After moving to Minneapolis I went to a salon to get a full foil and wound up with a 90's disaster. I'm pregnant, and my self esteem went down the tube afterwards. I waited a few weeks and decided to give a different salon a try to fix my mess. I found The Beauty Room on Yelp and took a chance with any stylist available. Thank the universe and every star above that I was paired with Holly. And honestly- thank goodness she didn't turn me away when she saw the yellow correction coming her way. Her energy was phenomenal and her humor and conversation are second to none. You know when you want to have that old friend feeling with a stylist when sitting in a chair all day? That's what she gave. She took her time, gave me my confidence back and gave me the best color I've ever received. I'm a client for life- even if I need to fly to her in the future. I am only writing this review because I don't want someone else to have the same experience I had. Mi Shaun - Color: I came to this salon to see Mi Shaun after seeing reviews posted for her that she was great with blonds. My hair needed to be fixed and I wanted someone who would be able to do that. It was damaged from over-highlighting and someone had broken my base and another colorist had tried to correct it by over-toning it. The first appointment I went for mi Shaun wanted to go easy on my hair because she was concerned about what might happen based on all the previous hair color. She put highlights in and, overall the highlights looked nice, but the base color still didn't look good. She assured me that we could correct it over time, but that she didn't want to cause more damage. At the second appointment, I stated where we had left off and she put highlights in my hair again, but only at the based 1-1.2" of my hair with no other color correction. After this process, my highlights at the base of my head were brighter that the highlights in the rest of my hair which made the overall appearance look strange. On top of this, she didn't correct the rest of the tone of the hair color which is what I ultimately came to her to correct in the first place. I called to express that I was up happy with the final result twice with no call back. On a professional note, she was drinking wine during my second appointment. I appreciate that she offered me some, but she shouldn't be drinking while she's doing hair. MinJo - Cut: I would give high ratings for MinJo's service. She was super nice and I liked the haircut she gave me. If it was just for her, I would have come back. read more

I was referred to the Beauty Room by someone who always had great hair and consistently had different, great hair. And she did not have easy hair, by her own admission. This gave me great confidence. The Beauty Room had just opened in their new, fab-u-lous space when I first went. It's open, bright, tasteful style made me feel happy just to be there. It really is beautiful. And I love the wallpaper in the bath. It's a nice, glammy touch. I started seeing Annette for cuts and she really has created and crafted a series of hairstyles that suit me and my personality. I trust her eye and her taste. She takes the season and my profession into account so I have hair that is not old or out of style. Plus, I love seeing her cute pics of her dogs. Annette recommended I see Mi Shaun for color. Mi Shaun is the owner of the Beauty Room and created the vision for the organization and the space. Like the space she is hip and fun while focused on excellence. She knows color and is a color expert and has enough experience to ask the right questions about what I wanted to ensure I my expectations were met. After my first color I thing I burst out, "Oh my god, I look 10 years younger!" Parking is street parking which can be challenging. They have a lot of product that is new to me and is very eco- and trend-forward. It can be spendy, depending on the brand. However, sometimes the Davines product is worth it. I just keep getting ousted as mayor. Ugh. read more

I had a facial with Marcus today at the Beauty Room and it was a real treat. This man is a true skin-care professional... assessed my skin in a flash and had multiple recommendations as to how our session could go. I love choices! I came out with clean, radiant skin and I swear the treatments lifted off some of the signs of wear and tear the summer has brought about. Also, he has hands of gold... great head/neck/hand/arm massage. I'm going to be scheduling a series of peels with him and I can't wait! read more

