Run by Lorenzo, who emigrated from the South of Italy around 40 years ago, Lygon Hairdressers does a killer haircut for $20. Not only do you get a great no nonsense cut, but you also get a close shave of your neck and the back and sides of your hair with a razor blade. Lorenzo is a pretty easy-going bloke who likes a good yarn spun. If you are in the mood for a good chat then he's quite talkative. Similarly, if you are not in the mood for small talk then he's happy to keep quiet too. Plenty of regulars here of all ages is testament to the quality of the cut and the professionalism shown. There are no appointments taken so it's done by walk-ins. It's also only a ten-minute walk from Melbourne uni and if you are a student then you can get a cut for $18.

In fact, I got my hair cut at a beauty school/training place for a few years, so I know what a bad cut looks like! Even after all this time, you can still get a clean, simple no fuss crew cut for $15, without having to spend a king's ransom on a cut and style faff about. I have thick hair, so when it grows, it looks more like a Boofro than anything else (That's a Boof Afro.) Yep, it gets all boofy and I look goofy and silly, so the only way is to shave it off. Each barber I've had has always been great; David only hires the best, and only hires reliable people with experience. There's not much of the playing first and second chair fiddle here, mostly it is a shared enterprise, done evenly. There are some stand out favorite barbers though that do get popular. For me, It doesn't matter so much. I've only ever really gotten a crew cut form here, so that's all I can speak for but I've never been disappointed. Great results.

I don't like being on display when I get a haircut. And especially with foils. It was very cosy and discreet. But not uber cool. The clientele were quite diverse: trendy women, middle aged businessmen, normal mother with child and then a woman who looked in late 70s having a great chat with her hair dresser who was a heavily tattooed young man showing her photos on his phone which were either of his children or pets. They are also pretty good when it comes to cutting my toddlers' hair and they provide a Wiggles cape/apron (what is that thing actually called???) for them to wear to stop hair getting everywhere - rather than the generic black one provided for adults. They also have a special little seat which sits on the main chair so that toddlers can see the mirror and be at hair cutting height. Not much else to say other than it is a good, ordinary hairdresser.
