It's a shame because there is so much to see here, but we probably missed out on at least an 1/8 of the museum because we were sweating and felt so icky we just needed to get back out into the fresh air. This was in winter mind you, so saying that it was just too hot outside is no excuse. It was only around 68 degrees at the hottest point of the day we visited and we came in the morning so leaving the museum was literally a breath of fresh air. I cannot imagine how it gets in the summer. Although the temperature made us miss some of the museum, we made sure to get through all the cars before leaving. We spent around 2 hours here and could easily have stayed longer. This is not just a quick walk-through car museum. It's packed wall to wall, upstairs and downstairs, with cars, collectibles, Americana and lots of really unexpected items. I love rare and classic vehicles so seeing a tucker 48 in person was pretty cool. That alone made my day. The Oldsmobile futuramic 88 was another favorite and the limo that had been converted into a train car was just wild in the best way and blew my mind. You definitely don't see cars like this everyday. It's not just cars here though, they had a golden rococo style piano that was to die for! It was absolutely stunning. There were a bunch of gorgeous ornate antique cash registers that I really liked, interesting vintage radios, firearms, law enforcement badges, sports memorabilia and historical stuff like old medical equipment. They had a whole section of model trains and if you're into Batman they have a small section of vehicles dedicated to that. The bathroom was small but tidy and the employees were were quiet and perfunctory. It's also dog friendly, which is lovely but our dog did seem nervous walking on some of the matting on some sections of the floor so just be aware. On its face, this really is a five-star museum but the heat and humidity inside were just unexpected, and it was especially bad upstairs. We were sweating and physically uncomfortable. We really wanted to finish looking at the museum but we just couldn't take it anymore. I really hope they address the climate issue; not just for guests but for the preservation of all the items inside as well. It's was still def worth the $20 per person and I recommend a visit, just dress in layers and maybe start upstairs first.

There was a lot to see and do and a lot to learn. I think it's perfect for a really interested four year old and anyone older. The Friar was everyone's favorite part. He played his part well, was great with the kids, and had so much information to share. He talked about what every day life was like, taught them about different herbs and traditional medicine, gave them a history of the property, and showed them the garden and his favorite tree. The two women in the Spanish house are the only thing that made me consider a four star rating. They were not good with children, and acted like our presence was an interruption to their sitting around and talking with each other. When we walked in one of them disciplined my six year old for not knocking on their door - not in a friendly or joking way - as if he had done something wrong for continuing a tour we paid to take. The interaction only went downhill from there, and although it doesn't seem fair to lower the rating when everyone else was so wonderful, I hope they will work to find people who are good with children in the future.

Regardless, there are many Americans that claim and prove to have Native American Ancestry, shown through DNA testing. Where I roll my eyes a little is that most claim to be related to Pocahontas and Geranamo. Because this is a Spanish mission, in some placards they emphasize that some Spanish men "intermarried" with the indigenous women and that the indigenous peoples found that to be a bettering of themselves. Of course, this is all speculation. In Cuban History, you learn that there was a complete genocide of the Indigenous peoples. It is well documented. Many of the indigenous preferred to throw themselves off the cliffs than to fall on the Spanish sword. Hatuey, who fought Spanish colonizers, famously said, "Then I do not want to go where they are. I would rather go to hell so as not to be where they are and where I would not see such cruel people." This is why there are no indigenous peoples in Cuba. Some of the Spanish conquistadors were even eaten by the indigenous. But this place would have you believe things were hunky dory between the Spanish and the indigenous. The Spanish were very Catholic and very strict with the social class or social caste system and would not "marry" the indigenous women they took. Even the historical actor said that the ledgers were all burnt and there isn't any historical legal evidence of their marriage unions. There is a lot of speculation about the past and not too much fact.

We stayed here two nights for a wedding on property and it was such a great experience!…read more The grounds are beautiful as they have numerous buildings, a chapel, a coffee shop, a rehearsal area, reception hall, oak trees galore, and a variety of cottages for guests. Beautiful photo opportunities all around the property. The bridal suite is GORGEOUS. It's set up like an actual beauty shop with 3 chairs and mirrors. Chandelier lighting and a huge mirror with stairs for the bride to be to get ready and make sure she looks her best. It was perfect for getting ready and extremely spacious. My husband and I stayed in the railroad 1 cottage and it was very quaint and beautifully decorated. Stocked with drinks, snacks, and coffee our cottage was very welcoming and a perfect stay for the wedding weekend. The owners, Jose and Marissa were so kind upon check-in and gave us some history of the property. Both of them actually worked the bar for the wedding and were so great. It was a truly beautiful wedding at a perfect venue.

Apparently the Monticello Opera House hosts various shows throughout the season, including a murder mystery show each year. I just happened to catch the last showing of it. Typically these shows include dinner as well, so it's essentially dinner theater. Don't ask me about price as I was invited, but the dinner included bread, salad, a chicken with pasta dinner, and a dessert (this time being a sponge cake). While the food certainly wasn't gourmet, it was better than expected. I recommend not eating the entire dinner though if you're like me with a tiny stomach. You'll be asking to get rolled out of there. Note, too, that they have a bar on site for drinks. These you purchase separately. Parking around the area is ample and free. This little town doesn't seem have much going for it except this majestic-looking opera house, which I found out has two floors and has been around forever and a day. They seem to host a variety of events, and well, I definitely want to go back. The Playbill I received had next season's showings and there's one there that intrigues me about Anne Frank. Hmm...

The building is old but precious, with original wood throughout. Though I had an enjoyable time, the only drawback was the sound. I am not sure of the types of microphones, etc., used. I heard most of the actors clearly, but a couple of the actors' voices were a bit muffled throughout the play. All in all, I am looking forward to attending more plays. And if/when I feel comfortable again being seated closely with other patrons at the same table, in a limited space while sharing a common meal, I will definitely do so - just not now. Though the auditorium is on the second floor and there are two flights of stairs, there is also an elevator. Of note, for those who love quaint settings for performances, consider donating to MOH to help maintain the ambiance and structural features.
