I've been going to Steve's Barbershop consistently every month for the past 4 years, and I honestly wouldn't go anywhere else. Every single haircut has turned out incredible -- clean, consistent, and exactly what I ask for every time. The quality has never dropped once. Steve, the owner, runs an amazing shop and creates a welcoming, old-school barbershop vibe that you don't find much anymore. The barbers here truly care about their work and take their time, which makes a huge difference. Mike has been my go-to barber and he never disappoints, but Ronnie is also excellent -- you really can't go wrong with anyone in the shop. The price has gone up to $25 + tip, but it is still 100% worth it for the level of skill, service, and consistency you get. You leave knowing your haircut is going to look great for weeks. Ended up having to go get a second cut elsewhere after leaving this place and I'm absolutely convinced they did it on purpose. Then they insisted I had to pay the woman's cut price despite repeatedly saying that I am looking for a men's cut, and I am not a woman- they then also charged me for a blowout that I specifically asked them not to do. I have been a regular at this place for many years probably since they opened I would say, the owner Steve always opens and closes and he is always there. This is the only place I know where you can get a really good Russian hot towel shave and buy a 40$ bottle of shampoo before you leave lol. This place can get crowded at times on certain days of the week and even busier during certain holidays so I recommend calling ahead make an appointment or go when the shop opens up in the morning. Over the years I have had haircuts with Eddie, Remi, Sammy, & Steve and trust me they don't disappoint you'll always come out fresh and looking brand new they take really good care of you and take their time I usually get a taper or skin fade which always comes out awesome! I do recommend getting a hot towel shave to complement your haircut believe me it's the best not many shops does and can't do it like this place can. So I got a haircut from Zohan, I mean...Steve. Actually a shape-up...here's how it went down. I was in the neighborhood, my last day in NY, about to hit up my storage. Gathering up my last moment stuff, putting other stuff away for another month or so. And I wanted to look fresh for my last day with my lady and my peoples. So I remembered, the last time I was in the area I had asked a pizzeria guy where I could get a decent cut, he told me make a left on 96th bla bla bla... ON TO THE EXPERIENCE... I walk in. Three barbers on the right side. Back chair: Puerto Rican looking dude, giving an urban cut. Middle chair: Russian [or Former Soviet Territory, judging by his last name] dude giving a shapeup and shave. Front chair: THE BIG HOMIE ZOHAN...I mean Steve. On the left side there were three chairs, but one hairdresser. I don't know women's hair too well, but she had two girls waiting, and when one left she gave her a hug so...I'm guessing she was nice with it. The back barber was doing his thing, I could see him giving the client a good fade. The middle barber has a weird old school ethic to his style, despite looking no more than 25. He solidified my suspicions with a hot towel + lotion treatment before his client's shave...and then get this...DUDE PULLS OUT A VIBRATOR, no seriously, let me explain. I've never, ever, ever seen this. It plugged into the wall, and looks like a three muskeeters bar with a strap that goes over his hand. So he turns it on, and his hand shakes wildly, but then he kinda gave the guy a massage on the neck / chest region. IT WAS AWESOME. A little homo-erotic, but awesome. Now we have Steve. Steve has the best haircut in the place. A European ever-so-slighty-balding bouffant with probably the best tape up I've seen on a Euro cat in a minute. So I'm thinking...okay, the shop's named after him...he's got a bangin cut...let's hope I get him. A black kid in front of me gets called by Steve...said kid PASSES up and says 'let him go first' [referring to me]. FIRST BAD VIBE. So Steve asks for what I need, I say just a line up. Then starts with EPIC small talk. Kinda like a job interview for a halal cart would sound. I can barely understand him. He's doing all these flarish / gaudy moves. Flipping the brush and clippers etc. His confidence is great, his skills not so much. I don't need a friend, I don't need a clown. This is not Benihana. I once traveled from High Street on the A to the last stop in Far Rockaway on the A for a few months to loyally go to a barber. He was that good. And I usually had to wait two hours once I was there too. Steve / Zohan, your flashiness did not impress me. That little smack on the stomach you gave me after you pulled off the curtain, had you caught me on a bad day, I would've eviscerated you with your own scissors. Don't badmouth my current NY barber [Juan Francisco from Rubio's] who on a Tuesday night, stayed 30 minutes after everyone else making sure I got a perfect fade / shape up / shave, and who i tipped accordingly. I see why you're hurting for business with that nonsense you're doing. Your other barbers got precision and work-a-day style, this isn't a car dealership. So yeah...next time I'm in the hood...I'ma go to Dona Maria's for a plate, hit my storage and then go wait for the middle or back chairs...f- outta here with that nonsense. read more

Love getting my hair cut here, especially as a queer person. I have so many bad experiences with barbers turning me away or ignoring me because they "don't cut women's hair." And that's even when I show up with short hair to begin with. That was one of the hardest things to experience after coming out, since it made me want to go cut my hair less. I always looked like a mess.... until my brother recommended Steve's. Steve and the other guys always made me feel so welcome; I love getting my hair cut now. I always look tidy even if I take a longer break between cuts, which is a sign of a good barber. They are funny, attentive, and generally good dudes. Steve only has the best guys, and everyone always looks great when they walk out... especially me! I brought in my 2 yr old for a much needed haircut today; I didn't think it would be too eventful since he was not cranky. However the minute I put him down in the chair, he had a full blown meltdown. Steve was so nice though, he had me hold my son in my lap and while my son was moving and screaming his head off, steve was cutting his hair. It came out beautifully and everyone else in the place didn't make a big deal over my sons meltdown. The sweet lady brought over some lollipops and when it was over, my son calmed down and was back to his normal self. Bring your kids and your wives cause they have a hair salon for women too.
