We were very happy with our meal at the Athenian...we both ordered a gyro platter and it was well prepared. They serve the Gyro deconstructed...they supply the components and you get to make them as you wish. It was terrific. The tsaziki was very rich, the feta smooth and creamy, and the greens and tomatoes were very tasty. We had one small glitch: our meal took a long time to arrive, much longer than you should expect. Our waiter corrected the issue on the spot and we left very happy with her service. The restaurant was adequately appointed, well kept and comfortable seating. Solid recommend. read more

This place has been around since the early 70s. That says a lot, but all of it isn't positive in my opinion. Billings seems to have a very large elderly population based on my few visits to the city for work. I think this is a Greek restaurant that will appeal to that older audience and many of them probably want the comfort that comes from those old familiar dishes that never change. I ordered the Dolmas. They are called Stuffed Grape Leaves on the menu and they are offered in either a no meat variety and one with ground meat. These are chunky little Dolmas! They are served with a sauce on top of them. The sauce was slightly gelatinous, translucent and almost flavorless. I have seen recipes for Dolmas that include a yogurt garlic sauce. This didn't look like a yogurt sauce as it was translucent and had more of a yellow tinge. This sauce accomplished one thing more than anything else, it made the Dolmas harder to eat. I couldn't pick them up with my hand without getting messy with the sauce. I ended up eating them with fork and knife, which was frustrating and awkward. The stuffing was not flavorful. They only provided a very small slice of lemon that got me through the first Dolma. They didn't provide Tzatziki sauce with them so I actually resorted to adding salt, which I've never done with Dolmas before. I was not happy with this dish and I don't recommend it. I also got a Gyro, they provide a pronunciation guide on the menu, yet the octogenarians at the table next to me still called them "gyroscope" minus the "scope." The Gyro is served wide body style in a very loose wrap. The main toping is iceberg lettuce. Lettuce does nothing good for a Gyro in my opinion. On the very front lip they place a single slice of tomato and that is the extent of the tomato. There are also red onions and Tzatziki sauce, which they refer to as Tazik (I think) on the menu. It took a few bites before I got to the Tzatziki sauce, but once I got there I was very pleasantly surprised. Very above average Tzatziki sauce. Overall I enjoyed the Gyro. I would ask for it without lettuce next time. read more

I really enjoyed this place. Great vibe inside. The food was good, the service was fairly quick and the prices are not bad. We ordered a saganaki for the table and then all ordered the gyro pita with cheese and taziki (sp?) sauce with a side of fries. The saganaki didn't come with anything, so we had to ask for a small Pita to eat with it. The gyro was delish, but huge. You could def share it with someone. And the fries were lightly seasoned. We love greek food and were very excited to try The Athenian. Its a cute restaurant. Pictures of Greece are in huge murals on the walls below arches. The acoustics of the room are fabulous and voices echo and can become quite loud during busy hours. Service is hit and miss. Its either fabulous or non existent. Thats really my only complaint. The dolmas are not what Im accustomed to but theyre ok. The pita bread they have is wonderfully soft and pairs perfectly with their tzatziki sauce and gyros. This quaintly designed restaurant nestled in the downtown area of Billings has you stepping into Athens. Ok maybe not quite that far but the atmosphere is definitely pleasant and homie. The service was good, speedy, and friendly. We ordered 5 Gyros (Yee-Ros, according to the menu). The chicken with zaziki sauce and feta. The Chicken was a bit dry but still good. (They don't have lamb which i think makes for the best Gyros but i did enjoy the beef. i had mine with the zaziki sauce and feta, my only comment is that there weren't enough onions. If you aren't an onion lover than it probably would be perfect. The boys each had chicken with the spicy bbq sauce and they enjoyed them! All in all we liked the restaurant and will return at some point when we are craving a Gyros and i am not in the mood to make them myself using lamb. Finally, the price for our 5 Gyros and one order of fries, which was plenty (the boys weren't that hungry) was $47 . . . Not too terrible. read more

Wow. Hold the phone. Drop everything. This Greek food is amazing. Let's ignore the fact there is no music in the dining room-it was weird for two seconds and then I realized how nice it was to talk and enjoy a meal without a noise distraction. The cook is a Greek mother, the husband was also there, in pretty sure the server/FOH was their daughter and son. It was amazing and adorable and authentic. We had the veggie platter and the falafel gyro. The meat dishes looked authentic and awesome also but we are vegetarians. Anyways-the dolmas were wonderful, served warm and fresh. The pita was freshly baked-crisp edges and soft inside, the hummus was also wonderful, not too much tahini-not too watery-just right. The olives have pits, people. They make the salad amazing. The falafel was fantastic. Not at all greasy and not too dry. I will come here regularly for the rest of my residency in Billings. Don't forget to read the family's story on the menu. It's wonderful. That said, my husband and I, from Whitefish, MT are vegetarians and this place was one of the few places in Billings that has a lot of options for vegetarians. We thought the food was amazing. We ended up here after a rough hour of trying to find a new place to eat. Our first choice was closed on Monday, second place looked a little sketchy so we heard Athenian had a decent gyros. We sat ourselves and were in somewhat of a bad mood because we were so hungry. When our server came over and dropped our menus on the table and walked away with out saying a word we literally started laughing. The food was decent, had good flavor and was priced pretty well so we will probably come back for a quick gyro. It only upset me when ten minutes after asking for boxes (I would have finished my food, had she brought the extra pitas we asked for) I went to the counter to get them and was told "I'll bring them in a minute" and then it took another 5.
