Dr. Harrison is a miracle worker. My son had received a severe concussion in October 2020. Afterwards, he was diagnosed with dysautonomia meaning many of his normal bodily functions were not working properly. For example, he couldn't sweat, his heartrate was irregular, he would pass out frequently, he was exhausted constantly. He was also diagnosed with other problems: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and Post-traumatic concussion syndrome. He had seen so many doctors. In fact, he had teams of doctors from our pediatrician's office, to neurologists at a San Francisco-based research hospital and additional specialists down the peninsula. For 15 months, we went to appointment after appointment with very little resolution. At one point, a doctor watched my son pass out (which looked like he had a seizure) on a tilt table test and he asked me how much medication my son was taking. None. We didn't know what was wrong, so we didn't know how to medicate him. Later my son passed out in a similar manner at the dentist office while getting x-rays. Dr. Allen is amazing at what he does. I came in not fully understanding what NUCCA was and left being very aware of how different it was to a full spine chiropractor. I've been disabled for a number of years with POTS and both chronic and recurrent muscle pain, especially neck pain and headaches, that worsened after physical activity or travel. Multiple rounds of physical therapy helped a little, but only temporarily. I began seeing Dr. Harrison eight months ago. A lot of things have improved - I can stand up and walk around without feeling instantly ill, I can sit at a computer twice as long, I was able to go on multiple outings with a visiting relative without feeling so sick and exhausted I'd have to go home in the middle of the first one. I can go for regular walks. I can plan to run errands and not have to put them off for days in hopes that I'd finally hit a day where I could run them. I'm considering trying to go back to work part-time, which I previously would not have thought possible. This review is way overdue! It's been almost three years since I first walked in to Dr. Harrison's office! I can't believe it's been that long. I Had severe shoulder pain and within 2 weeks it was completely eliminated! I had that pain for three months and was 2 weeks away from getting surgery on my shoulder when I decided to try one last option and that was Dr. Harrison! He saved my life, well, at least that's how it felt! I would have not been able to keep working if I had actually went and had surgery because it would have been impossible. If you are in pain it will be the best time and money you ever spent and surprisingly takes very little time to correct what feel like major issues sometimes as compared with traditional chiropractic. Dr. Harrison does amazing work. He is detailed, thoughtful and beyond knowledgeable about your body. He gets to the root of the problem so you and your family can begin to feel better quickly and with lasting results if you follow his recommendations. In addition, the office at the Balanced Atlas is beautiful, relaxing, and very clean. When I first met Dr. Harrison his practice in SF was relatively new and he had a booth at the fillmore jazz festival. I was skeptical by all the ailments he advertises that NUCCA can help. However, when I spoke to him, I quickly realized how intelligent he was and that his methodology was very logical. I am a speech pathologist and wanted to learn more for my patients so I invited him to do an in-service at our hospital and all the staff were blown away by his results, the research behind NUCCA and his level of analysis of each patient. I still did not fully understand how NUCCA worked until my 93 year old father in law was having spinal issues affecting his bowel and bladder and doctors wanted to operate. I immediately thought of Dr. Harrison and he was able to not only avoid the need for surgery but his posture and balance greatly improved along with his quality of life. Incontinence issues in the elderly can have so many terrible consequences and we are so relieved to have saved my father in law from those issues. That was about 2 years ago and he now only goes every 2 or 3 months as needed for a quick adjustment to help keep him aligned. I can't believe every chiropractor is not mandated to learn this process. In addition to my father in law I finally decided to go to Dr. Harrison myself last year after doing traditional chiropractor and physical therapy multiple times in the past years for 2 back injuries which also affected my hip rotation. I felt although the other practitioners were some of the best in their field, I wasn't fully healing the underlying problem. Because Dr. Harrison was not covered by my insurance I did not go when I should have and deeply regret I lived with unnecessary pain for so long. Since I began NUCCA last year I feel amazing. I very rarely have pain in my back or hips unless I do something to re-injure myself. I also started pilates to strengthen my core which helps keep everything in place an prevents re-injury when your abs are strong. My husband was so surprised by my father in law's results and my own that he decided to visit Dr. Harrison too for mild scoliosis, plantar fasciitis and some other pains for tight muscles due to poor alignment. He unfortunately did not go regularly in the beginning due to his hectic schedule and so it took longer for him to see results. I consider myself someone into and a practitioner of the healing arts and with a strong eye towards scientific validity (had one too many snake oil schemes). Chiropractic work (up until now) had in my mind been at best a nice massage plus placebo and at worst a dangerous and scary venture (crack my bones? No thanks!). So when I met Dr Allen I was both skeptical and intrigued. Here's a guy who is both down to Earth, passionate and incredibly knowledgeable and professional about his work, and has amazing "bed-side" manner to boot (a very valuable asset when you are literally moving people's bones). I came to him to essentially test out another healing modality, mostly for emotional and spiritual wellbeing, and also to see if he could do anything about my chronic hip pain. I had broken my ankle a few years ago the fact that the leg was now shorter was a fact that could only be changed