As we were walking through the town, we noticed this little place called the bad ass Café! We looked it up on yelp and we're like oh God three stars should we pass? I'm happy we didn't because we really enjoyed the atmosphere. I know an American going to a new American restaurant in Ireland is a little bit weird maybe not, but the music they were playing was pretty good. It was very old-school Americano kind of style. Nothing like it is today. So if you want to get the nostalgia of a little bit of America of what it used to be definitely come on in and check it out. We were greeted by the bartender look like he was the only one taking care of everybody. Came up and told us the special and the special that we chose was the fish and chips. This place is really great because not only do you get the fish and chips at a great deal you get a pint of beer included! I believe it came out to be about €20 but that has been the best deal that I could get the whole time I was in Ireland! My partner ordered a tonic and asked for some lime and was provided was a big bottle of lime juice. Check out the photo. The fish came out with two pieces. They were perfectly flaky, and the french fries were actually pretty crispy, unlike some places we visited in Ireland the french fries were really floppy and were baked rather than deep-fried. There are different specials on the lunch menu and I believe that the lunch menu goes until 5 PM. So if you're looking for a little bit of nostalgia and a great deal, check this place out while you're walking through the streets. read more

It is located in the same Temple Bar neighborhood. On my bar-hopping route, it was the 3rd stop. Live Irish band playing late last night and the crowd overflowed into the street within the Temple Bar District. This afternoon we returned for a cold Irish Smithwicks Pale Ale and relaxed while listening to the Irish band play without the massive crowd. The old Guinness rum barrels were used as customer tables. The bar was Key West style with paper money stapled to the wall with written notes in ink. Loved this intimate concept with a little hello from every country. The walls on both sides of the staircase leading up to the bathrooms have pictures with mug shots of famous musicians. The gender assigned bathroom was clean but very basic. The name is perfect for the name of the bar - BAD ASS. read more

I would like to address a complaint over a situation that happened last night. My wife and I stayed and drank all night long at the pub, we loved the live music, but when the bar was closing we headed to the door, we just stepped out when my wife, that have kidney issues decided to use the restroom before we go home. The bouncer allowed us to get back, but we were caught up surprised when a woman, Brazilian staff just started screaming at us, that we couldn't use the restroom. Im front of everyone she did it, we felt humiliated even after stayed all night long there. We are not going to come back, and for sure we're gonna spread the lack of courtesy and care for the clients in all pages we could. And I know that after the death of the client it won't be good for you. It's disgusting the way you treat your own clients. read more

