darkly caramelized without a hint of burnt taste, and was impossibly moist and airy on the interior. While this was a working staycation, our breakfasts at Drift were a wonderful component of a couple days spent (occasionally) relaxing and enjoying some of the treats that our city has to offer.

We came here right at opening for breakfast and there was already a decent amount of people starting their day here with a meal. The staff was warm and welcoming and seated us right away. Even though it was breakfast, I like that their menu offered some lunch options in case you're looking for something more heartier. The food is fresh, tasty and well-seasoned. I ordered the seafood chowder which was delicious and included tons of seafood. The breakfast options are plentiful, but whatever you do, be sure to try their blueberry lavender jam! It's so delicious and made fresh in-house with local blueberries. It was so good, that I wanted to buy a jar, but couldn't since I had a long flight afterwards and it needed refrigeration. I'd definitely recommend this spot to grab a bite and drinks and I hope they offer a shelf-stable blueberry lavender jam soon!

Much has changed since we previously lived in Halifax, and while not the most seismic of shifts in…read morethe grand scheme of things, Black Sheep's upgrade from a tiny space on Dresden to the former Red Stag (or Alexander's if you're old enough) space was noticeable nonetheless. We came by on a quiet weekday evening in the lead up to the holidays, and the menu was as diverse and creative as ever. The small plates were calling to us - and as always, they let us try as much as possible. The ricotta toast light and bright, with layers of seasonal savouriness. Tender slivers of poached pear, spiced walnuts, watermelon radish and arugula came together for a wonderful mix of tastes and textures, and a fig balsamic glaze brought further sweetness and richness. My wife and I have always been fans of dahl curries, and Black Sheep's presentation was next level, or even multiple levels, for what is normally not a particularly visually appealing dish. Seared halloumi was perched on top, surrounded by a colourful mix of papadam, raita, pickled fennel and red onion, and cilantro. The resulting composition was an enjoyable spin on this dish, while still sticking respectfully close to its roots. I first came across ćevapi/ćevapčići at a Bosnian grocery/restaurant in Ottawa, and loved the grilled, casing-less sausages, and how they paired with accoutrements like ajvar (a red pepper and eggplant sauce), red onions, and flatbread. When I saw it on a restaurant menu in Halifax, it was an automatic "yes"! The little pork sausages had a great char from the grill, and had a rustic grain to the meat, but were still quite tender and juicy. The extra bits complemented them well, with the vegetal freshness of the ajvar, some tartness from the tomatoes and pickled red onion, and a salty pop from the feta. Last but not least was an order of fries. Since they opened, Black Sheep's hand-fries have consistently been some of the best in the city, and their iconic squid ink mayo still makes for delish dipping - with a goth vibe. I hope Black Sheep is doing well in their new digs, because the food that they're making is still as destination-worthy as ever, and now they have the space to match it.

However, the food simply did not deliver on what I expected from a gastropub, nor did it live up to the positive reviews I'd read beforehand. As a gastropub, one anticipates elevated, thoughtfully crafted dishes that showcase culinary skill and quality ingredients. What I encountered instead were dishes that fell short of those standards. The execution lacked the precision and care you'd expect at this price point, and the flavors didn't justify the gastropub positioning. I came with high expectations based on what others have praised here, but the food experience left me disappointed. While the service and ambiance have merit, they can't compensate for a fundamental letdown on the plate. For a gastropub to succeed, the food needs to be the star--and unfortunately, that's where The Stubborn Goat missed the mark for me.
