I picked up a birthday cake for myself from their daily bakes. There was a good selection and the service was fantastic. Very reasonably priced. The almond flavor was lovely. The cake balanced the sweetness of the icing.

My first impression of this shop was how tidy, welcoming, and clean it was! The staff immediately greeted me and told me to take my time picking something out (even though they were supposed to close in 5 minutes). I picked out an assortment of goodies, and they didn't disappoint. This place is a hidden gem!!

    Champagne cake

My parents would get me a champagne cake from here every year! Unfortunately I have moved out of the state but my parents are still in town. my mom turned 50 this year and I ordered her a champagne cake from here with a vintage style theme! She loved it, the cake was delicious as always, ordering was super easy and the staff was super helpful with everything and the cake was Beautiful !

This was a great find! All of the pastries were delicious...especially the cherry danish (which isn't pictured as we gobbled that up)! The turtle bar (top left) is gooey and delicious! I recommend giving this place a try. We did not try any of the cakes. And, the bread looked amazing, so we will be trying some of that next time.

I am upgrading my rating to five stars because I have come here a few more times since my last review and The Bake Shoppe has not disappointed me yet. When I visit Des Moines, I find myself craving the sweet goodies from this place. Since my last review I've tried their: peanut butter cookie-crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside (the way I like it!) boston creme cupcake- thin layer of chocolate on the top, cupcake filled with a light custard, and topped with a cherry (perfect for those that love chocolate but not too much of it)--the cake was very light (like angel cake but not overly sweet as angel cake can be) german chocolate cake- moist and chocolatey pumpkin bar--tastes like a pumpkin cake with the perfect amount of frosting on top And of course, time and time again, during each visit I HAVE to get their peanut butter rice crispy. It is still SUPER SUPER good!!! Prices for these goodies are usually $2 or less (unless you are ordering bread or a whole cake). The downside about The Bake Shoppe is that they close at 5pm. We arrived around 4:30pm and thats when a line started forming behind me! I think everyone else was trying to beat the closing time too!

The Bake Shoppe is our go-to for ordering cakes for special occasions. We love the pink champagne cake they have. It's so light and delicious! We even got our wedding cake through them as well. However there could be improvements in ordering and customization mechanics with some online mechanism. Currently it's all call-in or in-person ordering.

Holy Moly, this place has some great pastries! They are in a little strip mall which is great for parking. They have an nice variety of sweet goods so good luck making a decision! We went a box of random selections and were not disappointed by any of our choices. The cinnamon roll had great flavor and the sticky bun was super sticky just like it should be. Flaky cream horn, apple almond pastry, and turtle bar. Mmmmmm For those that complain about the 4 pm close, don't forget about the 6:30 am open. This means they have to get to the shop around 4:30 am to get things baked by opening. Give them a break. A 12 hour day isn't exactly slacking off, especially when you're at it 7 days a week. Now I'm going to go relax on my weekend away from work and enjoy my sugar coma.

Their claim of having Barbara's Champagne Cake is a joke. This cake does not come close to the cake I remember at Barbara's.

My boyfriend bought the 14-hour braised steak (rich peppercorn reduction & balsamic infused caramelized onions). We both wanted to try it so we split it in half and the half portion was plenty filling for each of us AND it was absolutely delicious! When I found out it was a local brand I had to go to Hyvee to try the other flavors. So far the other flavor I've tried is the Chicken Sun dried & cherry tomatoes in a basil béchamel. It was so good! I started with a half portion but it was so good I ate the other in the same sitting. That was a mistake on my part because I was too full eating the whole thing! The pie may seem small but it is plenty filling for two meals. The nutrition facts on the back are based on a half serving and at half size the caloric intake is over 400 calories. But it's to be expected because these things are so good! I can't wait to try the other different flavors I bought of PIE MATES from Hyvee.

I have pretty high standards when it comes to Turkish food though lol--I've had some of the best Turkish food in NY and in different cities throughout Turkey, so I definitely have a lot to compare it to. With that in mind, this place has been a bit hit or miss. There have been times when the food wasn't as fresh, was overly salted, and was overall pretty mid. But I've also had meals here where everything was really fresh, well-made, and genuinely good. I do really like the variety on their menu, especially because it goes beyond just BBQ and grilled meats. They have a good selection of other Turkish dishes, which I appreciate and makes me more likely to come back and try different things. Overall, I think it's a nice option to have in Iowa, and when they're on their game, the food is definitely worth trying.