If I could give Renee (not sure about the spelling) 100 stars I would. No one, and I mean NO ONE, in my half century on this earth has cut my hair as well as she did. I had pretty much given up on having really cute hair that was easy to style. But I sketched a picture of what I wanted and she followed it precisely. She really has an incredible gift on top of obviously excellent training. I was hesitant to write such a glowing review because I don't want her to get booked up...but I'll take my chances. She deserves the praise. By the way, I stopped into Shop in the City afterward and the owner raved about my hair. I was recently in for a much needed maintenance cut and she worked her magic. I keep looking in the mirror saying to myself: "Damn, I look good." If you want a stylist that listens to what you want, is fun AND mature AND will give you honest feedback about your hair and life, then Vanessa Z is your girl. She's sassy, funky and knows how to cut hair like a champ. She's great w both men's and women's hair. Note: This is a salon that rents chairs to stylists. Vanessa only accepts cash or check. I LOVE the Beauty Room. This is the first time I've had a consistent, proper hair stylist and colorist for more than a year. I think I've been working with Matt and Jessica for three years or so; after a recommendation from a very high-maintenance friend who SO does not settle for anything less than the best when it comes to hair. The Beauty Room is clean, polished and just all-around lovely. Everyone is friendly and helpful. There's always fresh coffee and cucumber water; and my favorite guilty pleasure magazines to peruse. It's the perfect way to spend a morning or evening. Just chatting and looking divine. Love! Just remember they do NOT take credit cards, so you have to bring your checkbook. I have been keeping an eye on this place for months and finally had the opportunity to check it out today! I called on Tuesday and spoke to a very gracious gentleman on the other end of the line who was able to accommodate 2 services on the day and time I had hoped for. I felt that he made a genuine effort to make it work for me. I already had a great first impression of this place after speaking with him. Parking is on-street and aplenty. I arrived a few minutes before my scheduled time which gave me time to take it all in: such a beautiful place without being too prissy. I was greeted by a friendly gentleman (who I assume I had spoken with on the phone when I made my appointment). There was a great product assortment as well as many tempting baubles for sale! Great rings, necklaces, earrings, etc for such reasonable prices. I was then greeted by Heidi, an esthetician, who led me to a cozy room for a chin and brow wax. The room was very clean and tidy and Heidi was very pleasant and easy to talk to. I was very satisfied with her services: very meticulous. Afterwards she introduced me to Jan, a nail technician, for my shellac manicure. A basic shellac manicure is $35 which is very reasonable. Jan was also very pleasant to chat with and was also very meticulous. My nails look fantastic! This was my second shellac manicure, the first done elsewhere, and I was much more satisfied with the one I received from Jan. Both Heidi and Jan only accept cash or checks. I think this *might* be the case for all of the service providers? I was very satisfied with my experience here today and will definitely be back! And yes, I did walk out with a fabulous new ring to boot! read more

I'm SOOOOOOO happy that Katie B. and Lindsay B. were the hair stylists for myself and my bridesmaids for my wedding! They came to our hotel so that everyone could rotate through hair and makeup stations throughout the morning. It was a fun and relaxing experience equipped with an ipod dock and pandora stations a plenty. It was super convenient that they were willing to come to us and they were flexible with setting up their own little area in the hotel room. All of the bridesmaids and myself all have different hair types and all wanted different styles. Katie and Lindsay offered some different styling options at different price points that made everyone happy. They did an amazing job with everyone's hair, I couldn't believe how great everyone looked! I absolutely love love loved by wedding hair. After all the polishing, buffing, and primping that goes into the wedding planning process-- it wasn't until Katie finished my hair and pinned the veil in that it hit me that I was a bride. Weddings are so amazing. They're filled with so much love and happiness. I felt beautiful inside and out that day. I have been there to see Holly numerous times for not only my color, but also cut. I have naturally dark hair and I go bleach blonde. I have never had another stylist understand the color and toning process as well as Holly. I have worked in a handful of salons in the past and understand how hard my hair is to get to the perfect level - she nails it everytime!! As far as the salon itself - wow! it's been awhile since I;'ve yelped. back in scotland, finally found an apt after almost paying nyc prices for a prison cell univ room, did the maid of honor duties, ate some haggis, its time to get back in the game. there are many subjects that when talking about sarcasm is a necessity- eg, men, minnesota winters, my stomach issues, dating, palin, etc. there are other, though few, subjects that when talking about sarasm is never welcomed- eg, why i spent a month of my mpls summer doing the fat flush just to gain it all back craving carbs, why scottish men are generally the least attractive group ever seen, my diabetic cat, and hair color. i have had every hair color. some intentionally, many not. you see, one of the benefits of completely damaged, coarse, porous hair is that it consumes color. it absorbs color often surprising you when your hair is dry, making that bitch on the box totally moot. i stopped doing the box colors unless it was to cover my 40% gray re-growth a long time ago, after having to get my hair stripped after i dyed it a black darker than shoe polish- a color i was told did not exist on any human, globally, and another time in which a dark red became a purple that brought tears to my loved ones' eyes. though i will gladly spend 8 bucks on a cut, a color is not something to fuck around with. i have a friend who is unnaturally blonde. it cannot be real. that is not the point. it is even, it is consistent, it is a perfectly executed color. i asked her where she went. she told me she went to this place where the woman who did her color was so fucking amazing that she only did color and no cuts. it was a bit far from where i lived and i called weeks in advance. this woman, i was told, would change my life. her name is mi'shawn. she is at the beauty room. i have never been happier in my life with my hair color. i am not fucking around. im debating if she is worth the 900 buck round trip ticket from edinburgh so i can see her at xmas. i shit you not, she is unfucking real. and i do not, ever, joke about hair color. read more

