i came to dr. colman with musculo-skeletal and neural complications that sprouted from a tailbone injury. most daily tasks bothered me, and given i've always been the type to suppress burdens in life, i went several months denying the pain and assuming it'd work itself out. of course, it only worsened as time went on. my work as a personal trainer suffered, and i stopped exercise entirely since i couldn't do anything without my low back/tailbone hurting. i finally let my ego take a back seat and went to see matt when my tolerance of the pain passed a threshold where i could sense that my entire quality of life was suffering; lethargy, irascibility, and apathy were part of daily life. he explained to me that the connections to previous injuries and habits were likely playing a role in my emotional and physical state. he demonstrated several methods of supporting his hypothses (neurological relay work from brain to tissue, nutritional supplements, body work, tissue imbalance, and much more honestly) and through just a handful of sessions, his work on my body took me from miserable to able to work out again. i've continued to see him with less frequency, and i continue to learn so much from him, including the importance of NOT suppressing my burdens for the sake of appearing tough. if either your body or mind are hurting, seek help from dr. colman. he is a marvelous human and terrific at what he does! read more

I have had the intention of writing this article for a very long time. Doctor Matthew Coleman is a genius! When I went to him, I was a mess with so many health issues that started in 2011. I have back/hip issues, but I also had an auto-immune condition called hemolytic anemia. He was always very kind and helped with my back and hip problems and helped with my auto-immune problem with supplementation. Most important note: Do your research on pricing around the city. HVW was about 25% more expensive than others I found. After paying hundreds of dollars for a 40-min first visit, I left feeling like I'd been put through a carnival magic show on speed. Dr. Colman greeted me and asked me to follow him down the hall at a very fast pace, apparently not noticing that I could barely walk from back pain. As soon as I sat down, however, he said he could tell what was wrong with me simply by looking at my face. After a lightning round of questions and advice thrown at me, he proceeded to poke me with his finger at different points up and down my body, asking me if it hurt. Then, he pulled my fingers a few times, occasionally claiming it was just as he thought.... And, we were done. Before he whisked off to see the next patient, he told me to visit him twice a week for a ten minute session at $100 each. [What?! The short of it is, Hayes Valley Wellness kept me mobile for the last trimester of my twin pregnancy. My doula recommended Dr. Colman when I was complaining of pelvic pain. My OB didn't have any recommendations (super helpful) and told me I would just have to tough it out. Thankfully Dr. Colman was able to not only figure out what was happening but was able to provide significant pain relief so I was mobile (and working!) until right up to my delivery. Since then I have continued to see Dr. Colman as my body adjusts to post-partum life. Dr. Colman really loves his patients and ensures the best preventative care for them! I've been seeing him for the past few months and can honestly say, he has taken great care and strides to ensure my well being. I'm a lot more engaged in my overall health under his guidance. If I could give Hayes Valley Wellness more stars I would. This place is amazing. I would highly recommend Dr. Coleman to anyone experiencing discomfort. I am 6 months pregnant and have had several problems, from fibroid pain, to back pain including sciatica and major heartburn. When I first went to see Dr. Coleman (highly recommended by a friend) I could barely walk and was in so much pain. I really appreciate the care I receive with Dr. Coleman. As mentioned by others he offers care beyond the basic chiropractic level. He is highly skilled and intellengent. His cool confidence makes you want to invest the time and the effort into working on those long nagging issues that have been bothering you. If you don't have confidence that someone is going to get to the bottom of them then why would you invest so much time and energy yourself on them. I have been going to Dr. Coleman for almost 4 years and I have to say that he is the only chiropractor ( ive been going since I was 16 years old) who has managed to keep me pain free, which is no easy feat since I've been a profesional dancer and performer for 20 years. Ok, so I was one of these people that was skeptical of Chiropractors, but one must not generalize. I have gone to Dr. Matt Colman on a few occasions. He has treated me for lower back problems and has recently treated me for a shoulder injury that I endured playing tennis. I have suffered with pain for about two months and after only a few treatments, I am ready to hit the courts again. I was really suprised to see how chiropractic has evolved as a field. Dr. Colman uses techniques that I have never heard of , but are doing wonders for healing a vast range of illnesses that don't necessarily have anything to do with the spine. If I recall correctly the main techniques that he uses are Bio Cranial and SOT. Dr. Colman does a great job of explaining what he is doing and why he is doing it. He is also extremely knowledgable about nutrition and is visibly in great condition himself. There is nothing worse than going to an unhealthy doctor. Beyond chiropractic, Dr. Colman is an extremely great human being with amazing energy that truly wants to improve the quality of life of his patients. I think that all of his patients would agree that just being in his presence makes you feel better. The last nugget that i have to mention is "Shadow", a black lab... the apple of her daddy's eye, who sits in the window peacefully while patients trail in and out. It's been 3 months since I've started seeing Dr. Coleman and I'm down 36 lbs. Was 242 and now I'm at 206. Got about 20 lbs to go but it's going well! I haven't been doing like a rough workout and eating plan either (but I'm also not sitting at my desk and eating pizza all day as well). Dr Matt Colman has helped me resolve issues I didn't think could be solved with skeletal adjustments and nutritional supplements. But wow. PMDD was connected to having a twisted dura which also had an effect on flexibility in my hips. Two adjustments and my hips are perfectly aligned and with some supplement assistance, and a few more subtle adjustments, I now just get plain old PMS. I have been going to Dr Colman for about 5 years now and I can't say enough about what a wonderful doctor he is. Not only