Hidden gem on Austin street. My kids barber relocated so I was looking for the best place I can find and boy did I do a great job - The Barber Shop FH is #1. Today was my second visit. First time I purchased the facial- haircut and shave package $60 and it took an hour I believe. My son loved it and I enjoyed watching the owner JOEY to work his magic. Second time I brought my little one for his haircut- kid haircut $20 and he wanted a design which again came out looking great. Glad I found this place on Yelp... Benny did such a great job with my hair in giving me exactly what I wanted (#1 fade with a trim on top). He's Mr. Precision with an eye for detail in making sure my cut was perfect. At the end, he suggested a side part for next time that I'm definitely gonna grow out my hair and do. Plus, Benny's a friendly guy to have a convo with (forgot to tell him that I highly recommended "Warrior" on HBO Max to watch). Came in looking like Cousin Itt. Left feeling like the sh*t. Place smelled fantastic. The vibe was super hospitable and chill. They recommend appointments. I got lucky and got my cut done quickly. Alex made me smile when I looked at myself. I'm not sure there's a better way to say he gave me a great cut. Of note: It's on the "2nd floor"... in like a European way where the street is 0, you pass a 1st floor, and you find them on the 2nd floor above that. A lot has changed since I first started coming here. Josh no longer works here as many loyal customers has recently found out, but Mark is great and he is still running this shop. He has added 3 new barbers so wait times has sped up significantly. The layout has also changed to utilize the space a lot more efficiently. The counter is now in the front and there are 2 chairs on each side. Prices increased to 14 dollars a haircut now. Not a big increase, but an increase nonetheless. Still a great deal in my opinon. Note another change to the shop is the business days. They are closed Saturdays now and note they are cash only. Take the elevator to the 2nd floor and it's on your right. It can get pretty busy now due to all the positive Yelp reviews, so expect around a 15 to 45 minute wait. read more

There are signages but since there are many shared businesses I was slightly confused. Upon entrance, you must be buzzed in, There were 3 chairs with a very small space which did seem actually comforting. They had liquor bottles and fugazi hype covers to trend the modern gens. Appointments - I called in advance and they told me they only take walk ins...but I did see a couple of people come in with an "appointment" and they casually cut the people who were waiting. Wait time - came in Sunday evening and waited about 30min to an hour to be seated. Barber - I specifically asked for Mark bc I was watching him cut and I thought his cuts were more of my style. I told him what I wanted in general and let him do his thing. Conversation - made small conversation but mostly focused on cutting my hair and seemed to put a lot of effort and patience into the detail. Cut - clipped around generally first, then took the scissors to trim and blend, then razored the tips. During the cut, mark continued to ask me what I wanted in length, sideburns, bangs, top, etc. After he finished a couple of times, he perfected the cut all around to make sure there were no stray hairs and the entire cut was clean, neat, blended well. He cut my hair fast and precise. He knows what he is doing. Took around 30min for the cut. My hair was between short to medium length down to a combover fade. Price - $14 for a haircut. Cash only. $12 for seniors. Conclusion - Mark spent a lot of time and went out of his way to make sure I was satisfied at the end, even though he had a line and it was around closing time. It did not feel rushed. He even told me what was wrong with the haircut I had prior and how he was going to fix it. He told me about how some parts of my haircut would look more even as it grows out in the future. Most other barbers have cut my hair too short, and he made sure he knew in the beginning the length he was going to stop at. He stopped the entire cut at a certain length, then looked around all angles, then cut it shorter and blended it in certain spots. He read my mind; I didn't have to tell him what to fix or what I thought would look better as he cut it. I've been to expensive places in the city and places in Williamsburg but they've always left some strands here and there or cut it too short or choppy. The wait was longer than other places I've ever been to but I'm extremely picky with my hair and this cut was perfect. Mark took much more care of my haircut in a shorter amount of time. This is a legit barber shop (no women cuts here) and it seems like Mark (the owner) is very popular. My husband just gets his hair cut by whoever is available (usually the young guy) and hasn't been disappointed yet. They will do whatever you ask them to do, but if they suggest a different blade or length, listen to them! They know what they are doing. The barbers are rather brusque and if you are looking to be coddled, just turn around now. This is my go to spot for a cut. AS of 07/30/2017 they give great