Seafood platter. I love how they put the fries on the side for the takeout orders.

Pleasant St. Diner never fails. Always fresh and tasty. Had the seafood platter, with calamari as clams are not in season. I could eat here everyday

I have had a craving for seafood Chowder for over 3 weeks. I found The Pleasant Street Diner, had this for reasonable price. The chowder had quite a lot of fish in it. Social distancing was done outside. The staff in the store were very nice. As customer return due the wrong order, the staff allowed the customer to keep mistaken food free of charge as well as food order. I will be returning

Seafood platter. Haddock, clams, scallops, shrimp with fries.

Great value here. Fresh seafood deep fried is the main draw. Pepsi products and canned beer to drink. Scallops, whole clams and haddock are excellent. Good service. Ample parking.

The location may seem a little sketchy to the point that you might decide to but leave your vehicle, but considering the easy parking in this larger lot, it is worth the effort to walk into this non descript restaurant. You will probably need surprised to see how full the tables are. In fact, there was a line up on the weekday lunch hour visit when we were there once seated, the servers proved to be very quick to serve, they were friendly and engaged with their customers. Our food arrived within minutes of being ordered and we could but help but comment on the large portions presented to us both. The amount of calamari on top of the fresh salad was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed eating the calendar first before tackling there huge, fresh salad underneath the mound of calamari. In short, the calamari was tender, the battery was slightly oily, but very acceptable. The salad was very fresh with generous amounts of feta cheese and kalamata olives although the red onions were surprisingly too 'oniony'. The pan fried haddock was very early tasty and perfectly cooked. The ample fries were acceptable. All in all, a good visit to a diner style restaurant. I will definitely go back

    Great breakfast!

The Long Version: I had heard great things about Evan's Seafood so my husband and I made a special trip to Dartmouth from Halifax on our vacation to check it out. It's right by the Alderney Ferry Landing so we took the ferry over and we were right there (ferry fare was $3 a person and it's a 15 minute ride). We got the Platter for 2 ($40) which came with 2 pieces of haddock, 4 Digby scallops, a half order of clams, half fries and half salad. We got to choose our salad (from Cesar, garden, spinach or Greek) and we got the garden salad with the dressing on the side. The amount of food was not sufficient for 2 people, imo. We had to go get a second dinner afterwards, lol. (My husband is an average-sized man and I am a much smaller than average-sized woman). Everything fit on one regular-sized dinner plate. However, the food did taste good ;) The Platter for 2 is gluten-free by default. The haddock breading was crunchy and I liked that it wasn't overly greasy. The scallops were a good size and were nicely cooked. Tender and not rubbery. The clams were good as well, although there was lots of batter on them. The fries were crispy and although not shoestring fries, I still enjoyed them. The salad was fresh and had a good variety of vegetables, but it was only a few mouthfuls. You order and pay at the counter. You tell them if you want to sit indoors or outdoors. They give you a numbered table sign and you place it wherever you want to sit. They will bring the food to you when it's ready and will clear the table when you're done, but they do not check up on you otherwise. Ambiance is...well...you're eating at a ferry terminal, lol. But if you eat outside, you're by the water. The patio was busy though, so we ate inside. I'm glad we tried it and it was fun taking the ferry over. (178)

Fleshing out the options a bit, there's also burgers, hotdogs and deep fried sides like onion rings and poutine.  Having arrived a just after the lunch crowd would have dissipated, I was able to immediately walk up and place my order, which had to be a single piece of fish and chips. I chatted with the friendly woman working there (Fran herself?) and my food was ready within a few minutes. A table next to the truck was set up with cutlery, seasonings and condiments, including spray bottles of white and malt vinegars. With a few picnic tables set up next to the truck, I sat down in the lightly cool, spring air and dug in. The fish was a hefty size, more than enough to make me glad that I didn't get a second piece. I enjoyed the thick, crispy batter and the fresh fish that flaked easily as I cut it with my plastic fork. A cup of what appeared to be homemade tartar sauce, with a generous amount of chopped pickles or capers, added a creamy tang that went well with both the fish and the fries. The fries were hand-cut, and a very deep, golden brown, but weren't as crispy as I would have liked. They would likely benefit from a blanching in water to remove excess starch before frying, and a double fry.  I appreciated the paper plates, but unfortunately there was only a garbage can and no composting or recyclables bin. Fran's could use a little polishing on the truck and the fries, but one of the original food trucks in the city is definitely doing its fish right.