is he incredibly good at what he does, but he truly cares about his patients' welfare & health. He's not just our doctor - he's also a dear friend now. When I first met Dr C I was suffering from severe shooting pains in my legs and hips. I had been going to PAMF & Stanford Pain Centre where they just kept increasing my dose of meds (mainly opiates). But the pain kept getting worse. I went to see Dr C as a last resort though I wasn't particularly sure about chiropractic. As I returned from my first session, with some adjustments and a hip-belt, my pain was down by about 50-60%. For me, that was like magic. He also found that all the meds had made me intolerant to many foods - by cutting them out of my diet, I was able to further reduce the pain. Over the years, Dr C has helped me with various health issues and has drastically changed the way my husband & I think about nutrition. Something that I'm grateful for everyday. We have recommended Dr C to most of our friends and family, all of whom love him. Matt has helped me with so many things over the past few years. I went in initially because I was waking up with shooting pain in my back. It turned out my right hip was tilted and my back had been compensating, for a long time. I was amazed that he was able to know that and relieve the pain with just a few sessions. I also saw him throughout my 2nd pregnancy & even brought in my newborn baby for a post birth adjustment. My older son also loves Dr. Matt. He is a great guy, and lives in alignment with his work. It's great just to talk to him about anything I have going on. Just a few months ago I was experiencing eczema on my hands. It was so bad, it would wake me in the night with painful itching sensations. I didn't think this was something for Matt since it wasn't structural, but I'm glad I mentioned it during a nutritional session with him. I should've written this years ago given how frequently I refer people to Dr. Matt Coleman and how amazing I think he is. I've been seeing Dr. Coleman on and off for almost 4 years. Pregnancy, birth, motherhood, and my general clumsiness have been rough on my body and thankfully as injuries happen Dr. Coleman is there to fix me up. I'll admit that I was skeptical about chiropractors, but both my OB and midwife suggested I see one to realign my pelvis after 5 months of bedrest. Dr. Coleman gently put my body back together after bedrest and then again after my birth. And he continues to do so. I just saw him today for an injury related to a mishap with the Dolores Park slides in the rain. One of the many things I love about Dr. Coleman is his honesty. I've had appointments like today where I go in with an injury and in pain, and I leave feeling great and I know I won't see him until I do something to injury myself again. Other times I've really screwed my body up and I need to see for several visits. Once your injury is sorted out he sends you on your way with a "Just give me a call if you need me." Dr. Colman is an amazing chiropractor and holistic doctor. He has helped me on more occasions than I can count, but I want to highlight two that stand out and made me a true believer in natural medicine: 1) When I first moved to SF, I had a ton of allergies and was not a fan of allergy medication. He gave me a combination of supplements that made all my symptoms disappear, and they did not return during the following allergy season. 2) I travel to India for work and often become sick from the food, water or both. He once again gave me some supplements that I was supposed to take before every meal to avoid any stomach issues, and it worked like a charm. The first time I went to India I was sick almost the entire time without the supplements, and this second time I had them and felt great! The melatonin also helped me get on the right schedule/time zone. On top of this, he is also a great chiropractor and I always leave the office feeling healthier, more balanced and even-keeled. Through his bio-cranial work, simple exercises he has given me to do at home, and custom advice on healthy living, he has been helping me to come closer to being my healthiest, most vibrant self. I only went for 3 visits, but I wasn't as impressed as other reviewers, and decided to go elsewhere. My back was seriously spasming out (I looked like the letter "S") but Dr Coleman's pace was painfully slow--first a $175 initial consult, then a freebie visit the next day at which the only intervention was his shoving a couple of wedges under my back while I lay face-up. Then another visit ($70 for 15 mins--a bit pricey compared with other chiros), with more wedging. My back didn't feel any better after all of this, so I went with someone who does the ol' "snap-crackle-pop", after which I felt more progress. Other issues for me were the frequency he wanted to see me (2-3 times a week at the aforementioned $70/visit, for several months), and the fact that a lot of his practice seems to be about getting you on some custom nutritional supplements (he's very vehement about regular multivitamins--even the fancy ones--being bad because they're synthetic). I'd have been willing to try him out for longer if I wasn't in so much pain and if the total cost of treatment didn't look so $$$. But others here seem to love him, so go figure. read more

A bit over three years ago I woke up in the middle of the night, my shoulder had dislocated as I slept. I managed to put myself back together but walked down to Dr. Coleman's office the next morning to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be. I had never been to him before, but I felt called to that office in particular and I have to say, I'm really glad about it. I'm a very active person and sometimes too "In-tune" with my body's many aches, pains and malfunctionings. Dr. Coleman has helped with with a number of things - the tricky shoulder, a leg that likes to shorten, digestive issues, poor self-esteem, low energy...the list goes on. I hadn't been in to see the good doctor for over a year due but have returned. Now, not only is Shadow still there with him, but he now has a wonderful, beautiful, vital office manager who just happens to be his wife. Ok...So in addition to your typical assessments and adjustments Dr. Colman does do a few weird things (supplements, bizarre blocks under your back, and some cranial / scalp pressing). That said, he's also the ONLY chiropractor who's ever really made me feel better in the long term. A lot better. Like, 99% better. And no matter who you go to see, that final 1% is probably up to you anyway. So in conclusion, this is the guy. On top of that, he also has a really good vibe. He really helped me understand why I have been experiencing pain in a way that no other chiropractor has been able to. I've never had to wait more than 3 minutes after arriving.