cuts for $14. That's a fantastic deal for the quality and effort they put into each person's desired haircut. They're all good at what they do. Whether it's Eddie, Joe or Mark you really can't go wrong. My brother and a bunch of my cousins go here too. To be honest, I would pay more because I feel they deserve it. If I had to give any criticism it would be that sometimes the wait can be really long because of their popularity, but that's okay with me. I stop going when I moved out of forest hills and decided to grow out my hair but after several bad hair cuts and spending $$$ at the salon I recently returned. His price plus the cost of taking the LIRR is 90% less than me going to a Fully service Hair Salon. For ladies looking for a men's cut no wash no fancy products, no blow drying and flat ironing just a great hair cut. I came at first not knowing anything except for the fact that this place has some good reviews. I did get lost at first since i didn't know that its located on the 2nd floor, so make sure you take the elevator upstairs. Once I step in, the room is literally like a lounge with a huge TV, nice comfy seats and cool red walls. If there is a long wait, you have to make sure you sign your name in. The wait can get a little long (expect an 1-2hr) depending on the time that you go in. But its because all of these barbers take their time with the cuts and never rush. You can see this in how clean your gonna look. Not only that, they make it feel very homey, with all the jokes, laughs and teasing. It literally feels like your just hanging out with your boys. I got cut by Vincent and Eddie, both were very good and accommodating. I do have to admit that Vincent does take him time more compared to Eddie but both are excellent regardless. The parking situation can get a little annoying since its in the middle of the main street. But if you cant find parking nearby, I usually would go toward the residential areas and walk. If your gonna do metered parking, the meter ends at 10pm and its 1.50 for an 1hr, so keep that in mind. Also the price is pretty good, 16$! It very reasonable considering the quality of work. read more

I found "The Barber Shop" via Yelp after having moved to Forest Hills, Queens in Oct. 2015. There are some places that had caught my eye on the major thoroughfare of Queens Blvd. that are easily visible but the solid-5 rating of this barbershop caught my eye, so I decided to go here first. When going here the first time, you really have to keep your eye peeled for it. It's on the second floor of a strip mall on Austin St, which is known for its bars, restaurants, clothing shops, etc. Said strip mall has tons of such shops visible; this strip mall has a few places hidden in the back that you can't see from the street, and this barbershop is one of them. There's a nondescript black text on white background sign saying "Barber Shop" on the wall of an elevator and that's it. Once inside, I found it to be a hole-in-the-wall, and considering some of the best restaurants I've found in this city are such places, and have dirt cheap prices, fine by me! If you want calm ambient music or loud thumping music and/or you want your hair cut by some dandy cosplaying as a 1900s-era barber that charges $50 for a "Master's Level Barber" to cut your hair, keep looking. This barbershop itself is extremely barebones; the sign is written on poster board, for crying out loud. The walls are a deep red with various framed photos hanging throughout; on wall immediately when you walk in, there are plush faux-leather (I think) leather benches that are perfectly comfortable while you wait for your haircut. Opposite this wall, past the barbers' chairs, there is a wall with a little nook in it that has a TV placed in it. Every time I've been here it's been on something on Netflix; for a while, it was nothing but Family Guy. Once it was a gangster movie with Robert De Niro I had never even heard of before; I found out it was "A Bronx Tale" and downloaded it at home. If you continue down, there's a hallway where they store stuff, a small unisex bathroom, and the entrance if you come up via the stairs, which requires being buzzed in. Anyway, most people come to a barbershop to get their haircut, not enjoy the ambience, so on to that. It can get quite packed right after work, where I've waited up to 30 minutes. The barbers here are Jewish and subsequently are closed on Saturdays, and I've had 30 minute waits even on Sundays. Typically I wait less then 15 minutes, sometimes 5, but shockingly enough, people here know the barbers here do quality work at great prices! If you want to wait for Mark, the owner and head barber, be prepared to wait even longer. The first time I came here, I did, because I'm horrible at explaining my hairstyle to a barber the first time, which I really should fix. I'm glad I spent the time waiting for Mark the first time because I was amazed at how great my haircut looked after I awkwardly explained how I wear it, how short I want the sides, etc. My haircut is quite simple and takes about 15 minutes to complete; since finding this place, I walk in, tell them "The usual", Mark reminds them of what that is if