The Barbecue Shack in Fanning Springs contributed extensively to my once expanding waistline. Thank goodness that's under control ! The food has always been good and the fries and other fixings are great. (Too good) My duty station was walking distance from the Shack, so it was a primary dining option for many years. It's not 5 star amenities, but the food is good and plentiful. I don't go as often now, but it's still a good "quick" lunch location! Disappointed by the 1/2 lb of brisket only being 1/4 lb! Come on man ... if someone orders 1/2 lb DONT GUESS!! Weight it out .!!!! Beans were good tho just not worth the trip. Sorry, won't be back. You had 1 chance and YOU BLEW IT!! Best of luck in the new building. Invest in a scale. read more

Stopped on way through town. Great bbq, the sliced brisket was greats.. not pretty on the outside but great food

'Shack' is right! But damn, is the food good! I had the fried shrimp, plus baked beans and onion straws as sides. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. The beans had some pulled pork mixed in and were very good, as were the onion straws. My wife had the brisket sandwich with the garlic bread bun. It was super good! The soft drinks drinks are huge. The normal size is like 24oz and the large is over 32oz. If I were passing through Fanning Springs again, I'd definitely drop in. read more

Came here to eat as there weren't many good choices in the area and reviews seemed good. It was ok. A lot of food. But not the greatest BBQ. The best part was the fried okra. We did get 2 pieces of pie to take home and they were just ok too. It's a small place where locals run into one another and good ol boys come to hang out. Not bad. Average bbq. Pulled pork was a little dry and cold. The bread for the pulled pork sandwich was supposed to be garlic bread but was regular white bread with no garlic flavor. Fries tasted like cheap frozen fries and were cold. The brisket sandwich was good. The onion straw fries were OK. Bbq sauces are average. Had water for drinks and tasted weird. Service was good. Order at counter and they bring it to your table in take out containers. The place is small with counter seating and a few tables. Not the cleanest restaurant. Ceiling is falling down and patched inside with roofing tin in spots. The table we had was sticky and dirty with food crumbs. Overall if I did go back I would do take out and heat food up at home. read more

Passed by here 100x and finally stopped in! Ordered the rib dinner and pulled pork dinner and each came with 2 sides. Seriously some of the largest ribs I've ever seen! Ribs-large and very tender 5* Pulled pork- good and tender 4* Mac n cheese- super super cheesy & good 5* Coleslaw- some of the best I've had cause I'm picky and not a huge fan of coleslaw. Juicy, lightly smoked pulled pork with a perfectly blended bbq sauce, crunchy fried okra, and sweet tea just like my dad used to make. The people working there are some of the sweetest people I've ever ran into at a restaurant. I can't say enough about how delicious and well prepared the food is and how nice that the staff was. Thank you for a delicious meal. We rarely come to this part of state but we'd drive the 2 hours out of our way for this food and service next time we're in the St.Pete/Tampa area! read more

Love the place, love the food! One of those great little hole in the wall places that does not disappoint! Tender fat ribs, moist chicken. Our sides were jalepeno corn nuggets, baked beans and onion petals, all were fantastic. Everyone very friendly and welcoming. Passing thru from California to the Keys. I drive by here every time I visit my parents up in Steinhatchee and I love it. Delicious pulled pork BBQ and always smokin' hot. And the okra- mmmmmmmmmmm my favorite vegetable and they never let me down. Also great corn nuggets, they're creamy and perfectly done. The ribs are great too, nothing here is dry. My ONLY possible complaint is that you only get one free refill and the tea is so good it's hard not to suck it all down.. but the cups are big enough it's really not a big deal- and I drink a LOT so that means a lot coming from me. We found this place accidentally the first time but I'm so glad we decided to stop or we'd never have been blessed with this tasty gift from the BBQ Gods. If you're picky about BBQ, just give it a try. They're delicious. read more

One of our favorite spots to go when we crave a burger. The staff is so nice and they have good tea! Food is good (well the burgers are). The burgers and sides is all we've tried. Easy to call in and pick up. Bathrooms are clean. Eat in area is small but adequate. read more

