However, the USHERS/VOLUNTEERS give you an entirely different experience than what is being preached about. They will speak loudly during the sermon, try to carry on a conversation with you during the sermon, compare what the minister did/said during his 8:00 versus his 11:15 sermons, distract you, make you give up your chair for people who arrive more than an hour late for service (when you are deep into the message and are in need of it) then make you seem like you are the problem, etc. There is a disconnect. I've noticed this problem when there is a Black manager in charge of people who don't take him or their jobs seriously. They sabotage him.

Though I usually watch the 9:30 service online (since 2019!), being there in person felt like leaving family when I walked out the doors. Elevation is a place for everyone--the old, the young, and those in between. I'm still working on my concerns with large crowds, but I know I'll be back. I am hoping to one day meet the pastor and his wife. They are such wonderful people. For now, I'm grateful to keep worshiping online until I'm ready again. Elevation is truly a wonderful church home.

If you have little ones you can check them in with Nikao Kids. Your school aged kids will be learning the Word and basic principles while you attend service! Pastor Brian is a true teacher. He ensures notes are clear and concise and breaks down Bible passages to be understood fully. I'd have to say my favorite thing at Nikao by far is the atmosphere that is set weekly from the Praise and Worship team. You immediately feel God's presence and truly free to immerse yourself. If you're looking for a Church home, Nikao is a great place to start your search. This isn't a place that teaches you to come check the box that you've attended Church for the week and move along. I had to stop and check it out, though it was secured on Saturday morning and no services were underway. The marker out front is on two sides and reads, "Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. This church, which grew out of First Presbyterian Church, was discussed as early as 1901, with the first definite plans made in 1909. The leaders of First Presbyterian required that a new church be built before any members left the church. This church was intended to serve the faculty and students at nearby Winthrop College (now Winthrop University)." On the reverse, it reads, "This Gothic Revival church built in 1912, was designed by Charlotte architect C.C. Hook and held its first services in December 1912. The church was formally organized in September 1913, then dedicated that November. Reverend Alexander Martin, who served both First and this church 1912-1914, became the first full-time pastor here in 1914, serving until 1931."
