The Cypress Inn is a Dixie County Iconic Restaurant. It's at the North edge of Hwy. 19 City Limits. Today I had two pork-chops off the Buffet table and a Salad They had a large selection on the buffet, but I try to limit myself to a single protein and salad during lunch. Most of the food is fried, so I try very hard to be moderate with the fried food. The waitresses are always friendly and attentive, and their restaurant is clean as you would expect during lunch hour. This is one of three primary local restaurants and you will learn quickly where the cowboys, hunters, loggers, fishermen and other regulars sit to talk. Have been here a few times. Pretty cool ambiance and I love all the dogs! Most recently, we had the ahi and salmon. The ahi was great but the salmon was over cooked and not great. The toasted pecans on the happy hour menu tasted like they were out of a grocery store nut packet. Really nice waitress and a good caesar! Would come back. read more

Their buffet didn't appeal to me. Another person with us loved the fried mullet on the buffet (it's only on the buffet on Fridays). They also had swamp-cabbage (heart of palms) on the buffet. Two of us had the best cheeseburger and they were delicious! The building is made out of pecky cypress. Impressive, but the years of cigarette smoke has turned the interior walls very dark. There's no smoking now. The place needs major updating. Needs to be rewired to replace the many extension cords, reflective window treatments need redoing, the inside is dark, but the building itself would be outstanding if it had someone to invest money, time and love into it. Traveling south on Highway 19 I had to stop at the Cypress Inn Restaurant in Cross City, FL. For many years it was a tradition when our family traveled south for a break from the winter. One could just pass by, but that would be a mistake. Their local shrimp are fresh and tasty! The low price will also amaze! As soon as I entered, I was greeted like a regular. Service was prompt and attentive and coffee was really good. Since 1928 the Cypress Inn has been privately owned and operated and I was proud to see them open! Best hamburger called the Chubbie Burger I have had. We also had a Cypress Philly with beef and they actually use steak that was so tender and delicious. What a pleasant surprise finding this place on our way home off of SR 19. They also offer a fresh lunch buffet 11-4 on Friday night all you can eat seafood buffet from 5:00 to 9:00 and Saturday a breakfast buffet 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.. Heading back to Tampa Bay from Tallahassee, and we started looking for someplace good to stop for a late lunch. So glad we read the reviews, this place lives up to them! Staff are incredibly sweet (Happy Birthday, Timber!), and the food is AMAZING! The fried chicken was nice and juicy, mashed potatoes were home made, awesome meatloaf, moist and sweet corn bread -- I could go on. Rustic decor and just an overall homey atmosphere! This doesn't really look like a place you might want to stop from the outside,, but from the moment we walked in the door we were in love. All of the staff here were amazingly friendly, that down on the farm southern hospitality that is rare to find anymore! The rustic interior decor had us feeling cozy, comfortable, and at home! We looked at the menu but decided on the buffet...glad we did. Great fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, Chicken and dumplings, okra, greens, rice, and more.. there is also a small salad bar to go along with everything fresh and some great seafood salad to boot! If there was any flaw to be found, the cornbread could have been a bit better, but it was still delicious in a bowl with some beans(also available on the buffet). As we were getting ready to leave our server informed us that some fresh made cake was on the way out! We would not hesitate to return here anytime we find ourselves close!! read more

