This is by far my favorite workout ever and after four years of KC living, I keep coming back for more! Bar Method is a high intensity, low impact class that makes you sweat and shake during class and makes you so sore the next day. The whole concept revolves around contracting your muscle to the point of exhaustion (hello shakes!) and then stretching and lengthening your warm muscles immediately after. Bar method was designed and vetted by physical therapists - and the studio floor is the same as a gymnast floor - so it is awesome for folks with joint issues of any age! The structure of the class is always the same - warm up includes an upper body workout with weights, followed by push ups and tricep dips. Do not let the light weights fool you- the exercises and reps make 2 and 3 lb weights feel like 20's! Next comes the meat and potatoes of Bar - LEGS AND BOOTY! Calf raises, 3 grueling sets of Thigh and a next-day-waddle-worthy booty workout. Stretches at the bar and in the floor are incorporated throughout. Finally, Abs and a little back dancing (channel your inner Call On Me music video)... Oh the instructors are ALL amazing, encouraging and each have their own way of empowering you to push through your sets even though you want to stop. The classes are personalized since the instructors know your name and call out corrections and encouragements throughout the class. They are also hands on to ensure you are in the best form possible! Music sets are also awesome and are constantly changing for fun varieties! Overall, in case you can't tell, I am a fan of Bar Method and encourage everyone to at least try it out once! It might look like you are barely moving but I promise it is a HARD workout! The method strengthens your posture, creates longer leaner muscles and improves flexibility! No dance experience required by the way - I am not a graceful or flexible person but I love how strong I feel when I leave class (and how sore my body feels too)! Going into this studio for the first time, I had no idea what to expect. I don't keep up with the seemingly endless workout styles out there, and having never been graceful, like ballet dancers, this wouldn't have even made it on my list. Over the years, I've tried pilates, Insanity, yoga, and random YouTube dance videos; and only yoga seems to stick, although the results I get with yoga are more mental than anything. With Bar Method, I started seeing quick results. Basically you are doing small movements that fine-tune specific muscles, followed by intense stretches to give you an overall leaner look. The exercises are safe for everyone. What have I got to lose? Plus they ran a birthday special the day I came, so I decided to commit to 1 month. Initially, it was challenging to follow the structured routine - I was doing the plank wrong, or I slouched too much, or a slew of other reasons. Fear not, the instructors take the time to learn your name and will instruct or come around to adjust you. In a 60-minute class, you get to target your arms, shoulders, thighs, legs, glutes, back, abs...so basically you will be sore the next day. No doubt about it! My jello-y triceps scream at me every time. Truth be told, halfway through, I want to give up and crawl into a ball. But I keep pushing, because everyone else is working hard. The instructors are well-rehearsed in the routines. They are exceptionally toned and charismatic. After taking 8 classes, I can honestly see some definition in my arms and legs. Here we get to the catch, because up until now, life's peachy! For someone like myself who just switched careers, starting out fresh, this is not something I have the budget to continue after my month is up. LOVE this place!! I'm a newbie to the Bar Method, but as an avid runner I can say it's a good and viable option for cross-training. I've been going for a week, and to the first classes of the day at 6am. It's wonderful (for so many reasons) to wake up and workout first thing, the West Plaza location makes it even better. My favorite part is watching the sunrise throughout the class!!! The studio has a dance bar around the perimeter and two walls of mirrors. The locker to the back of the building has free-use lockers, showers and sinks, cute mirrors, and little things you might need to get ready!! How convenient :) I've had about four instructors, and I've heard Hoddy (the owner) is great, but so far Lizzy is my favorite!! They have a very convenient online booking service and GREAT customer service with their people!! Cannot rave enough about the actual people who work there. Side note, they also sell retail...but I don't know much about that. I've heard and learned that it's best to book classes two weeks in advance; they will fill up quickly!! Especially the 5:45pm class. There are wait lists, but I've never chanced that...don't know the likelihood of actually getting in if you're wait listed. But awesome studio and fun class!! read more