After seeing this little fish'n'chip truck in downtown Dartmouth for months, I decided to finally give them a go. Last year they disappeared when the weather turned cold so I thought it best to get my order of fries when I could. Since I'm a vegetarian, the menu options were limited so I went with the slightly-healthier-sounding french fries over onion rings. In Googling this place (to see if they had a Web site) I discovered the fries are hand-made in the truck each day. And you can tell. They're nice, thick-cut fries. I may have to head back soon to try the onion rings. For all you omnivores, they have fish (fresh from Eastern Passage, I'm told), seafood and burgers too. It was a good experience: just walk up, order, wait a minute, pay, and voila! food. Staff were friendly and happy to have my business.

Granted, in the past we've either…read moregone with friends or been pretty busy, but taking four trips to actually get my first set of notes is a bit embarrassing. It's wild to think that Battery Park has been open for nearly a decade, but the years go by quickly! I'd only been there once before we left NS for several years, and once we returned and got a place in Dartmouth, I knew we'd be here frequently. Burgers and beer - what's not to like?! This first documented visit saw me diving into the Ace Burger part of the menu. I've loved Ace's burgers since their start in the kitchen at Gus' Pub, and I'm glad that they survived the ebb and flow of food trends, un like several other gourmet burger joints. I opted for the Dartmouth-Style Jughead, which is a sort of fancied-up version of In-N-Out's cult favourite, the Animal-Style burger, which involves cooking the patty in mustard on the flat top, and topping it with a messy burger sauce. Battery Park's iteration didn't evoke my vague memories of In-N-Out quite the same way that Stillwell's similarly-themed Burger Week offering did, but it was undeniably an excellent burger. Two, smashed patties with wonderfully crisp edges were lovingly topped with gooey slices of cheese, "Dartmouth sauce" and caramelized onions. This wasn't a pure umami bomb though, as classic accoutrements of lettuce, tomato and a pickle helped brighten up and balance out the burger. The fries were also top notch; the skin-on, hand-cut fries were nice and crispy, and addictively salty. My wife stuck with her long-running favourite, the Pig Mac, which unsurprisingly has pork subbing in for beef in another homage to a famous burger. The flavour is spot-on, and much, much better than its namesake, as in addition to the superior ingredients and execution, it doesn't come with that weird McDonald's aftertaste and regret. As we often do to get the best of both worlds, my wife had gotten a salad so that we could share our different sides. Battery Park's Caesar salad stuck close to the classic recipe, but stood out from the forgettable masses of this ubiquitous side thanks to their deeply rich and flavourful, house-made dressing, fried capers and real bacon. On my next time there, summer was now in full swing, and we snagged a table on the back patio. It was my first time out there, and I was impressed by the space. Patios in very urban settings often have limited real estate, but Battery Park's was a very good size, and had a chill vibe, like it was somebody's (large and busy) back deck. I wasn't feeling particularly burger-y with the heat, so I chose the mushroom dumplings and miso salad, while my other half went with the pork belly and pineapple burger. It was a little bit of a wait with a full house inside and out, but a cold beer and great company made it pass quickly. The dumplings were deep fried to a deep brown, but didn't taste at all burnt, with the spectacularly crisp wrapper encasing the rich mix of chopped mushrooms inside. A dipping sauce of perhaps soy and chili sauce brought added layers of flavour, and a little salad of radish and green onions added a splash of colour and freshness. My miso and ginger salad was very good, with plentiful fresh veg, apple and crisp slices of fried tofu that were beautifully encrusted with white and black sesame seeds, although the overall flavour profile wasn't as Asian as I expected. The namesake ingredients of the creamy dressing didn't really stand out, but it was a tasty salad nonetheless. My wife's burger was an impressive sight, with glistening, glazed slices of pork belly and a grilled section of pineapple on top of one of Ace's always-fantastic patties. The combination of sweet and savoury was a winning one, and it made me think of one of the first "gourmet" burgers I ever had, the Ultimate Burger at The Henry House, which also comes with pineapple. As expected, the top-notch fries were good to the last fry, and I should know, as I finished off what my wife didn't have room for! I suppose the idiom that "a lot of ink has been spilled" doesn't apply in this digital age, but fixtures like Battery Park still deserve attention for the great job that they're still doing after all these years.