I'm the last guy that you would see going into a salon to get his hair cut. I had a big job interview coming up, so I thought I should get my hair done professionally (my flo-be was on the fritz). I was pretty uncomfortable walking in, but I was immediately offered a coffee and a car and driver magazine. As I sat on the couch with my feet up, checking out the newest Cadillac coup specs, a beautiful girl walked up and said follow me. I got to lay down and she massaged my head during the 'shampoo' part of my haircut. During my haircut, the 'stylist' was really funny and easy to talk to. Her chair was right next to the owner's chair, so I got to meet her as well. Both girls made the entire experience more fun than anything else. My haircut looked effin unbelievable!!!! I don't know if I got the job based only on my hair, because I even got my eyebrows trimmed, my neck or 'nape' as they call it trimmed, and they convinced me to try a nostril wax. I did it and it was AWESOME. The guy that did my nose was named Marcus and he was really professional and cool as he ripped the hair (I didn't know I had) out of my nose. One thing I know for sure, Is that salons are not only for girls anymore. They have this one set up with guys in mind and I will be back for sure. I am so impressed. I really appreciate MinJo's style - she read my mind... walked me through everything before proceeding, respected the length I wanted to keep, and did a solid job executing. There's real peace of mind that you're in good hands here. This is a first where I didn't ask to go back in and make "this part a little shorter, this more 'V-like,' etc." - MinJo got it right the first time. She's so good that when I lived in Washington, DC I made sure that my business trips to MN included a cut and color with Meghan. Meghan listens to her clients but also isn't afraid to tell you what would look best on you and, she's always right. I can't tell you how many times people stop me and ask me who does my hair. On top of that, The Beauty Room is a gorgeous, fun and clean/professional place. My hair has two distinct eras -- the before Meghan B. era and the WOW after Meghan B. era. Overall I found everyone at The Beauty Room to be unwelcoming and snobby. No one greets you when you walk in. The woman sitting behind the desk when I arrived acted really annoyed and curtly told me that my stylist would come get me when she was ready. The woman who cut my hair was fine, but she told me right away that she had plans right after my appointment and wanted to know if it was okay if she didn't style my hair. She said it in a way where I didn't feel like I had much choice, so I just said ok. But she literally just cut it -- didn't dry it or anything -- and then took off the hair cape and said goodbye. I was also charged full-price for the appointment, even though I inquired about a discount since my hair was still dripping went. The woman behind the counter (still very grumpy about having to help me) told me since I agreed to no styling, the haircut would be full price. By this point I just wanted to leave -- these people were all so unfriendly. Getting my haircut is something I look forward to and want to be fun. This place was anything but. There are so many other good salons out there who actually like interacting with customers -- please do yourself a favor and go to one of them! read more

I am lucky enough to have her do my color and every single time, I am left with results that are consistently beautiful. The way she does her foils allow my hair to grow out more gracefully than I have ever experienced before. I trust that she really wants the absolutely best for me and for every person who graces her chair. This includes that I also trust her to make decisions about the right color for me. It is no surprise that she is regularly featured as one of the nation's top colorists in Allure Magazine. As a business owner myself, I look for professionals that take incredible pride in their work: Mi Shaun is a consummate professional. I have heard from a few friends that the other colorists and stylists are also at the top of their respective games. I've been seeing Meghan Brown (stylist/color specialist) at The Beauty Room for a few years now and love her and the salon. As for the salon itself, it's beautiful on the inside. There's something about being in a well-decorated space that makes a person feel prettier, too, I think. The fresh flowers are a great touch. I'm also into the hair product lines they offer (e.g., Bumble and Bumble, Davines). My stylist/colorist, Meghan Brown, is talented, a perfectionist, and an all-around lovely person. Now that I've been seeing her for several years, she and I have had the opportunity to work through a lot of cuts and colors--always striving to find the perfect cut and color to match up with my "look" and personality at the time. I love how versatile she is--she can do everything from giving you show-stopping rock-star hair to J. Crew model hair. And she wants her clients to be happy. In all the years I've seen her, I think there's been only one time I wasn't 100% pleased with the outcome, and she got me right back in to the salon, took another stab at it, and it turned out cuter than ever! She's also a great listener--if you say you want something that will grow out well and be low maintenance, she will make sure that is exactly what you get. If you bring pictures and say, "I like this and this, but NOT this and this," she'll make sure she does or doesn't do whatever you've requested. Although this may seem like a thing that all stylists/colorists should do, they don't! I've found that Meghan stands out in this way. This place isn't really near where I live (in EP), but Meghan makes it worth the drive. And did I mention how awesome she is? I LOVE this salon! It's worth the 40 minute drive for me to get my hair cut here, I'm very picky when it comes to my tresses! :-) The decor is chic and the environment is bustling but still relaxing. I go to Matt for haircuts... he's incredibly talented but also probably THE kindest, funniest person you will ever meet. I've had long, super short, and med length hair and she gets it right every time. She's always cheerful, does a fantastic job, and always makes it an enjoyable experience. Erin is fabulous!! I went to get my hair colored by her twice on trips back home to MN from various places. Both times I asked for a very different look - the first was red all-over color. I had dyed it from blonde to red a few months before, but it had faded, so I was looking to brighten it and also go a little deeper red. The second time I was trying to get back to blonde through blonde highlights because I had decided I liked blonde better, and it also blended better with the grays coming in - I'm only 27, what the heck! Despite both of these looks and techniques being quite different, my hair came out exactly how I wanted both times. I also have a lot of hair and it is long, but Erin is very efficient. I didn't get a cut the second time I went, but I got a trim the first time and was very pleased. Additionally I think the price is pretty reasonable considering the quality. Highly highly recommend this place and Erin specifically! read more