Service was slow, my pizza, the "Funky" was very good..... BUT, the bathroom attendant staring at you while to try to use bathroom..... extremely not necessary. 100% a turn off and doesn't make you for comfortable at all. Creepy as heck. Frequently returning here, usually the first thing returning from airport in the evening. Open late, friendly staff, good music and just the best chicken wings in town. Their cider marinated spareribs are amongst the best in town too. If you're on a tourist trip through temple bar on a weekend and feel the other bars are just too crowded Bad Ass may still have a spot, so give it a try! I recently came back from my dream vacation to Dublin, Ireland. I liked this spot for a few reasons - the menu was pretty good (they have really good burgers if you're looking for something to go with your Guinness) and there was live music on both floors! The musicians were even taking requests. This is a place I would highly recommend for tourists who are looking for some fun in Temple Bar. This is a really fun place to eat - right in the heart of temple bar. It's casual and there's always a great atmosphere. It's mostly American style food - burgers, pasta, pizza, southern fried chicken etc. Just simple easy food. This would be a great place for kids or families, but at the same time you could go here for a few drinks and a meal with your mates. Last time I was here I had the pizza and it was really good. My favourite thing about here is how they take the orders - there's little lines running overhead and when they take your order they put the piece of paper in like a little box/cup thing, attach it to the line and then pull the string. The Bad Ass Cafe is somewhere I'd wanted to eat for ages, so what better time to tuck into some hardcore beefy burgers than on a huge struggle of a hungover day? At the moment they're doing an earlybird dinner special from 5-7pm - 9.80 for a starter and a main. Now I'm not usually the biggest meat eater and would usually be too ashamed order anything like buffalo wings or spare ribs, but the delicate state of my stomach necessitated it, and besides, I wanted the authentic Bad Ass experience. So the friendly staff sent a serving of buffalo wings my way. I've got to say, I was impressed, and might not turn my nose down at them so much in future. Pretty damn good feed, and generous serving for a starter. Then on to the main, where I went for another signature dish - the cheeseburger. I'm not sure whether it was the taste of the burger or the rapid decline in my ability to deal with life in general (which I find often happens the day after you've consumed your body weight in alcohol) but I wasn't able to get through the burger. At all. I just couldn't stomach the thing. The bread was too soft, the cheese too cheesy, the chips too fat-saturated... However I did enjoy the overall vibe of this very family-friendly restaurant and would go there again for pre-pub eats with a bunch of mates. Going to The Bad Ass Cafe really brings it all back for me. My parents must have brought us other places when we were small, but The Bad Ass Cafe is the place that really sticks in my mind, probably because of the pulley system by which they send your order to the kitchen, but also because of the brass horseshoes that lead to the doorway. Once you saw them, that's when you got excited, because you realised where it was that you were going. Plus there was the name. 'Ass' in the title. Hee hee hee. But enough of this nostalgia trip. In the present day and age, The Bad Ass Cafe is a damn fine restaurant. Nice food, but in a really casual setting. They do fairly standard fare - burgers, pizza pasta, and they do a fairly serviceable Caesar salad. It's more of a place to go to lunch with friends than on a date or anything. My abiding memory of The Bad Ass cafe is the pulley system that enabled waiters to attach orders to a clip and whizz them across the restaurant, above diners' heads, to the kitchen. As a child I was pretty mesmerised by this invention. Ever since then, I'm always a little disappointed to see waiters just using their two legs to get orders to the kitchen - there's nothing mesmerising about legs. This is an OK place here in Dublin. There are soooo many choices here,that you never really know what to pick. Since we were here for so many days in a row, this was one choice since we had walked by it quite a bit. Anyway, live music and that was nice. Not so loud as you could not hear each other talk either ,which was another plus. Food was so so ,not the best, but not the worst either. I think the worst went to the Bleeding Horse,but that is another story for another day. Drinks were nice,service was a bit slow. I hadn't been in Bad Ass for some years and decided to have a quick bite with my wife for old time sake. It was sunday afternoon and I couldn't believe how shabby the place had become. I had the 'bad ass burger' and my wife the veggie burger; both were served with the kind of frozen chips you would expect in a college canteen and no side salad. The burgers were tasty but would not be anywhere as good as other burger establishments and wow were they expensive. I don't think the owners of Bad Ass realise there is a recession going on as there were no specials on offer.The draught beer wasn't working and the cola on offer was a small glass of splash cola and no refills. The biggest annoyance on this my last visit to the Bad Ass Cafe was the service charge of 10% added to our bill which always pi££es me off will always make me wait and take all my change with me. Not quite "Bad Ass" Price: The price has increased dramatically over the last six months. While other places are sensibly lowering their prices, the owners here have it backwards. Atmosphere: Meh, it's cafe style. Some people like the quirky display, but I find it almost like a cross between Eddie Rockets and a canteen. Service: I think the service here is rotten. The last time I went I had one of the rudest waitresses ever, as she clearly didn't want to be there. Previous times, the server was just generally indifferent and slow. Food: The food isn't bad. It isn't great, but it's definitely a nudge above average. When the prices were more reasonable, it was a great value - now I'd say it is mostly a pass as for the same price you can get a nice meal and pleasant service elsewhere. My dinner experience: I've been here about 4 times in the past year. The first two times were nice, but then management seemed to implement a lot of changes which have really ruined the place. First off, the wait staff treats you with indifference. They aren't overtly rude, but they are not friendly. They act with the same passion you'd expect from a civil servant at a driver license testing centre. The menu is fun. I enjoy the wings, but they can be a bit stingy with the bleu cheese. When I've asked for more, they silently comply. The burgers are, in my opinion, over-cooked. If you ask for medium rare, it shouldn't come back crispy. Keep that in mind when ordering the burgers. The pepperoni calzone is nice, but they do not put a lot of pepperoni in it. Expect to eat a lot of dough. read more

The young man wanted to seat us at a high top and we politely asked to be seated at a low table (because of a party member having back issues). He got annoyed so he gave us a tiny table squashed in a corner. I guess that fixed us for asking for a different table! We waited a long time and finally the waitress came by to take our order which consisted of 2 pints, gnocchi entree and spaghetti with seafood entree. Surprisingly our meals came out within minutes after ordering. My gnocchi was terrible and I could not eat it, absolutely horrible. It was very chewy like gum and had absolutely no taste. My husband said his meal was okay. Waitress never came back to check on us. We waved her down to get our check and then she took off again. She was standing by the door talking to another waiter and would not come to collect our check so we stood up and she still didn't come over to us till we started walking towards her. One of the best pizzas I have had in Dublin. Drinks were great and the service was prompt. Music was loud and they had a good crowd.

