Stephanie created a really special workout, and her beginner's option is tough! This is not to be confused with the bar method or mat pilates. The beginner class is also difficult in a way that will signal to your body that it is capable of more. Her sense of humor and dramatic playlist make the hour-long class enjoyable. Every person in the room is usually grunting and oiy'ing with the slight adjustments that she makes to help maximize our workout. I have taken class the day after Thanksgiving and also on random weekends. The small class size makes each session feel like a personal training opportunity. The Barboza Method makes me re-think my posture and movements in everyday life, especially as I am mostly sitting at a desk during work hours. Oh, the violations to our bodies when we are constantly on devices and crouched forward! (Insert crying emoji here.) I am excited to re-train mine so that I can age better over time. Another observation is that the class is challenging even for the seasoned fitness fanatic so don't think you'll breeze on by, even if you do megaformer/solidcore or crossfit/F45 frequently. Some of the clients have legit hard bodies next to my softer and noodle-ly self, yet they're sweating in solidarity and you can tell it's not easy for anyone. The studio culture is non-judgemental so I feel like a rockstar afterwards (in a OMG-I-didn't-die way) even though I still look like a donut. Try it at least once so that you can open your eyes to a unique treatment for your muscles and alignment. It's both torturous and nourishing, and different from anything you can find at other studios or at standard gyms. You can find Stephanie on ClassPass or pay for individual classes or packs. The credits or $ are worth it. Some logistics: Parking is via meter or side-streets. Watch the signs. One of my classmates said there is also free valet during some evenings but I haven't tried this option. The studio has storage cubbies but they're not locked, so I recommend leaving your valuables in the car. Seriously, you won't need your phone anyway. Barboza Method is right next to the restaurant Horses, and you have to walk down a short alley into the adjacent backyard to access the door. It's not creepy. If you are early to class, take your time walking toward the studio. There is something about the discovery, a-la Great Expectations, and that soundtrack song by Mono rings in my head. I attended this Sound Bath Pranic Healing by Natalie Skyy and I can elaborate enough about it. After years of self-Discovery this Sound Bath & Pranic Healing Class was the most INTENSE and healing thing I have felt in a long time! This is what happens when you haven't taken a ballet class in forever with a very hands-on instructor: you remember that when done correctly, ballet is fucking hard. Class: Beginners ballet. And yes, unlike other ballet classes in LA that claim to be for beginners, the level is actually beginner. Parking: Street parking. It's West LA, so plan accordingly. Pretty much followed the standard ballet class structure (but note that it is only 1hr). The teacher gave a lot of personal corrections with detailed technical instruction. After elongating this, sinking that, pushing this way and that, turning out here, and lifting this, I was done. This was solid dance class w/ a good instructor. read more

I am a personal trainer and this is by far the best workout I have done in years. I have done all types of strength training, TRX training, boot camps and this one tops them all. This is a method that lengthens and tones your whole body using non-impact movements and the whole workout is done on the floor. I found The Barboza Method through classpass as was intrigued by her statement about form and alignment, plus how positive all the reviews were, claiming it was one of the hardest classes they'd ever been to. I sit at a desk all day and my posture has suffered to the point of injury, so I'm always looking for workout classes that will relate to my body's specific weakness and help it heal - not cause further injury. Stefani's class is amazing this way, she is constantly adjusting your position - and it isn't always delicate, but it always feels like she's showing me what my body's potential is, even if I'm not yet strong enough to hold it on my own. I recommend starting with her beginners class, it's just as challenging as the regular class but slower, to learn the technique. I'm also doing personal training sessions with her to fix my bunk shoulder with training and massage and she has been amazing. If you like pilates, barre, dance, and yoga, I cannot recommend this studio highly enough. Your body will thank you. read more

This is the BEST workout I've ever done. I don't have a dance background but have been sporadically active and thought this would be interesting to try. I explained that I am not likely to return past that month because of my schedule. But she setup an auto-pay and I was unaware she continued to charge me, racking up 1000 bucks!!! The Barboza Method is unlike any other workout I've done. Trust me, I've done nearly everything (Callanetics, Reebok slide, hula hooping, ariel yoga). The workout is non-impact and done mostly on your back, but that doesn't make it easy! Stefanie makes you feel muscles you never knew existed. There's an emphasis on form that has immediate results. You really feel taller and stronger after class! That is, once feeling returns. The studio also offers an intense, yet amazing Stretch class, as well as open-level ballet. I have been working with Stefanie privately and in her classes for over a year and feel so much relief in my body due to her strengthening and stretching exercises. Stefanie Barboza is a genius, a healer, generous and tough. I had no idea when I took a class on Class Pass how amazing her classes could be and I intend to take as many as possible. I didn't know that a class that begins on the floor could be so rigorous and after taking just two classes, with her adjustments, I am more aware of my posture. Stefanie is like a drill sergeant but she really pushes every student to her (and occasionally, his) limit and one is forced to get each muscle to "work" so all the barre/pilates/other classes one has taken that seem harder really aren't if those muscles aren't working. She is a walking example of her own method. And her hands-on technique is amazing - she sees "lines," she says, and goes right in there to push, pull, encourage each student to one's personal best. I am a 68 year old woman, born with a partial disc in my lower spine and it is essential I keep my core strong to prevent it from slipping. I have always tried to stay fit, but my back slipped October 2011, resulting in sciatica. Since July 2012, I have attended 3 Pilate classes per week, a water aerobics class, and walk 2 to 3 miles daily. BUT something was missing. I often felt stiff, tired, some lower back pain. I started working with Stefani Barboza July 2014 one on one. The Barboza Method has made an enormous difference especially in my flexibility. But more importantly, Stefani pointed out I was not doing some of the Pilate core exercises correctly which caused discomfort and set me back. My posture is one of my biggest challenges, but that too is slowly improving. AND it is fun.
