Came in here late on a weeknight, as I was working late and needed some dinner. The restaurant is housed in an old bank and it is beautiful on the interior. I sat at the bar and was greeted warmly by the bartender. They had a large selection of beer and cocktails, and I settled on a local beer. For dinner, I ordered the chicken katsu salad, which the bartender informed me is less of a salad and more of a large piece of katsu stacked with veggies, which I was excited about. My food arrived quickly. The katsu was perfectly crisp and the peanut sauce and miso wonderfully tangy. Great meal and a great spot to sit and enjoy a drink. read more

Service is quick, but not immediate. Meaning, as soon as you have your server, he's all in.. but you have to wait for your turn. I hope that makes sense. If you're hungry and in a hurry, maybe you should have more patience before to pick this place. The ambiance was your typical sports, casual bar. We had the sampler pizza and you know that they served it right away since it was hot and fresh. The pasta was just right, the wings were flavorful and as expected with a variety of flavors to choose from. We didn't know what was good, so we reverted to asking for the server's recommendation. We had a reservation at 8pm. When we arrived they refused service because we had kids and "by law" kids had to be out by 9 pm. They did not say this to us when we made the reservation and they still had one hour to serve us but refused. We had to leave with 4 hungry kids and nowhere to go. When we arrived we were told that children were not allowed in after 9pm. We said it was fine as long as they got their food before 9 so they could leave. This place could easily be so much better. Beautiful interior with comfortable seating and located in a busy pedestrian only street next to major hotels. However it's the sort whose tv screens advertise 75% off wings on Wednesdays and $1 off beer on..,well you get it. The clientele is early twenty somethings out for a night of cheap beer and finger food. Nothing wrong with that. The beer menu is eclectic with peach this and raspberry that. I found a decent ipa I never heard of before. Food menu? Burgers, sandwiches, etc. many are served in red plastic baskets. Kale Caesar salad? Does anyone eat that? If it's not made with romaine then it's just greens in garlic dressing. My sandwich was ok but a bit pricey for what it was ( at least it was on a plate). Service is friendly but definitely tavern style. Anyway, ok for a beer or three and maybe some snacks. I really think a big opportunity for something special is being overlooked here. read more

My boyfriend and I were killing time downtown before a flight home and opted to eat here for lunch. We thought it looked cool. The inside is neat, but we decided to grab a seat outside because the weather was nice. We shared the BBQ Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese which was good, but nothing special in my opinion. The pork was a little too chewy for me, but good nonetheless. We like different dips with our fries and got two different aioli dips. They were good, but I wish we were informed they were $1 extra each. The extra is fine, I just wish we knew. But it also may be because where I'm from (Nevada), dip isn't normally extra? I don't know, haha. We shared the Red Wine Poached Pear for dessert and it was the absolute best thing I've had. It was such a light and not super sweet dessert. Perfect. Overall great place. Since my last visit in 2021, the service has improved. However, the quality of food has not. I had visited with two family members, one had gotten the steak and frites, the other the royale with cheese. When the food was brought out, I seen a "steak" that was no thicker than a hamburger patty and relatively small in size. They had asked for it medium and it was extremely well done. As for the burger, they had asked for no more pickle or tomato and it came with both. The fries were extremely salty and the presentation of the plate looked like we were at A&W. The restaurant ambiance is nice, low lighting and acceptable volume of music. The washrooms couldn't have been checked by their staff that day. Nearly every stall had no toilet paper, toilets filled and no soap in the dispensers. It was disgusting. read more

Visited twice in the week and waitress at the bar even remembered both our drinks and Happy Hour orders. Now that is hard to beat. Truly awful food. Have been here 15-20 times with work functions, with bad food every time. Tried speaking to the manager about it on my last visit. The complaint was that the food was very bland, gluey and unseasoned. First, she said that everyone else says it's awesome. My table of 10 (work colleagues) had large quantities of leftovers of the same dish. We couldn't finish. Then, she said we should just go somewhere else. Honestly, don't waste your money. The only good thing is the venue. Service and food are a double thumbs down. First of all, I am on a quest for happy hour deals around downtown Calgary, and this review is based on my Thursday evening experience - with half priced bottles of wine and a $10 chef's pizza. My friend and I arrived around 5:30pm on a Thursday evening, after I'd scoped out options for meal and drink deals. Most places only have their specials until 6 or 7pm, but this place has them from 3pm until late. Bonus points! The place was mostly full but we managed to find a free table near the back, and taking a table for 6 when there was only 2 of us didn't seem to be a problem. Seating yourself seems to be the go and the server came over within five minutes. She started off with telling us the specials which was great - the chef's pizza was a Buffalo Chicken ($10) and they have around 10 bottles of wine that are all half priced (ranging from $13 - $23 with the discount, and there's a list on the table). We shared a pizza and a mid-priced bottle of red ($18) and both were great. The pizza is made on a pita bread style and was really tasty. Splitting our bill ($15 each!) at the end was also no issue. Side note: they also have $5 glasses of house wine any day, anytime. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come here normally but I'm liking their Thursdays. read more