Sat outside and we were sitting there for around 10 minutes before we were welcomed or given menus. We both ordered Caesar salads which were quick to arrive and absolutely delicious! We moved onto drinks and were told that they only had one cocktail and one shot out of the entire menu (not sure about spirits and bottles, we never asked). Vodka shooters were on the menu but they had none of them either. I came here a couple of years ago often for drinks and their standards have obviously lowered significantly! If you're looking for food, come here but if you're looking for good service and good drinks, look elsewhere! read more

Do not waste your time at this place!!!! The service is HORRIBLE and the food is not good. Out of Guinness too. We went in there because of the live music, we got a booth and ordered our drinks when the 2 band members stopped & packed up. Our aggravated waiter said the next ones will come on in 4 hours. My co-worker has a dairy allergy & ordered their big burger without cheese, she & the waiter repeated it 3x. it came with lots of melted cheese which she had to remove because our waiter never returned and there were no other employees for 30 min. The fish/chips were a disappointment & their "homeade" tarter sauce was just mayo! We asked for 4 separate checks but since we had to chase down another employee, he said they could not do that. My first and possibly only trip to Dublin and I didnt get to experience the flying orders through the wires strung all over the ceiling. Damn! I guess the concept is that the order is placed on a clip attached to a wire and "flown" over to the kitchen. Neato! After i wiped the tears from my eyes (kidding) I ordered a mixed green salad with goat cheese and a pizza. OMG this was the best goat cheese I've ever had. Melty in my mouth and full of freshness. Now, about the pizza: I am from Chicago and, well, we have the best pizza ever so I surprised myself when I ordered pizza in another country. I have to say it was realllllllly good! Crispy, pizza oven goodness! I enjoyed my solo meal with a Guinness, which by the way, is superior to the Guinness they serve in the states. To me The Bad Ass Cafe is a landmark in Temple Bar. The food is of the pizza and burgers variety and is very reasonable. This place holds good memories for me and it always has an upbeat atmosphere anytime I'm there. The food is good, but not amazing, but again it's really the experience that is worth it. Servers are good and it's fun to see them put your order in a small holder and pulley it to the kitchen. It's a good place for lunch as Temple Bar can get messy at night with drunks spilling on to the street. read more

