We were traveling through & stopped in Charleston. Walked here for dinner. Walked in on a Tuesday night & it was empty except for one person at the bar. Had a classic smash burger with onion rings. My first time trying food from the Bear's Den. I had their club sandwich with plain ruffle chips and dill pickle spear. It was very good, large and filling. No real negative about this classic sandwich except might have been tad better with some thinly sliced onion and some vinegar drizzled on it. But I would DEFINITELY eat this sandwich again and highly recommend trying this joint out. read more

I ordered for the first time from here. The reviews were good for the club sandwich and chili. I ordered both. The club sandwich was ok, but the chili tasted like chili you put on hot dogs with the same consistency. I could not eat it. The next order was a plain cheeseburger. Well, it looked good but as soon as they took a bite it was raw. That was not eaten either. We got a pasta salad and potato salad for sides. Pasta was good but potato was bland. Located in the basement of what used to be the Daniel Boone hotel, this bar and grill is the downtown hot spot for weekday lunch. They have a large selection of salads and sandwiches, the prices are a little on the steep side, but the portions are big, and delicious. I am a hamburger lover of the nth degree, and the Bear's Den currently ranks as having the number one burger in the valley, IMO. They grind their own meat, and cook it to order per your specified degree of doneness. And for a few extra bucks you I recommend a side order of their hand cut french fries. read more

Bears Dens always been good to me. It's easy access from my state office in downtown Charleston. Great wings, great Chili and if you need a go to sandwich get the Cajun Turkey wrap. Do not eat here. I am a student of the University and have eaten the Bear's Den food for over three years. The food has only gotten worse over time and the company, Sodexo, that runs it has zero intention of ever improving. This is a common problem brought up in student government, but because freshmen and sophomores are forced to have meal plans, Sodexo has no incentive to fix any issues. A few of my co-workers gathered there for lunch recently, and I was disappointed. I ordered the BLT, an order of onion rings, and coffee. The coffee was delivered quickly, but it was undrinkable; it tasted like it had been sitting on a hot burner all morning; you know that taste. The BLT was dry and remarkably tasteless. And the onion rings were breaded, not batter fried, and tasted like the Ore-Ida onion rings you'd get from the frozen foods section at Wal-Mart. read more

The bread tasted stale and cold. It came with some nasty chips which were the worst I've ever had in my life. A disgusting limp pickle that was more watery then pickley. This is a really neat little place hidden away in the bottom floor of an old hotel. I always got the steak sandwich or sometimes the steak salad with balsamic dressing if I was feeling like a fat ass. Beer is cold and the menu is of a wide variety. Also, pretty quick service for lunch. It's a little off the beaten path from your restaurants closer to the river, and so it's easy to overlook, but don't. read more

May not be much to look at upon first glance, but the beer is nicely cold - the food is excellent - and the service is pretty damn good. I will definitely be back here on future visits to Charleston. The only reason why they are getting 2 stars is because of the nice lady working behind the bar. We waited almost 1 hour for a burger and chips. Normally I would not complain, but there were people who ordered a half an hour after us and they got their food before us. When I finally received my food, it was totally burned to a crisp. I had lunch at the Bear's Den today and I was not impressed. I went with someone else and we arrived at about 11:30 (so pre lunch rush). Our waiter was very nice, I have no complaints about the service - it was pretty good. He explained to us, that everything on the menu was good (red flag number one) and that they had the best cheeseburger in town. So, I ordered the cheeseburger and their hand cut fries. About 15 minutes later my fries showed up cold and the burger was hands down one of the least flavorful burgers I have had, ever. My date's food was a little better, he had a ribeye sandwich and onion rings. The ribeye sandwich was decently flavored and the onion rings had great potential. They were battered properly and the onion had an appropriate amount of snap to it. Had they been hot (as opposed to room temperature) I would have considered giving this place one more star. Nutshell, I would not go back. While the experience was not bad, it just was not enough to motivate me to spend my money there again. read more

I made my first visit to Bear's Den today! I was here for a business lunch. I have a high tolerance for finding the occasional foreign object in my food (e.g. the occasional hair). However, what I found in my food today at Bear's Den may not have been of this world. On the second bite of my seemingly alright Reuben sandwich, I felt what I believed to be a rouge piece of sauerkraut hanging from my lip. Embarrassed, I went to remove it before anyone else noticed. What I pulled out next would rival any hairball ever expelled from a household cat. As I began to pull the would-be sauerkraut from my mouth, I noticed it was in fact a large black hair that I was pulling from my mouth. At this snapshot in time, I was not that disgusted. For, a rogue hair in a sandwich is not unheard of. This was no ordinary hair. It was as dark as a filthy rat, slimy as a cockroach's back, and, worst of all, it was attached to a nexus of hairs formed around what I surmised was a core of human skin and dregs of kitchen crud. Was this sandwich dropped on the floor? Did the chef have a violent coughing fit between the slices of rye? Is this human, feline, or something not of this world? That is a mystery for another day... I quickly hid the the revolting object, relegating it to a napkin prison. Partly to be polite, and partly to shield myself from the horror that a closer inspection might yield. How could such a large krakken of human hair go unnoticed? What other dangers lurk in other dishes made here everyday? I stomached enough of the vile sandwich as to not raise alarm among my fellow diners. This single wretched experience has led to the 1 star I have given this restaurant. Probably will not go again. read more