Remember when banks used to be made out of solid marble? This building is fantastic and definitely worth having a look at. Lucky for us, it's also a bar! Exploring history is better when you've got a beer in your hand. Fact. Apart from the incredible history, the rest of the Bank & Baron, is well, surprisingly normal... When it comes to food, drink and overall experience, Bank & Baron comes off to me as a pub, just like pretty much any other pub in Calgary. Not a bad thing by any means, just surprisingly safe. Being right along Stephen Ave, this would be a good spot for the downtown business crowd and a nice location to catch a happy hour after work. The place is huge. The ceiling is around 2.5 stories up with balcony seating overlook the main floor and the ginourmous centre bar. If you're planning on a night out with a bunch of friends, this would be a good place to go. There are plenty of huge tables complete with padded leather booths, and some of those semi-circle booths. Everyone gets a booth spot! Remember kids, if you're the person at the party who has to pee every three minutes, sit on the edges so you don't make everyone get up. That's called bar courtesty. It's got a really classy old school feel to it, except for all the TVs everywhere that I feel really ruin the look and feel. They tote themselves as an Old School Bank and New School Pub. Maybe the TVs are the new school part of it? The menu could be described as New School, featuring items like lobster mac & cheese, truffled organic potato chips, craft beer fondue, and plenty of old fashioned pub faves. The beer selection isn't so New School and playes it pretty safe, but I guess it's important to have Budweiser specials for the TV watchin' crowd. Holy crap, the basement! The basement is SO COOL. To get to the washrooms you need to pass by this incredible bank vault area. It makes for a really cool party room, but I think they should make some more money by turning the area into a puzzle escape room. This beautiful venue sat empty for quite a few years, it reopened as a restaurant with an interesting floor plan as they kept the layout of bank that was originally in this building. A gorgeous chandelier hangs among the marble and dark wood panelling that surrounds the central bar area as you enter into the restaurant. I think the décor makes up for the mediocre food (basic fanfare of sandwiches and salads, I had a pulled pork panini and a harvest salad). If you want to appreciate the ambiance as much as I do, your best option is coming for happy hour drinks. read more

The Bank & Baron is surprisingly grand. I think the best thing I love about this place is how grand it is in the interior as it indeed was an actual bank from several decades ago. I ordered a couple of beers, which were alright. Nothing to write home about. Had a Montreal Smoke meat that was far less Montreal Smoke Meats and far more a Corned Beef or a Pastrami. The company here was rather amusing on my table line. The Saskatchewan gal next to me apparently was having a birthday, and helped a calf be born a few nights back. Very dramatic gal, but very nice. Stopped in with a buddy on our way to a show at Jack Singer and was seated immediately in a massive leather U shaped booth. Good view of the TV's and the music was perfect for listening and talking. The Old Fashioned I had was pretty good, nice full tasting whiskey for sure. The wings were on for $3.50/pound, but were kinda small and could have had a more even spilt between flats and drumettes. We had a pound each of Dill Pickle & Sweet Chili wings, and we both thought the Dill Pickle could have used more flavour but, we will let that slide as our main dish was outstanding! Somehow we both ended up ordering the Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf. The meatloaf was done with a demi-glaze sauce that was especially good with the mashed potatoes it came with. Flavours were exploding everywhere with each bite and the portion of meatloaf was excellent as well. My buddy couldn't finish! The broccoli and carrots on the side were also steamed to perfection and tasted great too. Our server was perfect from start to finish as well. I'll say this, I think we found a great place to grab a drink and a bite when we are downtown for an event now! The waitress on the other hand was lacking. We asked for water 3 times (even when paying) and we still did not get it and she grabbed my friend's plate even if she hasn't finished eating, it would have been fine if she asked. She only did quality check at the beginning, and that was when we just got our food. After paying for the food, we were going to ask for water again but she just disappeared. We were PARCHEDT. First off they had a $5 special on caesars - delicious sausage, cheese and pepper topping - a bit watered down though and needed extra tabasco as it wasn't overly flavourful. For their lunch menu - it was a tremendous value. Course 1 was incredible, the flavours of the beet chips paired with the scallop and puree was a harmonious combination. The veal was good, but I felt this dish was very heavy and could have been more balanced with some greens on the side. The dessert was divine - I loved it. Service was good - even though it was quite slow on a Saturday afternoon our server forgot our requests for extra napkins and tabasco. I asked what appeared to be the manager when she stopped by and she brought them for us promptly. Will definitely be back to try out the rest of their menu! read more

I had a good time at The Bank and Baron Pub with my friends. We came here for wings Wednesdays. We got in right away (it was around 7pm) and enjoyed 25 cent wings. They had a few gluten free options, primarily in regards to sandwiches and pizzas, but they were a little out of my price range. I wish that the specials that they had were more accommodating for people with dietary concerns like me. However, the atmosphere was nice - a great place to watch sports (Go Flames Go!), and quiet enough to have good conversation. read more

