I just spotted the restaurant area at first on arrival and was pleased when we were offered the bar area through the back as another seating option as we'd already eaten dinner and didn't want to order food. We bought two craft beers - one by Williams Bros and one by Deeside Brewery, £3.95 each, from their craft beer fridge. I liked that this fridge was easily accessible for people to peruse and select a drink as often it can be hard in bars to get a good look at the selection behind the bar, and also it meant I could look at the labels to read the drink descriptions and ingredients. On the bar was a basket of crisps (Kettle Chips :)) and nuts priced at a £1 per bag. The Lite Bite food menu didn't have much on it that looked suitable for me (as a vegan); perhaps the veggie haggis would be ok if there was no butter in the neeps and tatties, and I spotted on the restaurant menu they also have sorbets by Porrellis, which are vegan-friendly. The toilets had a nice smell and good handdrier. :) There were two TVs, each with the volume off, showing different sports. It was really quiet tonight and as we left we were the only customers in there, possibly because it's not only a Monday but also a bank holiday. I don't mind quiet places though so that was quite nice. Would be nice if there was something on the menu to take my fancy to make me want to go back to eat, but service was good and they have a good selection of craft beers so happy to give 4 stars for somewhere to go back for drinks if I was on a night out on the southside.

Gluten free chicken tempura?? Get in my belly!! It was delicious as was the gf haddock and chips. My mum ordered the steak frites amd all was going well till she choked on a piece and things got a little bit scary. The staff were lovely and helpful and thankfully my mum was ok however she had barely touched her meal and was understandably put off finishing it so it was taken away. I was very disappointed then to see that we were charged full price for her meal. Granted it was not the restaurants fault she choked but still. Money was taken off after i queried it. Visit 2: After raving about the gf batter to my bf we visited the other day and I was genuinely gutted to see the tempura and fish and chips were no longer on the menu. I had a chicken burger with gf bun but it was not the same and to be honest I dont think I will be back now as the menu is very generic now with items that are naturally gf anyway. So disappointed!

I did like the kinda dinginess of the Captain's Rest and the vibe of the place especially when there was a gig on. Alas I have been converted by the bright lights of Munro's. It looks so much bigger and there's lots of light coming in through the many big windows. The day we went it was the quarter finals of Wimbledon with Andy Murray playing, I was so pleased to see they had it on the teles when we arrived. I was super addicted and was glad to get my fix. My man had to book a table as required by the Itison deal, so I was pleased to get a good size table. The staff were really nice and helpful and explained, when I asked, what we could choose from the menu on the deal. We could choose from the burger, pizzas or hot dog. I opted for the burger, which also had mozzarella and bacon and came with chips. It was very delicious and extremely filling. I would defintiely go back and try more on their menu. It is a tad hipster but visiting on a week day night it was ok but I can imagine it gets pretty mental at the weekends. Good food and somewhere a wee bit different.

Last night I tried their vegetable gumbo for the first time, whole thing tasted of sorrel which made the whole thing a tad acidic, the tomatoes could have done with a pinch of sugar, that would have helped. The garlic bread that was served with it was extremely bland, people need to hit the garlic button, too many places don't go for it with garlic bread. Recently had garlic rye bread in Berlin and it was like being hit in the tongue with garlic bulbs (that's a good thing) St Louis has a really decent beer selection, Williams bros lager and Joker IPA on tap. As well as every William's bottle you can think of. Wine list is also far from shabby. They get a real mix of clientele, oldies, young uns, inbetweeners like me, people drinking, eating, battering into cakes and pastries. Friday and Saturdays they have live music which isn't intrusive and you can still hear your dining, drinking partner. I'm sure I'll be back as I said girlfriend loves it and it's very close to my flat. But as I'm moving soon I can't see myself going out of my way, certainly not for the food. I've visited here a couple of times for meetings/Yelp events and so hadn't had the chance to properly try it as a customer. Afternoon tea is £14.95 pp which is a pretty amazing price compared to some other places in town which are over £20 pp. For this you get: chef's top plate of cakes, homemade Glengoyne whisky macerated sultana & plain scones with clotted cream & jam, chef's selection of sandwiches - smoked salmon & cucumber, roast beef & horseradish mayonnaise, egg & cress, cream cheese and pickle. And tea, obviously. We were seated in the lounge area of Champagne Central which you could easily miss if you didn't venture far enough into the bar. It's super cosy and comfortable, and has lovely couches so it's nice to sit back and relax rather than be perched at the tall chairs in the bar. Initially service was a little patchy but the waitress explained she'd only just started working there, and she was really lovely and helpful. The other waitress who was helping us (Izabella) was great and super helpful with everything we threw at her! I'd forgot to mention that I wanted a gluten free afternoon tea when we'd booked. I mentioned it when we were there, expecting they couldn't do much about it but they went to the furthest ends of the earth to accommodate me and give us updates on how far away our afternoon tea would be. It was probably a 1/2 an hour wait which wasn't too bad seeing as I should have warned them in advance! And a separate plate of peanut-free cakes were delivered for Bex. I've had a gluten free afternoon before elsewhere, and it was dire. Spongy bread and rock-hard scones. So I wasn't sure what to expect here. When the food arrived it looked really good - and I mean, properly good. I got mini rolls rather than sandwiches and these were some of the nicest, freshest rolls I've had (and that includes gluten rolls). The scone was amazing! So fresh, light and fluffy, I actually started to doubt it was gluten free, it was so nice. Served with clotted cream and pots of jam, we were in scone heaven. The cakes were also a great selection and I really enjoyed those too - but for me the highlight was the scone. They even packaged up my second scone for me to take home. All up, this was a really great afternoon tea which is a steal for the price and a really nice atmosphere to sit and relax with the girls for a couple of hours. I'd say it was moderately busy but never noisy as the seats are spread really far apart, so you can even forget you're in a busy bar.