This was a result of a combination of generally not being nearby mid-day and a certain amount of laziness and culinary condescension (just regular, non-gourmet fries? Pffft). But recently I've been wanting to hit up this stalwart of Spring Garden Road, and made my way here after first burning off some calories at the gym. They've got a few more things than fries and pop, although it's just sausages and hot dogs. Simple stuff, but that's fine. Their combo deal is very reasonable, $7 taxes in for fries, a hot dog or sausage, and a drink; I went with a sausage and water. There's the basics for condiments - ketchup, white and malt vinegars for the fries, mustard, onions, sauerkraut, pickles and banana peppers for your tube steak. There weren't many people ahead of me so my food came pretty quickly, and I plopped down on a library bench, ready to defend it against the aggressive birds that thicken their arteries off Bud's leftovers. Seriously, these must be the most heart attack-prone birds in the world. My plate certainly looked good, with what looked like a regular sized bag of their golden brown fries. It's nice to see that they either use the right potatoes or blanch them first, because they're not too dark like many hand-cut fries. The fries proved to be as good as they looked too, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I was worried that the fries at the bottom might get soggy from steaming in their own heat, so once I was done the sausage I spread them out, and that seemed to work. The sausage itself was fine, a nice snap from the casing and mild flavour made it inoffensive if still unimpressive. It was definitely a lot of food for seven bucks, if not the healthiest. This trip was all about the fries though, and Bud is definitely serving up some damn good spuds.

(We had called to book a table for trivia and when we walked in, they said no need to reserve--it doesn't get that busy. That should have been a warning.) We sat down for our meal. By 8:30, the first round of trivia had only concluded (this is considered slow--more on that below). That's when the server came by and grumpily asked if one of the people our party was 19 or over (he's 18). When we said no, she said he had to be out of there by 9:00. She didn't think to tell us this at 7:00, knowing we were there for trivia? No signage anywhere on the premises saying "Patrons under 19 have to leave by 9:00 p.m."? What kind of short-sighted policies do they have here? They were happy to take our money and not tell us that we'd have to leave by 9:00, knowing that we wouldn't be able to finish trivia. 2) Lost 1 star for slow and uninteresting trivia. Questions were read straight from a card by a host who didn't seem interested and didn't engage with his audience. He read each question slowly about three times, hence the s-l-o-w pace where it took 30 minutes for one round that didn't even have audio or video clues. The lack of players should have been our clue that this trivia event is not a success. 3) Lost 1 star for loud, eclectic ambience--this place doesn't know what it wants to be. The trivia was taking place at the same time as music on the speaker and sports TV were playing, all jumbled together at the same time. Maybe that's why the host had to repeat each question slowly several times. But hey, if you want to watch baseball while answering questions about Thomas the Tank Engine and listening to Mumford and Sons simultaneously, this is the place for you. If the food were good, it could save this place, but nope, just mediocre fare that could be served at any pub. And don't get me started on the quick little brown movement we saw out of the corner of our eye, darting under the dining tables. We know it's common for restaurants to have this problem, but flagrantly in the dining room while we were eating makes it easy to warn everyone we know never to come here. Solid nope, nope, nope for this place.
