I don't have a number at the Governors Club yet but I often go with my friends. I visited with my friend for lunch and had the short rib sandwich. It was amazing. Such good flavor and the pieces of short rib were so tender. I had fries with my sandwich. I would recommend this place but it's only open to members and their guests. read more

My date and I went to the lounge for a drink before dinner. The servers here could not be more lovely. They greeted us and said it was nice to see us again. I had a Moscow Mule which was icy cold and as usual served in a copper mug. The taste was perfection as always. This is a nice place to relax with the faint smell of cigar in the air. It's not overwhelming so I don't mind. My date asked for some nuts and a big bowl was brought out to us. What a waste! Of course two people will not be eating that many nuts. Weird. Oh well. I went to the ladies room to check out my hair and makeup in that flattering lighting- gotta love that! Oh, the valet parking is always convenient and definitely needed since the parking spots in that area are severely limited. Great way to start the evening! read more

Very disappointing. My family and I were invited guests for what promised to be a very memorable evening enjoying a fine meal at a first class restaurant. The evening was indeed memorable, but not for the reasons we'd hoped. We arrived on time for a 6:30 reservation, to find a packed restaurant. We were lead immediately to our waiting table, and presented with menus. So far so good. By 7pm, the restaurant was empty due to a symphony performance that evening. Keep in mind that the restaurant was *empty* during most of the following. We placed our drink orders, which consisted of three non alcoholic beverages and two mixed drinks. The two mixed drinks took 20 minutes to arrive. We had to flag our waiter down to place our dinner orders; four filets, all medium, and one grouper. We also ordered the fried potato skins, which arrived fairly quickly and were very good. The entrees however, took well over an HOUR to be delivered, and when they were, three of the four steaks were severely undercooked (ordered medium, received rare). Two were sent back because they were inedible, one was not because the person was so hungry he didn't want to wait any longer. When the two steaks were finally returned, they were *still* undercooked. One was sent back a second time, the other was simply cancelled altogether. The manager finally came over and apologized, explaining that originally, three of the four steaks had been overcooked and had to be thrown out. He offered to buy us two desserts and remove the one cancelled filet, but *should* have taken all the steaks off the bill. He made excuses about how Saturday nights were normally not busy and they'd been caught unprepared. Absolutely unacceptable for a supposed 5 star restaurant. Oh yeah, and the dessert. They offered one of my favorites, Bananas Foster, prepared and flambéd tableside. As our waiter was new, he had not yet been taught to prepare the dessert, so he had to find someone who could make it. The lady who did come to our table was very personable and made a lovely presentation. And then we took our first bites... only to find that whomever assembled the ingredients on the cart cannot tell the difference between a banana and a plantain. We ordered bananas foster, but we wound up being served plantains foster. Seriously? All in all, our dinner took over THREE HOURS start to finish. For the prices this restaurant charges, I expected perfection both in the service and food preparation. What we received was nothing short of amateur hour. I was extremely embarrassed for our host, and extremely disappointed in the restaurant. I won't be back. read more

The Governors Club has cache due to location, history, and exclusivity. The food experience at the luncheon yesterday earned points for presentation but the actual food quality was average banquet fare. The fare of the day was overdressed not so fresh salad, stale rolls, and bland pasta. I have eaten at GC in the main dining room and enjoyed a variety of special events and meetings in many formats over the years. This past New Year's Eve prix fixe special event menu offered an enjoyable evening with friends but it was not exactly a blow your socks off meal. The downtown location and the view from the balcony overlooking Adams Street keeps me coming back. That said, the tariff on membership is steep and I am happy to be a guest of members or event attendee rather than a member of this establishment. The food here has never impressed me. There are better places to dine in Tallahassee for a memorable foodie experience. What you get at the Governors Club - whether in the lounge or the main bar -- is the sense of "Tallahassee-insider-ness" , for whatever that sense may be worth to you. Basically, this is a private club experience with all that sort of "clubbiness" entails. With this club atmosphere, you get valet parking and worn carpets. There are certain days of the year when sitting on the upstairs balcony with a drink overlooking Adams Street is absolutely the place to be. We came to the kentucky derby event here and what a fabulous time we had! Definitely the ultimate club experience! Very accommodating, social distanced and they made the guest list small. Pretty unimpressive private club that is way too smoke filled. Similar clubs in other cities such as the Austin club are much classier, cleaner, and interesting. I suppose for a place like Tallahassee the Club is great, but it is not what it could be. They could also use more chairs & tables, and they really need to turn up the air filters! This is 2010, and even at club that allows cigars, I know that better air filtration is available. I've been to this club a few times and have always really enjoyed myself. This past weekend I was lucky enough to have a table overlooking the down town get down prior to the FSU vs UF football game. The food selection at the buffet was fantastic. Service was great, everyone was very friendly and attentive. After dinner we headed down into the lounge, which I did not find smoky at all even though many people were smoking cigars. Again, great service and a nice selection of wine. A few friends invited me out so thought I'd give it a try. We shared the mac and cheese with lobster, which actually had penne instead of mac. It was decent. We also split the fried green tomatoes. They were pretty good but I liked them better at Kool Beanz Cafe. I had never heard of a Pittsburg style ribeye so decided to try. Holy cow what a waste of a steak. What it equated to was seasoning the ribeye and then charring the heck out of it. It's the sort of accident that happens when you grill out. I can't imagine burning a steak like this on purpose. Service was pretty good though I would have expected better for club only establishment. Nice to have experienced, but not tops on my list for the future. read more

