Amazing massage! You have to remember this is for education for students so you won't get the upscale feel but after the massage got started and I closed my eyes it was like being in a luxury spa. They had the music and essential oils going. The rooms itself is small and not decorated but has the essentials the students need for the massage. I noticed they don't close the doors and just have the curtain so I was a little confused when I was told to undress if the door was going to close or not. It was a sunny day so the sun was shining pretty bright so the room wasn't very dark. They had the fan going but it felt really nice with the heated bed. The foot soak was nice in the beginning, he gave me a choice of essential oils and gave me a little foot scrub after the soak. I did the serenity package for $90 which included an hour of foot reflexology where he followed the chart. The next hour compromised of a face massage (he put gloves on for this), scalp, neck décolleté, arms, legs, abdomen, glute, and back. He really worked out my problem areas and added some stretches in. I was so relaxed and comfortable the whole time. I do have to mention his voice was very calming and soothing and he checked to make sure I was ok with anything before he did it. Came to Aveda Institute Minneapolis after going to another Aveda location for years and always understanding that services are performed by students. Mistakes happen, that's expected. What wasn't expected was the poor professionalism from instructors and management. It took two instructors to create a color formula, yet my hair turned out much darker than discussed and had noticeable missed spots. When I asked for corrections, I was met with back talk, rudeness, and resistance instead of support or accountability. A touch-up was eventually done, but I still left with a result I didn't ask for and without anyone taking responsibility. Disappointing experience, especially compared to other Aveda locations. I will not be returning to this location , largely because of the behavior of the people who are supposed to be the educators. read more

My niece invited me to get a facial done by her while she's learning. I've driven past this building many times and has thought about trying some of the services, which are all by students and graduates there. They offer numerous salon services, from hair, facials, and massages. I was invited to a facial. 2 parking lots next to the building for customers. Once you walk inside, there's a waiting area in the middle, on the left is retail section and check in desk. Up ahead is the salon and the otherside of the grass wall are the students working on hair. My niece came to get me in the waiting area and we went upstairs. Loved the service, she did a great job. I am so happy they finally added online scheduling! For some reason I never wanted to call in and schedule for a service and most recently I requested a facial and haircut online and I promptly got an email with the times and date they set me up with, easy peasy. My facial ran long but no complaints here. The check in process was odd since they sent me upstairs to a waiting area then checked me in late because no one took my paperwork, I'll clarify this piece next time - no one's fault I'm sure. My facial itself was great, the student def didn't have much client experience yet but her skills were wonderful and she upsold me on a peel which felt great. I've had many facials before and will definitely be back. You're in a big room with curtained off areas for privacy but I never felt uncomfortable. My haircut experience was also great. The staff at the Minneapolis Aveda institute were so fun and super sweet! I had set up an appointment online requesting a time for the upcoming weekend. When I got the appointment confirmation email, I didn't even think twice to look at the date that I was confirmed for since the time was all I focused on - fast forward, I show up and they can't find my booking. I double check the email and it was for the following weekend #facepalm. They graciously squeezed me in for a haircut anyway AND still got me in for an eyebrow wax! I wanted a tricky haircut and the first they had seen in the salon; I wanted to do the viral half up half down haircut. Basically when you put your hair in a clip half up, it looks like you have short hair and when you have all your hair down it appears like you have all long hair. My stylist was nervous but super excited and really took care of me! The instructor was also great about helping to explain the technique and we all just figured it out as we went along. ***prices based on 2025 pricing I think this is a great spot to get a facial or massage on a budget. And depending on what service you want for hair, it depends. I have curly hair (2C to 3A curl type, thin-ish hair) and have had good cuts and mediocre cuts (but never a bad cut). Definitely talk to your student stylist and make sure everything is clearly communicated, and listen to them talk it through with their instructor. Just remember, these are students. My haircuts usually cost $25, which is great savings considering most charge $70+ in other salons. For facials and massage, I highly recommend. The Tulasara facial starts at $35 for 30 minute with add-ons available for a cost. Massage "back treatment" runs at $40 for an hour service. I'd check their unnecessarily confusing website for additional info on services (it's more organized for people looking to enroll in the school than customers). Accessibility: for those who are hearing impaired looking to get a haircut, their salon is HUGE and LOUD and full of students working on clients. I've had a hard time with communication in the past, so be prepared. For the facials and massage, you get brought up to the third floor which is much, much quieter and relaxing. For those with mobility issues, I would call and see what services they have. There is an elevator to the upper levels. I'm sorry, I wish I had more info. My first visit in summer 2023 was overall amazing. It might actually have been my favorite full foil I've ever had done! My second visit this December didn't go as well... I ended up with a chunky and discolored money piece that looked pretty bad. I contacted Aveda to see if I could come back in and they were more than accommodating- I was able to be seen a day later to correct the issue. My stylist, Bailey, was fantastic and did an excellent job at giving me options and talking me through each step alongside her instructors to make sure I liked the result. The teacher would let the student bleach my roots because she claimed my hair would "melt off" due to having dye already in there. As someone who has bleached my hair and had color in it many times, I've never had my hair "melt off". I don't do my own root touch ups because I don't want it to halo. But I've done all over bleach and tone many times, including with my current color in. She also mentioned the varrying of my root length, as if I did something wrong when ya know, that's how hair grows. I feel sorry for these students. How are they going to learn anything when their teachers are too scared to use bleach? She said I should go to a professional. So a professional won't "melt" my hair off? Suddenly bleach won't do that because they have magically different bleach. Make it make sense. I think it's funny because I saw a review a little bit lower than mine. That was saying that The teacher who had short brown hair and was short herself, was very abrasive. I am pretty sure I had the same teacher because she matches that description and was extremely rude and like I said in an abrasive manner. read more