by surgery, I was told. But with my first NUCCA appointment (which, btw, is NOTHING like traditional chiropractic, no cracking at all!) my legs were the same length!! I thought it was still a scheme for a while, somehow my body conforming with the placebo effect, but then I started to notice real changes. For me it was my mood. Suddenly I wasn't so overwhelmed by strong emotions. It felt like I could still feel anger, sadness, despair, but there was some space around it, and I didn't get sucked in. And my hip has been progressively better and better too. Prior to coming to Dr Harrison, I didn't know there are so many different types of chiropractic styles. However, after my first visit, I am sold! Being hypermobile myself, I didn't think the traditional cracking and pulling would be beneficial for my body, so I like how the NUCCA approach is gentle yet effective. You go through an initial screening and x-rays to measure the imbalances, and Dr Harrison explains the scans to you to help you understand what is going on and what he plans to do. I started with a 6 degree tilt in my head and a slight rotation in my pelvis, and it was helpful to see my imbalances visually so I have an idea on where I started and where I need to be. After just 3-4 months, I was able to hold my alignment! There is a parking lot by the clinic so it's convenient. Pain free, yay! Ok, so.I come from the school that thinks chiropractors are voodoo practitioners. Snake oil salesmen. Quacks. This probably stems from some early childhood experiences, and has no basis in reality. Actually, I can't say probably, anymore. I'm sure of that after working with Allen! (although I reserve judgment on all other quacks...er, I mean chiropractors, out there...keep reading) Are you like me? Then Allen is your man. It took him a long time to get me in, but what really attracted me was the more scientific approach. X-rays? Check. Analysis? Check. An end date to your care rather than weekly "adjustments" that you will need ad infinitum? Check. I hate anything I have to take on continuously, and many success stories were told to me about the # of visits needed to feel better, week after week, with The Balanced Atlas. So, I took the plunge, and regret that I waited so long. I don't know about you, but I stare at a device of some sort all day long. The ergonomics of my daily life are horrifying. Now, Dr. Allen is a "nucca" practitioner. It's special. It deals with the top of your spine, where your back meets your neck. I discovered Dr Harrison 3 months after sustaining blunt head trauma, which herniated 2 disks and was causing me near constant 8-10 level nerve pain. At the time, Neck & Spine specialists, as well as Neurologists were telling me my only options were to sever the nerves, get numbing injections, or stay on unhealthy nerve numbing antipsychotics, possibly indefinitely. My skull was so sensitive to touch I could barely wear a lightweight hat without my entire head throbbing. My herniated disks were being exacerbated by nearly every arm movement. Did you know there are different types of Chiropractic care: The study of? I've been to over a dozen dr's and it's always been "chiropractor". NUCCA, developed over 50 years ago is completely different then any treatment I've ever had before. Only one vertebra is the focal point, C1 or the Atlas. I just went through the whole initial first visit where Dr. Harrison gets all the data then studies it. Which makes sense over just going into any office and getting twisted and cracked without even seeing what is going on inside. I wouldn't go so far to say everything is in perfect balance and I'm all healed. There's only so much a single visit can accomplish and I'm not looking for a miracle, just better quality of life. I have known Dr Harrison since he was practicing in Va Beach, VA. I absolutely love NUCCA. I am a 10 year vet of rugby and a healthcare professional so I understand the importance of caring for one's body. I am not a "crack your spine" fan of chiropractics. I've not been a fan of Chiropractic as I had a bad experience with a chiropractor many years ago that took almost a year of recovery. However, the Nucca form of Chiropractic that Dr, Allen performs and specializes in is truly revolutionary. He doesn't crack your back in the conventional nature of chiropractic. Nucca is a soft touch approach that seems to be developed from a "top down" logic (i.e., if the neck is aligned, the rest of the back will follow suit). I don't really understand how it works, all I know is that it does work. And since he doesn't have to twist my head in weird and potentially dangerous ways, I feel completely safe and relaxed with what he's doing. His technique has resolved various issues I've had with my neck and back. I've even gained new degrees of neck rotation. Dr. Allen Harrison is the chiropractor of all chiropractors! From a healing bedside manner to one of the best, most effective, long-lasting forms of chiropractic care around. NUCCA is so specific and treats the upper cervical vertebrae. If things aren't aligned up here, it doesn't matter what you do to the rest of the spine; you need the top axis to be aligned. He basically treats the root of it all for spinal alignment. His methods are very well examined and measured too, so even the most skeptical person cannot deny the positive effects that happen. We visited Dr Harrison for my son Victor, who was an infant of about 11 - 12 months old at the time. Dr Harrison has helped him tremendously! Since he was born my son had several health complaints: cows milk protein allergy and he had many ear infections (5 infections within 6 months). When he was about 11 months old he had a 'stiff neck' and was crying so much because of pain. The pediatrician had no clue and told us he just had a stiff neck. Then we started our search for a chiropractor specialized in babies/children and/or neck. Before we found Dr Harrison, we visited two other chiropractors who did not help him (or perhaps even made things worse). Dr Harrison did such an amazing job. He took time to hear about all Victor's health issues, and he explained how ear infection and allergies are related to a misaligned spine/neck vertebrae. He also took time to build trust with Victor, make him laugh, so he could treat him. Dr Harrison is very knowledgeable and has a very calm friendly energy.