I had a wash of memories wash over me when i walked in, thinking about when this space was "The Banke" night club MANY moons ago. It is such a beautiful space, and they have tried to keep some of the nostalgia alive. I went with a girlfriend after work for drinks and a bite to eat. I had a really fabulous Caesar, and my friend had a glass of the House Red, even after the very vague description from the waitress. I had the Kobe beef burger for dinner. It was really good. It was good enough meat that the bacon on it really didn't do it any justice, and I ended up picking most of it off. I had the beet salad on the side, which was a nice lighter option, since the burger itself was pretty heavy. They have lots of interesting sides, (roasted brussel sprouts, etc) a nice change from the usual fries or coleslaw. My friend went with the Bison sliders, which she said tasted great. Other reviewers have complained about waiting forever for our food, but we found the wait times average. We were there around 5:30. Overall, I think it's a great after work meeting place to unwind, and grab a bite! read more

Lucky for you, I'm going to focus on (mostly) the good because I'm in a good mood right now and my last review was a downer. I had a took some clients here for a festive lunch a few weeks ago. There were 7 of us total and we made a reso. Here's the Coles Notes version. Gorgeous building, nice space (a little loud at times). Service was attentive and speedy. Most everyone enjoyed their food. I shared the scallops (really good, but pricey) and the turducken pizza with my client because we couldn't decide and our server said the pizza was amazing. Now, I wouldn't say it was amazing, but it definitely has potential (there's that pesky "P" word again). The meat was a little dry but the gravy and cranberries were super comforting and made me want to curl up and take a nap after. It was a great business lunch, I will definitely come back and I hope to hell they can perfect the turducken pizza because if they do, it'll be tough to keep me away. Last night my boyfriend and I decided to have dinner after being at Theatre Calgary. Stephen Ave on a Sunday night is a bit of a ghost town, so the usual haunts (ha ha) weren't open. We decided on Bank and Baron which looks super cool, being an old bank and all. However upon arrival my ears were greeted by the familiar din of sportscasters from the outside speakers. The following is a transcript of the conversation we had outside: "Carly: oh god, it's a TV having sports bar! BF: ugh, let's not go in then. Carly: I mean, it IS a pub... BF: it looks cool.., Carly: is it gonna be loud? BF: it doesn't look busy. Carly: Let's try to find somewhere else and if we can't find anything we can come back BF: Ok. Wait it looks dead. And, we should try it. And...it's cold. Carly: Yeah it's effing cold" So we went in. Because it was cold. And it's an OLD BANK??!! So cool! As soon as we walk in, we are greeted by TVs upon TVs all way too loud for the less than 15 people (staff included) that were in the place. Let me just say that I KNOW this is a pub, but I couldn't help but dream of the amazing things the place could be. The food was decent, I had a veggie pizza and kale salad, he had chilli chicken. Prices were a bit high but the selection is great and they have GF options! The deals are great, that night it was $4 drinks (not wine) all day. And apparently they have brunch, and cheap wine, and crazy gourmet desserts, and a great wine list and a bunch of other moderately fancy things which totally give with the big retro bank, soft lighting and luxurious leather booths. All of which is ruined by the Shanks-esque TV saturation. I get that it likely caters to a certain clientele and again, is a "pub" but there were so many loud, blinding TVs the beauty of the building itself was totally lost. I think that if there was a way to quarantine the sports, or section it off, it would have the ability to be a really nice place to have a meal. The building is really cool, an old bank building with lots of room inside, there's seating on two levels so it's usually pretty easy to get a table and there's lots of rooms for a group which is awesome. The menu has pretty standard pub type food on it and there's a decent drink selection. They have the TV's setup to show pictures patrons have taken and there's usually quite a few photos rotating through so people seem to like this feature. I've been here a few times for lunch, team drinks and most recently for a birthday party celebration. The food is always okay, nothing to complain about but nothing spectacular, I've mostly just tried the appetizers and they were all standard. The service can be a bit slow though so if you come in for lunch and are on a time limit it can end up being a bit rushed, if you're not in a rush then no worries. read more

Met up with a few friends at the Bank and Baron on a Tuesday night for dinner and drinks. Despite it being located on 8th Ave and it being really nice out, the bank and baron was pretty dead for a Tuesday night (this was surprising to me). The venue itself apparently used to be an old bank, which gives it a really nice old, rustic and solid feel to it. The bathrooms are located downstairs, where you can still see the old bank vault. Our server was really pleasant and took the time to converse and joke around with us, making the experience more enjoyable. We all ordered a couple of drinks and started off with the cheese fondue. The cheese fondue came with garlic pitas and there was a good ratio of pita to cheese. Nothing is worse than ordering dips and such and not having enough bread or whatever to eat the delicious stuff with. I had the fish tacos as my main course and added beer battered fries to my meal. I personally really liked the tacos, as the fish wasn't battered and it was tender. I really enjoyed my experience at the Bank and Baron and would definitely go back. We had to ask for cutlery so we could eat. Food and beer came out quickly. The food sounded interesting on the menu, but the execution was lacking. Our donair nachos were soggy with cheese and excessive toppings (more chips please!) and our pizza's crust was also soggy.