BBQ Shack is the best!! And I'm not talking best in Fanning Springs. I'm talking best anywhere! Their brisket is the finest, best tasting brisket in the world. Their ribs and chicken are phenomenal! And their cole slaw is to die for. The fried okra is so dang tasty. And all of their pies are scrumptious! Finally, the employees are such nice people. My only complaint is that they are so far away from my home. I think I need to construct a wormhole between my house and BBQ Shack. read more

Traveling through on a long road trip and stopped here based on the reviews- pulling in we were a little unsure what to think but we were pleasantly surprised when we got our food! Server was really lovely and patient with our kiddos as they ordered. Our crew liked the casual comfortable atmosphere and the food was truly delicious. It was fun trying some southern foods we can't get up in the Midwest, too! I would highly recommend making a stop here if you're heading through this area. read more

Terrible. All the sides are not fresh. They must have came out of a frozen bag. Absolutely all the meat was dry. It had a faint taste of wood that was stolen from a construction site (I'm not kidding). If you're driving through. Do yourself a favor and stop somewhere else: It's really bad. This place a great potential! We shared a pulled pork sandwich and it was ok. The Mac& cheese was ....well it was just bad, I'm sorry but it even looked bad. My BIG thing with any restaurant is they need to have good sides! It'd be REALLY nice if they were a little different.....like make some baked homemade mac & cheese....it's more expensive to make but make it a premium side. Someone else made a comment about scratchy bathrooms....yeh there are small slats in the door but nothing huge....again, super easy and relatively inexpensive fix....throw some old wood on the walls, correlated tin on the ceiling and get new or used but better looking fixtures. read more

It is plain and simple this place is good it has hot and fresh food great BBQ sauce even though I'm not even a fan of most BBQ sauce this place has the best sauce. I would get the rib sandwich on garlic bread boneless. read more

This place is definitely a BBQ place. Very rough around the edges. We got two plates. The lady behind the counter was nice enough. The smoked chicken sandwich was on Texas toast was HUGE and pretty good. Their BBQ sauce on the tables weren't very good. Sweet potato fries were plain. My dads smoked pork was really good and he said his baked beans were good. Service was quick and pretty cheap. Bathrooms are sketchy. The women's restroom had holes in the door big enough for anyone to peek into. read more

We happened upon the BBQ Shack when we were camping across the street. The food is fabulous and you can smell the smoker going all day so we were drawn to the yummy smell. The pork was tender and juicy and the sauces just perfect. It was so good we went back the next day. The zipper peas were amazing!! I had never heard of them and the sweet waitress told me where I could get them frozen locally (we were from out of state) and even told me how she made them. Everyone was so so friendly!!! Fried green tomatoes! Corn nuggets! These are the best sides I have had at any BBQ place, in NYC, Ozona or anywhere else.

This isn't our first visit here. Their food is so good that the kids remembered it from three years ago when we were in town last. They're super friendly and act like they've known you forever when you walk in. The portions are quite generous and the kids all left with leftovers. The BBQ is served without sauce and there's three types on each table so you can tailor it to your liking. The cost was between $9-11 per person depending on what you ordered. For 5 adults and 1 child our total was $62 which I felt was well worth it. I'll definitely eat here next time we're in town. read more

We were riding bicycles in the nearby path and stopped in for lunch in March 2014. Had the BBQ sandwich & fries. Food poisoning put me in the ER the next day. My boyfriend just had a bite of my sandwich and he was sick too the next night, but not nearly as bad. No more roadside shacks for us. read more

Great place to stop half way between Clearwater and Tallahassee to get some good eats for a very reasonable price. The ribs are good also.

Best wings around, you wouldn't think of a BBQ place for wings but they are hands down the biggest juiciest wings in the area. The BBQ is also top notch and if you order a sandwich they give you enough meat to make a second sandwich. If you are ordering take out they will have it done quicker than you can get there.