As a guest, I went to this private club year and half ago and the food and was amazing. Came back the last two weeks with my friend who is a member but all of sudden the meal was disappointing and the service wasn't good as i expected. They must have change chefs or managers because this place isn't prestigious anymore! Next time my friend and I are just going to eat at sage. read more

The Governors Club is probably the place I most visit in Tallahassee during my leisure time. That being said, I believe it should actually be divided into three venues. Allow me to explain: This is not only a members-only club, but it also has a restaurant and a separate cocktail lounge. As such, I would prefer to rate each one separately, but since I can't, I'll go ahead and average my ratings for each into one. I'll start with the restaurant, the Governors Club Grille. If this was its own venue, I would award the Grille 4 stars. No doubt this is one of Tallahassee's finer restaurants. Indeed, there are other restaurants in town that I can argue are more luxurious and have better food, but nobody beats the Grille in terms of service. Hosts and waiters alike, some of whom have worked there for years, are trained to recognize members and refer to them by name. They are absolutely professional and go out of their way to make sure that club members and their guests are treated like royalty. I can only recall one time that there was a problem with an order, and this was rectified quickly and to my complete satisfaction by an apologetic server. The decor is a bit outdated: the interior of the restaurant could use an overhaul, although I'd caution management to preserve and incorporate some original, vintage elements (i.e., original floors, ceiling, etc.). Although there are other restaurants in Tallahassee with "better" food, you can never go wrong with the Grille in this regard. The food will always be anywhere between "very good" and "outstanding." In fact, they serve what what I consider to be the best dessert in Tallahassee: the "Smoked Brownie S'mores in a Jar." The best. No joke. Next is the Governors Club Lounge. Forget the Capitol or those smoke-filled back rooms you see in movies. The "GC Lounge" is where the real wheeling and dealing of Florida state government happens. But more importantly, it offers the best selection of quality drinks in town with service as good or better than the Grille. The servers and bartenders know the regulars and their tastes. It is modern and spacious with comfortable bar stools, couches and tables. Two private meeting rooms toward the back can be reserved or taken as desired if available for fundraisers or secret political meetings. No doubt this is Tallahassee's most luxurious bar--bar none, and the prices reflect it. But it's still cheaper than your average bar in Miami. I would award the GC Lounge 5 stars without hesitation. My only complaint is that the rules were changed recently forcing me to wait until after 7pm to smoke my cigar. Meh. The third and final component of the Governors Club is the members-only club itself. Membership here grants access to the Clubhouse's library and various meeting rooms as well as access to the Grille and Lounge. Some of the benefits I have taken advantage of include the club's valuable reciprocity with other members-only clubs around the world. This is useful for people who travel often, especially to places such as New York and Chicago that have reciprocal clubs with hotels attached to them. Also, membership allows me to valet park, which is extremely valuable during legislative session and when there are events downtown such as concerts or festivals. During Downtown-Getdowns and other outdoor events, members can hang out on the second-floor terrace overlooking Adams Street, which is a great place to view the crowds and concerts below. Club membership offers other benefits, but these are some I personally take advantage of. Like the Grille, the Clubhouse itself can use some updating, but it's still very pleasant. I'd award the Club itself 4 stars. In short, I enjoy my Club membership, but it's not for everyone. If you need a place to socialize for business or are involved with the political process in Tallahassee, I would absolutely recommend joining. The $1500 initiation fee and $110 per month dues are not unreasonable for a club like this. read more

It's not often I get to enjoy fine dining in a private club setting. I had a memorable experience here in Tallahassee at the Governor's Club. The food was great the service prompt given the amount of time I had. My steak was prepared just the way I had asked, I'm picky about that. The follow up by the server was great but not too much. Good friendly staff and the location is prime. Parking was a challenge on the day we were there, but not the fault of the club. I'd go back, I hope Liam takes me!! read more

I recently attended the Governor's Club for a continuing education meeting and social. The private space was quiet and functional for our needs. The service was extremely professional. The food was delicious, with many declaring the chocolate chip cookies to be the best they'd ever had! My favorite was the bacon vinaigrette, served hot. So good. I'd highly recommend this site for private functions. As the head of our CE group just joined the Governor's Club, hopefully we'll be back soon. read more

If we could award the Governors Club Ten Stars we would. Our only regret was waiting so long to join even though we wished we were members every time we glanced at the beautiful front doors and the mysterious Balcony up above. After perusing the other reviews, we came to the conclusion that seeking membership is the most memorable way to adore this fine establishment and every single person who works here. From the very first time we spoke with Allison about joining we were treated royally, and we felt that the initiation fee and monthly dues were extremely fair. The stateliness of the grand foyer was only exceeded by the sweetness of the Hostess and the the elegance of the Grille, and we were so pleased to soak in all the beauty every single time we came. And then there was the outstanding service and warmth we grew to love when greeted by Anna. Many of the servers were terrific FSU students as well as Greg and many others. Branden was very special too, and he is now a great manager. Amazing cocktails, including five dollar offerings of the month never let us down, and then Paul took us on an amazing wine journey every time we drank up his expertise. The delectable menus and food quality, and the lovely presentations made us happy and satiated EVERY time we had the pleasure of dining at The Club. Chef's Renfroe and Rodriguez are top notch and not only always aim to please....they do! The possibilities are endless when you join The Governors Club beginning with all of the very special events held all year long. Wine tastings and wine dinners and many five course food journeys are so much fun, and showcase the Chef's many talents as well as a night of great camaraderie The birds eye view from the awesome balcony, along with the many themed delicious buffets make football weekends a thrill. You will not find another experience in Tallahassee that comes close to becoming a member here. If you desire to Eat, Drink and Be Merry any time you choose, and be treated like family by everyone inside these welcoming walls, The Governors Club is a must!