Cypress Inn is a down-home Southern style restaurant tucked away in the western outskirts of Cross City, Florida in the shadow of a large (and very noisy) sawmill. You smell pine oleoresin in the air mixed with the delicious scent of seafood or chicken frying in the restaurant's fryer as you walk in from the parking lot. The building itself looks like it hasn't changed since the 1960s and salutes the heyday of independent roadside motels and restaurants prior to the advent of the Interstate. A window has been painted to proclaim "Jesus is the reason for the season" despite it no longer being anywhere near Christmas and inside on the menu you'll find "freedom fries" instead of French fries--it's that kind of place and should be embraced for it, too. The interior is beyond description: impressive and liberal use of pecky cypress paneling (hence the restaurant's name), an ancient cash register, local newspapers for sale on the front desk, gumball machines, and lots of taxidermy. Deer heads watch you from all corners and woodwork is plentiful, fitting given its location next to a sawmill. It's dim, almost dark in some corners, yet homey and inviting. My friend Eli recommended the Cypress Inn thus: "don't be a wuss, get either the frog legs or the quail--you can get ribs anywhere". So I ordered quail which came with three sides (but oddly no form of bread at all). I chose greens, mashed taters with gravy, and pickled beets as my sides. The quail was tenderly battered with a frying batter that was spiced with pepper and just slightly with salt and would, frankly, be perfect also for fried chicken. Quail is a small bird and has about as much meat on it as a squirrel, and you have to fight tooth and nail to claw that meat out of the bones around it, but it's worth the effort. The mashed taters were fine, the beets very good--a strong (in a good way) vinegar pickle--and the greens were absolutely the best greens I've ever had. I am really surprised no form of bread was included though: cornbread or a roll or something, you would think. I had a chocolate pie for dessert which the waitress said they made in-house: this was not exceptional but did have the taste that it was homemade, though the crust wasn't that good the chocolate filling was alright. The staff is very nice and friendly though I can see them getting behind possibly on a busy night, like Fridays when they have their seafood buffet which I hear is a big draw. Their breakfasts are legendary locally apparently, too. Check them out. *** Update and Edit: After a second visit on a Saturday when they had their country dinner buffet, I upgraded Cypress Inn to a full five stars. Why? The buffet, while much less extensive than Ole Time Country Buffet (Lake City) or Sisters' in Branford, nonetheless was a steal for around $10, included a variety of desserts (pies and cobbler) and had some of the very best fried chicken I've ever had--plus things that ran low promptly were refilled. And the staff is just super-sweet, like really the nicest ladies. So five stars because you can't beat this for country cookin'. read more

What a wonderful meal in this different dimension. Old world 1927 restaurant which hasn't changed a lot and is proud of it! My husband said he had been waiting 30 years to find fried chicken this good! I had an amazing handmade, double cheeseburger and fries for only $7.95! Taxidermy on the walls has been mounted by generations in this town. Owner Mr Danny's passion for the place, the food and the history is incredible. The pecky Cyprus wood is amazing. In the past discarded for scrap And burned, now worth hundreds per board. It is really beautiful to look at and a great stop to get piece of history in this God loving place called Cross City. We stayed across the street at the Putman Lodge, which is said that Al Capone frequented and is Haunted. Just settling in... we'll see about that part. read more

Great local cuisine, from burgers and fried chicken to frog legs and quail. They offer quite a lot of seafood as well. The waitress was friendly and capable; I felt as if I should call her Mom! I ordered the fried catfish which came with 2 sides. Options included okra, mustard greens, potatoes, applesauce, and many more. My catfish was delicious--crispy outside and tender inside. With 3 large fillets, there was more than enough. There were 3 hush puppies on the plate as well. My husband downed a generous serving of meatloaf. He describes it as flavorful--just like home. This is not a fancy place. Our dinners arrived on china but the "buttery spread" for my baked potato was in a single-serving plastic tub. The salads were iceberg lettuce with some tomato and other veggies. Prices are very reasonable. Our dinners were around $14 each. Burgers and sandwiches are considerably less. Considering that this is almost the only restaurant for miles around, we were happily surprised that it's so good! If we pass through again, we'll definitely stop here again. read more

Recently had a chance to eat here agan after over 30 years of occasional meals while driving from Tampa to Tallahassee on US 19. This is a venerable old restaurant favored by locals, including law enforcement and rescue workers. It is a converted old house and the interior is all pecky cypress, including loft ceilings. Lots of deer heads & antlers offering designer touches. Menu is country cooking stand-bys, lots of chicken, burgers/loaf, fish 'n grits, etc. No pretension and unlikely to offer diet items or even whole wheat toast----but can get unsweetened tea. Friday offers a seafood buffet with swamp cabbage (heart of palm) when available. No beer, wine or wicked spirits. Good solid food...and worth watching for as you blow through the tiny town of Shamrock....remembering the Highway Patrol station nearby and the troopers chowing down here......so blow through at the posted speed limit. read more

While out riding this fin Saturday we once again stumbled upon the Cypress Inn and figured what the heck lets give it a try. Absolutely amazing in every aspect the food the service the decor everything was spot on. We had the buffet with fried chicken, mashed taters, onion gravy and greens that were to die for! I consider myself "country" but I admit these are the best greens I have ever had and who would have considered battering and frying a Brussels sprout? They have pulled it off in a big way. My second trip I came right after the buffet ended and right when the waitresses social lives began. It took 15 minutes to get my drink and after my food came not a sole checked on me but the gals all swapped stories watched videos on their phones and talked about finding other jobs. My brother and I stopped here on our way from Tallahassee to Sarasota. I didn't check the reviews until we sat down and thought we might be disappointed. The menu was pretty basic but they had a buffet going on so we both decided to try it. Well we sure as heck were surprised with how great this food was and what a wonderful selection of home cooked favorites.