need be, and I'm out looking like a million bucks typically in less then 20 minutes from elevator button press to back on the street. A standard men's haircut does indeed offer a shave of the back of the neck, which costs a scant $14. This barbershop is cash only, so be sure you hit up the ATM first if need be. This place offers other services I've never gotten before, like a full shave with a straight razor, but I've never gotten them, but if they're done with the care and quality of the haircuts I receive, they will be great. They also offer a punch card where, after ten (10) visits, you get a free haircut. So in summation, I cannot recommend this place enough. Again, if you want to be offered bottled water before you get a $50 haircut, keep looking. If you want a great no-frills barbershop with prices to match, this place in Forest Hills fits the bill. read more

The wait time has really gotten out of hand. I started coming here several months ago. At first it was consistently pretty good, probably worth 4 stars. They always did a decent (not amazing but above average) job, and they work fast - I would be in and out in about 15-20 minutes. It was always busy but they had 3-4 guys working at a time, so you never had to wait long. It's a nice place for a barber shop, and the location is convenient. Then one time I went and a new guy cut my hair. I kept telling him it was too long, but he didn't listen, and after about a week I had to go back and get it cut again. When I came back, that guy was gone and I was told he had been let go. The next 3 times I went here, the wait was so long that I just left. It seems like every time I stop by here lately, there are 1 or 2 employees working and a ton of customers waiting around. I don't have time to sit around and watch a movie for an hour or two in a barber shop. If your wait time is consistently longer than 30 minutes, please hire more staff. It's absolutely insane to have empty barber chairs with no workers, and a line of customers to the door. The last time I tried was pretty much the final straw - I went in, there was ONE person working (the owner, I believe) and a few customers sitting on the couch waiting. I figured okay, it will be about a 30-45 minute wait, not ideal but I can tolerate it. As soon as the guy who was getting his hair cut paid, another customer walked in, greeted the owner, and then sat directly in a barber chair - apparently skipping the customers waiting on the couch. The owner made a comment about how this guy had been in earlier, and "put his name on a list to reserve his spot when he came back." Dude are you kidding me? Are we in 3rd grade, saving spots for each other in line? Make him wait on the couch and waste his time like the rest of us. I walked out after this stunt. I'm done wasting my time walking over here. Look, you may have a great service but it's irrelevant if you can't actually deliver it to your customers. I doubt I am the only person who doesn't have the time or inclination to wait around 1 hour+ every time I need to get my hair cut - fix this before you lose more customers. read more

A regular cut is 18 bucks and it's well worth it. The guy asked me questions about how I style my hair and what products I use. So far so good. In my never relentless search for a good barber around my way, I found this place by accident on Yelp. I was JUST about to enter Sergey's but I saw him busy with someone so I said to myself : "SELF, you should see if there are any other optons around...AGAIN" As lady luck would have it, The Barber Shop simply put reminded me of when I used to get my trims by this dude at Ozone Park. The SPACE or rather getting to this barber shop was a little confusing at first. The directions couldn't be more clear, ENTER ON 2nd FLOOR. Done. But when you go up to the second floor using the staircase that is directly next to Bubble Crepe you have to push this buzzer marked "Barber Shop". Security is tight at Forest Hills. I pushed the buzzer repeatedly no answer. So I called the shop and they informed me to use the elevator instead. Once you get up to the 2nd floor which literally is a 10 second trip from the 1st floor via elevator you get off and go through the glass door and it's to your right. They weren't busy today which made it even the more ideal for me. Josh, who was my barber today and probably for next couple of trims at least was friendly off the bat. I showed him a picture of what I wanted and he got close to it which was all I really could ask for. The things I have to do for new headshots I tell ya... Josh keep the talk light which made the session a breeze. My former barber didn't talk much. Well he did but he spoke in Spanish and I spoke in Chinese. It just didn't work. I do have to note that Josh with his quick technique translated into a few drops of the comb/scissors. No biggie. A quick brush off and away we trim. They had an episode of Family Guy playing at the time which added to the light hearted aura of this barber shop. The PRICE is standard at $12 for men's cut and with tips it's either $14 or $15 if you really like the doo. They do have a LOYALTY CARD which is 10 visits/trims and you get one free. WIN.