I was recommended to go here by a friend and was shocked that I had never been before, considering how long the cafe has been around for! Anyway, I popped in for a bite to eat and had a small pepperoni pizza washed down with some coke and all I can say is: pure heaven! Although service was a little slow, the wonderful meal made up for it and the atmosphere is very nice. Cute and quaint! However, the reason for the poor service was because only one waiter was serving meals and he seemed very flustered - at one stage he even dropped a plate on the floor! Received menus and PLENTY of time to look at them....had to flag down a waitress to order and then again because we forgot to order one of the sides. It then came out way later. Had to wait at least 20 minutes after finishing for someone to take the plates and for us to get the check (which we went to the bar to get). Really slow and poor service. It seemed like there was only one waitress, but she was not too concerned with serving people on time. She was chatting up the people next to us and a few other tables (we were not the only ones neglected) quite a bit. My friend got bangers and mash which were listed as one of the favourites of the place and he really liked them. However, I got the veggie burger which warm but was served with cold (almost frozen) tomatoes and sauces (mayo, ketchup and guac??). The burger itself tasted good though. The fries were fine. Onto those nachos that were ordered late....gross. It says it comes with 'sweet chili and cheese' but these both look like they came out of squirt bottles and extra cheese was thrown on to make it look real. Not sweet at all either. I also got a drink that had blue curacao and was supposed to have a touch of grenadine but it was purple.... I guess this place used to be really good and then they realized that with their location it is mostly tourists so people won't be likely to be coming back anyway. I met some old friends who were visiting from out of town at The Bad Ass Café. They had arrived earlier to eat, so we were here to share a few beverages post meal. They commented that the food was nice. The Bad Ass Café had employed a guy on a guitar and he was playing some great live covers. But it was far far too loud. A conversation that involved everyone at the table could not be had. Our friends chose The Bad Ass Café because they thought loud music would not be an issue here (it was for them the evening before at another location). We moved to another bar soon after everyone was done with dessert. I must add that that I did notice that there were tourists here who did enjoy the live music. So it does have a market I guess. I always thought of this place as a tourist trap for Americans, yes even though it serves American food, because the two times I have eaten here, it was packed with Americans like me. Since only Dubliners have reviewed it thus far, I guess I am proven wrong. However, it is nice to have a relatively inexpensive place in Temple Bar that you can go to with difficult-to-please people (i.e. my mother who had never been out of the country and thus landed in Ireland like it was an alien planet). Bad Ass Grill does bad ass burgers and steaks. Ok, so it's not exactly fine dining but that's not its game. Which is just as well, as the clientele isn't about la-di-da. No, the customers are an eclectic mix of families, friends, first dates, blind dates and blind drunk dates. My dad and I had one of the two shared starters on the menu-the charcuterie plate. It was tasty, whilst leaving us plenty of room for the main event. For me that meant 12 pure ounces of fillet steak crowned with peppercorn sauce and arm in arm with creamed potatoes. My dad opted for a chargrilled burger with a side order of fries. Delicious as it was, it really did for us, leaving no room at all for dessert. Shame really, we'd wanted to try the strawberry pizza. So, I was disappointed a few months back when the badass café closed it's doors. Well, to my surprise, it was reopened not so long ago, albeit under the same name. However, don't be fooled by the nice change in decor (classic, English-style pub-atmosphere on the ground floor, weird Ikea showroom-chic on the top floor). We arrived in the new entrance, and was immediately surprised by the new decor. A very dramatic change. However, that's not the only thing that has changed! The service, from the very first interaction with the staff was absolutely appalling. It took nearly 5 minutes to get noticed by a member of staff so that we could be seated (keep in mind at this stage, there were only 4 tables occupied, out of approximately 40). After we were seated, it took a further 25 minutes to get a menu (we only got offered one when someone tried to take our order). At this stage, we were tempted to just leave, however, I knew the food used to be great, so we thought we'd stick it out...how much worse could it get? Alot worse... Firstly, the menu was an unimpressive, 2 page, single-sided, mish-mash of bog-standard dishes with bog-standard descriptions. The price was OK, but where were all the great pizzas and burgers that once littered the menu of the old badass? Instead there were about 6 pizza varieties and a handful of burgers and sandwiches. After what was about another 20 minutes (we'd been here nearly an hour now, from the moment we walked in the door), I ordered the soup to start and the steak sandwich for the main. The waitress was polite. (I'm desperately trying to seek positives from the experience). 15 minutes later, I received an overly-reheated soup (slightly burned taste). With this I got a VERY generous, 4 triangles of bread. These triangles were about the size of a 2 euro coin, so small that the rock hard butter enveloped them. Needless to say, the starter was awful. I began to think that the badass cafe was no more... The steak sandwich arrived 30 minutes after finishing the soup (it took a glare to the chatty staff for the food to magically appear). This was a dish, of the standard one would find at a music festival. Smothered in onions, with microscopic layer of sauce. At least the cut of the steak was nice. The fries were clearly sitting under a heating lamp for a while, as they were crisp beyond belief. Also, I was not offered a refill of my drink at all (until I had to ask myself when getting the bill). The straw that broke the camels back - the ketchup. I'm not one to complain about what brand of ketchup is used, but this was clearly set to deceive. Heinz bottles were used, but it tasted (and looked) like tesco value tomato-flavoured liquid. It was vile( and definitely not Heinz) After that fiasco, I wanted to get out of there asap, so I asked for the bill from yet another of their staff members, and then realised that there were so many for such an empty restaurant and such bad service. Bring back the old badass cafe, with the quaint, yet unmistakably packed in, barnyard-esque feel, and the much better menu. Bring back the charming (and unique) ziplines that flew overhead with orders and people's change. Bring back the great menu pages that you could keep as a souvenir. Bring back the pizza selection. Bring back the nice and attentive staff. Disaster of a restaurant. Avoid at all costs. At least until they revert back to the old menu. read more