I have been going to the Beauty Room for a few years, where I see Meghan B. She is a dedicated and skilled stylist who listens to what you want but also gives good advice, and whose haircuts look great and last well. She is also low-key and cool, so I enjoy spending the time with her. I also have had great massages and manis here, including a natural manicure when I was preggo. The Beauty Room has a nice atmosphere that is urban and a little luxurious. They have a lovely decore with beautiful wallpaper and chandeliers, comfy couches to wait, and great magazines as well as coffee, tea, and spa water to drink. The only downsides are the scheduling/business side of the salon : reception staff are usually not very friendly, they rush and make mistakes, and they don't have online scheduling or accept credit cards. If that end could be figured out, this would be a 5 star review and I don't give those away! read more

Yesterday, while I was getting my haircut, I witnessed the most unprofessional behavior by the salon owner, Mishaun. While she was with a client of her own, I saw and heard her SCREAMING at another employee of hers because she did not like the type of "sanitizer" this employee was using on her station. She made a scene that was so horrible and unprofessional. It was beyond gross. The salon was full of clients and everyone heard her. The employee that she was screaming at remained calm during the whole process. Then I saw Mishaun take the employee in the back behind the front desk and continue to scream at her for NO reason. Never in a million years have I witnessed such disgusting, immature behavior from a salon owner. She looked and acted like a complete fool. The entire salon heard and saw it all. Mishaun had a client of her own in her chair and continued screaming at this poor employee over and over again. The client that was in Mishaun's chair looked beyond uncomfortable. I will continue to let my friends and other ppl know NOT to go to this establishment to get their hair done. I most definitely will not be returning myself. This salon doesn't even deserve one star. Meghan Brown at the Beauty Room is THE BEST - she is both a great colorist and her cuts are excellent. I started going to her when Beauty Room first opened. My first time going to her, I asked her honest opinion of my cut and my hair. She was straightforward with me and so I immediately knew I could trust her. I have trusted her ever since and I am always very pleased with the results. A few more details: I started with a short bob and now have long hair. I never once had an awkward stage while growing it out. Meghan stays on top of latest cutting and color techniques - she gives me a style that both keeps me up-to-date and yet professional which I need for my work. And, last but not least, she is just an all around great person who is great fun to talk to when you are in the chair. Can't recommend her enough. read more

I have been going to the Beauty room since it's opened - at least 5 years? As the previous poster mentioned they just moved to a new location on 43rd & Chicago - beautiful space!! I think most of the gals that work there came from JUUT which is where I followed my hair stylists from. I go to Emily for color and Minjo for my cut - I've been going to them for almost 8 years. I absolutely LOVE them both and would never go anywhere else!! I'm not trying to brag here, but have been asked by SO many people where I get my hair colored - Emily does a fantastic job. They are both lovely ladies and I enjoy seeing them every few weeks. I love going to the salon and I love the people there. I would recommend it to ANYONE!! read more

The cut and style were great --no complaints--I just have a small customer service complaint. I've been getting my hair cut here for two years, and during that time I have forgotten my earrings there twice now, and on both occasions, no one called me. When I figured out I had left them over a week later, I called, and they had them saved for me, but if I'm spending $55 on a haircut and then offer a pretty substantial tip, I feel like they could at least give me a courtesy call to tell me that my earrings were left behind. Both times I had end-of-day appointments and the stylist saw me take my earrings out and place them on the table, so I figured it would be pretty easy to identify that I left them, but maybe they just forgot on both occasions...like I did. read more
