What can I say besides yum! The lemon supreme cupcake is hands down my favorite dessert. Luscious lemon cake smothered with creamy lemon frosting and a lemon curd filling hiding inside to tantalize your tongue. The dutch letters are awesome, the lemon bars are great. Ordered a cute little cake for my dad's birthday. I called in the day before and they had my order waiting and ready to go when I arrived to pick it up the next day. The staff was super friendly and did a nice little bit of decorations on the cake. It was a simple cake, just chocolate with white frosting, but it was mighty delicious and my dad loved it. There are so many other bakeries in Des Moines that are not only delicious, but have friendly workers who make you feel appreciated. This is not one of those bakeries. This is, hands down, the best bakery for sweets in town. Forget all of those trendy cupcake shops and come here. I searched my phone for a photo of my staples from the Bake Shoppe - either the champagne cupcakes or the petit fours. I realize the reason I probably don't have any is because I gobble them up fast. Sometimes I treat myself to dessert and don't even have them pack them up to go. I have also used the Bake Shoppe to get custom cakes made and they were great tasting, too, and easy to work with on a design. Stop in to pick up a special office treat, to treat your self, or use them for your cake needs. This place is a gem in Des Moines and more people should be going here. read more

Horrible! The lady at the counter blatantly lied to me about the carrot cake! I asked her if the cake had nuts and/or raisins and she swore it didn't. My mother cut into the cake for Mother's Day today and we found that it is riddled with both nuts and raisins. That is absolutely pathetic to lie to a customer to get them to buy your cake. If you don't know the ingredients, go look it up! Such dishonest service. I will not be returning here. read more

YUM!!! I can't believe I live so close to this place! I'm going to be HYUGE. Stopped in yesterday to try the highly regarded champagne cake. In addition to the V day, heart shaped champagne cake, I also bought an apple Danish, two sticky buns, and a frosted V day sugar cookie. No lie, I smashed the cookie the moment I got in my car. It. Was. Delicious. I thought about saving the cake for today but I had it before dinner instead. Not the healthiest choice but, my fear was it would taste different tomorrow after sitting all night. I just couldn't risk it. I ate about half of my mini cake waiting to taste and feel the fireworks of the coveted champagne cake and it never happened :/. I didn't care for all the frosting or the stuff in the middle. It was too sweet, too much other stuff happening for me to actually taste the cake. I will try again though. It could just be this specific cake. The pastries on the other hand.. WHOA. Possibly better than La Mie. Mind. Blown. I saw a yummy looking orange roll number that I am determined to go back and try. Love the product. Hate the customer service. I just stopped in to buy items for Earth Day event today. I know they are busy with Mother's Day but I was treated like I was an inconvenience. I was the only customer in the store and came early to avoid the rush so that I wouldn't need to be rushed either. I ordered a cake shaped like a bible for my son's First Communion. I chose the design out of their book. The example in the book was for a girl, so I showed them a pic of another cake and asked them to use that color scheme with the Bible design. Apparently this was too complicated for them. When I picked up the cake it was all wrong--they decorated the book cake like a regular sheet cake and as a result the writing was crooked. The writing itself was badly done--chunky and inconsistent. The girl behind the counter basically said, too bad, nothing to be done now but here's $5 off. As I drove away dissatisfied, I called back and got a nice helpful person on the phone who said they would redo the cake. Great. I brought the cake back. I picked up the new cake three hours later and it STILL did not look like the sample cake! The writing was squished under a too large cross with an awkward area of white space on top. Worse yet, I ordered a marble cake and it was all chocolate. It was also dry and tasteless. The frosting was sugary and overly sweet. Neither aesthetically pleasing nor tasty. Never again. Do yourself a favor and drive a few paces down to HyVee. Their cakes are way better. I should add that I bought this cake from them in the past and it was perfect. We came to DesMoines yesterday so my son could interview at the Des Moines University's medical school. I was supposed to bake a cake -because both he and his wife were having birthdays within days of each other - but no time! So we yelped bakeries and the bake shoppe came up with great ratings. It was getting late but the proprietor of the Bake Shoppe graciously kept the doors open another 15 minutes just for us. We bought the carrot cake and had a wonderful birthday celebration!! I stopped by The Bake Shoppe today because I wanted some pretty cookies for a dessert tray for a ladies get-together tonight. They didn't have any "pretty cookies"( just yummy-looking big ones!) So I ended up with a dozen mini-petite fours. They looked picture perfect but were so sugary I almost couldn't eat them-granular sugar all over the bottoms. But the cake part was delicate and very tasty. I also got an orange yummy Danish with pecans ( just for me!) and it was exquisite !! This is the "go to" place for special occasion desserts. Love, love, love their petite fours. It is our family's routine birthday dessert. For my husband's bday this past January, I asked for something along a golf theme. They created little golf balls on grass. So fun! Can't think of anything they make that isn't delicious. Bars, cookies, crispier. Went the Friday before Easter and couldn't decide what to get. Even with many customers, the staff took the time to come out from behind the counter to help me decide. I called other bakeries on Saturday and they said it was too late to order. My son said the chocolate cake and the assortment of cup cakes were delicious. I have gone to this bakery for several years and ordered many cakes And other baked items from them on numerous occasions. They have always had an amazing assortment of items, which I would frequently stop by for a special treat. Recently the quality of their baked goods is not as good. Today I picked up my nephew and stopped by for a special treat after preschool. They had apparently just closed although the door was unlocked. They were waiting for somebody who Still need to pick up a cake. There were two women sitting behind the counter, so I didn't realize they were closed when I first walked in. I wanted to purchase some bread and get a special treat for my nephew. They were not very friendly and informed me that they were closed. Since they were both just sitting there and not doing anything productive it would've been nice if they could've at least sold me some bread. Apparently they Couldn't be bothered to help me, even though I could've paid cash or credit. As the quality of their products have gone down and they have virtually no customer service skills, it looks like I will need to find a new bakery. I called this bakery to place a special order for my newly initiated Kappa daughter at Drake University .I wanted something personal,wow and delicious .... And they delivered on all counts ! She was so excited when she received the personalized cookies with Greek .letters ,sorority name ,symbols,her name that she was like you are the best parents ever !! I canceled my $38 cake order because one of the women behind the counter was so hostile and condescending... My wife wanted a specific cake with one substitution (if possible) for her birthday. Though the substitution was easily doable according to one of the employees, this woman acted like I was asking for the moon. She then jumped down my throat for requesting it be decorated a certain way (not knowing that this particular cake didn't usually come decorated). Some business advice: when someone comes in to order a cake for SOMEONE ELSE that they clearly don't know much about, hold their hand and show them their options. DON'T jump down their throat and treat them like ignorant, unreasonable pieces of shit. I will not be returning. read more