I went in for a full highlight, the woman then denied service because she felt my hair was to compromised and the texture may be too difficult to work with, ( I have 3a hair) Lightly curly. which was totally fine, this man their teacher i'm assuming then comes up and continues to degrade me and make rude comments like, that wouldn't look good on your skin tone, I only see that kind of hair on sumo wrestlers, mind you it's literally brown and blonde highlights. he proceeded to touch through my hair like he was disgusted. The girl then offered me a wash and I agreed, I left with my hair soaking wet and unstyled and paid $30. for something I could've done at home and left feeling embarrassed, degraded and ashamed. My hair color is turning out WAY better than the last balayage job from a master level at Juut. These students were very kind and listened to my concerns. They answered questions, and everything was run by the instructor. Update: they really did an amazing job, see photos! They understood the assignment, communicated well, and I am so thrilled! Know before you book that your service will look and be different than a salon, because this is a SCHOOL. Parking can be a challenge, but there are 2 lots and I can usually nab a spot in the far lot. When my hair stylist suddenly left her salon over 10 years ago, I purchased a half-off deal for Aveda Institute... and have been going here ever since! While I do not have the same stylist each time and "risk" them not being the best colorist/etc, I can honestly say I've NEVER had a bad experience in over a decade of getting my hair cut/colored at the school! The one time I wasn't thrilled with the color, I was able to come back and have it toned to a better shade - but even then it wasn't bad, just not exactly what I wanted! The students have all taken enough classes so that they are prepared to work on clients. They review their plans with an instructor before they begin and are able to check in with them anytime if they need help/have questions. The instructor also does a final check to ensure the color looks right and the cut is great. Since starting to go to the institute, I've become obsessed with Aveda color and products and now won't use anything else!! Pros: -VERY affordable!!! You're paying less since it's a student technically -Excited stylist. I had wanted to try red in my hair and was always talked out of it by prior stylists. My favorite thing to do is to sit in the students chair and tell them to do what they want. They're willing and excited to try new things which is so fun!! -Even if you get home and do not love it, they are extremely willing to fix it or change it so it is closer to what you want. -You can book many different services other than just hair. I've tried facials, massage, etc and loved getting pampered at a low price -You can stay in touch with a student if you fall in love with their work and become a client of theirs once they are hired at a salon. This is a nice way to "shop" for someone you connect with if you're looking for someone new! Cons: -Hair cut and color takes longer than experienced stylists. This isn't a problem for me as I am fine with spending a few hours and trade off by paying so much less. I've gotten incredible bayalage/ombré/artistry for under $100 however have spent quite a bit of time in the chair. I bring a book and fully charged phone and don't mind! -If you get a facial/massage, you can definitely hear other students or instructors moving around. Again, this is not an issue for me since I can get 3 massages for the same price as a "quiet" one at the salon. It's worth the trade off for me! -Location - this may not be a con for others but I don't love driving into Minneapolis. But, I make the sacrifice to get high end service for cheap. read more

I think this is a great place I been going for haircut, highlights, facial. I was there recently and the girl did a good job with highlights except she didn't cover up some gray hairs in front I asked her to. I think if she spent less time chatting with others and chewing gum she could have focused more. I felt she had to ask her instructor Todd a lot of questions. I don't like to spend a lot of money on my hair but as I'm getting older I realized I should probably start taking better care of it. But I still have a hard time justifying spending more than $50 on a haircut. So I was so thrilled when I heard that I can book appointments at Aveda! I've never gotten my haircut at a beauty school before so I knew it was kind of high risk (but also high reward). I booked my appointment online and was able to choose time preferences, I was then confirmed my appointment time via email and phone. First of all - there's a free parking lot right next to the school...score! Then checking in, the girl was really welcoming. The salon front itself is really aesthetically pleasing! I was welcomed back into the salon area by Madeline, who was the one who did my hair. She was super friendly and took my coat before I sat down. I explained to her my main goal was to fix a bad haircut and trim off dead ends. She communicated really well what she interpreted what I wanted to be and how she thought it would be best to accomplish it. During the haircut she had to call her instructors for approval about 3 times, so this is something to just be aware and patient with when going for a service here. But overall I only spent about 45 minutes there! After about an inch off, some layers, and a fabulous curling job I was out the door with hair that looked a lot more expensive than $21+tip. I got several compliments both at the salon and after leaving! I'm excited to continuing getting my hair done here. While it was a risk, it was definitely worth the price! read more

It took 7 hours to do balayage and hair cut. My hair is naturally brown and I wanted a blonde balayage. After leaving the bleach in my hair for a couple of hours (since it took so long to do the foiling), it then took another hour for her to tone it. After it was all said and done, my hair almost entirely brown in the end. The haircut isn't consistent with what I asked for (bangs to be at my jaw), but I'm okay with how they turned out in comparison to the hair bleaching. She ended with attempting to give me a blowout which consisted of tugging on my hair and leaving it more bushy and frizzy than when I walked in. read more

All they did was give me half percent off and nobody fixed it now what I have to wait for my hair to grow back.