Y'all. The Bar Method is so NICE. Like, it has a luxe, high-end barre boutique feel to it. Everything from the amenities in the bathrooms to the clean showers to the lockers to the workout room has the client's comfort in mind. The workout room is carpeted which gives me the false reassurance that the workout will be easy. Don't believe the cushy carpet! The workouts are hard as heck. My muscles were shaking and quivering the entire time, which means I was actually working my muscles. I took the Mixed Levels class. The instructor, Rachel, has a bit of a bootcamp instructor vibe in that I feel like she doesn't put up with any malarkey. With a firm, steady voice she guided us through our workout. She gave corrections to almost everyone in the class and moved our bodies into position if we were off. We used a lot of props which were a little confusing because there were so many different uses for them that I wasn't familiar with. The cool part was just when I started thinking we made a mess with our props spread throughout the room, another employee came in and started picking up in the middle of class. It's the little things that make me feel comfortable in class. The Bar Method thinks of everything. Pro tip: You're going to want to wear your cutest yoga/barre outfit because everyone there looks so stinking cute and coordinated in their Lululemon. Bottom line: The Bar Method's mission is focused on strength, grace and poise and you can see and feel this down to every detail of this barre boutique. I think I'm addicted. Lizzy offered more assists than any teacher in any class I've ever been to. Being new to barre, it helped me feel confident that I was using correct posture and using the props to benefit me. The class was fast paced and challenging, but I feel relaxed and rewarded afterward. Additionally, the students that attend Bar Method are the most welcoming and encouraging crowd I've ever experienced. I feel like everyone wanted me to succeed and feel included. I like to workout on accident (hiking, trail biking, the occasional squat to pick up a fat baby), and the idea of using an elliptical at a gym in front of a gray wall and muted CNN is loathsome to me. So why am I addicted to Bar Method? What about it is so freaking great? Because it gives you that flat stomach, lifted seat (ahem, your BOOTY), curved thighs and lean calves you crave. They advertise that but you gotta feel like it's a bit of a gimmick. Nope. Fastest results I've ever seen, and I've sweated and sweared my way through Project Poolside at GymKC like the best of them. Every class offers challenge options so if you start to plateau or want to show off, you can push yourself more. I started doing bar while I was pregnant with my second kiddo. Quickly I became too uncomfortable to be on my back for curl work. No problem. They offer a monthly prenatal class at the Leawood location that goes over all the suggested modifications. I also told the instructor each time before class started that I was both preggers and had sciatica and they suggested things to change based on the workout routine for that class. Also offered tips in the moment to improve posture and reduce risk of injury. My OB looked deeply skeptical when I told her that bar/yoga/Pilates were supposed to reduce labor and post-recovery time, but my labor was much shorter with this baby and my uterus shrank much faster in the week after the delivery. Sorry if that's TMI, men, but then again why are you reading this review anyway? Others have mentioned the changing area, lockers, random toiletries and the showers that make it easy to head there before or after work, but other parents will be happy to hear that they offer childcare during the 9:30 am class. You have to sign up beforehand, but they offer childcare discounts from time to time if you start getting their newsletter. I feel so strong every time I come out of class. Even with a recurring lower back injury (did I mention fat babies?) this is one of the most gentle and strengthening workouts I could do to improve core and butt to prevent future re-injury. I'm a regular to Bar in West Hollywood, and once I realized I'd be in KC for a long weekend for a conference, I immediately searched for a studio in the area. I can say only good things about this West Plaza location! As soon as I walked in I got a tour of the facility; the studio is large, clean and updated. My teacher was in training, but she was still great. I love that I can travel half way across the country and still feel right at home getting my workout in. And I know I got a workout; I could feel the "pretzel" seat work for a day or two afterwards...I guess I earned all that BBQ! ;) read more

I really really like bar method! It's definitely comparable to pure barre, as they preach the same methods. (Tuck, tone). You use light weights and high reps with small pulse movements to get the "burn" feeling in your muscles. After just two classes, I can see the toning in my arms. All of the equipment is provided to you at the facility. Shoes are not allowed in the workout room. Wear gripping socks!! That is a must unless you want to skip around. I don't believe they will allow bare feet. This class is overall great, Lizzie was the instructor and she is fantastic. She will correct your form if you are having any difficulties. The only unfortunate thing is the price tag that come with it. Then again, you pay for quality. read more

Front desk is always very nice and helpful as well as the instructors at both locations. Can be intimidating at first but there is often a new person thats in the same boat. They do call your name out and do hands on adjustments so if you dont like to be corrected that may be different for you. I got hooked quickly! read more

When I first started attending classes, I admit I found it all a little intimidating. Somehow the room is always full of beautiful women in coordinated lululemon outfits with giant rocks on their ring fingers. I was like, "hey guys, I'm here on a Groupon so you have to put up with me for 60 days!" But in actuality everyone I encountered was unbelievably kind and helpful. Instructors were more than happy to explain how to modify poses for my tight hips and other class attendees passed out equipment and helped put things away. You reserve and cancel classes online, and if you don't come without canceling you'll get charged. I found it to be more help than hassle since it ensured that class size didn't get out of control and no one showed up only to be turned away. I noticed I gained a lot of toning in my arms and shaping in the tush during my two-month stint. I decided to take a break after my Groupon ended because of upcoming full and half marathons, but now that I'm done with fall races I plan to go back and pay full price. read more

Nothing tones like Bar Method!!! The first time I attended a class, my entire body was sore the next day. The more you attend, the more you progress--and there's always room to grow. The instructors are awesome and I really appreciate the personalized instruction and hands-on adjustments. Don't let L.W.'s comment steer you away. I can't attend classes during the work day and that's never been a problem for me in over a year's time. I try to schedule a week or two out, but sometimes it's not possible or I simply forget. They maintain full classes by pulling from a waitlist when people cancel (and people do cancel). I often sign up on the waitlist and, nine times out of ten, I get into the class. read more