Ordered a birthday cake for my daughters 16th BDay. Red Velvet with red butter cream flowers. They delivered it to our hotel, ON TIME, and the cake was amazing! Just talked to one of the decorators on the phone and she was horrendous. I had some questions about availability, pricing and design & she was super short with me. Not only is this information not avaiable on their website, but they don't have an email address that I could send all my questions to so its not like what I was asking were unreasonable. Based on the experience on the phone alone, I will not be giving them my business. My husband usually buys me some goodies (petit fours and mini-cakes) from the Bake Shoppe every year for my birthday since it is close to our home and they are generally pretty good. They also did cakes for our rehearsal dinner which were mediocre at best but I was willing to give them another shot since their pricing seemed reasonable. Ahhh...Their special-order Angel Food cake was ... Heavenly. (Ok, I said it. Sorry.) But truly, it was so divinely delicious. Having grown up with from-the-box or pre-baked supermarket versions, I was expecting a difficult to cut texture, sawing, hacking, and squishing the cake into submission to release a slice. Not with the The Bake Shoppe's version: It cuts like butter. Its taste was creamy, delicious, and not overly sweet. My husband picked up my birthday cake this afternoon. The decorations and writing were beautiful and the chocolate buttercream frosting was delicious. The actual cake is horrible. It is so dry that it falls apart when slicing. I was so embarrassed and told my guests they didn't have to eat it and they did not. Not one person finished a slice. I ordered my Easter cupcakes and carrot cake on March 18, 2016 to be picked up at 1:00 today. When I got there, there was sign on the door, "we are running two hours behind on cakes". I was sure that was not for me since I had ordered a week ago. Was I ever wrong. Then to add insult to injury, a lady behind me had ordered her cake yesterday to be picked up at 11:00 today. It wasn't ready but the manager was quickly putting it together for her. How does that work. My order was in a week ago. Also the lady ahead of me ordered a cake yesterday and hers was ready. Product may be outstanding but customer service is not reliable and ordered should be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Wow! We are big fans of Baru 66 but this the bakery is much better. We bought breakfast pastries from both one morning and the Bake Shoppe won hands down. We ordered an Orange Yum-Yum and a Bear Claw from the Bake Shoppe and from the Baru 66 Bakery, we had an Eclair and a chocolate Croissant. I also ordered a mini quiche from the Baru 66 bakery (wow, they really shine on those). That Orange Yum-Yum (hate the name, love the product) was so flavorful. The scone was not dry and hard to swallow but dense like Irish Soda Bread. The frosting was full or orange flavor and is now a favorite (I've had to join a gym). The Bear Claw was gone in seconds and my husband said it's the best he's ever had. The eclair from the Baru bakery was just okay. It was not all that flavorful. The croissant was very good. Flaky and airy with just enough chocolate to make it very memorable. All in all we have become fans of The Bake Shoppe. I will still stop at the Baru 66 Bakery for those mini quiches though. Do yourself a favor and get one of those Orange Yum-Yums from The Bake Shoppe - you'll thank me but your waist won't. read more

I am incredibly happy with these amazing ladies. I needed a last-minute cake for a three-year-old's birthday party. I asked them if they were familiar with my little pony, to which they rattled off the jingle and asked which character to model the cake after. They didn't know that in the last 24 hours my original cake had fumbled and a was terrified that I couldn't get one in time. They didn't know that one of my best friends had just died and I'd spent all night in the hospital saying goodbye. They didn't know my car had a flat tire that morning or that everything seemed to be going wrong. That cake was the first thing to go right and I can't express how incredible grateful I was. They were so incredibly nice. The cake was absolutely extraordinary. I got so many compliments and people wanting to know where it came from. I'm so glad that I found them. I'll never order a cake anywhere else. read more
